Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome

I used to have a green and white Krups Open Master that opened cans in a simailar way. It was thrown out during a kitchen remodel and was later discontinued. I never liked the replacement can openers because the dirty can lid and cutting blade would sink into the food and contaminate it and just make a mess.

I just received the Hamilton Beach can opener a few minutes ago, but this 76606 works as well or better than the old Krups so far.

I'm not sure why this isn't the way all can openers work. I don't see the point of can openers that work the old fashioned way.

I loved my Krups Open Master 404 until it stopped working recently. I found that The Krups, which had NO BLADE that touched the food so as to leave food on the blade as with most canopeners, is no longer made or avaialbe except on ebay. So, I started looking to see what is now available. I tried some other brands. These "other brands" had the typical "blade" that cut into the top of the can and the blade TOUCHED the food inside the can. Thus, food was left ON the blade. To me, after using the Krups for 7 years, this was/is VERY unsanitary---having part of the juice or syrup of the food left to dry out and collect germs on the blade. The only way to avoid having food left on the "cutting blade" of most canopeners is to wash the blade EVERY time you open a can. This isn't difficult, but it takes a minute or two which seems like a lot of effort when you're trying to fix a meal for yourself or your family. Enter the Hamilton Beach 76606. THIS ONE DOES NOT GET ANY FOOD ON ANY BLADE. In fact, I didn't SEE any blade on it that touches the food! So, it's as good, or almost as good, as my old Krups. Praise the Lord! :o) boland7214@aol.

This is undoubtably the best electric can opener ever made. It cuts the lid along the side of the can under the beaded lip. It does a perfect job,it is quiet, and does not leave any metal shavings. It will also cut the lids that have pull ring tabs. This saves your fingers. I give this opener a 5 star score.

Everything written about this can opener on this site is true except!

I bought the unit after a lot of research and all the positive reviews. And they were all true excellent unit,....until shortly after the one year warranty expired (isn't that always the way.) Went to open a can it whirred, spun around, did all the usual stuff except the can wasn't opened. After a lot of looking and examining, it appeared the piercer/cutter blade was missing apparently broken off (altho I never found any pieces.)

I called Hamilton Beach after checking, the lady said there " were no replaceable parts in the unit." So, I've got a paperweight. I asked her what brand she suggested I buy next time around she said "well, H-B of course." I told her all my previous can openers had lasted 20 years or more and I replaced them just because I got sick of them. I didn't think one year's service with no way to replace the cutter was acceptable, so, despite my admiration of the unit, I'd have to look elsewhere.

Using an estimate of cans opened and the purchase price, I calculate the cost to open each can came out to more than 10 cents/can!

I favored the results of my research prior to purchase. After receiving it, I was impressed with the size & weight. It's easy on the eyes and I like the way it operates. Since I use a lot less in the way of canned goods than most people I know, I didn't actually try it out for several days. Once I did, my reaction was "wow!". I do believe I have the best can opener *ever*. If this unit holds up well over a protracted period of time, I'll remain a 'happy camper'. Now, for the reason I only gave it 4 stars i/o 5. Upon opening perhaps the 3rd or 4th can, I noticed something *very* disturbing. As I removed the lid, I spotted a very thin strand of metal (about 1-1/4 inches long) jutting out from the top of the can (perpendicular from the body of the can).

Promply removing it, I could only think that had it fallen *into* the contents of the can I might have ingested it! To better illustrate, I *could* have proceeded to empty the contents into a bowl or saucepan and had that metal fall off in the process. Hopefully, this won't happen again....but....anyone buying this can opener *should* be aware of the possibility & be vigilant in it's use. At this time, I really think this *is* the best one on the market and I'm darned glad to have it. Hope this helps anyone considering the purchase.

Gorgeous Grey Marble Cheese Board & Knife by RSVP

This is an elegant looking cheese board, hence why I ordered it.

But I wouldn't reccommend it for these two reasons:

the knife that comes with it easily scratches the marble. This happened both times I've used the cheese board.

it has threet small "legs" on the bottom that when you try cutting cheese don't balance well. The board has tipped over a few times when guests have tried cutting a piece of cheese.

I've gone back to using my older/sturdier wooden cheese board.

This may work well if you already cut up the cheese and use it that way?

This cheese board is great. It is not real heavy and doesn"t take up much room. Fits nicely on a small table or a small island leaving room for other things.

I just got this in the mail today, and after reading the reviews to see if it was normal to have a rounded corner on this product, I realized that I just received somebody else's returned defected product. I sincerely believe I received the returned product from "Jemarie Moiselle's" march 13 review from amazon. Additionally, it was packaged insecurely, sliding around the box. I am deeply disappointed because of its defect. Still deciding if it's even worth it to return an item like this at a cheaply priced item. You think that amazon.com would get rid of the product or return it to the manufacturer because of the defect? NO, instead they throw it back into the pool of inventory to make sales...that's so ridiculous!

Cook's Illustrated rated this sharpening steel as the best, and I think they're absolutely correct! I have used this steel regularly for the past year or two, and my knives have never come close to staying this sharp before... It's awesome!

After months upon months of researching reviews and articles on every knife sharpener and method to keep kitchen knives sharp, I happened upon a review for diamond steels that made sense to me. Again, more research to determine any differences among diamond steels -other than price. I chose this Ultimate Edge Model 10W . . . and I'm very happy with my selection.

My Wusthof knives have an easily-achieved, very sharp edge again. Since I was already comfortable using a steel, switching to a diamond steel was easy. Albeit, I do use the diamond steel more slowly, keeping my knife blade at the recommended angle, and I use it only when necessary. I still use my regular steel whenever I pick up a knife to do a cutting task. The only -minor -concern I have is that this diamond steel has a plastic handle that may not last for many years, although it seems sturdy.

Bottom line, this is a relatively inexpensive way to sharpen my knives without the damage that a bad electric sharpener can do. I'm pleased and would recommend using a diamond steel to anyone with expensive knives and concerns about keeping them sharp.

KitchenAid Triple Riveted 16-Piece Set in Silverite Block

I have had these knives for over a year now. Not one speck of rust. These knives a great. You never realize how bad your knives are until you use a good set of knives. I had a set of never-need-sharpening knives that I have had for about ten years. I always thought they were fine. As I lost pieces of the set due to breakage over the years I started looking for a new set. I decided on these. What a difference! They cut so well. It makes cooking much more enjoyable. I used to cut carrots and they'd go flying off the cutting board. I realize now it was because I wasn't using a sharp knife and they were more or less being "snapped" through than sliced through. These knives cut through the carrots with such ease, and the carrots stay right there on the cutting board instead of flying off. Every knife I have used out of this block has been sturdy, sharp, and rust-free. And it is nice to have the sharpener built into the block. I was kind of leery about the sharpener, thinking it may not be as nice as the sharpening rods in other knife sets; but the sharpener works quite well. I'm very pleased with this set.

This is a fairly good set of home chef knives. I have used high-end forged chefs knives, this set is not that. I have used 15 year old economy serrated knives, this set is not that either. These knives are a good mid-range stainless home chefs set. In fact it was a great surprise that this set is much closer to quality basic forged knives than economy stamped knives while being priced far closer to the latter.

An issue I have, not just with this set but almost all all-in-one home sets, is that it includes "steak knives" as part of its total. I would prefer to buy separate sets that would allow my cooking knives and my table knives to be separate and have more cooking knives included. That said, this set has a good range of the most needed cooking knives and the heft and balance of the knives are pretty good. The handles appear to be phenolic or similar material (box didn't say). They could have been smoothed and polished better but that isn't anything a years' worth of use won't hide.

The "silverite" block is painted wood and there are grippy rubber feet on the bottom. It is at a nice low angle which let you pull the knives to you as they come out rather than up into your kitchen counters like some more upright designs. Unfortunately it is clearly used for multiple knife sets. Because of this a few of the knife slots are overlong for the knives they hold in this set allowing those knives to shift a bit. It doesn't affect anything other than to make the handles appear misaligned if the block gets shaken. If you're OCD about that and a little crafty this can be "corrected" with some filler in those slots.

The sharpener actually does a nice job. I was skeptical, never having used that style sharpener, but it will put the edge back on a knife with a few strokes. I would caution that if you have a knife with a nick in it to take it out with a steel first to avoid putting a nick in the sharpening stones (ceramic?).

Over all I am quite pleased with the set and with reasonable expectations for this sized set in this price range I think others will too.

I had been waffling over buying a new set of knives for a long time. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted a nice set that had a sharpener. This was exactly what I was looking for.

Got it for mom on Mother's Day. We love it! It will cut through anything with barely any pressure. Its dishwashable and makes quick work of cutting veggies. My brother works in a butcher shop cutting meat for a living and they will only use Mundial products. Well worth the money. Its the last knife you will ever buy.

Wallace Dark Walnut 2 Drawer Chest with Feet

Holds a service for 12 with no problem. The two drawers will not hold longer pieces in slots. They have to lie sideways. The slots are too narrow to hold some pieces. It will not hold a large soup ladle.

This is a beautiful, well made chest that I ordered for a wedding present. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the hardware. The knobs are not as nice a quality as the chest itself. The first one I received, had several of them rolling around in the box and when we tried to screw them back on, the screw shaft was embedded sideways in the drawer making it impossible to put the knob back on. We exchanged it (no problem with the exchange and the replacement arrived immediately) and the new chest had the same issue with the knobs not staying on. The screws just aren't long enough and the lining is glued to the insides of the chest making it impossible to remove and replace the screws with longer ones. We ended up putting a drop of super glue on the inside of the knob to help it not fall off again. For the price it was worth the hassle. Other chests I looked at were well above $100. I am planing on ordering another one for my daughter.

Lipper International Bamboo 10-1/4-by-14-Inch Flatware Tray

It's well built, solid, not bad to look at. But it's nothing life changing. It's a tray. It's good at holding things. That's about it.

Listed as 10 1/4 but its really 10 1/2 which is 1/8 too wide for my drawer. Otherwise would have gotten 4 stars, looks nice but the fitment of the dividers isn't perfect.

Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Bread Knife

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Culinar line is an all stainless steel look, rather than a black handle. Although the picture and some descriptions want you to think this is a single piece knife, be advised that the hand is a separate piece of stainless steel molded onto the tang. I personally prefer the handle of the Grand Prix and Classic, because the grip is surer for me, but this is, to some extent, a matter of personal preference. This series "looks" more professional to some (like a Viking stove).

This particular model, the 8 inch bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy. My only quibble is the length. I find the 9 inch bread knife to be a better length for most loaves of bread.

I recommend the Wusthof 8" bread knife, but I would try out the 8 inch and the 9 inch to see which you prefer.

where do i start. The hammered damascus is great. Its balance is good and correct weight for a japanese gyutoh. dont expect german kniives weighting because japanese blades are usually much lighter. thin blade and looks to me about a 14 degree angle on the blade. if you want to do heavy prep work which includes chops and boning dont use this knife. it is made for fine prep work.

if u want to cut meat and fish and poultry go get a deba not a gyutoh. great prep knife and extremely sharp out of the box. I ran in it on a 8000 grit whet stone out of the box after and a natural stone after and it so sharp that i can split hair, and shave my entire arm in on pass dont try this at home if youve never done it before with an exteremly sharp knife. all in all 5 out 5 i love it. the petty or fruit/paring knife is also great nice light weight for intricate cuts and super thin slices and vegetable peels. i like it making rolls with petty's way better than a nagiri. buy it cuz for the price you cant beat introductory japanese knife. If you worked alot with japanese knifes go buy ao-ko steel and be prepared to spend at least a thousand or 4k in fact for a real ao ko steel knife.

I recently ordered the sushi chef Petty Gyuto Set from Yoshihiro Cutlery. The hammered Damascus blades are well-made & truly works of art! Both the Gyuto & the Petty are easy to use, even for a complete amateur like myself, cutting effortlessly through everything I've thrown at them. The price was hard to beat, as well, especially after looking at comparable blades from some better-known brands. My only disappointment is that I did not find them sooner!

Like almost everyone who buys this kind of knife, I have many examples of quality cutlery including Wusthof, Zwilling, Kai and Shun, As this was my new condo present for myself, I wanted something really special. The Yoshihiro design is obviously beautiful, and the its balance is great and its handle is surprisingly very good and light,

providing excellent comfort and control. No presure required for cutting and carving. Therefore a 5+ compared to my other knife and hope to enjoy cooking in my new place.

I've had this knife since early 2012. Dropped it yesterday and the blade broke in half about an inch from the handle when it hit the ceramic tile floor. Broke my heart! I use this knife every day and love it. I will be contacting customer service tomorrow and see if this type of breakage is covered under any guarantee. If not I will order another. So despite it breaking I give it 4 stars, because it is a great knife.

I gave Schmidt Brothers a call and was sent a new knife. A few questions on where it broke and their concern that this should not have happened. With this kind of customer service I would increase my rating to 5 stars.

I absolutely love kitchen knives! I got this knife after seeing a review about it in a magazine. It came super sharp and so far has kept it's sharpness well. I like the wooden handle. I recommend hand washing it though, because as I've run it through the dishwasher the wood on the handle has gotten sort of rough.

Black & Decker EC475B Extra-Tall Electric Can Opener, Black

Positive it runs very smooth and opens beautifully when it works, for maybe 9-12 months, just long enough to get past the warranty. Does open large cans easily, again, when it works. Negatives -must be more plastic gears, it works great but will not shut off even after can is removed. You have to unplug and wait. Very annoying when making a large pot of chili, etc., when there are 8-10 cans to be opened. Also, will not open, it NEVER did, small cans of tomato paste, I have to get out the crank opener. The small can just will not puncture and turn. Would NOT purchase again, would not recommend.

Cheap, cheap, cheap!!! The magnet won't stay on the opener and I end up with both it and the top INSIDE the can of food. Huh? Also won't stop running sometimes, even after the can is opened. Don't waste your money....

I absolutely hate this beast in my kitchen! So why have I put up with it for over two years? I need to have my head examined! I'm getting better though, as I'm on Amazon tonight browsing for a new can opener, and you can be sure it won't be another Black and Decker. I think they should stick to making tools for the handyman and forget appliances. We had a B &D toaster oven several years back that performed almost as miserably as this can opener.

On the positive side it does have a nice sleek design and looks good on the kitchen counter. The knife sharpener is a good feature and does work. The "one touch" idea would be great if only the can would stay in the cutter. Ditto for the "tall can" idea. Great, but the cans keep falling out. Very few cans of any size have ever stayed in and gone completely around. In order to even start, one must peel the label from the can first or it gets chewed up and causes a wad of paper at the cutter which in turn also causes the can to slip out. Other times this "beast" is a tease and only partially opens a can. You wind up with 3 or 4 cuts in the lid and the can opener cannot be persuaded to go around again and cut through completely.

I agree with the reviewer who wanted a minus star to rate this with, except I would like about minus 5! If you see this appliance in a store, run the other way. Do NOT waste your hard earned dollars on a purchase.

The Black and Decker EC475B makes a really sleek door stop. Even on days when the house is open, and a breeze wafts through, it has never failed to hold the door in place. I'd suggest removing the cutting head to improve the symmetry--it is of no particular use anyway and can be discarded.

For those wanting to open cans, I now use an EKCO Magic Glide C-865, one from my parents' estate, found in the "junk drawer" in their kitchen. It is the long handled version of what many campers use and has never failed, unlike "electric can openers" that seldom work, foisted off on unsuspecting buyers in mega-stores. Yes, the Ekco Magic Glide C-865 is an antique, available on EBay for around $16 + shipping. But since it is just a basic tool you might want to pick up a brand new Ekco hand-held can opener at the gadget aisle of your grocery store for under $3, or a fancy model of it for under $10. Or, if electric "pre-doorstop" models still call to you, maybe keep searching Amazon reviews for one less of a turkey.

I made the mistake of purchasing a second black and decker can opener after I threw the first one in the garbage! The second one would not open a can either..... so guess where it is going!

Beehive Acrylic Plastic Butter Dish

While this butter dish is very pretty and looks almost indestructible, it has a serious design flaw. The inside dimensions are about 1/2" too small.

Unless the cube of butter is in the exact center of the dish, the inside of the lid can touch the cube. As a result, when the dish is put into the refrigerator, the butter solidifies and "glues" itself to the inside of the lid making it hard to get the lid off later. Extremely annoying!

To add to the problem, the dish curves inward slightly on both ends, making even less room for the butter cube and more chance for contact with the lid. The plastic lid is over 1/4" thick which is part of the reason there is so little width room for the butter.

The dish is really quite beautiful. It just needs to have a little more room for the butter.

I should have heeded Mr. Kaufman's warning. He was right.

I needed a new butter dish and based on the reviews that the beehive design made it easy to handle, I ordered one. When it arrived, I found that the bottom piece was designed with the outside edge sitting "too close to the ground" so it is hard to pick up. That plus the fact that it was rather pricey make me wish I had looked further and selected something different.

This Lexan Clear Acrylic butter dish is the next best thing to toast! After going through 3 glass butter dishes at roughly $5 a pop, so far this one appears indestructible. Taking care of my 86 year old father and trying to avoid accidents with broken glass I think this butter dish will do the trick.

It looks just like glass while setting on the kitchen counter or the table. Your average 1¼" X 1¼" X 4½" stick of butter fits perfectly with ½" to spare on either side and a ¼" at the ends when placed in exact center. The base has a lip that the cover fits into snuggly but not tight enough to be picked up by it. Like all acrylic products, I recommend "hand washing" rather than the dishwasher. Ya never know. You just might end up with those tiny cracks left by the high heat and it would be a shame because this butter dish looks so nice.

I've been using this butter dish for a month now and it still looks the same when it was delivered. So far, knives haven't left any cut or scuff marks on the base.

Yes, I recommend this butter dish. It's well worth the money!

Chroma 4-Piece Steak Knives

First I was very surprised, when I first time have seen the steak knives in a three star michelin restaurant in Alsace in France. They have no serration. They were extremely sharp. So I asked the chef, Mr. Westermann, why they are like this. And he explainded. They have no serration, so you can easy resharpen them by yourself. This way you always have the sharpest steak knife. If you resharpen them ;-)

I do it very easy frequently with a stone.

Cuisipro 4-Piece Stainless Steel Oval Measuring Cup Set

I bought these to replace some old tin cups. They are great. The oval shape makes it easier to get it into a jar. And they are nice and heavy duty.

The clean up nicely and make cooking more pleasant!

I love OXO products but was greatly disappointed by their metal measuring cup set. I saw these at a local store and fell in love with them. They are oval so they fit better into containers with narrow lids and they are super sturdy handles that don't bend with normal use. Yes they are more expensive than other measuring cups out there but they are worth the extra money.

This is the 1st time I've owned stainless steel measuring cups, and actually bought them because I saw somwhere that these were nice because of the oval shape. Yes, the shape is nice, but that's just the 1st of the nice things about these cups.

I love the thick metal -just feels like they'll last forever, and I like that about things I buy. They're also easy to clean up, as food/stuff just slips out when wiped more easily than with plastic and glass cups. One feature that I really love is that the cups fit nicely into each other and will sit nicely on the counter as a little unit, even with the attaching ring connected to them.

And addressing the shape, I must say that it is handy when dipping them into bags, cannisters, and even jars. I also like that when pouring from the cups, the ingredients don't flop into the bowl, with or without other ingredients, in a big heap, but spread out because of the "ovalness" of the cup -I noticed that this greatly lessens that icky "dust storm" when using flours.

I hope I won't have to buy measuring cups again with this set. I've gone through so many in the past that have either melted on the stovetop, gotten cup or chipped, or have broken. I expect to pass these down to my daughter!
