Wusthof 2036 Bamboo Cutting BoardI received this Wuestof cutting board as a gift, along with some Wuesthof knives and kitchen shears. (if you would like to read my reviews for these items, click on "see all my reviews".) It's a good combo; I only had plastic cutting boards, and the wooden ones better for your knives. Plastic ones (and don't get the really hard ones)are useful for cutting meat, and putting into the dishwasher; but the wood looks nicer. Also,it is made from bamboo, a renewable resource, and not from petrochemicals.

This 8X12 cutting board is just right size for slicing, dicing and chopping up a few veggies. The Wuesthof 4.5 inch "multi-prep cook's knife" works very well for this. The Wuesthof logo is imprinted on the front side, but I don't see "Emeril" on it anywhere. The back side of the board is a cutting board,too, but it also has four rubber "feet" which add stability when used right-side-up. Groves on either side provide easy hand-holds. Flip it right-side up, pair it with a cheese knife, and you're good to go for serving cheese.

Good price/value. Treat it well--don't use the dishwasher or serrated knives, condition it with mineral oil from time to time. Highly recommend.

I have a set of bamboo cutting boards that are very thick and heavy. I like to think of these as quality items. After many years of use it still holds well but is feeling quite heavy these days.

With the mini Wusthof bamboo cutting board I feel this weight being lifted. I cannot use it for heavy tasks, such as slicing meaty products, but it is great for chopping small items like vegetables, fruits, and dicing garlic, for instance.

I enjoy this tool very much. It is light, easy to clean, and dries quickly enough for my next cutting task.

I received this cutting board along with a knife I had purchased and find it to be fairly useful. This isn't my primary cutting board and I wouldn't intend on using it as such, but it does come in handy. It's a good size for small cutting tasks. The bamboo makes it a somewhat attractive board, but also means added upkeep. An occasional light sanding and oiling will keep the board from fading under the wear of knife scratches and cuts. The grooves cut out on the sides of the board provide great handles. Price is fair for a bamboo cutting board. If you are looking for a deal, consider purchasing as a bonus with other Wusthof products.

I'm not sure how this board got this many positive reviews. I must've gotten a lemon. I know it's bamboo and constructed of four separate bamboo pieces but I thought this cutting board would last longer. I have uploaded a picture of the split board. I used it on a regular basis to do light cutting for vegetables. I'm a bachelor and I don't cook much, but I guess I was too much for this cutting board. I really wish I could get a refund.

And by abuse, I don't just mean heavy use, I mean *abuse*. I've had this cutting board for about three years. Since I cook for one mostly, the small size means it's my go-to cutting board. A typical day for this board means slicing a roll for breakfast, back out again at lunch for sandwich prep, slicing fruit for my smoothies for snack, then meat and/or veggie slicing board for dinner. It has pinch hit as a serving tray or cheese plate when I've run out of platters for parties. Gets unceremoniously thrown in the dishwasher at the end of most days.

Recently though, after all it's done for me, I have been using it to prep the raw food diet for my cat.

I have a Mundial heavy cleaver that weighs 1.3lbs and it can literally hack through a small chicken in one blow. I had been using other boards thick wooden ones mostly but they were starting to get really deep gouges in them. I even worried about the cat getting a splinter in his meal because the gouges were SO deep. Germs were a problem too since the deeper the gouge the less chance of getting it clean. These things really started to concern me and I needed a solution. Since the Wusthof is my cheapest board I figured I would give it a try and in case it broke I would not be at much of a loss.

Much to my surprise this little board totally solved the problem!

I am rough chopping chicken legs or thighs for the most part. Giving the Wusthoff a test run with a bone in chicken thigh, with a few quick whacks I was done and examined the board. Even though it's been in use for three years the surface still looks pretty new so I would easily see any new gouges but there were NONE! No sign of splitting or separating from the force/weight of the cleaver. The best part is that I can run it through the dishwasher to sanitize it after using with raw meat. I've been using it now like this for about two weeks and still no signs of wear. Woohoo!!!

I know it's not the best to put these types of cutting boards in the dishwasher but for my purposes this is a good and cheap solution for my needs. If at some point this abuse adds up to my needing to replace the board I feel a little better that bamboo is renewable whereas my more expensive blocks and boards are not and those were getting seriously damaged at a cost both "green" and dollar-wise that I do not want to consider replacing.

I'm not sure how long this little board will hold out with this type of usage but I'll update this review if needed.

This was a very flimsy version of the original that I misplaced. I paid more because I understood it was an authorized replacement. It was thinner than the original.

A new knife blade for the food mixer is a God send if you're grinding meat. When the old blade gets dull, it causes tendon and ligament striations to clog the holes in the grinder plate which turns the meat into goo. The new blade solves this problem by cutting off the meat as it presents through the holes in the grinder plate so the grinding process takes much less time, as well as eliminating the messy chore of unclogging it. This is particularly nice if you are grinding "select" grade meats for pork or pizza sausage. If you're still using youe original cutter blade, this replacement blade will put a smile on your face.

Found this blade at Amazon, read the reviews, some were puzzling. I needed a new blade because the original one just wasn't doing the job. Ordered this blade and when I received it placed it along side the original and it looked like a clone. Attached the blade, used it, it works fine, I'm satisfied.

Le Creuset Mini Cocotte Sets

Le Creuset Set of 4 Mini Cocottes with Cookbook, Cassisi got these at sur la table in charlotte, nc... before they even hit the floor. they come in a great little box for storage and include a recipe book... haven't tried a recipe in it yet, but it looks pretty good from the start. my only complaint is that you can tell the recipe book is translated from french. they opted to stress style in the layout, so they don't always give explicit instructions and assume you know how to cook. I do, and I think anyone who'd spend 20 bucks per mini cocotte would, too.

they're not a must-have kitchen item... but they sure will leave an impression on dinner guests.

I was expecting these to be a set of the Le Creuset mini-cocottes that are sold individually by Amazon (and Williams-Sonoma, Sur la table, etc.), but that's not what they are. Those are made of the usual Le Creuset enameled cast iron...this set is made of stoneware, just pottery.

It didn't say in the product description that these were stoneware, and I assumed they were cast-iron because their other mini-cocottes are cast-iron. That said, I probably should have guessed based on the price. I thought I was getting a deal with 4 cast-iron ones for $80; not such a deal when they're light-weight pottery instead.

Anyway, I may still keep them; haven't decided. They're very cute and I'm sure they'll bake well, but I think they're probably overpriced.

These gorgeous little cocottes are so stunning when being served to guests.

I have made many entrees and deserts in them and they always turn out perfectly. Scallops Mornay is my favourite. The size is perfect for these dishes, but maybe could be larger for a soup. (You need to buy the 12 ounce ones)

I knew that they were not cast iron and I don't think they are hard to confuse with other products.

The cook book is beautiful and full of great recipes.

I absolutely recommend these lovely dishes.

This is a beautiful little set of cocottes, and I love the color.

I got a box of Les Plats du Chef's individually wrapped pre-made frozen French onion soup from Costco, unwrapped them,

put one in each cocotte sans the lid, and cooked them in the stove within a larger container to avoid spill-over problems,

and the result was great. Ready-to-serve-French onion soup in beautiful little containers with almost no work at all!

Then I served the Caribbean blue cocottes on plates of contrasting blue, and the presentation was very pretty.

The accompanying book is nice, but quite small, and features colors of cocottes that are no longer available.

If anyone knows of another such book, it would be good to know about it.

Over-all, a great buy. Expensive, but Stuab's cocottes are even more so, though they are made from other materials

and feature other colors. Both are good for different reasons, but I like LeCreuset's design better.

Cheaper ones are available and nice, but are more likely to break over time. These are very sturdy.

We just returned from France where we bought the French version of this cookbook. It contains about 39 recipes. The "free" US version has only 25. The FR version sells for ten euros. Much better. Why did LC decide to cheapen the "free" version for the US crowd? There is certainly no shortage of translators.

Anyone who enjoys cocotte cooking might enjoy the whole book even if it needs translation. The translations are simple and fun.

As for the Made in China complaint: Ipads and most of the other stuff we use every day are made in China. The cocotte quality is excellent once you get past the xenophobia of the earlier gripe. These are great little cocottes. They heat up faster than the metal ones and are vastly less expensive for the same job unless you need to use direct heat.

We bought one set to try them. We now have three sets of cocottes and two extra Americanized cookbooks to give away.

Hampton Forge Amare 20-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 4We purchased 3 sets of Hampton Forge Amare Frosted approximately 2001. Love the pattern, the heavy feel and the durability. They still look almost new. We decided to order one more set because even with 12 place settings we run out of spoons and forks before the dishwasher is full. The pieces look exactly like our original Amare Frosted. EXCEPT: they feel just a tiny bit lighter and thinner. Blindfolded I could easily tell which is the original and which is the new. I would estimate that the new pieces are 95% the size, weight and thickness of the originals. This applies to the cereal spoon, salad fork, and dinner fork. Knife is almost identical. The larger soup/serving spoon is the most different at 90% the size and weight of he original.

I understand that the originals were manufactured under the name Hampton Silversmiths and the newer pieces are manufactured under the name Hampton Forge. Make no mistake, the newer Amare Frosted pieces are beautiful high quality flatware. If you don't own a set already you will have no issue what so ever. Just be prepared if your adding or replacing pieces like I did, that the newer pieces are just slightly lighter weight and ever so slightly smaller than the old.

5 stars for quality. 4 stars for matching original pattern.

I had purchased this set in 2005, and have loved it, but over the years, we've lost some of it. Decided to get a 8 more settings, and am disappointed that they aren't as heavy, slightly different shape and especially the "Big" spoon is much smaller than my old set. It's shorter and the spoon part is almost as small as the small spoon. Wish they hadn't changed it, as they look great and were nice and heavy!

I bought this item because I own the older, heavier, more sturdy Hampton Silversmith flatware, I read the other reviews that these were about 80-90% the same weight as the old ones, but thats totally inaccurate. Its about half the weight and sturdyness of the old flatware. It no longer stands out from other flatware, now its the same as any other cheap flatware. Very disappointed and will not by hampton i the future unless they go back to the original standards.

His criteria for a new board included: reasonable size (so he could bring it to the table) and a trough and well to catch meat juices. This board has those attributes, plus it is well made with small rubber feet to hold it secure while carving and handles (carved into the underside of the board) so it can be carried easily to where ever you like. I looked at every carving board on Amazon and on many other websites; many were nice, but none had ALL of the features I've mentioned -plus -a very reasonable price! I thought I had read enough reviews before clicking the 'buy' button...maybe I missed the one that happened to mention that this very nice-sized cutting board is not a raw wood board, it has been dipped (or painted) with a varnish type of coating. This means that every time you chop/cut on this board, slivers of the coating will be coming off into your food--This 'coating' should be mentioned and defined in the description. I thought others would want to know.

I got these to replace a set of knives that had become dull and no longer would hold an edge. What appealed to me about these knives was that they were stainless steel and dishwasher safe. I took off one star because one of the four knives arrived dull. Something wrong with the way the serrations were cut. Additionally one star was removed because the instructions that came with the set states that you must remove the knives from the dishwasher prior to the final rinse cycle. Now, if something is dishwasher safe, that means to me that it can withstand a complete dishwasher cleaning/rinsing/drying cycle. Not these.

The three sharp remaining knives are good and sharp and I have no problem with their performance as knives. Had I not thrown away the packing materials, I would probably have exchanged the set I received for another one.

Update 5/30/13. A second knife in the set has now gone dull. The remaining pair have been put into storage and a replacement set has been ordered. Although from a different manufacturer.

Just bought this set and got it in the mail. It is really nice. I have never felt such high end kitchenware. I am not even kidding. I eat out a lot, even the fancy restaurants don't always have good kitchenware. You can see scratches when they get low quality utensils.

Anyways, I bought this brand because of all the positive reviews and also because I like the design. It is really minimalistic. It can pair well with various types of dishes and plating. In my opinion, this is the kitchen equivalent of the little black dress. It goes with everything. Every kitchen should have something like this!

I have been waiting many years to buy a "real" set as i took a half of a set when i got divorced many years ago and it's just not done the trick!

But i'm having a problem with the knives they come out of the dishwasher "dusty" looking all the way up and down. Nothing else in my dishwasher does, and it is only 2 years old (the dishwasher). Any ideas why this would happen?

I wipe them on my shirt and i have to press very hard and i can see dust come off. I use a Cascade packet what i've always used with everything. I just dont understand why it's just the knives! They are so bright and shiny when they go in! Thanx for any help or ideas you can give...

I just got mine in the mail today and the first thing I did is start cutting stuff.

I used all of my old cutting knives (7 year old cutco) and compared it against this one... HOLY C>R>A>P!!!!

I effortlessly cut through a raw potato!!! I cut a piece of the potato and laid it on its side (a circular cross section). Then i proceeded to make 1-2 MM cuts across the entire cross section. I had 50 mini fries that were super thin.

Then I started to cut apples the long way (if the core is North/South I was cutting east to west). Basically these slices look exactly what you get from "apple chips" bags. I bet if I let them sit out and dry they would taste pretty good. Also another cool thing: the apples were dead white, they did not start to turn brown and oxidize...this knife is amazing. I'm buying one for my dad for his birthday.

The knife is great, but the peeler only peels in one direction so is unsuitable for lefties who peel using an outward motion. When I looked at the peeler I thought it would be simple enough to just flip the blade around to make it work for me. Wrong! Whoever designed the peeler designed it so that the blade cannot be reversed because the holes that the blade goes into are different diameters on each side. It's a terrible design decision that'll make me think twice about buying handed devices from this manufacturer.

I love these knives (this is my third). And the peeler is pretty incredible; this is the second one I've bought and couldn't be happier with the quality and sharpness. It only allows you to peel away from you, so it's a little tricky for apples but for straight veggies it's excellent.

CADDIE VEGETABLE KNIFE 6' BLADEA Caddie 6" stainless steel knife has been my favorite kitchen knife since 1985. It has a sturdy, balanced feel in the hand. The blade is wide, yet thin enough to make slicing quick and easy. Once slicing is done, slide the wide blade under the chopped stuff and let the knife help put it in the pan. I use it for cutting vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, etc. (Don't have a kow-of course I wash the knife when switching from veggie to meat, or from garlic to apple.)

My old Caddie knife Is still in excellent shape after almost 30 years of everyday use. The handle has a few scratches, but is attached as solidly as when It was new. I use a honing rod to keep the blade sharp. I will confess I have used my Caddie occasionally as a pancake turner and have even used the blunt end of the blade to scrape the bottom of a crusty pan. Like I said, it's a versatile tool!

I wash the Caddie by hand most of the time and rarely put it in the dish washer.

One drawback of the Caddie is that it does not have a sharp point.

Calphalon Katana Cutlery 18-Piece SetI have large hands, so the Katana/Santoku style gives me more room than most styles. The blade "twists" 90 degrees to become the core of the handle. It is a full tang design that is quite beautiful to look at. The acid etching adds to that appeal (which you really can't fully appreciate in the photos). They are well balanced and I work them better than anything else I have owned to date. I will not be looking for anything else while this set is still around.

They are made of a slightly softer steel than most professional grade cutlery I have used, but they sharpen easier because of that. All around I am beyond pleased and would recommend them at full price, so that makes them a bargain if you can shave off some $c-notes$ here at Amazon!

I spent about a month looking around at various shops for a great set of knives. This is what I ended up ordering, They are razor sharp! The material is made of thirty-three layers of stainless steel, has an outstanding ability to retain an edge and proven strength with VG-1.

Nothing feels better in your hand than these handles, they are not made for small hand though but for me they feel great. The material used to make the knife handle is much more important than you might think. Wooden handles have a tendency to rot or corrode. A corroded handle will make the blade fit loosely, which can be dangerous. These feel and great they are less likely to break than many other handles and are not overly heavy.

The way that a knife handle is designed is important. The part of the blade that goes into the handle (called the tang) should go all the way through on both sides. Many knife tangs only go part of the way through the knife's handle or on one side. This may cause the blade to come loose, but this has a full tang. They are well balanced and you need that to make sure you don't cut your self

Cutting with these tools is great since slicing is so easy.. I have tried with other knives, but never got as good of results as with this set. These are worth every penny, but do take care of them! They do need hand washing.

i got these to replace a department store brand set of knives I had for 8 years. OMG! even with all the sharpening i did to my old knives, these cut through things like they were hot butter! i'm an enthusiast cook in the kitchen (by no means a chef) so these live in "my domain". my favorite knives to use are the santoku and nakiri. claimed as VG-1, my small paring knife's tip bent a good deal when it slipped onto my granite countertop (ugh). still, i enjoy the balance, look, and feel of these knives. don't let them sit in water for a long time, they'll rust. AVOID dishwasher so as not to void the warranty. hand wash and dry immediately for longer life...and looks!

After using Victorinox's wavy blade steak knives for many years and being very satisfied, my wife and I looked for a set of new steak knives and bought these straight edged knives. They're very sharp and comfortable to use. Straight edged blades do indeed cut cleaner than wavy or serrated blades. Yes, they do need to be honed (quite often) on a sharpening steel to keep their edge, but that's how straight edged knives work. Hard to beat for the money.

This set is a recent purchase. Not supposed to go in the dishwasher, but they'll just have to get used to that. If they fall apart from frequent washings, at the price, they can be replaced. So far, there seem to be no problems with going through the dishwasher.

The knives have a nice size and weight with well shaped handles. Typical Cuisinart quality, which is to say, excellent.

A word of warning. These knives are very, very sharp! If you don't normally keep your kitchen knives in that condition, these will take some getting used to on your part.

Overall, an excellent value and seemingly an excellent product.

Alligator 11-1/4-Inch Slicer

Alligator 11-1/4-Inch SlicerI'm a huge fan of the Alligator dicers and was eager to try this slicer, but I'm not entirely impressed. First of all, it's heavy and has more parts to clean than its cousins. The disassembly and reassembly for cleaning is a bit awkward and being a bit of a klutz in the kitchen and always in a hurry, I'm not sure I could avoid getting cut on those blades. It's pretty much impossible to get cut on the dicer blades, even though they are sharp, because of the small grid and ease of just rinsing the thing off. This unit is quite a bit more elaborate and both top and bottom sections have to be taken apart for cleaning, leaving the blades more exposed than I'd like. They are also set in a tier arrangement (like bleacher seats set on edge) which makes the slicing more effective, but handling less safe. That for me is the downside.

On the upside, the unit slices most things really well. My first test was a tomato--a cruel test to start with :) but it passed with flying colors, cutting cleanly without squashing the tomato at all. You are limited in the size of tomato you can use if you want to slice a whole one, however, as the round grid is little more than 3" in diameter. Second test was a block of cheddar, something that is notoriously hard to slice evenly with a knife. This also sliced beautifully. I expected it to do a good job on things like carrots, zucchini, cucumbers and the like, and it did, but I'd be less inclined to use it for those things regularly because my beloved Microplane adjustable slicer works well for those too and I use the food processor for large quantities. Next test was a lime and although it did slice correctly, the juice squirted all over the place. It did eggs, strawberries and mushrooms perfectly, but that's to be expected. The only thing that didn't work was a ball of mozzarella, which got hopelessly squished and torn.

Bottom line, the product is well engineered (perhaps over-engineered) and very effective for some things, but needs a careful, patient hand for cleaning and the grid size does limit the amount of produce you can slice at one time.

I bought this for my coworkers that I manage at a local Italian restaurant. My boss didn't seem as excited as I thought he would be (though he IS a penny-pincher), but the hostesses/salad girls loved it at first cus it really saved time slicing tomatoes when we're busy, now after using it for awhile and a little misuse of it slicing itself (people were not careful to slice straight down) it doesn't work nearly as well.

J.A. Henckels 9-Inch Poly Sharpening SteelThis steel is very nice for the price. The length is fine for nearly any knife and the material itself is of a suitable hardness for correcting cutting edges. The handle is easy to hold, and it has a nice heft and balance. Exactly what I would expect from a Henckels product.

Now, a brief clarification: A steel will absolutely not "sharpen" your knife. It doesn't have a grit so much as the steel used is much harder than the knife. (If you have a dull edge you can run it along the finest steel for hours and not get a sharper cutting edge.) What it does do is simply correct the angle of the knife's edge that tends to get bent to either side during normal use. When you run the leading edge of the knife down the steel in the correct manner, a sharp edge should go back to the appropriate angle. If you have a dull blade, you need to hone a new edge. (For that you may consider using a professional sharpening service. this can be a little tough for a novice...sorry!) Once that is done, use your steel each and every time you pull your knives from their home to keep the edge at peak usability.

Keep in mind that you could sharpen a spoon to a razors edge, it just won't keep it for long. Better knives hold an edge for much longer due to the quality of the materials and their hardness. Few of us need an exquisitely expensive set of knives. Just buy a nice set for a good price and keep on using a good steel!

REMINDER: Sharpening steels are of extremely fine grit use to KEEP the blades sharp... the finishing touch, if you will. To repair a blade with significant damage, you'll need to get a sharpening stone.

All in all, this sharpening steel is as advertised: the Henckels name, solid construction, nice grip.

The sharpening steel will probably last longer than I will.

Mundial 5100 Series 10-inch Slicer with Granton Edge is a good knife. It's still new so it is razor sharp as one would expect. This knife is NOT fully forged as most of the other Mundial 5100 Series knivesthe blade is rather thin and light weight. Also, the handle feels small to me.

Only time will tell if this was a worthwhile purchase.

Edgeware Edge Grip 2 Stage Knife Sharpener

Edgeware Edge Grip 2 Stage Knife SharpenerThis is a fantastic product. It's inexpensive, ergonomically friendly, and sharpens very well. Because it is both small and attractive, I can leave it on the kitchen counter beside my knife block for very quick, easy touch-up sharpening (use the ceramic slot for this purpose).

You may or may not want to buy an expensive electric sharpener to sharpen all your knives a couple of times a year, but you definitely want to have a Smith's Edge Grip handy so you can easily keep your edges sharp on a day-to-day basis.

I purchased this knife sharpener because the price was right. I wanted a spare knife sharpener to keep at my camper. It will sharpen knives just as well as more expensive two stage sharpeners do. The cutters are fixed so you can't replace them. At the price who cares, buy a new one and save the aggravation of replacing cutters at $7 a pop.

I bought this specifically for some inexpensive "Farberware Pro" knives, for which it matched the factory bevel very well. I have not tried it with any other knives, but I imagine Farberware's grind is fairly typical of most kitchen knives being sold today.

This sharpener is not comparable to a stone or similar systems when faced with varied or more complex grinds, and is not going anywhere near the cleaver, for example. However, the carbide bits are very aggressive, much better than typical "coarse" ceramic sharpeners, and could probably regrind a knife fairly quickly. The "fine" ceramic rods are standard fare.

The grip looked small in the picture but, combined with the traction from the rubber bottom, proved comfortable and completely secure. Of the fixed angle, countertop sharpeners I have encountered, this is the best designed and I expect to replace it with same model when it wears out.

This is a magnificent little sharpener. As a former professional chef, I can honestly say if this product had been available twenty years ago I would have had one. When the blade dulls the work is slower and more likely to result in inferior cuts and accidental cuts. If you follow the instructions you'll have a razor sharp knife in about one minute. I recently bought this to sharpen all of my kitchen knives which had gone dull over the years. At first, I didn't think it worked too well. But then I went to the Edgeware website and watched their YouTube video on how to use it, and realized that you may have to pull the knife throught the sharpener up to 10 times to get it sharp. (I was initially only pulling it through a couple times.)

After pulling through the knives about 5 times, the knives did indeed get very sharp. For my knives, I pulled them through the "course" side 5-6 times, then through the "fine" side about 4 times. Seemed to work well for me.

Another tip I learned by watching Edgeware's YouTube video, was to set the sharpener on the edge of the counter at a 45 degree angle. (That's apparently what the v-shaped groove is for on the bottom of the sharpener.) When the sharpener is on the edge, you can pull the knives straight through and down without worrying about hitting the countertop and scratching it or breaking the tip off your knife.

Lastly, I'm not sure why some reviewers say that this only works on small knives. I used it on small knives, as well as all of my larger chef style knives. The process is exactly the same no matter the size of the knife. So it should work the same, and indeed it worked just fine on all of my small and large knives.
