WMF Manaos/Bistro 50-Piece Fall Flatware Set, Service for 8The items (forks/spoons/knives/etc.) were thrown into an unsealed/unlabeled box. See attached image.

I bought this as a gift and it looks like I stole them from a restaurant.

A nearly $600 set with NO packaging. Even $20 bargain sets are packaged. Shame.

I recently picked up the WMF Manaos/Bistro 50 piece flatware set as part of a lighting deal, and I'm very glad that I did. Included in the set are 8 of the following; soup spoons, tablespoons, teaspoons, dinner forks, salad forks, and butter knives. Also included are two salad serving spoons. The utensils are packed in a plain cardboard box with each piece individually wrapped in plastic.

The Quality of the pieces is very high. They have a nice weight to them, and are well balanced in the hand. The tines on all of the forks are nicely lined up, and the knives have a very sharp non-serated edge. The high polished chrome is bright and brilliant and the pieces all survived multiples runs in the dishwasher without problem.

Design wise the Manaos/Bistro pieces are very simple with little flourish. Indeed, while some may find them a bit plain I appreciated the subtle bevel on the end of the handles and the elegant and smoothly contoured handles that narrow towards the middle.

All in all... an excellent and durable set of elegant flatware.

I just received my WMF Manaos/Bistro 50-Piece Fall Flatware Set, Service for 8. It comes in a simple box but each item is bagged/protected in an individual plastic bag.

Having already a WMF set, I became suspicious of the weight and the quality while unpacking. Hitting my "old" knife and the new knife slightly on the counter, sounds were completely different. I noted that the new knifes have no serrate although the knife on the picture seems to have.

I bought also other itens to complete above set, like a second serving spoon, a source ladle, ice cream spoons; all Bistro/Manaos. Most of the pieces are made in Vietnam, others in China. On some items the stamp even says: WMF ...Vietnam. One serving spoon made in China, the other one in Vietnam...and you can see and feel the difference!!!

My opinion: I am quite disappointed! Thought I would get quality made in Germany, like my old set. But for day-to-day, it might be OK; even without the serrate. I will let my wife decide if we return the product to Amazon.

I bought this set as a replacement for a cheese board and knives set I lost. I am very impressed with the quality of both the board and the knives (especially for the price). I am a little disappointed in the size (although it is stated in the dimensions I was just envisioning something a bit bigger), but it is still nearly perfect for what I need. I will be interested to see how well it wears after time, but the materials seem to be of high quality. All-in-all, I would highly recommend it for yourself or for a gift!

The quality is nice, it doesn't feel cheap at all. I would not recommend this for a party or a big event because of the size. It's not small but I think it's more of a personal size. Probably for one person, if you love cheese, this is a great set.

Thomas by Rosenthal Loft Round Mug

Thomas by Rosenthal Loft Round MugThis is a great mug, stylish, sleek, and spare. I agree that there's less function than form, as the handle is small and sometimes my knuckles come into contact with the hot sides. That said, I tend to hold coffee mugs in my palms, so it's not such an issue for me. If you have big hands or knuckles, you might want to keep this mug's ergonomics in mind, but I still think this is a beautiful mug that deserves its award. And I am also quite pleased to be able to buy something made in Germany, so I just reordered one more.

This cup is very elegant but it is really hard to hold. If you're a righty, it tilts left unless you put a lot of pressure on your thumb against the told part of the handle. Also, in order to hold it, you have to slide your 3rd and 4th fingers through the holder but it ends up touching the cup, which may be hot from coffee or tea. My mother and mother in law both made the same comment that the ergonomics of the cup is NOT GOOD. Oh well, at least it's kinda pretty though.

Rosenthal Loft (by Thomas) mugs come in two sizes: the smaller (9 ounces), which comes as part of the 16-piece service for 4, and the larger (13 ounces), available as open stock from several vendors. The trouble is, many sites don't tell prospective buyers which size they're looking at, pricing, and possibly buying. Nine-ounce mugs are useless for serving or drinking in our house; I'll keep them, but only for scrambling eggs or, for example, mixing small quantities of tartar sauce. The 13-ounce size mugs are, like the 9-ounce mugs, lovely to look at -but as another reviewer has said, difficult to hold without putting some part of your hand into direct contact with the hot wall of the cup.

I love my set, which I assembled from one 16-piece service for 4 and many other pieces we are more likely to use every day -bread and butter plates, for example, and plenty of salad plates for serving sandwiches and such. The pattern is lovely, but under some light will give an impression of grayness (from the micro-miniature shadows, I suppose, cast by the tiny ridges of the design.

If you find plain white dinnerware boring, but patterns annoying to live with as time passes, Rosenthal's Loft is a lovely, high-quality, affordable compromise. Played against strong colors (in the food or table linens), in a suitably lit room, it's just spectacular. Don't be surprised if you should discover your guests turning it over to see who made it; personally, I find the Rosenthal name and the words "Made in Germany" comforting.

Zyliss Smoothglide Peeler

Zyliss Smoothglide Peeler, GreenThe ergonomic handle of the Zyliss Smoothglide peeler, may be a little large for some with smaller hands, but if your hands are big enough, you should have pretty good control of the cutting blade, which has a normal straight cutting edge. Zyliss's Soft Skin Peeler, is a very similar product, except that it is red, and has a blade with a serrated edge. The serrated blade is much sharper, and has a fantastic bite! If you don't mind some curved edges, the Soft Skin Peeler is more reliable, and does a better job. It is simply wicked at shredding.

If you prefer straightedge cuts, this peeler is pretty good, although the blade could stand a little sharpening. The handle has a rubber grip strip that helps with traction, particularly when the handle or your hands are wet. There is also a cutting tip for digging out potato eyes, seeds, or other imperfections. Both the Smoothglide, and the Soft Skin Peeler, are eligible for Amazon's 4 for 3 program.

I treated myself to this vegetable peeler after having used the old, metal kind for years. I've purchased other Zyliss kitchen tools in the past and they do make excellent quality items. Check out their ice cream scoop.

I first used this over the holidays when peeling potatoes for a large group dinner. It was very sharp, had good balance, and was comfortable in my hand. It seemed to take a slightly thicker slice than my old peeler, but was not excessive, and, in my mind, the job being much faster and requiring less effort was a fair trade off. It has the metal "eye" removing tip which is very sharp and works slick. There is also a plastic blade protector on it when new that doesn't stay on well. I'm not sure if it's meant to but it would be nice as it would be easy to slice your finger while searching through the drawer without it being in place.

I highly recommend this vegetable peeler, and Zyliss kitchen tools, if you're looking for an upgrade to your existing ones.

The narrower grip is not an asset in this tool. Suppose you're making punch. As you hold a lemon to peel it (to mix the peels with sugar, yum), your steadying thumb will lie farther forward on the fruit, directly in the path of the blade, which is exactly how I cut myself.

With the Oxo Goodgrip peeler, the wider handle leaves your thumb a little further back, not completely out of danger, but a whole lot less likely to be cut. I've never had a cut from the Oxo; the Zyliss got me but good on its first day.

The Y-peeler from Zyliss does not have this problem. Again, your thumb winds up closer to the end of the blade where you're more likely to be able to get it out of the way if your stroke slips.

... I stumbled across this one at Sur la Table. It fits my hands perfectly and allows for a very comfortable grip due to the curved handle. I like that the peeler is stabilized at both ends due to the handle extension and additionally has the sharp top edge for removing bad parts of the vegetable. The sharp peeling edge also has more support behind it, thereby making short work of a tricky potato eye.

For many years, I used an old fashioned simple and cheap all-metal peeler. It wasn't the most comfortable to grip for long periods of time, but it was by far the best functioning peeler. Unfortunately since it was rusting, it needed to finally be replaced.

After trying three other peelers including ones by Cuisenart and KitchenAid, I found not all peelers are created equal. With many, I was struggling just to peel on tougher skins like sweet potato, mostly because only one side of the peeler was reinforced with the handle. The Zyliss is reinforced on both ends and removes every peel I've attempted smoothly and cleanly. We still have our KitchenAid peeler, but Zyliss is my go-to. It is extremely sturdy, comfortable to use and the best functioning peeler I've used to date.

To keep the blades sharp, I always hand wash!

Dexter Russell Sani-Safe Orange Handle 5 1/2' Boning HookI wish I had purchased a set of meat hooks years ago. As a line cook I didn't often have to lug around large pieces of dead animal and so this isn't usually something you find in most restaurant kitchens, let alone homes. I do a lot more butchery now, and while I don't work in meatpacking or at a butchers' shop, I see these used at at the local slaughterhouse, and they appear to stand up to professional-level usage. It certainly makes moving half carcasses much easier and safer, especially if you don't have a rail. It has a highly grippable and comfortable handle and does an excellent job of keeping hands and fingers out of the way of a razor sharp knife. Very easy to clean and sanitize, does not collect fat or other junk in any crevices. I use these often at work, and if I did any kind of hunting or home butchery I'd have at least a couple of them lying around. They are extremely pointy and sharp -I keep half wine corks on the ends of mine, as they live in my kitchen toolbox and I find puncture wounds to be unpleasant.

If you're one of the relatively few people who needs to own meat hooks, these are ones you'll want to have.

My husband used this boning hook for our first home-butcher experience of our cow. It did exactly what it is supposed to do: hold large chunks of meat so that you can carry them with ease. We actually wished that we had a few more for the rest of us that were helping! Very durable, holds the meat easy, and is comfortable on the hands. It was able to hold quite large pieces with ease. Highly recommend!

Although I can't complain about the hook it self, I am totally unhappy with this purchase. If the item being sold is just ONE, then don't put two of them in the picture. Especially when I could have bought the exact same one for $8 elsewhere. I went ahead with the purchase thinking I was getting two of these things and it would have been cheaper to buy this thru Amazon when tax and shipping cost was applied to the $8. I thought I was getting a deal but instead I feel ripped off.

I have to admit I was looking at the expensive $160.00 sharpeners and read the 4 reviews for this item. They all claimed that it was great so I figured I would give it a try. Here are my thoughts:

1. Initial Reaction when I first opened the box was. I GOT SWINDLED. This looks like a pile of junk

2. After reading the directions: I GOT SWINDLED. This looks like a pile of junk

3. After using it for the first time: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It REALLY WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overview: The main unit is a T shaped piece of aluminum which is in two pieces (Two L brackets). It has notches in it for the different angles you want to put on the knife, i.e. How sharp do you want it to be. You place the knife between the two pieces of aluminum and tighten it in place. You then pick up the coarse stone which is one of the items in the picture that look like screw drivers. You hold onto the base of the of the T with the blade facing you and put the metal rod of the stone into the angle notch you want to use and push the stone towards the angle bracket. You then pull it back out move the stone about ¾ of the stone width down the blade and repeat until you have done the entire side of the blade. Next you flip the angle bracket upside down and repeat for the other side of the blade. You do the same thing using the medium and finally the fine stone. Once done depending on the angle you chose you will have a wickedly sharp knife.

PROS: IT WORKS PERFECTLY!

CONS: Ok you're not paying $160.00 for it so it has some. Most of the cons go away once you realize you do NOT have to press hard to get the job done.

1. Kind of cheaply made but could easily last a lifetime with proper use.

2. Holding onto the base of an L bracket is kind of stupid and difficult the first time you try to use it. They should have put some sort of hand grip to make it easier to hold on to.

3. Depending on how hard you press and how long the blade is (Long kitchen knife) it is pretty hard not to have the knife swivel between the brackets. Once I realized I only had to apply light pressure this problem went away.

4. You're pushing the stone over the blade. Do not slip or get your fingers in the way or you will be a bloody mess. Once again if you applying light pressure and are paying attention so your fingers do not get in the way it is not an issue.

5. When you first put oil on the stones it instantly disappears. This is not really a con as the stones are new and thirsty but once they get used repeatedly this issue goes away and you still have plenty of oil left.

6. The metal shaft of the stone should be steel not aluminum so it cannot accidently get bent which would mess up the angle. Once again unless you are applying way too much pressure this should not happen, but let's face it people drop thinks so steel would have been better.

7. Depending on the angle chosen you could have the stone come in contact with the T bracket. This is more of the user paying attention when setting the blade between the angle brackets.

8. If you do press to hard on the stone and temporarily bow the knife the stone will come in contact with the metal sides of the blade and leave scratch marks. Once again use light pressure.

Conclusion: It works great and YES I would definitely recommend and buy it myself again. No I have no intentions of buying the $160.00 sharpener as this one works great. When you first get it try it out on a long junk kitchen knife that you do not care about. This will allow you to practice with how much pressure to apply. I am pretty good with it after several tries and using light pressure I can do one side of the blade using one stone in less than 20 seconds. I then come around for a second pass since I am using only very light pressure (part of the 20 seconds). Doing an entire knife on both sides using all three stones takes me about 3 minutes. I could go faster but I want to make sure the blade is not scratched and comes out perfectly and I do not want to get stupid and cut myself. I do not recommend this unit if you are not coordinated holding the T bracket in one hand and sliding the stone over the blade with the other. However, for most people especially those who have worked with tools in the past this is a much cheaper alternative than paying $160.00 and it really does work!

Let me say that had it not been for a few things, this kit has the capability of producing an excellent edge, once i was done making some changes. I like the idea of buying a product and not having to fix it in order for it to work properly. This would be a 5-star product, a few key things aside. Here's what i didn't like and what you'll deal with out of the box:

1. Opening the case requires me to pry it open each time. The plastic case is designed where a stone sits right near the edge that you'd be pushing on to open the case. This prevents it from opening normally.

2. The built-in guide rods are supposed to slide in and out. I was unable to get most of them out by hand. I had to use pliers to break them free, then i had some luck. I ultimately had to slide them in and out a bunch of times to get them to "break in."

3. Now that the rods are loose enough to slide in and out, they're also loose enough to wobble up and down. This changes the angle on the stone, making getting a sharp edge almost impossible. When you go though the various stone grades, you need the angle to stay the same in order for the finer stones to do any good. Having a wobbly guide rod is a showstopper.

4. The honing oil bottle is made of Adamantium (Wolverine of X-MEN fame has a skeleton made of Adamantium, a nearly indestructible metal). Sure, it looks like clear plastic. It's the hardest to squeeze squeeze bottle i've ever used.

5. The clamp, while quite good, has one useless feature. The tip of the clamp has a cutout that can allegedly be used for clamping thin blades. It would work, if that cutout was flat. It's not. It's pretty well rounded and I have yet to find a technique that clamps a small blade in this cutout securely. I believe the clamp was a cast component, where this part should have been machined to be the needed shape. Looks like a bit too much cost-cutting was done on this part.

The above combined to make a "professional" kit that's hard to open, hard to use, and makes a terrible edge. I actually began to package this up to return it, but then realized the wobblyness of the rods was likely to blame for most of my disppointment with this product. So, here's what i did to fix most of the above issues and make this into a good kit:

1. Now that the rods are loose enough to slide in and out without having to take steroids, i fixed the wobblyness with a bit of superglue. I put some of the glue on the rods, then slid the rods in an inch or so. This forced the glue into the wobbly slots. I let the glue cure and then broke the rods free from the glue by twisting them with pliers. Once broken free, the rods still slide in and out nicely, but no more wobble! This alone made my second round of sharpening attempts very successful. I got some very scary sharp edges on my kitchen knives and my pocket knives.

2. I replaced the not-so-squeezable squeeze bottle with a softer one that also had a small dropper-style tip. This allows for easy dispensing of the honing oil.

Additional tips and comments:

1. I soaked all the stones thoroughly with oil. This used up about half the bottle of oil, but from now on, only a few drops are needed to keep them clean and happy during use. My new squeeze bottle makes this a pleasurable experience. Be sure to clean the stones by adding some oil, spreading it on the surface of the stone, then smacking down onto a paper towel. This will get the fine metal shavings out of the stone and prevent it from clogging up.

2. Make sure all the rods are at the same angle. This makes or breaks a successful sharpening session. With the wobbly rods i dealt with, the edge was awful. Once fixed, the edge was great.

Conclusion:

This kit had me so frustrated at first that i wanted to return it. The only reason i decided to try fixing it was my next step was to buy an Edge Pro Apex system. Considering that system is around $200, i really thought twice about having to spend that kind of money. Ultimately this product did deliver a good result, but not until i had to make some improvements. If you don't mind making some changes, you'll probably be happy with it. The larger stones and integral guide rods to me seem better than the Lansky system. The clamp offers finer angle selection, which i consider very useful as well. All this is unfortunately negated by some poor choices in some injection-molded plastic parts. I think Gatco cut a few too many corners when making this kit.

I have tried many different knife sharpening systems and this is the first one that actually works. I took our old dull kitchen knives (which were exspensive to begin with) and was able to put a razor sharp edge back on them. I thought I was going to have to buy new knives and this set saved me a bundle. It took three passes because they were really dull but it worked great. I was also able to put a new edge on my pocket and hunting knives on the first pass. I haven't tried it yet on serrated knives, but I have no doubt it will work.

With the "easy grip, clamp mount", it is convenient to use at a table. (For larger knives, attach to a short piece of shelving for a more stable base.)

The kit contains all of the stones necessary to take a kitchen knife to razor sharp. After the initial sharpening, only 2 stones are necessary to re-sharpen that edge.

I received my kit with one of the tabs broken in the box that holds the stones in place. The vendor (Picnic World) contacted me to see if everything was okay with my order. I replied about the broken tab and that I thought it was the factory's fault, not the vendor. The vendor contacted the factory and the factory supplied a replacement that the vendor forwarded to me. Great customer service on the part of the factory and the vendor!

If you have found frustration with sharpening with a traditional Arkansas whetstone, this kit takes the frustration out of knife sharpening. It also made me a hero with our kitchen knives, not just with my Boy Scouts. I recommend this product for your everyday knives.

I've had my Gatco five-stone kit for about six years now and believe it was the best addition I could have added to my outdoor tools. I liked it so much that I added the 15006 Extra-Fine (purple) stone and the ceramic 15010 Ultimate Finishing (light blue) ceramic hone for a mirror finish to my edges.

PROS:

* Takes the guesswork out of making sure you have a good, consistent edge.

* Ability to adjust edge sharpness with stone variety (Extra Course to Fine).

* Price/performance. You get a good variety of stones for the money.

* I guarantee it will take a very dull blade and make it razor sharp if you follow the directions.

* Easy to handle and safe grips protect your fingers from getting cut.

* Self-contained kit; everything fits neatly in the box (except for extra stones).

CONS:

* Getting smaller or larger blades to lock in to the guide clamp and be stable can be a challenge.

* If not properly clamped on to the blade, the clamp can leave small marks in the blade finish.

* Rods are set firmly in the plastic handles, but can be pulled out. (A minor issue that has rarely happened.)

* The oil container leaked in mine. Again, not a major issue, but now I no longer have an oil dispenser in the kit box.

* One stone came loose from the plastic handle. I re-cemented it in to the handle. All other stones have been firm.

So why did I give this five stars if there are several minor issues? Because I can't give it 4 1/2 stars and this kit really does simplify sharpening. Try to teach a young Scout or adult how to sharpen a knife on a whetstone and you will find most people can't get a consistent edge. There are tricks you can do to keep the blade edge at a consistent angle, but that is often a futile trial for ham-fisted people.

A key element in getting a secure clamp on the blade is to use the screw closest to the "ladder" to clamp down on the blade spine. The front screw adjusts to the proper width. You will also find that you don't need to apply a lot of pressure to make this work well. Even if you have knives with nicks in the edge, just take the Extra Course stone and gently caress the edge of the blade until the nick is almost gone, then work your way through the other stones to the Fine stone to finish the sharpening.

As with all things, it may take a little time to adjust and learn the device's nuances, but it's well worth it. I've also been around knives and sharpeners for about 40 years, ever since I was a young boy, and I no longer use any of my whetstones. I keep the stones clean and oiled, so I've had six great years of successful sharpening.

I originally bought two of them to replace the Good Cook 4.5" Utility Knives I had from several years ago and cannot find any more. Then I realized that these are a little bigger but still good for a paring knife and also as a Chef's knife. Seams are coming undone, things you would understand are normal wear and tear but you'd also expect it to last more than three months. Secondly; I've noticed this comment made, it doesn't come w/ a strap. Funny thing is it has a ring on each end of the bag for a strap to connect to? Third the quality isn't strong enough to withstand knives that are in fact sharp. The material itself is to fragile to place sharp knives into w/o having blade savers or a soft cover, which will dull the blade anyways.

This is a great bag though if you don't travel a lot w/ your knives. If your using this knife roll for storage than this would work fine, otherwise I'd recommend spending the extra money on something that will last.

We had to pull hard to close it and having had to do that all the time just ruined it even faster. 10 days after buying date, it was only good for wrapping the knives as a whole. What was not known, however, was that the stitching on the piece of nylon that holds the strap D-ring in place would come undone after a whopping two very mild uses. Not into the idea of refurbishing or repairing an item that's got all of 2 hours of use on it.

After using a cheap dollar store bread knife for years and being unable to slice a piece of garlic bread without ruining the entire loaf I decided it was time to purchase something a little more expensive. Gibson Anneville 9-Piece Hostess SetI don't host many dinner parties and I generally use an OXO and All-Clad cooking set when making food. I wanted something that had a few different pieces for serving that wouldn't break the bank. I really didn't care about quality that much...it isn't like you use this type of flatware all that much to begin with, and you use it for serving rather than eating.

Having bought four flatware sets that all stunk, I finally took the plunge and paid the $250 for Liberty's 45 piece American-forged flatware set. It is absolutely amazing quality and I expect it to last centuries...that's something I'll use every day and given the flatware you use for eating, it's something you interact for many times longer than what you serve the food with...I wanted something of exceptional quality to eat with and I got it...BUT, at the same time, I didn't feel a need to spend another $100 on multiple serving pieces that I'll rarely use. This was further because between the Liberty set and a few All-Clad pieces, I spent a small fortune the past month.

So when I ordered these, I was not expecting anything well-made...I mean, at 75 cents per item (and that price is DELIVERED), expectations should not be that this is something that competes with high-end American-forged flatware...it doesn't, but for it's purpose it is a great product. Still my emphasis here is that one should have a realistic expectation of what they are buying beforehand. I was surprised because these really exceeded my expectations. I'd place their quality close-but-slightly-lower than most of the JA Henckel and Oneida flatware products that are made in China. These look good, get the job done, clean up pretty easily, are very easy to restore a shine with a mild abrasive such as Nevr'Dull wading cloth, and are priced so cheap if they get messed up it's no worry at all. It's great for family dinners when you may have young children beating up the flatware...you know anything used to serve is going to get beaten up, and most people do not even notice what they are serving with.

The two biggest downsides are the ones you would expect with entry-level flatware...bending and staining. These do a good job resisting bending, but if you put a hella good of bit of force on these, they will bend. They are not going to be ideal for prying/makeshift cutting. Also, they have a stain resistance that is far lower than something like (true) 18-10 stainless...again, this is expected. They still do have good staining resistance, but these are NOT serving utensils you want to leave in a dishwasher for an extended period after they are clean, expose them to acidic fruits or very salty foods and not rinsing them off immediately after serving is complete, or leave sitting somewhere in which drying will be slow/humidity is 100%. The easy solution to this is to clean them promptly after usage and dry them after cleaning...do that and they will keep the high polish finish for a long time. If they do stain/pit, any mind abrasive will quickly take care of it. Worst case, if one piece bends or heavily pits, you're out of a whopping 75 cents.

These get the job done and if you are looking for an inexpensive serving set that looks good and will last for many years, I think you will be most satisfied given the dirt cheap price and good-quality product. When taking both price and quality in mind, I give these 5 stars hands down.

Started my party serveware / tableware / flatware collection and this is great. I got a good deal through the warehouse deals. The box was trashed but I didn't care. The serving utensils were in perfect condition. They are thin but it's fine for the casual parties that we have.

I have thoroughly enjoyed owning and using a this matching set of knives over the past few months. My prior set was simply a hodgepodge of marginal quality blades we've acquired since our marriage 20-odd years ago. I waited to review this set because I wasn't sure how they'd hold up after a few uses given the price, but I've been pleasantly surprised.

They don't hold an edge indefinitely, I've had to sharpen the blades I use most often a couple of times so far. I have used the included sharpener for the longer knives, but use my Furi for the smaller ones, and I prefer the edge it gives me.

This is a great set for someone in their first apartment, or a good inexpensive wedding gift that will be appreciated by a couple that isn't looking for something that is chef quality.

The knives feel good in your hand, and are relatively lightweight without feeling cheap. The scissors are also very nice and work smoothly.

I used both sets during the holidays and I have to say that the Chicago Cutlery set is a better value for the money. The blades are sharper, there are six more blades in the set and the block is better quality.

To give you a better idea of what you can expect I will breakdown the two sets. Please note, my review is for those consumers looking for a relatively inexpensive set of knives. Neither set is truly "professional quality"; the company's claims that they are should be taken with something less than a grain of salt. If you want/need that grade of knife you are going to pay quite a lot more for a single knife than you are paying for these two sets.

Design:

Ginsu All blades, with the exception of the santoku, are serrated and never need to be sharpened. This is supposed to prevent the tearing of food and eliminate the hassle of keeping the blades in good order. The blade handles are stainless steel and there is a black end piece with the Ginsu logo imbedded in it. The knives fit well in the hand, feel a bit light and are not especially sharp. (There is no comparison between the Ginsu bread knife and the Chicago cutlery one the Ginsu flattens fresh bread and tears the skin of tomatoes, the Chicago Cutlery knife glides through both. The santoku knife in this set is the exception it cuts very well but does need to be maintained. The knife set itself is pleasing to look at and would be a sharp addition to those kitchens with stainless steel appliances.

Chicago Cutlery The non-serrated knives have a tapered edge on the blade for optimal sharpness, they also have the typical hollow ovals seen on most santoku knives to help food release from the knife. The metal tang extends from the tip of the blade to the end and this strengthens the knife and also gives it balance in the hand. The scalloped edge blades have the full tang as well. Both styles have a triple rivet securing the handle to the tang. The handles are black plastic and are formed to fit the hand. The knives slice well, fit nicely in the hand and have a pleasing weight to them. The knife set will look appropriate in most kitchens.

As noted above, I would have no qualms about recommending the Chicago Cutlery set to the typical weekend warrior cook. It is a very good value for the money. *For purposes of this review I am putting these knives in the dishwasher and seeing how they hold up, so far, so good, if I note etching, water spotting or other undesirable effects I will update. (Side note: years of experience and advice have taught me to keep my sharps out of the dishwasher.)

I've had a set of the Chicago Cutlery metropolitans for 10+ years. That set is great. I purchased this set for a friend......wow......what a difference. These knives are no where near balanced, the blades are much thinner, the handles are two pieces of presumably hollow plastic riveted to the tang. Just the chef's knife from my set outweighs three of these cooking knives. I was embarrassed when she opened it, handed me one, and said......."These are nice, are you sure they are the same ones you have?" Well "Chicago Cutlery" and "metropolitan" are embossed on the blade. That's where the similarity ends. So much for trusting in a great product line over time. I am saddened by this. Amazon was great about it though, and took them back with no fuss.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Chicago Cutlery produces several lines of cutlery and Metropolitan is their budget line. I already knew this so I wasn't expecting fine knives, but these are surprisingly better that I would have thought.

Included in the set is a large, hardwood block, a honing steel, kitchen shears, eight 4.5" steak knives, a 2.75" peeler, a 3.5" parer, a 4.75" Partoku, a 5" boning knife, a 5.5" utility knife, a 6.75" Santoku, a 7.5" chef's knife, an 8" slicer, and a 9" bread knife. (The Partoku is Chicago Cutlery's name for this knife, which is a cross between a paring knife and a Santoku knife.)

The block is large, measuring 6 1/4"W x 12 1/2"H x 12 1/4"D, so it will take up some room on your counter. It's heavy and is one of the nicest components of this set.

The kitchen shears are exceptional! They are truly some of the best I've ever had.

The knives all feature a full tang meaning the blade runs all the way through the middle of the handle, which is attached with 3 rivets. The handles are nicely shaped and have good weight. The handles are a black, polymer material and are well finished.

The blades are stamped, high-carbon stainless steel. (Stamped knives are the most inexpensive to manufacture and unless the steel is of very high quality, they tend to dull quickly.) All of the blades are very lightweight. This may be a plus for folks who have trouble wielding a big, heavy knife. There are no bolsters on these knives, as bolsters are only on forged blades. (A bolster is a thick ridge at the end of the blade where it meets the handle. It is designed to prevent hand slippage and reduce hand fatigue.)

In my use of these knives, I find the steel to be a little soft and so the edge has a tendency to roll. I recommend using the included honing steel every time you use one of your knives. It only takes a couple of seconds and makes a huge difference in performance, especially with inexpensive knives. They arrive quite sharp and take an edge well. I suspect that they will need to be sharpened fairly regularly so I would purchase an AccuSharp Knife Sharpener With Replacement Blades to go with this set. I would also be careful not to put these knives in the dishwasher. The handles could probably take it fine, but the blades would likely suffer for it and might even develop some light rust spots due to the inexpensive materials used.

Chicago Cutlery also warrants their knives for life. It is a well-known brand that has been around for a long time so this warranty is likely to be upheld.

This set is sort of an entry level item, with some nice features. I would say it would be best for someone setting up a household for the first time or for someone outfitting a temporary living arrangement. These knives will not please someone who is used to high quality knives or who does a lot of chopping and cutting on a daily basis, but they are decent enough for starting out and they have a nice assortment.

I give this set 3 stars because the box and the product page claims professional quality knives, which is vague and misleading. If they advertised these knives as a budget or value package, I would enthusiastically give them a 4-star rating because it is quite a nice set if you know that these are not top-quality knives that will last you a lifetime.

I returned it because I thought I was getting something made in Europe. Now I know that for the real stuff, I'll have to pay about twice the cost. Is it worth it? You decide but if I'm going to be using it on my food, I want to be sure it's what it says it is and well made. This stuff, looks nice but the vendor isn't very confident otherwise they would have said "made in china".

While these are gorgeous in appearance (we purchased them as a wedding gift) they are not authentic Laguiole knives, rather a licensed product bearing the Laguiole name. We were disappointed as we have the authentic knives and love them largely because purs are hand made in the town Laguiole, France. Sadly, these are an imposter.

Sure, they're cheaper, but once I realized this, it made the thought of using them a dull experience. I'm returning these, will whet my appetite for the real thing, which will be more expensive, but give a decade of real satisfaction. It's worth it to pay a craftsman, I think.
