Spode Porto 45-Piece Flatware Set

Spode Porto 45-Piece Flatware SetI was not blown away with the design, however, man guest for dinner one night recognized that the flatware matched the tableware (Spode Blue Italian). It must have made a bigger impression than I originally thought. I will use only when using the same dish pattern.

The pattern is so elegant, and kind of tropical. Reminds me of say, British Colonial in Africa or something. Very nice weight in hand. The knives and forks are long, but then these are the kind of utensils you eat of the tip of.

The set was complete, well packaged. One large fork was bent but easily straightened the tong; I did write Spode asking for a replacement but got no reply. Still they are packaged well.

They are shiny but not blinding and the back is kind of etched as well. A very elegant, slightly tropical look for a GREAT price!

So far, washed up easily with no spotting.

MinoSharp 220/GB Ceramic Wheel Water Sharpener, Grey/Black

MinoSharp 220/GB Ceramic Wheel Water Sharpener, Grey/BlackThis is a great aid to sharpen Global knives. I disagree with the review that said it dulled the knives. The tool has ceramic wheels set at the proper angles to get the correct Japanese set to these knives, which have different angles to each side of the blade. After 8-9 passes with no pressure on the knife through the rougher and then the finer wheels, the knife is ALMOST back to factory condition. Then, it is necessary to use a fine DIAMOND hone to get that last degree of razor sharpness. And make no mistake, a properly sharpened Global knife is that sharp, and this tool makes it easy to keep them razor sharp. Instead of a diamond hone, you can also use a very fine waterstone to hone them, but trust me, the diamond hone is easiest, although it does not leave the edge quite as polished as the finest waterstones. This tool and a diamond hone let me return my Global knives to scary sharp in less than 5 minutes each. They are so sharp that whenever I sharpen them, I warn my wife that they are super sharp (as opposed to very sharp!), just to make sure that she is extra-careful when she uses them.

Now, having said that, the package states that it is recommended for Global knives, and no one should use this tool on anything other than Global knives, or similar Japanese-style knives. It is not meant for European-style knives, whose blades have a different set.

I'm not sure how people are banging up their knives using this simple, effective sharpener. Slow down, folks. Take your time.

I own a number of Global knives, and sharpen them all using the MinoSharp with tremendous success. I've even had luck sharpening Henckel and Wusthof knives with this. I enjoy using it, and when I'm done, my knives are like new.

Buy MinoSharp 220/GB Ceramic Wheel Water Sharpener, Grey/Black Now

Before you buy the Shinkansen Sharpener for your Global knives you must understand that it doesn't return the blades to their factory sharpness.

When I first bought my Globals I was warry of using my old ceramic stone on their extremely acute edge, so I bought the Shinkansen Sharpener to go with them. When they arrived, the knives' sharpness lived up to everything that's said about them, but after I ran the chef's knife through both slots several times... the knife got DULLER! Repeated use did not do any more harm to the blade, but it never improved either.

It seems that, because of it's simplicity, the Shinkansen Sharpener is best for returning very dull blades back to a servicable edge, but it will never get them really sharp.

I picked this up as a quick and easy knife sharpener for work. It managed to scratch up the side of the blade of one of my Global knives with the plastic guide.

the slots/guide to run your knife blade through are narrow, some larger knives may not fit into it if the blade is thick.

after about 1 year one of the stones broke, however you can buy replacements.

For the home user, this will suffice. If you use your knife all day long like I do, I recommend the good old tri stone instead. Ok to have as an emergency knife sharpener in your knife bag.

I was never was able to get a good enough edge with this product to do fine chiffonade and other cuts that require good knife skills.

Want MinoSharp 220/GB Ceramic Wheel Water Sharpener, Grey/Black Discount?

I bought this to sharpen several Global knives after comparing it to the confusing and expensive arrays of sharpening stones out there. The sharpener is easy to use and made of high quality materials. To operate Simply fill the small tray with water and run the knife thru the offset grooves over a course and fine ceramic wheel. After a minute i was done with several knives. Comparing the globals afterward I had mixed feelings because the knives were already pretty sharp to begin with. The revelation though was how well it worked on my Wusthof Grand Prix Knives. In fact they restored them to better than new as i was always dissatisfied with them because they were never very sharp which led me to Globals to begin with. Now the Wusthof's are of comparable sharpness. This is a great item and well worth the price.

Kitchen Utility Cart

Kitchen Utility CartThe quality of this product was not what I expected. Mine did not have the cutting board, but instead two drawers. Also, and this is more my mistake for not paying closer attention to the measurements, but once assembled the cart stands about two and half feet, which is an awkward height to be at (and I am a short person). I will say that it is cute though, just not the most functional product.

Ginkgo President 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4

Ginkgo President 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4The search for some decent flatware was daunting, to say the least. I would look at an item, the reviews, and end up going to another. After several searches, over a span of time, I stumbled upon this set. The reviews were good, and the price was also better than I had hoped.

Upon receiving this set, I was pleasantly surprised to note that the serrated knives were SHARP! I managed to nick, myself, with one of them. They look, expensive, but they really are a bargain! I would imagine they will hold up, given they are 18/0, as stamped on each handle. It is a pleasure, using this set.

I really like this set. Unique styling and a substantial feel. They improve any meal by making the presentation more bold.

Very classy and nice quality flatware set! I've already received multiple complements from people, telling me how nice and modern they look. Very sleek and modern, which is what's great about them. Even though the way the knife handle is designed, it takes up more room in my cabinet, but using them to cut is very comfortable on the hand, which is a acceptable trade-off.

OXO SteeL Large Skewer Fork

OXO SteeL Large Skewer ForkThis may well be the perfect fork. I like the OXO series of cutlery, and this is no exception. This fork is very well balanced and has a wonderful handle that is secure and resists slippage.

The fork itself is made of stainless steel, and is dishwasher safe; a huge benefit not found on some high end cutlery today. The handle is in line with the other contemporary OXO utensils, with a stainless handle for superior durability and strength, but with rubberized fins on the sides to provide you with excellent grip, which is especially important on a fork of this size that can be counted upon to lift things like heavy roasts, etc. Another excellent feature is the barbed tines, which help prevent heavy items from falling from the fork during lifting.

There may be a greater fork somewhere, but I haven't found it yet. For all your forking needs, this gets a big thumbs up!

I almost bought a Good Grips meat fork with a rubber handle until I saw this one. I love Good Grips kitchen tools, and have come to depend on the brand when I'm looking for a nice, solid, reasonably priced kitchen tool. However, in the past, my one complaint has been that when I store utensils in a crock next to the stove, those non-slip handles that I love stick together, and it becomes impossible to grab just one tool you wind up pulling out 6. This handle fixes that problem. It still has the nice, comfortable handle with rubber on either side for grip, but the stainless steel is much easier to grab quickly out of the crock. I'll definately be looking for more tools with this handle. The fork itself is nice and sturdy, a good size, and handles well. I would reccommend this product.

I got this fork to replace a cheap but much loved fork I'd had for years but somehow lost. This fork is a good size and has a nice handle but compared to the one it replaces it feels bulky and fragile. I could shove the old one up the business end of a 5-6lb chicken or 10lb or so turkey and lift it out of the roasting pan with minimal other support. It felt solid and never felt like it was bending. Doing the same thing with the Oxo fork feels bendy, unsupported and at times I've been worried that it will actually break. I'm no engineer but it may be down to the fork not being one piece, the stem being flat and wide rather than a thinner cylindrical shape and the way the prongs are angled both in terms of them curving up and the slight "kink" where they meet the stem. In your hands the fork can be bent so it isn't rigid like some. If you are looking for some flexibility then this has it, if you aren't than keep clear. The handle is nice, it really does a good job of helping you grip the fork itself at any angle you want. It's just a shame that the fork itself doesn't feel sturdy.

Overall it does a decent job if you just want to hold a piece of meat steady for carving or move pieces of meat from place to place. If you want to do any sort of moderate lifting with it then you might want to keep looking.

Oxo Steel Fork

I was looking for a quality fork for lifting heavier meat cuts without having the meat item falling off the fork and I've found the best solution for my needs. With curved prongs and tips notched like fishing hooks, this 13-1/2-inch fork gets a solid grip on roasts, poultry, and big vegetables like baked potatoes. It easily lifts a corned beef, for instance, from pot to carving surface and holds it down firmly for careful slicing. Rather than being straight-sided, this tool's handle is tapered from heel to finger grip and has satin-finish, stainless-steel panels top and bottom. The handle's sides feature the same design as those in the Good Grips line, which are made of soft processed rubber for comfort, with "fins," or grooves, that flex under pressure, conforming to individual finger grips and providing control when the handles are wet or slippery.

Some of the product features are:

* Use to skewer and lift roasts, poultry, and vegetables

* Use also with knife as carving tool

* Tapered handle with soft, nonslip sides

* Safe to use in dishwasher

* Comes with a lifetime warranty against defects

* The steel construction will not bend easily when in use.

The tapered handle with the soft non-slip sides is great feature if you have a smaller hands, as you can control the fork much easier. The barbed tips prevent slipping of the meat or vegetables. Use the OXO Steel Fork to retrieve and secure hot foods, or for hands-free serving. Both elegant and comfortable, the OXO Steel line of kitchen and household tools feature brushed stainless steel handles for strength and durability and trademark flexible fins for ultimate comfort. I use the OXO Steel Fork for piercing potatoes, transferring a pot roast from pan to platter, and securing meat during slicing, great for transferring a turkey on Thanksgiving Day or that Christmas ham for carving. Also, those sweet potatoes can be handled far easier with this fork than any other that I've used in the past due to the barbed fish hook tips. Once you have your sweet potato where you want it then with a simple pressure from a pot holder or your knife, your potato is removed from the fork

It seems that the uses for this fork are as many as your imagination can come up with and it doesn't fail. It is very well-constructed not too heavy, but very versitile and handy in your hand. I enjoy the dishwasher safe as there are times that I generate many different pots and pans and items that I can get a head start on by popping them into the dishwasher.

I loved this fork so much I bought a second one just to help out with the holiday cooking and not only I, but whomever is cooking with me, can enjoy the same convenience, stability, and gripping power. Also, I use both forks for the bigger, bulkier meat cuts with confidence. The fork is long enough that when you fry chicken in the skillet you don't get the oil splatter on your hands and forearm.

This is an item that you'll want in your kitchen for the reason I've described. The fork is a bit more expensive, but the quality of this fork makes up the difference. I use it to get items off of the BBQ grill surface without fail. This is a very useful item.

Miyabi Fusion 600D 3.5-inch Paring Knife

Miyabi Fusion 600D 3.5-inch Paring KnifeI was worried about this knife, but it seems to be doing fine. Just to let you know why I was worried about it, I wanted Japanese style knives. I was doing some research and came across a great deal on some Miyabi Fusions. I wanted to buy all 4 Knives that I was looking at, but the Paring knife had a crack in the handle. This was on clearance at Sur la Table. So I was informed that another Sur la Table had one was well. When I went to grab it, it had the same crack. This made me worry about the quality of these Knives. So far they have held up, but one of them seems to already be losing it's edge after a week of use, but I guess that's what I get for buying clearance floor models. My Parer was bought from Amazon and is super sharp.

Calphalon Katana Stainless-Steel 7-Inch Nakiri Knife

Calphalon Katana Stainless-Steel 7-Inch Nakiri KnifeI spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The meals I prepare are complicated and often include a good amount of sliced vegetables. I have two Santoku knives and have found myself using this knife more and more for my preparation work.

PROS:

Great feel, perfect balance

Sharp easily maintained edge

Heavy enough for the big stuff (squash and pumpkins)

Balanced enough for the small stuff (garlic and ginger mincing)

Works great whether you hold the handle (like I do) or the blade (like they show you in some cooking schools). If you are a blade holder, then you'll love the feel of this thick backed `clever' like knife!

PROS/CONS:

You have to hand wash and dry this knife immediately after use, but you should be used to this with any high end knife (wouldn't want to ruin your edge in the dishwasher...)

It's a bit expensive, but then, it's very well made

Thicker then a Santoku, not good for cutting meat, but it is not advertised or made for that purpose

If you don't own a Santoku knife, then do yourself a favor and get a Santoku first. You'll find the diversity and utility of a Santoku unmatched regarding preparation cutlery! If, however, you're like me, and have a variety of knives, then this knife is a GREAT addition to your collection.

A pure vegetable knife: simple, beautifully crafted, balanced like a weapon... the best in its class. You will not be disappointed!

I love every knife in this series, and this one is no different. The mostly straight blade is perfect for chopping/slicing straight through vegetables. The Nakiri has become my most used knife in the kitchen, since most of what I cut are vegetables. (Sure, the Chef and Santoku do a great job, too)

The edge is extremely sharp (though it may not be the sharpest knife on the market...my MAC Sushi knife is sharper), and combined with it's satisfying heft, makes slicing through onions, potato(e)s, carrots, etc. extremely easy.

I've read the reviews of knives in this series that complain about the ease with which these knives rust. I own nearly the entire collection (minus the new knives) and have not encountered this problem. Many people stress that the knives must be washed and dried immediately after use. This is not true or at least it's not true given my experiences.

Having been forewarned not to leave the knives in a pot of water overnight or not to use in the dishwasher I simply make a point to rinse (with soap if used on meat) and dry, then replace in the knife block, all while the food I just prepared is cooking and doesn't need me. I've left my knives for up to about 40 minutes before remembering to clean them with no ill effects. I am a known procrastinator and I have no trouble keeping my knives clean, dry and rust-free.

I am a 18 year old prep cook at a 5 star restaurant. I have been working my way up in the kitchen since I was a young dish washer, and my Grandmother bought me this Knife for Christmas this year. This knife is excellent in the prep station. I prepare soups, stir fry, slaw, salsa, vegetable, fruit, etc. and this knife can do it all. I even cut calamari with it because of it sharpness. This is key because its grind is almost flat like a katana (hence the Katana Series) and that allows it to be stay extremely sharp. About the rusting... I have seen no sings of rust yet, but I also wash and dry my knife after each use (which every chef/cook should do to be sanitary). Overall I give this knife a 5 star rating. I fell in love with it the minute I took it out of the package.

P.S. Calling people a douche just makes you look like one. That is embarrassing.

OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer

OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer, Greeni love my avocado tool but it has made eating avocados a little too easy, and my avo consumption has increased by at least 200% (but avocados contain good fats, right? which means it's ok to eat them whole?). yes you can just use a knife, but this tool makes eating avocados fun, without the risk of stabbing yourself to get the pit out. excellent for cutting up avocado for salads, sandwiches, guacamole, or as previously mentioned, eating them whole. another bonus is that the tool works equally well on semi-ripe avocados for when you have a guac emergency. the tool is easy to clean, and the only downside that i've found is that when i find myself slicer-less, i immediately regret leaving it at home

I rated this item 4 stars because I can't get the steel grips to penetrate the pit and remove it. The knife and slicer works great. I will say though, that if you have a slightly over ripe avocado, the fruit will get caught in the slicer. For a perfectly ripe avocado it works great, Maybe it's just me, but because the design is so cute its fun to use. Is this item necessary? No. Is it useful and does it function well? yes.

Buy OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer Now

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer, Green works very well as advertised. The blade easily halves the avocado, making it equal to any sharp knife in the drawer. The pit remover is actually easier to use than a sharp knife I've always slapped the knife blade into the seed & twisted, but then I have to pull the seed off the blade. I've never felt quite comfortable slamming a knife blade into the seed, or slicing the meat toward my hand -it goes against everything I was taught about cutting toward my skin with a sharp knife. The Good Grips tool provides a much safer way to prepare avocados. I've owned several avocado slicers which had wire cutters, and the wires always sprung rending the tool useless. The slicing strips of the Good Grips slicer are sturdy plastic, cutting and scooping easily and cleanly through both large and small avocados. On very ripe, soft avocado meat I've had to help the last little bit through the tool by pushing on the end of the avocado peel, but this is a minor thing. The tool fits comfortably in large or small hands; it certainly speeds up the preparation of avocados and is a clean way to prepare them; and it washes up easily. I'm glad I have it, and I recommend it.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program ... in order to test this kitchen gadget out. The avocados I got were decently ripe and pretty tasty (not the hard underripe ones blah.) The plastic blade did a suprisingly good job of cutting the avocados open easily and cleanly. The pit remover worked pretty well. I can't say the same for the slicer. If you like your Avacados ripe and kinda soft, the slicer is going to do an abysmal job of making slices; halfway through the cut, the slices get jumbled up and turn into a lump. So, this is fine for making guacamole... not so good for presentation on a plate. So I guess two out of three functions is not bad. HOWEVER, you can easily acomplish what this gadget does with a good knife and save yourself some drawer space from another single function kitchen tool.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I had picked this up on a whim because I love avocados. I love my avocados with lemon juice, salt, pepper, and some salsa on top. Anyway, this I didn't have high expectations for, honestly. But the cutting part works like a charm. Just as good as a knife. Better. The putter actually works. I usually ended up smashing my avocado a little when trying to remove the pit myself. And the slicer part actually digs all the meat out without wasting any. It's so easy. I read some reviews complaining but I learned that I start on one end. Get it a third of the way up, to make sure it's detached. Then I go to the other side and get the whole thing up and like magic it's perfectly sliced avocado. Works great on sandwiches, Salad,, Man I just am thrilled and live this.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Profection 8-Inch Carving Knife

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Profection 8-Inch Carving KnifeBest knives I've ever used, and I was a professional cook/saucier for almost fifteen years. I've used almost every make Forschner, Dick, Shun, and three different Henckels series, and the Profection knives are the best designed and very well made. Weight, balance, finish, are all exactly right for my hand; the new bolster shape makes sharpening the full length easy, and the thick back provides better stability over long use. The blade shape on the slicer expedites cutting, making dividing a large cut of meat easy, and slicing a roast is child's play. I just wish they had a few more types in the series!

Weston Cabbage Shredder

Weston Cabbage ShredderEach fall for the past 10 years I make about 75 to 90 pounds of of saurakraut. I worry that my simple old two-knife shredder will wear out so I purchased this item as a backup. Firstly, the "current" model Weston Shredder does not have the plastic or laminate base shown. It has a thin, non-laminated, non-plastic wood base that will warp with usage. The blades are unevenly spaced and non-adjustable. The blades are held in place with hand-hewed chips of wood wedged and glued into place. I think there is more chance of this slicer self destructing that there is of my old model wearing out.

I regularly make sauerkraut in a 10 liter (2.5 gallon) Harsch fermenting crock, and I thought this tool would really speed the process of shredding the cabbage. I was using either a knife or a mandoline. When I bought this cabbage shredder in spring of 2009, it was selling for over forty dollars, but I figured that was worth it, since it would make the job significantly faster and easier. I pictured myself shredding head after head of cabbage in half the time it was currently taking me.

It arrived, I tried it, and was immediately disappointed. The white laminate was already chipping at the edges, and frankly, it was awkward to use. Even more annoyingly, despite the warnings to be careful about the sharp blades, they aren't very sharp at all, at least on my particular shredder. I really had to push hard to get the cabbage to shred.

I thought maybe there was a learning curve, so I tried it for two more batches, and then stopped using it. It turned out that for the three or four heads of cabbage I use for each batch of kraut, it's still faster and easier for me to use my cheap mandoline. On top of that, the shreds of cabbage come out much better using a knife or my mandoline: this produces rather thick, uneven shreds.

I attempted to log on and write a review of this product, and wasn't able to because at the time this vendor had stopped selling this shredder. (I think that was the reason.) I tried selling mine for half price on Craigslist, but no one was interested.

I suppose that maybe, if I had to shred a dozen or so heads of cabbage, this might be a useful tool. I really wanted to like it, but it just doesn't work that well for me. Now that it's selling for less than thirty dollars, I'm even more disappointed that I spent as much as I did. I don't recommend this product for someone such as myself who makes smaller batches of kraut

While the item will work, I suggest spending the extra money and getting a higher quality unit, an electric knife does a better job than this item.

As others have said, the cutter you receive isn't the same as described. Knives are poor quality, the wood is thin, the 2 make for a hard to use tool.

I used it for the first time this month. It functioned quite well, turning 28 heads of cabbage into sauerkraut in a short time.

The sharp cutting blades present an obvious finger-slicing hazard, which the instructions address by cautioning the user to wear "Kevlar gloves." Where would you find such a thing? Would it actually help? I dealt with the problem by starting a new chunk of product atop the old whenever there got to be less than an inch or so between blades and fingers.

If you disassemble for cleaning, as recommended, be careful not to lose the tiny screws. And on reassembly, don't get any of the blades in backwards. It's easy to do.

20" Curved Full Tang Machete & Sheath Tactical Military

20' Curved Full Tang Machete & Sheath Tactical MilitaryDon't expect to use this item for anything but to scare off intruders or small children. It looks intimidating, but it's so thin, it's barely the thickness of a couple of single edge razor blades. One of the reason I bought it was that the shipping weight was listed at over 7 pounds. That would imply the device is 'substantial'. When I openeded the package, I found that it barely weighed over a pound or two. I simply couldn't hold up to any true machete work. It's only for 'looks'. If you thought you could use it for protetion, you're better-off with a "Louisville Slugger". And don't even get me started on the sheath. First of all, if you hold the machete even a little beyond horizontal, the sheath falls right to the floor. And if you try to modify the sheath some way to enable it to 'hold-on' a little better, the sheath material practically falls apart in your hands. Use this item strictly for a costume prop on Halloween. (Note: I can say ONE good thing about it however...since it's so thin, it does 'take' a edge well with a sharpening stone. But I can't says how long the edge will stay sharp.)

Awesome knife! This is my 2nd and I'm just as pleased as the 1st. Hard to find and I'm sad that they seem to be phasing this knife out of production. Buy it if you can find one!

I love this little knife... literally. I have blocks full of the best knifes in the world and I go to this one more than any of them. I bought it at a different retailer years ago. It needs sharpened a little more often than the "Better" knifes, but it is the perfect size and shape for my family prep needs.

2PC CERAMIC COATED SANTOKU

2PC CERAMIC COATED SANTOKUThese are good knives and they work well for a coated set. Got a little loose after a few uses but still work well.

These knives looked cheap right out of the box and they were amazingly dull.

Please don't waste your money on this crap.
