Shun Ken Onion 2-Piece Carving Set

Shun Ken Onion 2-Piece Carving SetI recieved this carving set for my birthday and was VERY pleased with how well it cuts. No real effort is necessary. The quality is amazing. The look is very nice. Would recommend to anyone who wants a carving set.

I am a professional Chef with 36 years experience and have always loved my Henckels. My knives are my tools.

I bought this set as a wedding gift for my nephew. When I unboxed the knife (to put a penny in the box for good luck) I took the knife out of the box and was very impressed with the balance, grip and edge. It is not stamped. It is not part of a starter set. It is not for peeling carrots.

I was so impressed, that I promptly ordered one for myself and retired my 10 year old Henckels carver. I did a prime rib at home last week and could not believe how well this knife carved. I was able to do English cuts like I was cutting butter.

I did a side by side with my Henckels that was just back from being professionally sharpened. The Henckels was Triple A and the Shun was MAJOR LEAGUE. If you have the nerve to step up with the big boys, this is a real knife. It will last a lifetime. Really.

I'm sold. My next knife will be another Shun.

Catskill Craftsmen 14-1/2-Inch Poly Cutting Board Paddle with Groove

Catskill Craftsmen 14-1/2-Inch Poly Cutting Board Paddle with GrooveThe 14 1/2 inch length includes the handle, which leaves a very small cutting area. The juice groove is also quite shallow, and overflowed easily with the juices from 2 hamburgers. When we took it out of the dishwasher, it had warped. Still usable, but not the product that I had expected (and needed).

Rogers 40-Piece Rose Elegance Flatware

Rogers 40-Piece Rose Elegance FlatwareThis posting follows my earlier review of a different 18/0 flatware set. I found the Rose Elegance pattern quite detailed (more so than is revealed by the photo posted with this listing) and attractive, although there were trade-offs made to achieve the relatively low price point, see below.

The most common specification for stainless steel flatware is 18/10. The 18 refers to the chromium content and the 10 to the nickel content. Although not listed in the "technical details" at the time of this review, Rogers Co. Rose Elegance sets are manufactured using 18/0 stainless steel to keep costs down. However, 18/0 stainless steel has 0% nickel content, and consequently is less resistant to pitting and corrosion.

18/0 stainless steel is known as ferritic steel as it, like pure iron, is magnetically attracted (a quick test for less expensive stainless). This is opposed to 18/10, which is called austenitic stainless steel and is not, or only weakly, magnetically attracted. For practical purposes chromium/nickel, 18/10 and 18/8, steels are essentially identical. Because of its superior properties, over 2/3rds of all stainless steel produced is austenitic.

The greater the nickel composition the better the protection against pitting and corrosion, but the higher the cost. This is one of the reasons prices for flatware vary so significantly. Also note that 18/0 flatware is often finished to a lower standard than higher nickel content stainless steel to further reduce manufacturing costs. Even on a quite cursory examination, my 18/0 flatware does not look quite as good as my higher quality stainless steel flatware. However, unless you need that extra increment of appearance obtained with 18/10 stainless, this set will serve well for every day use.

good quality .i really expected for this set to be very thin and easy to bend. but they were great very thick and durable.shipping was good.the family member i bought for ,loved them..

Excellent tablewear. It stays bright and makes a nice presentation for those non-formal but has to be nice occasions. I am very pleased with the Rogers purchase. My mother use to tell me that "Rogers is very dependable" ... I never forget it.

This flatware is almost identical to the one I have (made by someone else, couldn't find the pattern anymore). The pieces have a good weight to them not too heavy, not too light, and look great.

It's an okay set of flatware. It's very flat, and feels a little cheap next to nicer made pieces, but this is good enough for everyday use. I really bought it because I needed more teaspoons. for some reason i've lost a bunch of teaspoons. it works fine for stirring my coffee.

Hampton Forge Tomodachi 6-Inch All Purpose Kitchen Knife, Orange

Hampton Forge Tomodachi 6-Inch All Purpose Kitchen Knife, OrangeI've uploaded the correct picture... picked this up for my Mother as a gift along with the 8" bread knife.

Decent drawer knife, since it has its own sheath... 30 yr warranty... diswasher safe.. cheap.

What else more is there to say at this price :)

I originally got this knife when my roommate at my old apartment had one.

I actually got it as a gift for my boyfriend, because he just kept raving about how great it is! It's easily washable, sturdy, very sharp and cuts through just about anything. It's small enough to be less-weildly but large enough to cut through most things you need to cut through (meat, fruit, etc.) For the price especially (my roommate said she got it especially in a certain state, Ha!) I think it's a grade-A all-purpose knife.

Mundial 5100 Series 3 1/2-Inch Paring Knife, Black

Mundial 5100 Series 3 1/2-Inch Paring Knife, BlackThis is my husband's absolute favorite knife. It's very sharp, fits in his hand just right, and he uses it for almost everything from paring fruit to cutting cheeses.

I like it too, when I get a chance to use it! Oh, and I'm the one who always sharpens it. I use a Henkels hand knife sharpener every 7 days or so.

This knife is so sharp I'm afraid of it. It works super and I highly recommend this brand for anyone who likes a good knife. They are worth the money. I have several different Mundial 5100 series knives now, and I love them all. They do not recommend that you put them in the dishwasher, but I sometimes do with no problem so far. I think maybe the handles will discolor after a while, but the knife should still be fine.

Buy Mundial 5100 Series 3 1/2-Inch Paring Knife, Black Now

I bought this knife with a full set of Mundail's (Brazilian steel).

The paring knife is the hardest to keep sharp with a steel, needs frequent stone grinding resharpening, and doesn't keep an edge well.

Spend the extra money and buy a Wustoff for the paring knife for your knife assortment. I give my other Mundail knives four stars (I like the fatter handles than the Wustoffs), but at this size for some reason the forging is not well executed and the edge just won't keep. It works, but is frustrating, so I'd recommend avoiding it.

I have just started building my knife assortment having graduated from a stamped steel set with molded handles. The Mundial 3.5 inch parer is very well balanced and comfortable to work with. My primary usage has been paring fruit and I would highly recommend it.

Totally Bamboo Drawer Organizer

Totally Bamboo Drawer Organizer, 6-Inch by 15-InchI have a non-matching set of salt & pepper grinders that I got sick of taking to the table when we eat and then putting away so they're out of sight. Plus they leave a little bit of salt & pepper behind every time we use them. I measured my grinders and found this product on Amazon (the 3x9 version). Both grinders fit great (see images) with room left over for various hot sauce bottles. Keeps the stuff organized, neat (it catches the excess salt & pepper) and makes it easy to transport everything to the table in one fell swoop. I like the quality, the look and the functionality so much that I bought another one in a different size.

This is a very nice bamboo drawer organizer. The quality is good. No funky odors, very attractive wood, and nicely finished corners (rounded and smooth). Actually a bit better than I expected at this price. I got the 6x15 size to hold some larger utensils and it works very well. I would definitely consider buying some of the other sizes now that I have seen the quality.

I'm using mine in a drawer, but it's nice enough that you could use on a desk or table as well.

There was packing material around it, but the glue that binds it together didn't hold up. Had to return it.

Compared to other bamboo products offered by Amazon, these drawer organizers pale in comparison. They are quite thin and feel like balsa wood, instead of bamboo. Mine were just in a box without any packing material and I am thankful that they did not arrive broken. If you put them in a drawer and are careful with them, they might do well, but they are quite fragile and I am worried about handling them as dropping them on the floor might cause them to break in pieces. Not worth the cost.

I have had several for years and have never had to sharpen one of them, We use them daily. All that is needs is to run them over a steel 2 or 3 times a year.

They are very sharp and don't need constant sharpening. We have the Chef size and needed something smaller for paring and cutting fruit and smaller food items. This fit the bill perfectly and find that we are using this sometimes more often then the larger Chef size (8 inches) because its size. Definitely recommend if you are serious about slicing and dicing in the kitchen. I had a chef ask me if I cooked much when he saw my Mac knife in the kitchen!

OXO Good Grips Corn Holders

OXO Good Grips Corn HoldersThese are strong, sturdy corn grips that are durable and extremely comfortable to hold. The two steel prongs grip the corn firmly and do not slip or slide while in use. The holders are comfortable to hold no matter how hard you grip them and are suitable for use by the smallest hands, as well as the largest ones. They wash well and look new, no matter how many times one uses them. These corn grips are a very good value for the price.

Okay, if there's one thing we know in this area besides great pizza, its corn. I KNOW that corn grips aren't on most people's top priority list for kitchen gadgets, but if you're gonna buy 'em, buy the best! Ever dropped your cob because of all that delicious butter all over your hands? Add a couple of Good Grips handles to it, and problem solved! One hint those prongs are REALLY sharp. Stick them in a measuring cup or something to store. Once you stick your hand in your gadget drawer and get jabbed by one of those things, you'll never want it to happen again! Enjoy that corn!

To my knowledge, there are two sets of Oxo corn holders -the regular "Good Grips" and the "Steel" lines. The ones I ordered from this page and received from Amazon were the "Good Grips" and they are black and yellow, like a large bumblebee(28381), the photo here is old. The "Steel" ones are black and stainless steel and cost almost twice as much(1050061). They both are great... large and sturdy and I'm satisfied with my Bumble Bees for $6.00. Good product just be aware there are 2 sets and Amazon's set up is a bit confusing. By the way, I store them in a used wine cork in the drawer as they are indeed sharp.

I've always found that Oxo brand products for the kitchen are top notch, and these corn holders are no exception. I was surprised to see that they are even heftier than I'd expected. The size ensures it's easy for anyone to hold whether that be children, men with large hands, or even people who suffer from arthritis or other hand problems. And the rubber gripping makes hanging onto the holders easy even with buttery fingers. One of the more ingenious parts is the length of the prongs; Oxo had the common sense to make one prong longer than the other to ensure that both prongs come in contact with the peaked shape of the ear of corn. I highly recommend these!

J A Henckels Gwp Twinsharp Knife Sharpener

J A Henckels Gwp Twinsharp Knife SharpenerSharpener performs as advertised. This is my second sharpener; for my daughter. I am very happy with the sharpener. About 10 passes on 1 and a few on 2 sharpens a dull knife. A few passes on 2 every three times of use keeps the blade sharp.

Bambu Bread Knife

Bambu Bread KnifeThis is such a great knife. I use it to cut bread and the serrations cut straight through the tough crusts without squashing the bread. Very easy to handle. I particularly like the straight-line profile of the knife (it was hard to find one that didn't have a curved blade).

MAC brand Santoku Knife w/Bolster (#MSK65)

MAC brand Santoku Knife w/BolsterI am a professional cook and I LOVE this knifebut also, I can see why this knife might give some people problems. I love its extreme agilityit has a wonderful, lively action which is highly suited to very fast yet precise cutting. It is incredibly sharp, and the granton edge performs well. It is everything a santoku should be. I used a Shun for a long time until I realised that it was just too thick to produce the kind of precision cuts I needed to make.

And this is where the problem liesits blade is VERY thin, and it needs to be handled with care. I baby mineI am ultra-careful about what I use it on, and when it's not in use it stays in a KnifeSafe blade cover. I have two ceramic rods and four different Japanese waterstones I use to keep it sharp. It's not an "all purpose" knife in any way, and I would not recommend it to anyone who is needing such a knife. And this includes professionals and home cooks alike.....anyone who is unable or unwilling to handle it with care. For more general use, I would recommend the Shun santoku with the granton edgeit is a thick, beefy knife that works well for most things. Or, for a more budget-friendly choice, try the Kai Wasabi santokuit's an excellent, inexpensive workhorse.

My wife wanted a Santoku knife and after some research, decided on the MAC Santoku knife. Well balanced, light weight (compared to our Henckels series set), and so VERY sharp. It feels like I am using a razor. Slicing through tomatos, chicken, fruits, and the like are EFFORTLESS.

Using my older knives in the house feels awkward and clumsy compared to the Santoku. This knife is highly recommended since it feels great in my hands and does the cutting with minimal effort!

Buy MAC brand Santoku Knife w/Bolster (#MSK65) Now

I got my first MAC knives back in the 70s, thin metal blades with a hole in the tip so they could be hung up on a peg. Those knives kept their razor edge with only an occasional drag along some unglazed pottery for about 10 years, and I'm talking about 10 years of hard use in a vegetarian kitchen.

After that, they needed to be professionally sharpened or sharpened on a home electric sharpener with a diamond wheel. I've done this twice in 30 years.

I've since upgraded the original to this one, the Santoku with a granton edge. I can't praise it highly enough. The razor sharp edge glides through everything effortlessly, the balance is perfect for me and the construction is as sturdy as you'd ever want.

Compared to any other knife in this price class, this is the brand to inspect. I have tried many knives, cheaper and more expensive alike. this brand is priced in a range where we expect to find quality knives. I believe that MAC knives are no nonsense, well made top quality knives that outshine its peers in its price range.

MSK-65 is very sharp, superbly balanced. And feels great. It cuts and slices where other knives pull and wedge. The hollow spots release food, even the super thin sliced stuff.

Great comfort. I am big man with large hands and do NOT like the knive handles with "ends." I find it compromises my grip. I don't want a knife maker to tell me where my fingers go. This knife is good with my hands.

Very strong. but thinner and lighter than many of its competitors. I trust this knife to last a very very long time. And it has the japanese edge, which is sharpened at a more acute angle than the standard German/American knife. This is similar to the Shun knivesvery hard steel, very thin sharp edge. But it is not damascus, so it's significantly cheaper.

When it comes to cutting vegetables this knife it the best I have ever used. I love it! Just be careful how you store this knife so you don't damage the edge

Shun Premier Chef's Knife

Shun Premier Chef's Knife, 8-InchA little background. I've cooked professionally for the vast majority of my adult life.. so roughly 20 years now. A bit of a late bloomer, I'm just now going to culinary school at the age of 36. That said, I've been around the block a couple times and I know a quality product when I see one.

This knife is a bad ass. You know that guy that seems cool, but has that weird look in his eye and you're fairly sure he could end you if he really wanted to? Yeah, that's this knife. Compared to the knives that are provided by the vast majority of restaurants, well its like putting Butter Bean versus Jon "Bones" Jones. I've put this knife through its paces and here are my observations. Take it as you will.

Pros:

(1)Beautiful. I get alot of "Ooohs" and "Aaahs" from people who haven't seen it before. "Oh my God" is a common phrase by people who hold it, and "Holy s*** I want one" is common by those who take a couple swipes with it.

(2)Sharp. Out of the box you can cut ripe tomatoes, apples, onions, etc extremely thin very, very easily. Thin enough that light passes through it. Can you shave arm hair with it? No. You cannot. You'll need to sharpen it yourself or have it sharpened professionally for that. Nevertheless its night and day what this knife can do when compared to your average professional kitchen knife.

(3)Comfortable. I've tried quite a few different lines from quite a few different knife companies and this knife ranks right up there in the top for me. I'm 6'2" 255 lbs, mediumish hands and I have plenty of room on this handle. Fits very well to my hand and is easy to maneuver. I didn't think I would like this rounded handle as much as I do the "D" shape of the Shun Classics, but I find I prefer the Premier weight/handle.

(4)Weight. I've used German-style knives pretty much my entire career and I was fairly certain I would hate this knife simply because it doesn't have the heft that a German brings to the table. I was wrong. I hate to admit it, but I was. The blade is so thin and so sharp that heft becomes nothing more than an unnecessary entity under most circumstances. Not only is the heft unnecessary in most cases, but this blade allows extremely precise cuts. On a lark, I wanted to see what it would do versus a plastic 3 1/2 oz souffle cup. It went all the way through it in a single pass without even the slightest crinkle in the cup. Quite literally hot knife through butter. Cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, etc are a freaking joke. Quite literally effortless.

(5)Durability. I'm putting this as a pro mostly because the steel holds an edge decently well under normal usage. Cutting vegetables, breads, deboned meats etc this knife will make you giggle with glee. It is not however designed for bones or for being a can opener. It is a precision tool. If you want something that will smash through product then you are probably looking for a higher end Henckel, Wustof or F.Dick knife. With a simple daily honing after use the blade will hold a close-to-factory edge. Sharp enough to shred paper, but not quite as sharp as when you pulled it out of the box (obviously).

Cons:

(1)Price. If you're like most cooks, buying a knife at this price point is an investment. Its beautiful and performs extremely well, but you're always nervous its going to get dropped or misused by some idiot on the line that has no qualms about using items that aren't his/hers when you're not looking. Or it magically walking off. There are some pretty respectable SETS of knives that can be had for the price of this single knife.

(2)Blade height. Honestly, most of the time the blade will simply slice through things making this con inconsequential, but there are times where it is necessary to use the heel to cut through something and in this circumstance the blade isn't tall enough to accomplish the task without you smashing your knuckles into the product. There are only really one or two items in my current menu where this happens, but it absolutely makes me cringe when it does.

(3)Debris. While the handle is beautiful and very comfortable to the hand, it tends to collect pretty much anything it comes in contact with. The blade isn't much better. The "hammered" texture doesn't seem to have as much impact as one would think.

To say that I'm not in love with this knife would be a complete lie. It is easily the best knife I have ever owned and I would recommend the knife whole-heartedly. That said, the price point that this knife can be had at will make the vast majority of professional cooks cringe simply because of the environment that it is expected to survive in. Even as I write this review I am seriously considering buying a cheaper set that hopefully performs pretty close simply because the idea of this knife getting ruined makes my fists clench. Also, don't let water or acidic products sit on the blade for extended periods of time. Its kind of a no-brainer, but when you get used to abusing house knives, seeing the discoloration on this knife can make you a sad panda even though it wipes off pretty easy if caught in time.

UPDATE January 20, 2013: I've been using this knife for almost a year now. I have since purchased several other chef knives, including a $240 gyuto made with CPM-154 steel. I still keep coming back to my Shun. It is my go to knife for 90% of the stuff I do in the kitchen. I still have not experienced any of the chipping that some reviewers were complaining about, so it makes me assume they are mistreating this knife. For me, the Premier is the perfect balance of weight, utility, and beauty at a very competitive price. The blade is rigid(no flex) and while noticeably heavier than most gyutos and lasers, it is also noticeably lighter than German-style French knives. The VG-10 is about as good a steel as you're going to find at this price point. Good edge retention, but not superb. One of the best investments I have ever made.

UPDATE March 21, 2013: I figured I should mention my absolute favorite trait about this knife, and that is the finish and the geometry of the blade create a surface with virtually no drag. The combination create a performance trait that I have yet been able to replicate with another knife. It is particularly evident when doing your horizontal cuts for dicing an onion. With the grinds on other knives (Henckel/Miyabi products especially) they seem to create alot of drag and you almost have to rip the knife through the cut. The Premier is nearly effortless and it has caught some experienced cooks by surprise who had their hand on the back of the onion instead of on top where it belongs. Caution is warranted while you get used to this knife's characteristics.

I am a pro chef at a large hotel in downtown Seattle. I use my knife for at least half of my day (3 to 4 hours), 5 days a week. I own both Japanese and German knives, all the best and most well known. I purchased a Shun classic 8 inch and was blown away at the quality and overall ballance of the knife. I decided to upgrade to the Premier...Wow, wow, wow!!! This knife is the best knife I have ever owned and I cant remember someone else I worked with having anything close to mine. Its like a scalpel or an exacto knife sharp...scary even for me and I do this stuff all day, Im trained. I must admit, I have cut myself twice already, because all the blade has to do is make contact with skin and it cuts...I know, im a wimp... Should you buy this? If your serious about culinary arts this knife is no joke. Not to mention, your gonna have a piece art on your cutting board, its a beautiful and worthy example of a real pro knife...I highly recomend. This knife should be kept far away from novices. I almost forgot to mention, it comes with a kick a** blade shield. Love Shun knives!!!

Buy Shun Premier Chef's Knife Now

I'll start by saying I love this knife and am an avid Shun user.

It took 3 tries, however, to get a knife that wasn't defective hence the 4 stars! Not Amazon's fault but the first knife sent to me had two deep scratches in the steel on the bolster. Not ok for a knife of this price! The second knife had a large chip in the handle and a crack in the blade. These things are not typical of Shun, and I hope they aren't typical of this series.

The blade on this thing is as sharp as they come, as with all Shuns. The 16 degree angle is much different from the German and American knives and very sharp! It makes cutting a breeze and this will surely become my new go-to knife in the kitchen. I'm looking forward to building up the whole set of this line over time.

I bought this at Sur La Table because I wanted to hold it before I bought it. This is by far the best knife I have. It cuts like butter. I no longer have to put much force into my cutting motion which has now greatly reduced my chances of slipping and cutting myself. The handle is large, more befitting a man's grip, but I do find it comfortable. The most important thing to know about a knife is that how it fits your hand lets you know how good the knife is. What is comfortable for me may be unmanageable to you (and vise-versa), so please be careful in choosing a knife for yourself.

Want Shun Premier Chef's Knife Discount?

I have a variety of Shun knives in my kitchen. I bought the Premier Chef's Knife for cutting, slicing and chopping vegetables. It has been superb for performing those tasks.

I find that I can process meals that require lots of vegetable processing much faster since I bought this knife. I make lots of soups and salads. This knife makes such tasks a breeze due to it's sharp blade and the non-stick blade surfaces. I really recommend this beautiful knife. If you buy it, take care to wash it immediately after using. Then, place the dry knife in a quality knife rack to protect the blade edge and finish. With proper care, it should last for decades without deterioration.

This is a wonderful cutting board! I like the handle on the end and the gripping band on the other end which keeps the board from sliding unexpectedly on the counter or when storing it standing on end. I bought a large and a small one and have used both many, many times! They clean up nicely by hand or in the dishwasher and have not stained. I love the color which has not faded or distorted. I use the small one the most but then again, I cook for two. The larger one comes in handy for bigger recipes. I would recommend this to any cook who likes a little flair for their kitchen chores!

Camco 43503 RV Adjustable Cutlery Tray (White)

Camco 43503 RV Adjustable Cutlery TrayThe product information says that this tray is 7 x 10 x 2, so surely it will fit in a drawer that's 9 1/4 x 10 1/2 by 2 1/2, right? Nope. I even remeasured the drawer and clearly this product is bigger than the description says. The other problem is that it doesn't hold anything unless you have enough room to expand it. I admit that this one is really my fault. I should have measured my knives too, because they are too long and the bins are so narrow that it will only hold two of them side by side. The picture indicated as much but I failed to notice.

This might be a great tray for a single person with only a couple of eating utensils, but it won't hold even close to a full set of silverware. And beware of the measurements, they are wrong.

Its a bit to small. The knives are too long for it. Steak knives dont fit at all. Still its ok.

This drawer insert is way better quality than I was expecting! Too bad my RV drawer is not wider. I barely get to expand the drawer at all. However, I wanted to open it up for a tight fit in the drawer and it works just fine. I didn't expect the plastic to be as thick as it is. Nice product.
