RSVP International Onion Goggles

RSVP International Onion Goggles, PinkWell, I used to look absolutely ridiculous, and now I look slightly less ridiculous. A la "Diva," an '80s French cult film with a guy who chopped onions wearing a mask and snorkel, I used to tromp into the kitchen with mine because my eyes bothered me so much when I'd chop onions. Enter the Onion Goggles! And yes, they really DO work. You do NOT have to have your nose covered, as I'd once believed. So far I've bought a pair for my son, myself, my brother, and a friend. The only downside is that they don't fit over eyeglasses, but since I'm not terribly farsighted this isn't a problem for me. If your eyes are sensitive to onion fumes, try these. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Some people have remarked that these onion goggles are a cheap rip-off. I recently received a pair of these from my wishlist as a birthday gift. The quality seems very good to me. I think that, perhaps, RSVP must have changed manufacturers for a while during 07 to 08, realized they were crap, and found a better manufacturer. I have not seen glasses from prior to 07 to be able to compare today's goggles with them, but I do know that the product I received is of a good quality.

The glasses are shaped like wrap-around sunglasses, curved to fit the shape of the face. Behind the frame that surrounds the lenses is a light foam material that creates a seal with your face. This foam has a layer of material (a little like a very thin black polyester flannel) that covers the part of the foam that touches your skin. This material makes the foam more comfortable, as well as strengthening the foam's edge--which without the support looks like it could easily tear. There are no ventilation holes cut into the foam.

Just like many wrap-around sunglasses, the fit of these onion-goggles is pretty snug. If you have a large head (like I do), don't expect to be wearing these for a long period of time (like for dry eyes.) While the fit is snug on me, (23" circumference head, size large hat) I find that I can wear them for at least a half an hour without discomfort--plenty of time to chop a lot of onions.

As the foam creates a seal between the nose and eyes, I did not have a problem with fogging. The foam seems porous enough that some circulation of humidity could occur. Interestingly, though, this did not seem to allow the onion fumes in.

The fumes. I could still smell the onions. The fumes still irritated my sinuses. But interestingly, the fumes did not affect my eyes. While I could feel a little burn in my nose, I had none of the tears (and consequently none of the runny nose) of cutting onions.

Fact: As long as they create a seal against your face, they work.

The glasses come in a soft plastic glasses case, which you can keep them in for storage. The case has a magnetic closure, which is nice when your hands are covered with meatloaf and you don't want to grab hard at the plastic to struggle with a snap.

Why did I give them only 4 stars? According to the Vision Council of America, 64% of adult Americans wear glasses. There is absolutely no way to fit a pair of glasses beneath these onion goggles. If you have a pair of contacts you can switch into--great! But good luck taking the contacts out after you've been cutting onions. It's clear that it would be difficult to create a good seal against onion fumes around a pair of glasses, but if ski-goggle manufacturers can do it, couldn't the onion goggle people? They could offer it as a separate product.

My prescription is around -2.0. I had no trouble cutting onions without my glasses on. But if your vision is worse, do a test drive at home, cutting onions without your glasses on, before you buy these.

I have not tested these goggles to see how easy they are to clean. I suspect soap and water and a gentle touch with a towel.

Last note: my cousin, who rides motorcycles, was at my birthday party. She commented that these looked almost exactly like motorcycle glasses. If you have ski goggles, motorcycle goggles, or a gas mask, give them a try. (Don't laugh--my dad was in the military and my mom used to use his old gas mask.)

These goggles really work.....I put them on then chop onions...no tears! And, they actually improve my vision a little, so I would highly recommend to people sensitive to onions.

These are worthless. Too narrow to fit my face. It's not flexible and does not conform to your shape of face. You really are better off buying a cheap pair of swimming googles or ski googles, I wish I had.

I haven't used these to cut onions. I actually bought them for my girlfriend to wear to Burning Man. These are great for the desert and far superior to regular sunglasses for keeping dust out of your eyes (although, they don't block the sun, if that's a concern).

They could fit just a bit more snugly, and i've seen larger ones elsewhere that probably provide better protection, but these are worth considering for Burning Man aficionados or, I suppose, people that cut a lot of onions.

Five stars if you're cutting onions at Burning Man.

Shun TDM0722 Premier Serrated Utility Knife, 6-1/2-Inch

Shun TDM0722 Premier Serrated Utility Knife, 6-1/2-InchBOTTOM LINE

Shun Premier Knives are made with the same technique as traditional samurai swords. After months of moderate use on the toughest items, my Shun Premier knives haven't dulled, chipped, scratched, or otherwise marred their initial perfect finish. I know what I want daily in the kitchen and by my side in the Zombie apocalypse. However, consider looking for a better price elsewhere.

SHARPNESS AND STRENGTH

As an example of their sharpness, I have used other Shun Premier knives for cutting through the toughest things, like pineapple. The outside of a pineapple is as hard as wood, and my Santoku does it with only gentle application of force no sawing required. After months of use on only the tough stuff (I use different knives for for different things), this knife still hasn't dulled noticeably. Notice, this knife is for different uses, but I mention the pineapple as an example of how sharp Shun knives are generally.

BEAUTY

This knife is a thing of beauty it has a beautiful wooden finish on the handle, and the knife has this pretty blotted ink look, referred to in the description as Damascus. I love to show off my knives to all of my friends.

SHARPENING

Shun allows you to sharpen their knives easily by sending it into a discounted, professional service center for professional sharpening and restoration. The price is cheap (25% off of $3 per inch of sharpening). Just google "Shun Sharpening."

I won't risk sharpening my knife at home because I don't know how to properly use a whetstone. I have a Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Sharp Duo Knife Sharpener for use on my cheaper knives, but the instructions on the Shun recommend you don't use that kind of sharpener, since this knife is sharpened to a different degree than European knives.

PRICE

Surprisingly, the price on Amazon is not the best price I've seen for the blade. You may want to check your local high-end home-goods or kitchen-goods store like Crate and Barrel. Still, I would consider ordering from Amazon, simply because shipping to my door is so convenient.

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

I'm so impressed with my Shun Premier Line's ability to cut through poultry, ligaments and all, that I'm already planning on how to adapt my knife for the zombie apocalypse. Considering these things are made like samurai swords, I'm confident I'll be more well-equipped than my regular knife wielding buddies when we're out of bullets and the zombies are inevitably bearing down upon us.

I've had my serrated shun knife for almost a year, and it's still as sharp as the day I took it out of it's cardboard sleeve. It's a beautiful knife, as well. As long as you hand wash and dry these knives they will last for decades...if not for generations. My favorite use of this particular knife is slicing tomatoes and onions. You can slice so thin, you can almost see through the slice. Amazing.

I've had expensive German knives for 30 years, but have decided to give them to my son and switch to a complete set of Shuns.

Buy Shun TDM0722 Premier Serrated Utility Knife, 6-1/2-Inch Now

Shun makes a quality product that is valued by the people who use knives for a living. My son loves these knives as the tools of his trade in the same way a mechanic would use a craftsman product or other hight quality tool. These knives are very expensive but worth every penny.

Alpha Stainless Steel Metal Handle 8 1/2 "Cleaver

Alpha Stainless Steel Metal Handle 8 1/2 'CleaverBig, heavy. I like it! Great price too. Gets right through the bone. Don't know why anyone would pay more for a cleaver.

This is a big knife. It is heavy and very sharp. I did not think it was this large from the picture. It took some getting use to it from my last cleaver, which I thought was big and heavy. This Alpha tops that last cleaver in the big and heavy category. I am not as fast with the Alpha on veggies, maybe with more practice. I have cut a whole chicken into pieces w/ bone-in and it worked fine. I would get the butcher to cut my ox tail. I don't cook with oxtail very often. If you want a sharp functional cleaver, this is good choice. It will scare those paring knife only people. Keep it away from the kids. I'm sure the Global or MAC is better, but why bother w/ the $$$.

Buy Alpha Stainless Steel Metal Handle 8 1/2 "Cleaver Now

This cleaver is fantastic. I bought it back in June and haven't sharpened it yet... it's still sharp enough to be painless on contact if one accidentally gets a body part in the way.

I use it to (primarily) cut up the whole chickens I buy from the Surprise Creek (Hutterite) Colony. I buy about 24 + chickens at a time and cut up approximately half that amount. I also use it to cut up whole turkeys (also purchased from the Colony) to debone them to make turkey burger.

This cleaver goes through the meat and the bone like a hot knife through butter.

Yeah, for some of the thicker bones I might have to whack a few times, or bang on the top of the cleaver with the heel of my palm to "help" it get through, but for the most part, it gets the job done in one swing.

I've also used it to cut up frozen beef, elk, and deer roasts, etc... Again, like buttah. Sliced through baby back pork ribs -no problem. :-)

I have not tried to cut up ox tail (as yet).

I think this is a fantastic cleaver for a really good buy (price is great). I'd take a pic of it to show how large it is compared to another recognizable item, but it's in the dishwasher being washed at the moment.

Yep. That's right. This sucker goes in the dishwasher, and the only thing I have to watch for is that it doesn't cut through the tines on the rack when I put it in (if I put it in upright instead of lying down).

I. LOVE. that it goes into the dishwasher. All stainless steel, handle included... bought it for this reason in addition to the chopping up stuff thing. I have a household of 6. The less stuff I need to wash by hand, the better.

The only mark down I can think of (and why the subtraction of 1 star) is that it doesn't come with some kind of slip cover or case for safe storage. I keep it propped upright next to my cutting blocks, but since it's *such* a sharp knife, I would rather it have something I can slip over the blade to keep myself and others from accidentally nicking oneself. I might move it to my magnetic knife strip. We'll see. I'll try to remember to take a pic and post it after the dishwasher is done.

To summarize: This is a good buy cleaver. It does what a cleaver is supposed to do, is dishwasher safe, and inexpensive. Recommend. :-)

ETA: I thought I'd uploaded the pics, didn't realize I hadn't. They're up now. :-)

Based on the two prior reviews I had hopes this was a decent item with good steel and no wooden handle that other cleaver reviews mentioned tended to be cheaply attached. Looked good when I got it--but upon first use (chopping oxtail into smaller pieces) the edge was pretty much a burred jagged mess. Since I don't believe an item like this should require getting out a grinder ever time it is used, I have to give this the lowest rating (I am hopeful it can be returned.)

Curious Chef Fruit & Vegetable Peeler

Curious Chef Fruit & Vegetable PeelerThis peeler only works properly if you peel towards yourself. And you have to exert a fair amount of force for it to work. So my son peeled the skin off his knuckle on first use...we'll stick with our adult peeler for him.

I bought this for my daughter as she loves to help in the kitchen. She received it in her stocking last year. At five years old this is still to cumbersome for her to handle, she prefers to use my zester to peel everything, and this gets put back in the drawer everytime. Its a wonderful idea, but I think this would be better for an older child with larger hands.

My granddaughter really likes the peeler and she uses it with the curious chef knife that I also ordered. She can now peel her own fruit and veggies.

Kuhn-Rikon Kulu Herb and Vegetable Knife

Kuhn-Rikon Kulu Herb and Vegetable KnifeBecause I love my first Kuhn-Rikon Kulu Vegetable Knife so much, I ordered this one as a gift for my daughter. This knife is very versatile I especially like it for cutting salad vegetables. I frequently use bagged salads, so I just dump the bag's contents into a big bowl, and then rock my blade through the lettuce and stuff a few times. Voila bite-size pieces! The blade, which is super sharp, is very easy to clean. Some reviewers found the curved tool difficult to use, but I think it's quite easy. My arthritic fingers can easily and painlessly use this wonderful knife. With this, an onion slices perfectly, and my eyes don't tear because I don't saw back and forth releasing onion fumes into the air. I also use it to trim and slice meats for wok-cooking. It is a great invention and the low price is a pleasant surprise.

Camco 43753 RV Stoveaway Topper Cutting Board

Camco 43753 RV Stoveaway Topper Cutting BoardI purchsed this for my camper and it's great. I removed our old stove cover, which was metal, and now we just use this. It looks very nice, functions well as a cutting board, and adds needed counter space. With the non-slip surface on the bottom of the board, it doesn't move a bit while we're traveling. I need to put some of that stuff on my two boys. It would make traveling much more enjoyable. Great product, great price.

This thing is exactly as advertised. Has a rubber non slip mat for the back. We leave it on the stove even when traveling. It doesn't go anywhere. The only problem is my wife won't let me cut on it because it looks too nice : )

Works and looks great. I love being able to cover the stove with the usefulness of a cutting board, creating extra counter space. For those in dry climates, season wooden cutting boards with mineral oil.

Want Camco 43753 RV Stoveaway Topper Cutting Board Discount?

Be aware this is a regular cutting board, cut perfectly to size, has a drip guard, with a full sized piece of waffle-type, beige, non-slip rubber material on the bottom, and comes with a free thin plastic cutting mat that you can really use for cutting on. Our new wood board needed some light sanding and oil, and, it is so nice looking it will probably be only used for counter space, not for cutting on. It can be cut on but the free mat will be fine. It fits perfectly and has some weight to it and it does not move during travel on curvey or bumpy roads. Great price, fast ship, protected well, and it is a great counter space increaser, and silencer of the metal stove-top cover 'rattle', which we notice in a motor-home. You do not really need a folding metal stove top cover, and most RV's are short on kitchen counter space. This is the perfect solution with a bonus. I think they include the plastic cutting mat knowing the board will not be used. Get this if you have an RV with this sized stove-top. I do not know anything about the Silent Stove Top Cutting board, except the photos show no drip guard. This is less expensive and I cannot imagine anything working, or looking, better than this. Highly recommend! You do not install this. Simply remove the metal cover (quick and simple) and set this on the burner grate, and that's it. My sanding and oil is just what one should do to a nice piece of wood. Use mineral oil, or cutting board oil, on both sides and all edges and do not let the board dry-out or be subjected to very high or low temperatures. I added more counter space at the end of a counter by ordering two 8"x8" brown hinges and a very nice looking 3/4" teak cutting-board from Amazon. Fast 2-day ship and free return with Amazon Prime.

Jokari 229499 Butter Pro

Jokari 229499 Butter ProI use this to portion peanut butter, as it's a 1 tablespoon measure far too much for a serving of butter, but just right for a peanut butter sandwich. The flexible bowl makes it easy to remove the peanut butter from the spoon, and the other end works well for spreading on bread.

I would like a 1 teaspoon version for butter, as that's what I purchased it for originally. The flexible bowl is perfect for soft spreads, but the size is problematic!

I have bought several of the Jokari healthy choices portion control tools and like them all. I like this one especially because it is so easy to use. The other person reviewing says that a tablespoon is too much for a serving of butter but that's portion for the plan I'm on so it works great for me! I was a little worried if the soft butter would come out of the scoop it does with no problem.

NEW, 18 1/4 Inch Long Wall-Mount Magnetic Knife Holder, Wall-Mount Tool Holder, Magnetic Knife Strip, w/Five Hanging HooksThis magnetic knife holder is: easy to install, convenient, sturdy, space saving, nice to look at.

This item is awesome! It freed up so much space on my counter that I love to be in my kitchen now. The hooks swivel out of the way so if you don't need them, you do not have to use them. My knives are visible and I can easily pick the one I want and not search for which slot the knife is in. Unfortunately, the directions were missing (?) and I had to determine which drill bit (1/4in) would be best so I guessed at the size before I made the holes in my wall. I guessed well and it installed easily. My husband was thrilled with it once I got it up and our tiny kitchen has more space than ever before. I highly recommend this product!

I actually did not put in the hooks on this strip (I have the 24" holder as well, and am using the hooks on that one) because I just wanted this for my knives and the handles would have blocked access to the hooks. This is currently holding a chef's knife, santoku, small chef's knife, small santoku, sandwich/utility knife, paring knife, carving knife, tomato knife, slicer, and bread knife with no difficulty at all. I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants to store their knives on the wall rather than having them clutter up their drawers.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 2-Piece Promotional Paring Set

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 2-Piece Promotional Paring SetI bought these little paring knives because we always seem to be short of these little work-horses. The funny little curved bladed one looked to be possibly not that useful, but turned out to be the best knife we have and use. The curved thin tip is just perfect for coring apples and such. I always buy brand-name (read "expensive") cutlery because cheap knives are hard to use, don't hold an edge, and can be down-right dangerous. All of my knives are made by Henckels and I wouldn't use any other. You definitely get what you pay for and since my kitchen tools are used a lot and are going to be around a long time, I only buy the best. And these little knives are the best.

Barenthal, Laguiole, 6 piece steak knife set in wooden drawer tray, Black/Stainless.

Barenthal, Laguiole, 6 piece steak knife set in wooden drawer tray, Black/Stainless.The Amazon description says "Every piece of Barenthal Laguiole is exclusively handcrafted in the Alsace region of France using time tested methods and the unique savior faire of old world artisans."

The label on the box says "Made in France, assembled in China". Look closely at the photos, this is extremely poor quality cutlery at a vastly inflated price. Cheap plastic handles, poorly stamped bolsters. Yet the blade says France. Apparently Barenthal was fined $10,000 euros in 2005 for fraudulently labeling knives made in China as Made in France, but they don't seem to have learned their lesson.

Read some of the other reviews, these knives are being passed off as other manufacturer's products as well.

From my understanding in the name Barenthal, Laguiole, are two places in France and is not something that could be a trademark or is a trademark on something. I guess it would be similar to the name Champagne, France. Anyone in the world can make the knives would I guess.

I bought mine from the, "you might be getting something broken department" or as Amazon calls it warehouse deals. The price was okay in W.D. and it was packaged and sent to me broken, one bee missing so I have a good five-piece setting. I get the sixth one if I ever set them out for a six-piece setting. As I write this there, are two reviews both having some truth to them? They're not inferior knives when comparing to their class of cutlery, but they're not the real deal either. They would cost five times as much for the handmade French Laguiole knife; it is an artwork in cutlery. I guess my point is if you've ever had a glass of California champagne and enjoyed it and drove to the store to buy it in a vehicle that was replicated from some one else's design then enjoy the knives if the words assembled in china is not a deal breaker for you and yours.

I humbly have some plastic handled punched out picnic cutlery from Italy that I use more than any other table knife in the kitchen until this recent purchase. I'm okay with it.

International Fine Edge Pro 9" Steel

International Fine Edge Pro 9' SteelMuch nicer then some costing more and better than those found at the local discount stores. After 6 months of using multiple times a week it is still doing what it is suppose to do. I would buy again

BOTTOM LINE:

It works, is a good length, and feels like a quality instrument. It only gets 4 stars, because the handle on the one I received is different than the one that is pictured and looks like a cheaper plastic.

HANDLE:

First off, the handle in the picture looks like it is wood with metal around the hilt. This is not what I received, and I didn't notice until just now (a month later) as I sit down to write the review. The handle that I received is all black and all plastic it looks just like the OXO Good Grips Professional Sharpening Steel, but it says "J.A. Henckels International" on it with the single Henckels man logo. Nonetheless, it is quite sturdy, has good weight and balance, and it feels like it is full tang. The grip is not slippery in any way, so I have no concerns with it when I am using it to hone my knives.

HILT:

I just want to quickly point out that the hilt flares out just enough to protect your hand, which is nice, since it might just save you from cutting yourself when you are honing fast (it definitely saved me once).

HONING QUALITY:

I trust the Henckels brand. Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of experience with other sharpening tools (or honing steel), so I cannot say how this stacks up. In my opinion, this does what I want it to do smoothing out the edges of my blades before and after I use them, and also after I sharpen them just to make things nice and neat. I am still working on my technique for honing the inside of the blade I get a much cleaner swipe on the outside of the blade.

LENGTH:

Lastly, the 9" length on this tool is good, especially for the value, but it is not great. It is fine for my 8" or 9" knives, but I can see how a longer sharpening steel would be better, since you can use the full length of the steel for honing without getting close to the hilt (or your hand). This is especially the case with longer knives (like my 12 inch Sekiryu Yanagiba Sashimi Knife 300mm).

Wusthof Classic 4110 Serrated Utility Knife (Sausage knife ) 14 cm 5"

Wusthof Classic 4110 Serrated Utility Knife 14 cm 5'In Europe, this knife is called the "sausage" or "brunch" knife. Since Americans don't usually cut baguettes or weisswurst as part of making lunch, however, Amazon has chosen to call this what it is the serrated utility knife.

Name notwithstanding, the edge on this knife is the same as the one on the Wusthof tomato and bread knives, and the knife does in fact do splendidly on tomatoes (which aren't too terribly different from sausage) and crusty bread (as long as it is skinny french bread get an 8-inch knife for the hefty american stuff).

Where this knife truly excels, however, is cutting citrus. The blade is long enough to handle grapefruit, and the scalloped edge will cut even kumquats and key limes without crushing the pulp.

So, I would have called this the citrus knife (or, maybe, the "soft things with a hard skin" knife). While mine doesn't get used as often as the paring or chef's knife, it's among our kitchen's top-five.

I'd like to disagree with the "may be overkill" review. I think this knife is a fantastic addition to any kitchen, especially for a college student who can't afford a wide range of equipment. The great thing about this knife is its versatility: it's perfectly sized and can take on any number of jobs, from tomatoes to meats to bread. I only have three knives (this one, the 5" non-serrated utility, and the 8" chef's knife), and even with all the cooking I do (e.g. thanksgiving for 10), I've never needed anything more than those three essentials. Sure, you may not use the serrated utility knife as often as a chef's knife or paring knife, but you will get a great deal of use out of it. A serrated knife is indespensable, and this one is certainly well worth the investment.

Although a little pricey for a utility knife, this knife is a perfect addition to a starter set (I have the set #8832, includes chefs, bread, sandwich, parer, stick and shears). It cuts tomatoes and bagels like butter. It is one that you will reach for for those jobs that require delicate cutting (such as sausage without tearing the skin) without having to go for the more substantial knives.

Strongly recommend as addition to a set which doesn't have this knife.

This is one of the best knives we own. Great for slicing fruit, veggies, and meat in small or medium projects. Very sharp and the pointed end gets used often to pierce fruit for slicing. Still love my Henkel chef's knives 6" and 8" for chopping, but this is a good companion.

This is one of my kitchen workhorses. Gets almost as much use as my chef's knife and paring knife. I use this for tomatoes, sandwiches, rolls, bagels, slicing oranges, etc. Performs perfectly. It's very sharp and well made. You really only need 3 to 5 knives, even for the most well-equiped kitchen, and in my kitchen this is one of my 5.
