TBCL Utility Knife 17 Centimeters

I think $100 knives are hype so I took a chance on these more moderately priced knives and I believe it was worth it. They are the most expensive knives I have and now I have two of the utility knives (did give one away though), one of the boning knife, and one of the 15cm kitchen knife. You have to be careful with these knives because once they start cutting they will slide through, so you have to have good control and positioning or will cut yourself. The bad is that the one 17cm utility knife I'm using came with a not so perfect blade though it's still very sharp. It has like three tiny knicks that are hard to see. The blades are thinner then normal blades but I was hoping the material be harder then this. Another problem is that even after washing/drying the utility knife after every use there is a tiny spot on the blade with a small discoloration in the metal. I wonder if it was used for something it shouldn't have been used for or maybe the crafting was bad. The first utility knife didn't have the same problem and is slightly sharper than the imperfect one. Other reasons I chose these knives were their all metal construction and good grip. They are well weighted (on the light side). They have a sharp tinging echo to them when you hit the blade with a fingernail, different then most other knives. This makes me think the handle is hollow and maybe welded onto the blade. Comparatively, my mom has two dollar asian knives (extremely good knives) and those are almost as sharp as these and probably much easier to sharpen. So there is a question of value when I bought these but still think my purchase was well worth it. I hope they last a long time and I won't have to break out my sharpener. I have 15 dollar big company knives I bought at the local store and I thought I was rip-offed in terms of usability! btw the boning knife is thicker then the other two knives and none of the knives have the indentation pockets that reduces food stickage. I think for my next blades damascus steel or ceramic blades will be something i will look into.

Chroma Type 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

Let me start by saying I was so excited to get these knives when I ordered them from Amazon. I had previously ordered the Chroma 301 Chinese Cleaver separately and I love it. So when Fed-Ex delivered this I tore open the box and visions of the gourmet meal I would be preparing that evening using these knives flashed through my head. As I lifted the box up into my lap to open the cardboard flap I head what sounded like 7 Chroma knives tossed into a spinning clothes dryer might sound like (Well... not quite that bad). To my dismay, I discovered all the knives were located in one small cardboard box. They were loose and each was individually protected by a thin bag and a thin cardboard sheath. Each knife also had a hard plastic knife tip protector but 5 of the seven had fallen off and their tips were free and exposed. In addition, two of the knives had lost their bags and cardboard sheath completely and looked like they had been rubbing together for an extended amount of time. They were scratched and the handle edges were rough. Upon closer inspection two other knives had rough scratched handle edges.

Now I know why they say don't buy your knives in a block set. The individual Chinese cleaver I ordered came in perfect condition in a beautiful black padded custom presentation box. It seems that all Chroma individual knives receive this nice extra touch. For the amount of money these knives cost in a block set they should arrive in pristine condition especially since the whole point of these knives is to display their sleek smooth stainless look.

One last note, another reviewer claimed that these knives are made in China. I searched high and low and found no conformation of this. The box does not state where they were made. The Chroma website conveniently says "Our knives are manufactured in the best factories and are made of the finest and strongest modern high-grade steel." It also says, "The handle of the Type 301 by F.A. Porsche is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel, and the blade is made of high-quality Japanese 301 steel. The blade of each knife is carefully sharpened by the hand of a master." If they were made in Japan like Shun or Global knives, I think they would say it. Judging from the quality of the block set I am thinking they may be made in China then finished and sharpened by a Japanese master.

Let's hope they fix the packaging in the near future, these knives really feel great in my hand and I hope to have a complete undamaged set soon. Thank you Amazon for having such a fair and responsible return policy.

These knives, and the block, are gorgeous and a joy to use. I'm more of a designer than a cook, but these beauties get compliments from my designer and foodie guests alike.

Farberware Pro Forged 5-Inch Chef's Knife, black handle

I'm actually quite amazed at the quality of these "Pro Forged" knives from Farberware. I found the 8" version of the Chef knife on closeout in a discount store for $5, and got it just to have a beater knife to toss in the camping gear kitchen set. Now, I've got to admit that I'm something of a knife snob. My kitchen has a ridiculous number of knives including numerous examples from some of the finest German and Japanese manufacturers. I needed another chef knife like I need more clutter. But, this Chinese made cheap chef's knife sharpened up very well and seems to be made of a much higher quality steel than I've ever seen in a knife this cheap. The handle is big and squarish and it fits my large hands better than many of the pricier name-brand chef's knives in my collection. I'm very impressed.

This Farberware 5" chef's knife is just the right size and weight for general use in my kitchen. It retains it's sharp edge well and is easy to sharpen when it gets dull. It doesn't have the heft that a discontinued Farberware 5" chef's knife has, but is still one of a very few knives I reach for on a regular basis. The 5" length is long enough for most chopping jobs and not cumbersome like an 8" blade is. I'll probably buy another one as a gift!

I used five star Henckels for twenty years until my recent divorce. This is no Henckel, but it's sweet knife for the price. The balance isn't perfect, but it's pretty close. This is almost a real chef's knife for almost nothing. Not bad at all. An insane value for the price.

Farberware makes an outstanding "pro forged 6 inch chef's knife" with a sturdy black handle that's truly easy to hold onto; you never feel that you're going to accidentally let this knife slip out of your control. It just plain feels like it is well made and I hear from my friends that Farberware knives last practically forever.

This knife does indeed have a strong, full tang. It is quite sharp (be careful when handling this) and unlike another of the reviewers here I found it to be sharp enough for my uses on the very first try. Of course you can sharpen it if you want to make it even sharper; that's up to you. This knife makes it child's play to cut meat, skin off chicken (dietary restriction for me) and even small particles of fat within the meat of a steak or a piece of chicken so that you only get the meat--awesome!

I don't see why you couldn't wash this knife in a dishwasher; it certainly seems to be in every way dishwasher safe.

Overall, this is one low-maintenance extra sharp kitchen knife from Farberware and I highly recommend it. If you can, buy the knife on this website as the price I paid in a local store was three dollars more than the current advertised price!

Ginsu Sofuto Series Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel 4-Piece Wasabi Style Steak Knife Set 5828

The good: This is an ok knife set considering its price. It has a handle that is coated with a semi-soft nonslip grip and unlike many other steak knives, it is not serrated (which I like). So it's functional enough as a steak knife.

The bad: The set I received had one defective knife. The handle had a tilt upwards and was not aligned with the axis of the knife like the other three. So I returned it and got a replacement which was even worse.

The ugly: The title (at this time) says: "Ginsu Sofuto Series Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel 4-Piece Wasabi Style Steak Knife Set" and the description says: "Sofuto Series blades are made from Japanese 420J2 stainless steel that is well known for strength and sharpness". Now what exactly do you understand from this? If you think that you are buying a Japanese knife you will be surprised. Apparently it must mean that Japanese "style" steel is used because on the package it says it is made in China. I have nothing against China made stuff but I do not like the fact that "Japanese" is reiterated in the title and description while there is no mention that this is not a Japanese made knife. Draw your own conclusions.

I bought three sets of these; initially one blue set and one of the yellow (reviewed here). The blue turned out ok. The yellow set had a defective knife. Amazon accepted it back and I got a replacement which was even worse. The replacement also had a similarly defective knife, but in adition one of the knives had a cut on the soft material of the handle, and all of the handles were dirty (the blades only were in plastic, the handles were not protected). All of these sets were apparently sold by different or on behalf of different people on Amazon. So please note that this may be a problem with the yellow sets and may not be for the blue.

All in all it is an ok knife for the price but that is all. It does not compare to way more expensive brand knives that either have sealed seams or no seams (to prevent buildup of bacteria in the seams etc) but then they cost a fraction of those and they are still well functional. If the descriptions were more appropriate then I would feel much better about purchasing them (because right now I am really ticked off by these marketing gimmicks).

I ordered this set because of the design and was not disappointed. Be aware, they are not restaurant quality or dinner party quality. They are relatively lightweight and suitable for casual, everyday use. Unfortunately, a spot of tarnish was noticed between the tines on a dinner fork before it even made it into the utensil draw!

Manage your expectations with this set of flatware (18/0 stainless is a lower to mid-range quality, anyway); and purchase a higher quality set for good company (18/10 stainless)!

Stainless Steel Mezzaluna with Wood Handles, 10 Inch

I've made pesto with this twice, using a recipe I'll link to below. I was pleased to note that when they said 8 inches, it was 8 inches from handle to handle so the blade was actually a bit bigger than I expected! It's sharp enough to mince basil leaves, pine nuts, garlic and parmesan, and that's really all I need. I would not recommend getting a fancy cutting board to go with it, unless you plan to invest in a really amazing mezzaluna somewhere down the line. A large wooden one (I nabbed a cheap one from a grocery store) should be fine, and having a bowl to "contain" stuff doesn't really matter much as long as you're not a violent chopper.

All that said, this is a very average sort of knife. Eventually I will get a a really amazing mezzaluna and this is not that knife. It's excellent for the price, though, and has so far kept an edge for the few weeks I've had it. Perfect for a non-professional chef on a budget (who still wants quality).

And finally, the best pesto I've ever had, which requires a mezzaluna to make:

This tool reduces basil into pesto, roasted ancho peppers into chili, and whatever you want into whatever else you want with a minimum of fuss and bother. My sister turned me on to this a few months ago, and I must admit that I now reach for the mezzaluna instead of the blitzer when I need to chop small to medium amounts of stuff. You just grab the handles and rock it back and forth on your cutting board. Minimum effort and maximum results. Try making pesto with this, it really tastes better than pesto made in a food processor. I guess the Italians know a thing or two about cooking...

I recommend the 10-inch mezzaluna compared to a smaller sized one. We regularly eat at Chop't in DC, and were curious as to why we enjoyed their salad so much over other salad places in the city. Richardson Sheffield 5-Piece Forme Knife Set with Heart Shape Wood Block, Dark Wood

Out of the box, I was very happy with the knives. They were wonderfully sharp and effective in their intended purposes. My one concern (and it's not a small one) is that when we remove the knives from the dishwashwer, they've been coming out with small rust spots. I've never seen anything like that before (?!) and I'm trying to figure out if they were caused by something else or the knives themselves. If it was the knives, then my 3 rating is too high.

This is a very good quality knife block the knifes look great in my kitchen and are incredibly sharp. I have bought cheaper knives in the past and they temd to dull after a couple of months. these are still really sharp after a year you just need to use a steel (knife sharpener) every week or two and they are like the day i bought them

WOW. WOW. WOW. Do the prices of some things sky rocket from week to week or what? I got this set for LESS than HALF of what it is going for now. I paid -$54.76 (About 2 weeks ago!)At that price, it was a steal. Guess you have to put things on your wish list and really check them daily...or buy it outright.

Now, maybe this new price of $120.00 is still a good deal for the quality, but I feel really lucky at the moment having paid what I did.

It IS beautiful. The wood has many striations and is heavy as a cinder block. The knives seem to be sharp and balanced and have a good weight to them. All one piece of metal from handle to tip. Very contemporary. The blades are not skimpy or thin and they fit into the block perfectly.

One of the photos shows a set of 6 knives laying flat in front of some boxes. You get FIVE knives in this set, not 6. I imagine this photo is to show you the 'line up' of the Forme knives they have ?? In any event FIVE NOT SIX.

I cannot review the usage of these knives as they are a 'starter' set for my daughters first college dorm/apartment. But given the normal history of this "name" brand, I expect the usual great quality. I will update if anything goes amiss.

The knives were extremely well packaged in an original "off the store shelf" looking box, within another box. The wood block was well wrapped and each knife was protected in a thick cardboard sleeve and then in a plastic bag fitted to each knife.

Let me add that when WE look at the block, we don't see a "heart". Not in the sense it jumps out at you and you say "Oh look, a heart". We just see a contemporary looking curve.

Wish I had these during my first 'apartment' days. All I had were those thin, cheap knives that you could flex between two fingers like a spatula.

I will remind my daughter, again, how lucky she is.

Progressive International Set of 6 Chopping Mats

These aren't the most durable, but they do last through quite a few uses. The colors are cheerful, and they work fine. Their thin shape makes them easy to store. You can even curl them in your hands to make a sort of funnel to easily dump the chopped food into a pot. Nice item, and a bargain. And you can clean them in the dishwasher.

Recommended, but with these limitations: (1) Because they are so thin, you don't want to put anything hot onto them -they will warp. (2) Because they are so light, they can slide around the counter. These limitations eventually made me switch to much more expensive, thick, rubber-footed cutting boards -but only after a long period using these with good results.

I purchased these because they were highly recommended by Cooks Illustrated. The best chopping mats I've used to-date. Love the individual colored mats for fish, meat, veggies, etc.....helps avoid cross contamination. Will purchase sets for my children when they go out on their own.

At first glance, these seemed like sturdy cutting mats. But the larger size will not stay flat they curl, making them useless. Cheap price, cheap product.

I purchased the Catskill Butcher Block Oil based on by sister-in-laws reviews on how great this product was, and boy was she correct. I had my brother refinish an old butcher block for me and I immediately used this on it. The grains of the wood darken to such a beautiful warm shade that I couldn't stop looking at it. A nice solid board with the flip side being smooth, it has a nice working space for cutting up just about every thing. Global G-56 - 7 inch, 18cm Vegetable Hollow Ground Knife

My new favorite knife manufacturer! I bought the Global 7" vegetable knife after using the smaller 5 1/2" vegetable knife for six or eight months. The balance and dimpled grip works well for me. The shape of the blade is somewhat similar to a Chinese Chef knife and I find both of the Global Vegetable Knives to be great all purpose knives. Caution, these knives are so sharp that I have to use care not to choke up on the handle and accidently nick my index finger on the heel of the blade. Just a reminder to practice good knife skills and not be careless with these fine blades. They are clean and practical with their beautiful one piece stainless design and it is fun to see them in the hands of celebrity chefs on the Food Network from time to time. Although Global is in the upper half of the cuttlery price range, I think that they are a good value. We live in our kitchen and love expanding our culinary expertise so it is a pleasure to have quality tools.

i must say this wasn't the knife i should have bought.

but there is one thing i can objectively say about it:

this knife costs more due to the Hollow Ground thingie the blade isn't flat it has small lumps that are meant to prevent the stickyness of vegetables to the knife.

What actually happens is the exact opposite the vegetables stick to the blade like there is a vacume holding them.

other than that the knife looks amazing, weighs exactly like it should feels great in the hand, the edge is sharp.

Kuhn Rikon 4 Inch Red Paring Knife With Sheath

I'd seen these Kuhn Rikon knives recommended, and finding them at a discount picked up a couple of paring knives in this style ("Paring Knife Colori" on the package), and one of the slightly larger utility in a different style ("Nonstick ...."). The blades on both are nicely sharp, and they function well. Plus, the nicely designed sheaths make them attractive for camping, and they are even a nice backpacking weight.

HOWEVER .... I would warn you away from this simpler style, with a single-colored handle. That handle is smooth plastic, overly slick even when dry and I'm sure even more so when covered with peach juice, say. Further, there is not adequate contouring of the handle, little to keep your fingers off the blade or ensure a good grip. Especially with a blade this sharp, you don't want to end up grasping the wrong end!

Instead, I'd urge you to get one of the slightly more expensive "Nonstick" line. This has a handle with a textured surface and a nice contour that ensures a firm grip. The description is confusing, because all the knives are nonstick coated, and Amazon refers to all of them as 'nonstick', applying the term 'colori' to the ones I'm talking about (though Kuhn Riko calls them all 'colori'). Go by appearance ... the ones you want have a more obvious hand grip look to them, and the handle is two tone, with white where your fingers grip. Kuhn Rikon Colori Nonstick Paring Knife, Blue

This paring knife is the prettiest thing I have ever seen. Available in 6 attractive colors. The knife's non-stick surface coating is such a clever idea. Why they have not think of it before? The coating helps to make the blade glide with less effort. It seems that the blade is super sharp because of this. Perfect size for peeling fruits.

I love, love, love these little utility knives! I think the only kitchen tool I reach for more often is a dish-towel. I use them for everything cutting up vegetables and salads, cubing meat or disassembling a chicken for soup, making cheese platters, and even slitting open boxes from Amazon.com :) I love the serrated edge not too finely serrated (the ones with fine serrations seem to get "stuck" in cheeses and meats.) It just goes right through a tomato without squishing it, and food preparation goes so much faster and easier than with one of those expensive "sharp" edged knives my husband is always trying to convince me to use.

I used to have only one of these, and I guarded it so jealously that my family started calling it "Sting" and warning others not to mess with my Precious. So I ordered a few more, since they're such a bargain. This way I always have a clean one in the drawer when I need one.

I now have 3. One is 3 years old, and it's still sharp. I have small-ish hands and arthritis, but the knife is slender, so I can use it with no pain at all.

This would make the perfect inexpensive little house warming gift.

This is a wonderful paring knife! In fact I orded a set and one more of these for family members because I was so impressed by the quality of the blade for such a reasonable price. I like the fact that this knife is made in Switzerland and not China. One of my children is a chef professionally and he was impressed with the quality of the blade for the price I paid.

Holds up well in the dishwasher too. Very sharp, be careful when washing by hand.

Very happy with my purchase and plan to buy more of the Victorinox products down the road.

John Boos 24-by-18-Inch Reversible Maple Cutting Board

I have purchased many smaller boards over the years trying to go the "cheaper" route. This board is a fine example of you get what you pay for. Not only does it perform flawlessly, it looks elegant on the counter. I have a very, very small kitchen and this large board is right at home. Sure it's heavy and expensive...but so is a Lexus. Bottom line is when you buy a board like this, you never need to purchase another. Very satisfied buyer on this product as well as everything I have purchased through Amazon. A++

This Boos block is the perfect size for my kitchen counter top. It is thick and never warps. I leave it out all the time. I use one side for meats and the other for everything else. It cleans easily and always looks great!

The cutting board arrived without blemish (no cracks, no chips, no unbecoming marks or wood defects).

I have oiled it as directed by the manufacturer, with the manufacturer's brand of oil. That is probably not necessary, but it worked out splendidly.

Coffee has been "spilled" (ie dumped) on the board to see how well it cleans had it washed right out of the oiled board, as one would expect. I also chopped a bunch of garlic on the board and it cleaned up well without stench.

I would recommend this board to any home chef. It is solid enough to take the beating one gives it when cooking for a family of four, it is small enough not to kill your countertop space and it is easy to maintain.

This is the second cutting board that I have. I bought my first Boos board about 5 years ago. Use is everyday, always wanted another one to put right along side of my first one.

I love them!The old one still looks almost like new, even with constant everyday use! I highly recommend these boards! You will not regret this purchase. With regular cleaning and oiling, you will have these forever ! Would also make incredible gifts!

Iittala Piano Collection

For a while, we've been looking for the most satisfying and unique flatware for our daily use and also for casual/formal parties. It finally ended and in the process, we ended up owning 3 different sets. Two of them are made by iittala, a Finland company who makes their products in finland and not in CHINA.

After checking out lot of local department stores we first got Villeroy & Boch New Wave Flatware set which we returned as it didn't feel good in hand. Now, after owning iittala, New Wave looks terrible.

After lot of browsing and research online and in local stores, we ended up owning WMF Taika Flatware for daily use as amazon has incredible deal on 43-piece set. WMF is a European company but the flatware is made in China.

For formal parties, we got iittala's Artik Flatware set. This set has very similar finish to Piano flatware and is more affordable for us.

Then, we were very fortunate to find a bargain deal on Piano dinner forks and knives from a charity organisation that sells on ebay! Of the three, we like Piano the most. No wonder the price is high! It sure shows in the finish and style of the product. The stainless steel has a very vibrant shine to it and the handles are thick and very very comfortable to hold. They are not heavy since the inside of the handles is hallow but the outside of it is so thick that it feels as if its not hallow inside.

This set is sure to get more attention than anything else you put on the table to guests.In fact, iittala suddenly seems to be our favorite brand for kitchen. Amazon just started to carry lot of their products and I placed an order for their daily use drinkware.

This silverware designed by Renzo Piano was received as a gift and is absolutely beautiful. All the pieces work well in your hand and are elegant.
