Farberware 8-Inch x 10-Inch Poly Board With 3.5-Inch Resin Parer and Sheath, Green

Farberware 8-Inch x 10-Inch Poly Board With 3.5-Inch Resin Parer and Sheath, GreenIt was dislike at first sight when I saw that the packaging is that sharp plastic kind of shell that has to be cut away with scissors and the product has to be pried out. Then I saw the stickers on the front and back. These weren't the simple kind you can just pull off cleanly with one try. No. They're the kind of stickers that pull off, paper first, then there's a gob of adhesive that you have to peel off in pieces until you finally get down to the last smear of adhesive that has to be held under steaming hot water and soaked in detergent -and even then, it was a struggle to get the goo off. It probably doesn't help matters that the good is on a textured surface that holds the goo at varying depth. This removal process took at least twenty minutes and I was not a happy camper. I don't know what kind sadist designs those adhesive systems but I wish s/he would get fired fast.

Now about the size: Yes, I read the dimensions but I purchased anyway hoping the color trim and handle-hole weren't included in those numbers. I was hoping it was cutting surface. Nope. It's the whole cutting board, and notice that there are rounded corners, reducing the cutting surface even more. I'm sure I'll be looking for replacements for these boards, but I'll use them while I shop around because at least they're not all sliced up like my old boards.

The knife had nothing to do with my decision to buy these. I doubt I'll ever use the knives so I can't include anything about them in my review except to say they are attractive if you have a green-accented kitchen like I do. I also like the shade of the trim on the boards. It's accurately represented on the product page.

Curious Chef Large Nylon Plastic Knife

Curious Chef Large Nylon Plastic KnifeMy 8yo and 5yo used this knife for the first time tonight and loved it. Planning on ordering one more so they can both chop at the same time.

My granddaughter loved the knife and can now cut up her own fruit and vegetables. She helps my daughter in the kitchen.

Great for a 'Big Helper'. Keeps little fingers safe. Not great so great at actually cutting, but is worth making cooking fun and healthy.

Bought this looking for a plastic knife to replace an old Rubbermaid knife that broke. Unfortunately, the square tip make it unsuitable for cutting things in coated pans (which is what I need to do.) Construction is OK, but why would I want a non-rounded tip? What it needs is a shape similar to a metal knife. Why do I need a plastic chopper?

8" Thai Chefs Knife, #21 (Kom Kom)

8' Thai Chefs Knife, #21This is a large knife! It works great for smashing garlic with the flat of it.

This knife is pretty light, but feels very solid when you're holding it. Be extremely careful! It is very, very sharp. If you touch your hand with it, you will slice the skin!

Slices vegetables like a dream! Even good for slicing bread!

Not so good for fresh mozzarella because of the width of the blade, which sticks to the soft cheese somewhat.

Don't scrape with the sharp side use the back or head of the knife for that unless you want cutting board shavings in your food.

I'm very pleased with this knife. Great value for the price and worth the shipping costs!

I really enjoy these Thai style cooking knives. What makes them unique is the thin lightweight blade which is very sharp. The large flat blade face is useful, as another reviewer pointed out, for smashing garlic, as well as for scooping chopped things to transfer to the stove. The knife is large but surprisingly light and accurate. I find this general blade shape to be the most overall useful kitchen knife you can have. It performs most jobs adequately and many jobs exceptionally. I particularly like it for slicing and carefully cutting vegetables. It's also good for slicing fish, decent at cutting raw meat, and the thin but tall blade makes it surprisingly good at slicing fresh baked bread (does not crush the bread and holds a straight line).

For those who use and abuse the venerable 8" Kiwi Chef knife of the same style I'd like to compare the two below:

I got this to accompany my Kiwi 8" knifes. Like this knife, they are extremely affordable yet sharp. This has a full tang (kiwi uses half tang) and appears to be incrementally better in quality. The Kiwi knives do NOT hold an edge for long and you should be prepared to sharpen once a week if regularly used. I don't mind that, but would prefer a more durable edge. So far, the Kom Kom appears to hold it's edge longer though I've only been using it for a couple weeks now. The Kom Kom, while light, is significantly heavier than the Kiwi. I find this, paradoxically, to reduce hand fatigue. The reason being is that the Kiwi is so light that you must push it through your food which can really wear your hand out after a while. The shape and weight of the Kom Kom knife allows a more relaxed cleaving type of cut. Another difference is in the angle of the blade from top to bottom. The Kiwi has a more concave shape meaning that food at the top of the blade can escape completely being cut completely through in exchange for very good cutting performance from the back half of the blade. The Kom Kom knife is still rounded in this manner but less so and tends to cut better along the entire length of the blade. The Kiwi knife is better for some items like soft cheeses, or times when you need maneuverability more than cutting power..it's piercing point is thinner as well and easier for stabbing and splitting pumpkins and squashes.

If all you've tried so far is European or Japanese style chef knives, you should give these a shot. For the price you really can't go wrong.

I got this for my wife after reading about some reviews in foodie mags about Chefs loving to but Kom-Kom products because of the great price, and stellar sharpness. They weren't kidding, I can give testament to that sharpness. We are big fans of butternut squash, but for anyone that has cut it before, you know the skin and flesh making cutting it a chore. We constantly sharpened our knives, and not junkers mind you, to make sure they were sharp enough to not slip during cutting. They still struggled with Mr Butternut Squash. Not anymore, this thing went through it like butter. I love this knife, there is absolutely nothing it won't cut through. I typically use this for veggies, but we have used it for meats as well when we are trying to cut through chicken, steak, pork and other stuff for stir fry or similar setups. I'd highly recommend this knife, it is inexpensive and handles great.

A very nice knife indeed. It's sharper by far than any other that we have. The handle is rather cheaply made I believe but perhaps that is part of the design. Well pleased with handling, delivery and everything in general.

Lets say, I have worked enough in kitchens ( 15 years) to know what tools are convenient, easy and affordable to make job pleasant. If you ever wonder how in the hell this Asian Duds can chop so fast something, well try one of those and you will find the answer. The steel is soft so I would not recommended to be used on bones. The knife is best for chopping, slicing and dicing vegetables and fruits. It is very easy to maintain, I mean sharpness. Bottom line if it really gets dull buy two more they are so cheap. Hope this help.

Tuftop Country Morning Bluebirds Cutting Board

Tuftop Country Morning Bluebirds Cutting Board Size: MediumBought this for my wife as a Christmas present. She's a big Blue Bird fan. The picture is really nice. Clear and crisp colors. Good size for just about anything in kitchen.

One slightly negative comment. This has a "Super strong tempered glass" and it does. When chopping harder items, like carrots, the knife hits the glass after cutting through and makes a loud clicking noise everytime time it hits. I'm being picky, but the noise started to drive me crazy. Really nothing you can do about it. Different than cutting on wood or plastic, which absorbs the noise.

We like this so much we, I, can put up with the clicking noise.

Kuhn Rikon Classic Serrated Utility Knives, Set of 2, Blue and Periwinkle

Kuhn Rikon Classic Serrated Utility Knives, Set of 2, Blue and PeriwinkleI already own two of their small paring knives and these are just as nice. One comment, however, Amazon's description "Kuhn Rikon Classic Serrated Utility Knives, Set of 2" led me to believe that both knives would be serrated. Only the smaller, Periwinkle one is serrated. However, the other knife, which is a chef's knife is also very nice and useful, so I'm not really complaining, just explaining that the description might lead you to believe they are both serrated.

Knifes are very sharp. Good value for kichen and general household uses. I would definitely recommend these knifes to others.

...whatever the color name -the colors and sizes are easily distinquished. The larger knife, on the left, in light blue, has a 5.75" blade, with a very fine serrated blade. The smaller knife, on the right, in turquoise, has a 4.75" blade, and has a noticeable serrated blade. Keep them in the blade covers and they should stay sharp for a long time, as running serrated knives through a knife sharpener is not recommended. These are great knives.

Zhen Japanese VG-10 Steel Gyutou Chef Knife 12"

Zhen Japanese VG-10 Steel Gyutou Chef Knife 12'This could be the best chef's knife available for under $200. The grade of steel is excellent--VG-10 is considered one of the "super" steels, and only top-tier knives are made out of it (only the ultra-expensive industrial powdered steels like cowprie and SG-2 are rated higher). It sharpens well, holds an edge, holds up well to corrosives like tomato and onion juices, and generally performs across the range of properties: 60RC hardness, doesn't chip easily, yet doesn't fold easily... a super steel.

It is made in the "san-mai" way, with layers of stainless steel over the VG-10, to help keep it free from rust or corrosion.

It's designed to be used by a real cook--someone using "the pinch" will be comfortable. Nothing sharp or rubbing or getting in the way. For amateurs the handle is nice, micarta, a good shape, non-slip, curved to fit most hands, and looks beautiful.

The knife comes razor sharp, with a western style 50/50 edge, which makes it much easier to care for and re-sharpen when needed. I am guessing the edges are at around 20 degrees. Steel it once or twice to get rid of burs, then rinse it in warm soapy water, then you are ready to go to town.

awesome knife good balance for cutting 30+ lbs fish & good steel .. for $$ ooh yeah.. very competitive price with Japan made knife , I wish they have come with the saya...

MinoSharp Medium Stone Sharpening Kit

MinoSharp Medium Stone Sharpening KitThis is a quality whetstone, and it works really well. This is my first attempt at home sharpening, so I started with pocket and hunting knives to practice my technique before letting my Globals touch this. The guides do a nice job of making you keep the correct angle for Global knives. If you are tired of trying to find somewhere to sharpen your Global knives, then you should buy this whetstone! With a little practice, I am able to keep my knives almost factory sharp.

I do not personally own one, but my sushi senai does, and it works great! I've used it on my blue steel yanagi. ( a 350 dollar blade) And for you home sharpeners out there if you are sharpening western style knives put a penny between the blade and the stone to help measure out the proper angle

This is a great product, and I got it at the same price here as I would have anywhere else online.

If you are in culinary school, I would recommend you shop around at local stores first since they often have student discounts you won't find online.

If you are a home user, I would recommend buying an informative book on knife care so you don't destroy your stone/blades while trying to make them sharper.

My only knock: be very careful with the guides. You have to clean the insides very carefully and that can be difficult since there isn't much space. The second time I used them they scratched my new and very nice paring knife quite badly.

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with Block

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with BlockI got this as a wedding gift, and I was amazed at how much of a difference it makes in the kitchen! Good knives make cooking such an enjoyable experience, and Wusthof is well-known to be one of the best out there. The 8-piece set is perfect for people who want to start with a good set and build up on it. Of course I use the chef's knife the most, but I also use the bread knife and paring knife a lot too. I think a santoku knife would be a nice addition to this set, and perhaps steak knives would be wonderful to fill in the 6 slots on the bottom of the block, but in terms of practicality, I never feel like I need more than what I already have (but this is coming from a person who is a beginner in the kitchen). I have been using my knives for about 1 1/2 years now, and the knives are still as sharp as they were when we first bought it. I'm sure we will have to sharpen them eventually, but with good care I expect these to last a very long time.

I'm no professional chef, but I've been doing a lot of cooking and learning about cooking the last few years. I started out with some Farberware knives. Those were just a waste of money. They inset the blade into the plastic handle and several times when I was cutting through vegetables the blade broke out of the handle and came flying up back at me. That's why you need a full tang, meaning the blade runs the entire length of the handle. The Farberware knives were not much more than sharpened sheet metal stuck in cheap plastic. I then moved up to a few Chicago Cutlery knives. They are no longer made in Chicago. And while they do cut good, they are still made out of a thick stamped out and sharpented sheet metal. Then I got a Caphalon set. That's when I finally got a good set. When you get a good balanced knife you'll know it. It feels like you could just chuck them across the room like a knife thrower. The Caphalon's have a great ergonomic handle are made of good steel and are well balanced. They are no sheet metal knife. I also like how they label the end of the knives so they are easy to find. The Caphalon's have the most ergonomic handle of any knife I've tried. They just conform to your hand. My complaint with them would be that I don't like the harsh cerrations on the steak knives. My drying towel catches up in them everytime I go to clean them. The Wusthof steak knives don't have the cerrations, making them easier to clean and making a nicer cut through the meat. I also think the Wusthof knives have two other advantages. The steel seems slightly better. And they are lighter. The blades are a little thinner than the Caphalon knives but that works to their advantage allowing for a lighter knife and for bending on the only the knives that need to bend a little. Wusthof just seems to put a little more thought into its design. I love the design of the kitchen shears. The are designed to easily come apart, making them much easier to clean. The Wusthof knives seem to be made better than the Henckel's, but both are good. And I like how the Wusthof design seems to be consistent. Henckel's has so many various designs of the same knife that I'd be scared if I went to buy a replacement knife if I lose a knife that I couldn't get that design any longer. I think with Wusthof, I could buy a knife 10 years later and it'd match perfectly with my Classic set.

My grades:

Farberware: F (don't waste your money)

Chicago Cutlery: C (good knives, but they are made out of a softer sheet metal type steel, they dull quickly)

Caphalon: B+ (great knives, if you want a great nice at a lower price these are great, I just hate the cerrations on the steak knives though)

Henckel's: A(not built quite as well as the Wusthof's and are not as ergonomic as Caphalon)

Wusthof: A (if the handle was a little more ergonomic I'd give it an A+)

Buy Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with Block Now

The knife block itself has room for many other knives, and 6 steak knives. The knives themselves are extremely well made. The black handles with metal rivets are definitely a classic/elegant look, and the knives are incredibly sharp. Heavy and sturdy, these knives also hold their edge very well. My favorite knife is the 6" utility knife, because it's not too big, it can be used by men and woman alike (the 8" chef's knife may be a bit big for smaller women), and it's thin enough to get into smaller areas. The smaller 2 knives are greater for vegetable prep.

Definitely don't put these in the dishwasher. And make sure if you buy steakknives, to put them in EDGE UP... as the edge will wear down if you keep sliding the edge along the wood by putting them in edge down.

I already threw all my other knives out. Very happy!

Bought a set of these very knives 25 years ago and have never been disappointed. At that time, we had a problem with one knife, which was immediately replaced at no charge. Three years ago we bought a set of Chicago Cutlery knives as a gift for our daughter. It quickly became apparent that they were mediocre knives that quickly dulled and performed poorly. They were an embarrasment for us. We bought this set as a replacement. The contrast is remarkable. These are truly classic, top quality, high performing knives.

Hampton Forge Tomodachi 6-Inch All Purpose Kitchen Knife, Orange

Hampton Forge Tomodachi 6-Inch All Purpose Kitchen Knife, OrangeI've uploaded the correct picture... picked this up for my Mother as a gift along with the 8" bread knife.

Decent drawer knife, since it has its own sheath... 30 yr warranty... diswasher safe.. cheap.

What else more is there to say at this price :)

I originally got this knife when my roommate at my old apartment had one.

I actually got it as a gift for my boyfriend, because he just kept raving about how great it is! It's easily washable, sturdy, very sharp and cuts through just about anything. It's small enough to be less-weildly but large enough to cut through most things you need to cut through (meat, fruit, etc.) For the price especially (my roommate said she got it especially in a certain state, Ha!) I think it's a grade-A all-purpose knife.

Wusthof Classic 4-Piece Cook's Cutlery Set

Wusthof Classic 4-Piece Cook's Cutlery SetI bought this set for my wife for Christmas, mainly because I was stuck on ideas as to what to get her. She spends a lot of time in the kitchen and she had been using an old set of Chicago Cutlery and several unbranded cheap giveaway knives for several years. None of those knives were that great or that sharp and I hated trying to put an edge on them even though I'm pretty good at sharpening knives.

Essentially, knives are just sharpened pieces of steel that appear to be pretty simple, straightforward instruments that shouldn't be difficult to produce. But a little experience with some poor examples prove this to not be the case. Like most seemingly simple things, the simplicity is an illusion.

My experience has not been with kitchen knives but it has been with "working" knives. Pocket knives and fixed blade knives designed for hard use in the nasty jobs I have to do daily from removing staples in papers at the office to chopping down woody weeds in the backyard to cutting up boxes, rope, cording and thin pieces of aluminum. I know the value of a blade that can take a good edge and hold it through a lot of abuse.

I did a little research and found several brands of kitchen knives that had universal respect. Wusthof always was at or near the top of everyone's list. More often than not, it was number one in the reviews and surveys I came across.

My wife was a little apprehensive about the sharpness of the knives out of the box. She quickly realized the value of a really sharp kitchen knife and, in no time, she was commenting on how much easier it was to work with the Wusthof's than the cheapo knives she had been using. She has really been making good use of the paring knife and the chef's knife in the days since Christmas. My own limited use of the chef's knife from this set confirms how well it handles and cuts compared to the clunky Chicago Cutlery chef's knife.

After looking over more reviews, I've ordered the Wusthof 7" hollow edge santoku to go with this set. Designed for thin cuts, it will fit in well with the other knives. I'll probably also get a serrated edge bread knife in the not-too-distant future to round out the Wusthof set. This is likely to be a lifetime purchase for our household and that makes the high price more of an investment. I'm well pleased and so is my wife.

A sharp edge , the ability to hold it, and balance are truly worth the price.

01/05/13 Update Rating changed from five stars to three. All of the knife handles have cracked despite careful use and hand washing. This is unsanitary and inexcusable in an expensive culinary tool. The blades continue to provide a keen, long lasting edge.

Buy Wusthof Classic 4-Piece Cook's Cutlery Set Now

After doing lots of research, I decided to purchase this set of Wüsthof knives and am glad I did. I was concerned that the slicer and chef's knives might be short, but they are perfect! I actually like them better than my older longer knives because they are easier to control. I hadn't realized that my old knives were just a little too long for me all these years.

I like the balance on the knives and the handles feel good in my hand. The way the blade and handle come together on the knives is nice and smooth and much easier to clean than my old knives. My fingers feel protected. The blades are nice and sharp.

I am happy with my purchase!

Victorinox Stainless Steel 10 Inch Semi-Flex Blade Chef's Slicer Knife with Rosewood Handle

Victorinox Stainless Steel 10 Inch Semi-Flex Blade Chef's Slicer Knife with Rosewood HandleI bought this on the recommendation of my brother-in-law (an artisanal butcher and formerly sous chef at a Michelin star restaurant). He uses this as part of his daily butchering kit. Since good knives are a critical part of his trade, I trusted his advice and couldn't be happier with the decision.

For the last two years I have participated in small scale hog slaughter with friends and family. The Victorinox Forschner knives paired with a good steel (F. Dick Multicut) made a huge difference the second year; breaking and butchering 5 pigs in about half the time we butchered 4 pigs the year before. The flexibility is great for maneuvering around bones and executing a clean cut, even in novice hands.

The rosewood handle soaks up fat, preventing the handle from getting slick thus preventing dangerous situations. I was worried about the clean-up with the soaked up fat, but had no problems cleaning with soap and water. While fibrox may be slightly easier to clean, I'd rather spend an extra minute cleaning than hours in an Emergency Room waiting to get stitches from an accidental cut.

While you can find cheaper models out there, you'll be hard pressed to find a flexible blade that is as durable and holds an edge as well as this one.

Will gladly buy more Victorinox Forschner knives in the future.

I've got a little ding on one of the corners, which represents how soft the wood is since I've been quite careful with it. This is a beautiful cutting board; one that I keep out on the counter since it does look so nice.

I haven't had any contact with the manufacture nor have I needed to, but because of this I can't comment on customer service.

Overall, this thing seems like a steal when comparing other boards of similar sizes and thicknesses!

This 16" square extra thick cutting board lives up to my expectations. It is a nice end grain to keep your knives sharp. The only maintenance you have to be concerned about, (which will extend the life of your board), is oiling it once per month. You can use commercially available mineral spirits or olive oil.

Cuisinart 2-Piece Carving Knife Set

Cuisinart 2-Piece Carving Knife SetJust received this before Thanksgiving to carve the turkey and ham. The full tang (steel runs from blade through the handle) is nice plus and it feels very solid. The handle is a plastic material but has a solid grip and looks and feels like quality for the price. The edges of the steel through the handle has a slight edge to it and extends slightly beyond the width of the handle, but not enough to cut yourself on.

The fork is what I really bought this item for and it is very sturdy with thick and rigid tines that can easily man-handle a nine pound ham without fear of it bending and dropping your roast on the floor. The fork's finish is nicely polished and smooth.

The knife on the other hand, while also solidly constructed, is on the dull side. It had problems slicing through turkey breast on the bird, but is a good length overall. Up close, you can see that the blade is not entirely smooth, there are slight grooves perpendicular to the blade's edge that indicate heavy grinding. The blade's edge itself feels fairly sharp, it just doesn't do a great job slicing through meat.

Good for $20 or less, as a quality fork is much more than the price of the two combined, just don't expect a smooth cut from the knife
