LamsonSharp 6-Inch Forged Utility Knife

LamsonSharp 6-Inch Forged Utility KnifeMy husband asked for this as a gift. I chose the cherry colored wood for him. It's so pretty, I feel bad about getting it dirty! But I quickly took it over and added it to my collection. :) Very nice weight to it. It is much easier cutting things than it was with my Chicago Cutlery set.

Be sure when dealing with this line to use the keywords :silver" to get the nicest quality. Unfortunately, "oiled rosewood" was a descriptor here and is not a nice feeling or looking handle, very rough to the touch compared to my other LamsonSharp "rosewood" knife. These are too pricey to not be happy with them it is going back.

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 14-Piece Block Set

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 14-Piece Block SetI am in the food industry and have some great "old" Chicago knives. Some of my knives are over 50 years old and still going strong. They have great blades that sharpen easily and wear well.

I bought a vacation home recently and one of the first thing I bought for the kitchen was this set of Chicago Cutlery. I was angry when I saw what Chicago Cutlery has done to the quality of their product. Poor grade thin steel blades that feel like toy knives with handles of cheap poor quality wood.

Stay away from these knives...do not reward them for destroying a great American Tradition.

They should be forced to give up the Name......

I got this set for my mom for Christmas. She is a "cook", no t a chef, so the knives are fine for her purposes. Better than what she had. The biggest disappointment was the wood handles, I don't know if they were not treated or what, but right out of the box they were dry and rough. They felt like they would give you splinters. My mom put some oil on them and it helped, but had I seen the handles as they were before purchase, I probably would not have purchased them. Or at least made the handles more presentable myself. But I paid $25 for them and can't really complain too much.

This set was a gift, a nice gift and terrific starter set for beginners in the kitchen or for persons who do an ocassional prep. Easy to use, nice craftsmanship, and very reasonable price for a quality name. A bread knife would have been terrific addition to the block set but all in all, feel free to get this set for that young couple or child who is moving into their own place for the first time. I am happy with it, besides it was a gift.

When I read reviews about being knives of low quality I was worried. However they seem to meet my expectations so far.

I'm not a cook, but for a regular kitchen this knife set are more than enough.

Knives are easily steeled to bring edge back. The knives are very easily taken care of by washing off blade and drying. For those who think they must hve a different knife for every occasion then this will work fine. Having worked as a meat cutter since the 50's I can cut up any size beef with just the boning knife.( And a Hand Saw for the bones) It is nice to have a 12 inch blade for the Round Steaks, but can get by without.

If you get splinters from the handles, then it is obivious you are unaware how to take care of wood. I have knives from the 50's never one splinter ...of coure I have never washed a knife with a wooden handle in a dish washer either.

These can last a life time.

KitchenAid 8 inch Slicing Knife Red

KitchenAid 8 inch Slicing Knife RedI have been using this knife for about 10 years now and it is still my favorite. It has a nice weight to it, it's well balanced, the handle is comfortable and non-slip, and it has a great edge that sharpens easily. I use this knife for everything. I have a few other more expensive knives and they just sit in the drawer because this one is superior.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but this knife has a really long blade. It is great for slicing my homemade bread, since it can be moved back and forth thru the loaf. It holds an edge very well. I have been using it since September of last year and after an initial sharpening, I have only passed it over my steel a couple of times. Great knife.

ALPHA Heavy Duty Meat Cleaver - 9" Cleaver, Stainless Blade

ALPHA Heavy Duty Meat Cleaver - 9' Cleaver, Stainless BladeThis is a great cleaver. It is very inexpensive but you get a lot for the cost. The cleaver is heavy and easy to work with. It's large size makes it great for getting the job done. I have seen cleavers for many times the price that I didn't think were nearly as good as this one. Overall, I would highly recommend it even against the expensive cleavers.

Nice and heavy. Bigger than available in stores. We are so happy with it. Came quick too. A great buy.

this item, available directly from amazon, arrived fairly quickly but not adequately padded to protect it from rough transit.

despite the fact that it was in a seemingly never-opened blister package, quality of the cleaver was very poor: the blade had a number of smudges and scratches and even one small rust spot.

so back it went to amazon for a credit.

Reed & Barton Crescendo II 18/0 Stainless-Steel 65-Piece Flatware Set with Storage Caddy, Service f

Reed & Barton Crescendo II 18/0 Stainless-Steel 65-Piece Flatware Set with Storage Caddy, Service for 12If you like heft and size in your silverware, this is the set for you! Besides the very bright and polished finish, this continental-sized flatware feels great in your hand and is perfect whether you're serving on your best china or your everyday dinnerware. And one of the very best parts? It comes with 12 extra teaspoons. If you're like me, sometimes those pesky spoons slip into the disposal and get chewed up and ragged. No problem with this set, you have 12 opportunities to replace the one you lost! The set also comes packaged in a wooden tray that slips into your kitchen drawer and can be used as a silverware holder for your buffets and potlucks.

I looked everywhere, both on line and in the brick-and mortars for a set I liked. My biggest concern was whether the set in the picture would look and feel as good in hand. I was more than pleased. This is the best, both in value and quality.

This is sturdy, strong, quality flatware with a serious flaw: rust keeps breaking through the knives on the serrated edge! I even diligently followed the directions with the set not to soak the knives and to avoid letting certain foods set on them before washing (which I have never had to do with flatware). But I'm still getting rusty spots on the cutting edge. What a shame.

I read the reviews on this product before I decided to purchase it from Amazon even though some of the reviewers stated they didn't think the stainless was 18/10 as is stated on Amazon's site. It arrived yesterday and upon examination there were, as another reviewer said, no markings stating it was 18/10 either stamped on the flatware it's self or on the packaging. I decided to send an email to Reed and Barton to see if they could shed some light on this discrepancy, and since I also own a another set of their flatware called Hammered stamped with 18/8 I asked about that also. Here's their reply:

Hello, the Crescendo II is not 18/10. It is 18/chrome (0). If the hammered pattern is stamped 18/8 that is what it is. All of our patterns used to be 18/8 then we went to 18/10 now most of our patterns sold in sets are 18/chrome (0).

I intend to email Amazon with this information and return the Crescendo II set I purchased from them. The Hammered set I own that is 18/8 has held up very well (8 years) with no pitting or staining, but then I only use it for special occasions and hand wash it afterward. It's a beautiful set.

The set is "just OK." Not as heavy as I'd expected and I've also noticed (per another reviewer)some rust on the knives. Better to look at what you're buying in person first before ordering online (she said to herself).

Pourfect Original Spill-Proof 6, 8 and 12 Cup Mixing Bowl Set

Pourfect Original Spill-Proof 6, 8 and 12 Cup Mixing Bowl Set, Blue WillowI was looking for colorful mixing bowls. These are great.

I love the non skid rubber underside and the spout. Perfect for pancake batter!

For some reason I was expecting something with a silicon type feel. But these are a hard plastic. I usually don't trust anything that has a "as seen on tv" sign affixed to it. But this exceeded my expectations. Would definitely buy again if something happened to these guys.

Would be nice as a housewarming present, too.

I purchased them for mixing funnel cake mix in my concession stand. Now I use them everyday in my kitchen.

Excellante Polyethylene Round Cutting Board

Excellante 1/2 by 14-Inch Polyethylene Round Cutting BoardI had, for whatever reason, this idea that I "needed" an 18 inch cutting board and I wanted round and not wood since I abuse everything I have horribly. I never found one so I then ordered this unit in the 1 1/2 inch thickness. Sitting here now looking at it, it is more than big enough and the round size will get down in the sink much better than a large square or rectangle, the main reason I wanted a round board (well, pizza cutting and serving too maybe).

I've split two other wooden boards, a bamboo and a hardwood. I can tell you now, any wood that is glued together can split if you don't care for it and sometimes even if you do. I will never again have to worry over that. The packaging states that this board is the correct hardness to not dull your knives as well. That statement remains to be tested but the size and heft are perfect for a solid cutting surface that won't slide around with a knife cut like some thin little wooden unit.

I like the round shape and it is the size I have been looking for.

Totally Bamboo 2-Sided Poly-Boo Cutting Board, 15-Inch

Totally Bamboo 2-Sided Poly-Boo Cutting Board, 15-InchUsing this cutting board is truly a no brainer! For ages I've used the standard plastic Ikea cutting boards that stain and ware easily and not to mention slip all over my countertops when I'm prepping foodbig mistake! This completely affordable board has it all, my favorite part being that it's double sided with cute little pictures of the foods that are meant to be cut on each side. I've been using the board for a few weeks now and have tested it with some sharp knives and the thing still looks brand new. It also comes clean beautifully and none of the foods I've prepared on either side have stained the board. This will be my go-to gift item for friends and family in the coming months!

The reversible Polly-Boo cutting board is a great tool in the kitchen. The bamboo side is excellent for cutting fruits and vegetables, the Polymer side is excellent at cutting meat, fish and poultry. Both sides work equally well at protecting our counters and knives. What makes this cutting board different from our other cutting boards is that it is two boards in one. It has a raised lip around the edges and the handle that keeps juices from running onto the counters, which our other boards don't and the 15" by 12" size is great for whole chickens, roasts and larger cuts of meat. The handle makes it easy to pick up off the counter with one hand and take out to the BBQ. This is a very good tool that will replace almost all of our current cutting boards. It washes up quickly and easily and that's an A+ coming from one who thinks everything should go in the dishwasher! Oh and my husband LOVES the handle!

Chef'n Tower Grater 4 in 1 Stainless Steel Cheese Grater, Apricot

Chef'n Tower Grater 4 in 1 Stainless Steel Cheese Grater, ApricotWhen I saw this grater offered, I thought "what a clever design".

But the appearance is deceptive: the bottom can easily fall off, there are gaps so little bits of cheese can fall through, and overall the design is very bulky.

Ugh!

Try something else.

This little sucker is sturdy, but it's designed to be used, unlike so many other kitchen devices that seem to be designed to be looked at.

The removable bottom is fantastic for keeping stuff nice and secure. The included hand protector is a God-send to someone like my wife, who has a bad habit of scraping her knuckles on graters.

(Pack of 4) Kid Safe Poly Sandwich Spreaders (Colors May Vary), 7½"

(Pack of 4) Kid Safe Poly Sandwich Spreaders, 7½'I am terrible about reading the dimensions of items, assuming the size based on the typical size of an item but these are really pretty big. I purchased them to go on a colorful cheese display as spreaders as they came up on an Amazon search for such an item but they were way too big for that purpose. They are very pretty and seem completely safe for kids I am glad I purchased them for my son to use but they didn't suit the purpose I actually purchased them for. My fault for not reading the dimensions!

I don't like it when I try to spread mustard on bread and the knife cuts the bread. Use this spreader and you can get the mustrad evenly with one swipe and no fear of ripping the bread. Low-tech and it works. What else could you ask for?

Wusthof Grand Prix II 2-Piece Hollow-Ground Asian Knife Set

Wusthof Grand Prix II 2-Piece Hollow-Ground Asian Knife SetI'm a young college student who works at a restaurant as a waiter. Like many young people, I one day got a fleeting aspiration that would probably go away within a couple of weeks. I wanted to be an awesome cook, so the first thing I did was ask the chef at my restaurant what tools I needed to start. He told me a good kitchen knife is THE essential tool of the chef. He recommended I go to Williams Sonoma and try out every knife possible but warned me that chef knives cost close to $100 dollars each. Whoa! He also said that Santoku blades are very popular these days because they're extremely versatile and feel good in your hands (something about balance).

Nonetheless, I went to Williams-Sonoma the next day and tried out the Henkels, Wustof Classic, Wustof Grand Prix, Wustof Grand Prix 2, Globals, and Shuns. I ultimately chose the Wustof Grand Prix 2 because of the perfect balance in the knife. It felt perfect. The handle was much grippier than the others, extremely light, but not as thin as the Globals (which I thought might lead to a blister), or with the unnatural offset handle of the Shun (Left handers actually feel that it works perfectly I'm a righty like the majority of people). I'm extremely paranoid of cutting myself ever since my mom cut herself pretty bad and after handling that particular knife, I was confident I would never cut myself. I eventually purchased it on Amazon with in an asian knife set (paring knife + santoku).

When I finally used it for the first time, I seriously could not believe how quickly I could cut. I always thought it was skill that the chefs at my workplace would use to dice things, slice meats, or chop veggies. Was I ever wrong! Any idiot using a knife this sharp and this balanced could cut like a master. I was cutting slices of apples so incredibly thin I started laughing! They were so thin, I could see through them! Tomatoes cut with no effort. After purchasing this knife, I started buying more and more kitchen supplies to match that same euphoria.

A year has passed, and for my recent birthday, my friends got me a gift certificate to Williams Sonoma. I am known amongst my friends as the guy who can cook an amazing meal. I owe it all to this knife! I'm very lazy, and if I took the same time cutting stuff as a I used to before I owned this knife, I simply would not cook for myself let alone others. I take this knife with me wherever I cook I refuse to use other people's knives. Even at work, I hate trying out my coworkers knives. They feel unnatural. I've even gotten comments when I cut up fruit for friends. They literally hear it come out of the knife block and look to see what made that sweet shimmering noise.

I rank this as #4 on my list of top 10 things I own. The first 3 being my North Face Goretex Jacket to get me through the winter walking to classes in Michigan. The second being my Computer so I can buy stuff and write reviews here. The third being my waterproof sneakers (again for the winter). I place this knife before my mp3 player, my stereo, my TV, my xbox, my Playstation 2, and all my Calphalon pans put together. I might even go so far as to put it in front of my absolutely adorable toy maltese-poodle mix (he's related to Jessica Simpson's dog). This review may seem a little far-fetched, but I am simply in love with my knife.

Pros Extremely good construction, Perfect Balance, Good Grip, Easy to Clean, Comes presharpened, Haven't needed to resharpen or even hone since I've owned it, looks good, grooves prevent food from sticking, able to cut extremely thin, Handle allows multiple grips to be used.

Cons Not dishwashable, my girlfriend left it in water overnight to soak, left permanent watermarks on my blade. Grr. Not cheap! Have no clue how to claim lifetime warranty, Tang is only 3/4 length (but also makes the knife lighter).

Try out as many knives before you purchase. Only 1 type will feel "right" to you. But if you think like me (safety first) then you'll love this knife.

Edit I wrote this review on just the Santoku Knife. The review for the additional paring knife is below.

The 3 1/2 inch paring knife could have been better had it not had that teardrop design. A more traditional paring knife with the pointy tip would have been much more useful. You have no clue how frustrating it is to cut dill with this teardrop style paring knife as opposed to a traditional paring knife. Also, the Grand Prix II grip doesn't work as effectively for the smaller knife. It seems a bit more slippery than the Classic line when it comes to the paring knife.

But still awesome knife set overall.

This set is just 20 dollars more for the pairing knife, than the one without. You can not buy a Wusthof knife for 20 dollars. I watched Rachael Ray for too long on the Food Channel cutting easily at her veggies. These knives are some of the best quality knives you can buy. The specially made blade does enable a quick, accurate cut.

The grip and the weight of these knives give them an excellent balance that simply is impossible to be beat. These two knives have quickly become my most used knives for everyday. I would highly recommend these knives if you are looking to start or add to your knive collection.

Bought these knives for my wife and she says the larger knife she would rate a 5 and the little knife she would rate a 3, hence the 4-star rating. The larger knife seems to hold an edge longer than the smaller blade, but that's probably due to the different usage of each knife. Have been careful to wash/dry after each use, so no rust yet. Overall, very happy with the purchase.

Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper

Norpro Stoneware Butter KeeperNever having used one before, I was pleased to see how well the butter keeper works. It's such a practical gadget based on a simple principle.

Unfortunately, after about six months the Norpro revealed a problem that makes me think it should be replaced. The glazing developed many (almost invisible) hairline cracks under the butter, and oil from the butter was then absorbed by the clay container. After washing and drying, the container now slowly oozes rancid oil through the glaze. It continues oozing for many days, even after repeated washing.

I have come to love having softened butter on hand, and I will definitely buy another butter keeper, but I'll try a different brand. Perhaps this is one instance of getting what you pay for.

It keeps butter soft and ready to use. Water should be changed every 2-3 days to keep it fresh. We use a lot of butter and this makes it more convenient. It's not too large (about 4" high and 3.75" across) and holds a stick of butter. The easiest way to put butter in is to let it get soft before using a knife to pack it into the bowl on the lid. I try to get all the air pockets out and not let the butter mound over at the top. When the top goes into the base it will push the butter further in. When taking off the top, I usually let the excess water drip into the base so it doesn't get too messy. Washes easily in hot soapy water. You could put the whole thing in the fridge if you're not going to use the butter for a while.

Buy Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper Now

The ambient temperature in the room where you keep this has a significant effect on how well it works. It's pretty much the ideal way to store butter if the room temperature stays constant between about 60 and 75 degrees F. Below 60 degrees, the butter will be too hard to spread without tearing soft bread; above 75 degrees it will begin to melt and spoil even though air can't get to it. I much prefer fresh air, so I use heat and A/C as little as possible. When the indoor temperature falls within the optimum range I use and enjoy the butter keeper very much. Since that works out to be about half the time here in Western NY, I'm giving this three stars. The rest of the year I keep the butter in the fridge. I haven't seen anybody else even mention temperature as an issue, so I'm doing it.

Read Best Reviews of Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper Here

It really does work. I was kind of skeptical, but I really do hate spreading butter when it's cold. I hate it melting and making a mess on my counter too. So I thought I'd try it.

This little guy keeps the butter contained, soft and spreadable. I even bought my brother one for his kitchen.

Want Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper Discount?

I've used this butter bell for quite some time. I make homemade butter from fresh raw (unpasteurized) milk and the butter bell keeps it fresh on my counter top. The butter bell works well in cooler months but when summer sets in, it is possible for the butter to slide into the water --butter is still good, just scoop it out of the water. In winter months, change the water every few days; in summer months, use very cold water and change it everyday. Use around 1.5" of salted water in your butter bell to make the seal. The purpose of the water is to seal the butter off so it will not oxidize as quickly. The purpose of the salt is to stop mold in the summer months. It sounds like a lot work but it doesn't take 10 seconds. For those of you who buy retail butter, it is pasteurized and usually salted so it keeps longer than homemade butter. In Summer, place your butter bell in the fridge after retiring for the evening. First thing in the morning, take it out for the day. In winter, if changing the water regularly your butter will stay fresh on the counter for several weeks; however, in summer, your butter will only stay fresh for a week. If using raw butter in the butter bell you can only leave it out for a week in winter and a few days in summer. You must wash your butter bell in hot water and soap when all butter has been used before putting in more butter or it might mold (especially if you don't use salt in your water). Again, it may seem like a lot of time spent but it is not once you do it a few times it only takes seconds. I hope this helps.

Chicago Cutlery Basic Shears, Black

Chicago Cutlery Basic Shears, BlackThe shears are of very good quality and a bargain at the price that I paid. I am very happy.

I needed a couple of pairs of cheap shears. They would be used during a project and probably thrown away after it was done. I found two about the same price that fit the bill as far as price and size. I ordered one of each and after comparing them I believe they came from the same factory in China. They were cheap and still sharp enough for the job after about week of working cutting mostly cardboard packing material. After the job was finished I gave them to a couple of my helpers to take home to their wives.

Now if I had planned to keep them for myself and use them for years I wouldn't have been happy with them. If I had paid $20+ a pair I would have returned them. They are not really good shears but instead they are good very cheap throw away ones.
