Shun DMS284 Classic Knife Set, 2-Piece

These are probably the best and most useful knives I have ever bought. I have come around to realizing that I don't really need a big knife set, because in the end, I end up using the same two knives for 99% of everything. As it works out, for me, a good small chef's knife and a great utility knife fulfills all my needs.

I have been using these knives pretty much daily for close to a year now, and this has been my experience:

They are razor sharp even today.

I use them on wood and plastic cutting boards only.

I always immediately hand wash after use, wipe dry, and put them back in a wooden knife rack in my drawer right after using.

These are sharp sharp. Remember all of your safe knife handling rules, these won't give you a second chance. (Hasn't happened to me, but I came close, once.)

I haven't had a single rust spot on these knives.

I haven't had a single chip on the blades.

I don't cut bones with these... I have other, heavier, cheaper knives and if needed, a hacksaw, for that!

My experience with this set has matched up with my experience with my other Shun knives (I also have three others not from this set), carefully taken care of, these are a lifetime purchase. I haven't had to sharpen these yet, and it seems I probably won't have to for a while, but when I do, I plan to send them to Shun for sharpening.

These ARE a significant investment in knives, but I believe if you take the time to take care of them, you won't have to purchase another set of knives for life.

Form and function in one. When my knives are sharp as a Shun knife, it's sharp, like a razor. Perfect cutting tools.

It is a very well made knife. Stylish, sharp, motivating cutting...

But the wooden handle is not care-free~~~ I have to rinse the knife every time I used it and wipe it down with a dry kitchen towel, since nearly $200 for a nice knife is still not everyday purchase for me and I want to keep it neat for quite a few years.

Ultimately, these area a great set of knives that are extremely sharp and look very nice. However there are a few things that I think should be noted:

1.) You're paying a lot of money for knives that are mass produced. They are very nice, however they never really feel like "your" knives, because you know many other people have the same ones. For the amount of money you're spending on these knives, you're reaching a price range where you could buy knives from a custom knife maker, and then have knives that are truly YOURS.

2.) Because they are thin, extremely hard, and extremely sharp, they are somewhat fragile. I was cutting something with the chefs knife and accidentally knocked the paring knife off the counter, and the tip of the paring knife broke off. Luckily I was able to round the end by sanding with a water stone, so the knife still looks good, but it is something to keep in mind. Again, this is to be expected when you buy a knife of this quality, but its something that should be noted; these knives might not be for everyone.

Ultimately I really enjoy these knives and I use them often. I do catch myself looking at custom knife makers, and sometimes wishing I saved the money to ultimately go custom.

Farberware Professional Waiters Corkscrew, Stainless Steel

I love this corkscrew because it's small enough to carry in my pocket. I keep a spare in my car and almost always have one in my pocket when I am at social events.

The spiral has a sufficiently coarse pitch to quickly grab a cork and fully screw down in two and a half to three turns. The small form factor does not provide optimum leverage for removing corks, but a little adroit jiggling usually overcomes that problem. Besides, this is more of a portable convenience than a bar accessory.

I found the knife to be sufficient for slitting foil, but I recommend confining it to that use because heavier tasks could loosen it in the handle. Not a problem in my opinion, but I have observed folks who have attempted to use the blade as a small general purpose knife.

While I love the size, I also love the stainless steel finish. It's easy to keep clean and sanitary and it gives the corkscrew a professional, no-nonsense look. In that respect the aesthetics follow form because this is a no-nonsense tool that does one thing very well uncork wines with no pretentious adornment or inflated price.

I will never have to worry about subpar corkscrews again. This replaced an old cheapie leftover from times begone. I'll be buying several more to have around.

Nice wine opener. It is exactly that a wine opener; stainless steal and well built. Arrived when stated with no issues. Plan on using mine on my sailboat and need something tough to last in constant damp conditions. I recommend this for those that don't want to see rust and would like their opener to last for years to come.

Wusthof Wood Block and Steel

It's a shame when people rate products based on the defective example they received. Sure, consistency in workmanship is a consideration, but don't think bad things don't happen in transit.

That said, I really like this block. It is exactly what I needed and I couldn't beat the price (free with purchase of 3-peice starter set). And, it HOLDS MY 9-INCH BREADKNIFE, as well as the 3-peice starter set and steel. It came to me in great shape and feels solid. It's a lot heavier than I thought it would be. I plan to add kitchen shears and leave the other 3 slots open for knives I decide I need later.

The only thing missing is a place to put steak knives. You'll need a separate steak-knife block or a larger block to accommodate steak knives. I'm single and don't need many knives. I gave four stars instead of five for the small size that may not work for many people, and as stated above, the lack of space for steak knives.

This is the set (block and steel) that some stores offer for free when you purchase $100 or more worth of Wusthof products. I have not seen them for sale seperately anywhere else. It's a wood block that will be perfect to start a collection with. It's got the logo that will show off your Wusthof preference. It's a bit bulky and doesn't go up as much as it goes forward. If you have enough counter space this will be perfect, it takes quite a bit of space on my counter.

This quality 9-slot oak hardwood slant knife block made by Wüsthof is perfect for those of us who begin collecting Wüsthof knives one by one, rather than by purchasing a larger set that comes with a wooden block and steel. It holds the included 9-inch steel, plus slots for seven knives, and a kitchen scissors. I have three different Wüsthof knife blocks, including this one, and I keep them in different places around my kitchen. This block is for storing some of my more frequently-used Wüsthof Classic knives: 8-inch cook's knife, 8-inch bread knife, 6-inch sandwich knife, 5-inch tomato knife, 5-inch serrated utility knife, 3 1/2-inch paring knife, 2 3/4-inch 'bird's beak' peeling knife, and my kitchen scissors. The only drawback that I've found with this particular wood knife block is that it won't hold a cleaver, or some of the longer cook's, carving, and slicing knives, or carving fork. This is a good block, but I am quickly outgrowing it.

It fits a chef, slicer, bread knife and 4 smaller knives (paring, utility etc...). It also fits a steel and scissors which is nice.

The steel is great, and this is a great price.

The block itself is well made and attractive. It is made of pieces of wood glued together, but mine is done well.

It only has one slot for a chef's knife which is annoying because I have two.

I recommend this, but if you are like me, once you start buying Wusthof knives, you will want more and more.. thus, you may want a larger block.

Calphalon Contemporary 8-Inch Bread Knife

A bread knife is a specialized tool -you really can't use it for much other than cutting bread. It's tempting to purchase just any bread knife. But this is forged, rather than stamped, and the reduced flexing of the blade goes a long way towards making the slice the slice you wanted rather than what you happened to get. Functionally, this knife is beyond reproach. Even with crusty breads, the crumbs are minimized.

It does not use the traditional three-rivet handle -the handle is molded. But it is a full tang, and there's no reason to expect any loss in longevity.

I gave this four, rather than five, stars primarily on the basis of the appearance of the blade -but this is a matter of personal taste. Unlike knives used in the kitchen (where getting the job done is the job, and the appearance is not particularly important) a bread knife is likely to be used before guests. The utilitarian appearance of the blade is entirely appropriate to my tastes, however it may not appeal to those who expect a highly-polished appearance. Also (and this is visible from the photos) this bread knife does not have an offset handle, which may be awkward with large cutting boards.

This is absolutely the BEST knife I've ever used for cutting bread. Even when the bread is piping hot this knife glides right through it w/ease and doesn't even begin to squash or damage the loaf. I'm amazed how thin I can cut slices (when the bread is cool). It's a fab knife. Just be careful it cuts well for a reason! It's sharp as all heck! GREAT knife!

Cuisinart 10X Series Ceramic 2-Piece Set

This is the best value I could find for a ceramic paring knife and peeler. I originally bought this to cut limes for lime-aid or mix-drinks. I also cut vegetables for stir-fries but my steel knifes were not doing a good job on thin or delicate cuts. The claim on the packaging says this knife is 10x sharper that steel. Well, I don't know how that could be quantified, but it is significantly sharper and easier to cut fruits and vegetables. The increased sharpness makes it much easier to cut thin water chestnuts, tomatoes slices and lime wedges.

The only draw back is that there is no sheath for the paring knife or cover for the peeler. I would never recommend storing these super sharp utensils loose for 2 main reasons. You could easily cut yourself just brushing against the edges of these things. Second, because of the brittle nature of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2; also known as zirconia) the blade could easily be dulled chipped or break off. When I opened the plastic bubble pack I only cut the bottom and right side so I'll reuse the packaging to store them. I'm assuming this was a cost cutting decision by Cuisinart but it is something to consider if you have inquisitive children or no knife block like me.

I've seen warnings elsewhere against washing ceramic blades in a dishwasher. However the Cuisinart packaging says it's ok to wash on the top rack only. Again like being stored lose in a drawer I could see where it might bang against other utensils and dull, chip or break. But what if it was washed alone in a plastic cage?

Works better than expected--Could not choose a better knife. Really,really--WHY do you need SO MANY words for all your reviews?

The knife is absolutely beautiful, a great deal of care obviously goes into the workmanship of these knives.

It came wonderfully sharp. Most knives typically come with a "serviceable" edge, but I generally like mine with a very refined edge, this is the only knife I have ever purchased that I did not feel the need to sharpen right out of the box.

I like the heft of the knife. The weight of a knife really comes down to personal preference, but I feel this one has just enough heft that you can let the weight of the knife do the bulk of the work when slicing, but is still light enough that it doesn't feel cumbersome when making repetitious cuts.

The only "drawback" is that the knife is NOT stainless, so it requires a little extra care to ensure it remains in good condition. That said the knife came with care instructions for people who may not know how to care for a non-stainless knife.

grapefruit spoon set

These spoons work really well for digging into grapefruit. I wouldn't say they're anything close to fine silverware, but they are pretty sturdy and I can see them lasting a long time.

For roughly $4, these spoons are a good deal. However, they were slightly flimsier than I expected, for lack of a better description. They feel kind of thin and light. However, they allow you to easily eat grapefruit, which is really all that matters. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

Pastry and Dough Cutter with Comfort Grip

This is a horrible pastry cutter. It broke the first time I used it. The good thing is Amazon refunded me no problem, but it really is trash. It could serve no use other than, possibly, as a passive aggressive way to infuriate or insult any chefs in your life.

When I received the pastry and dough cutter it looked sturdy. I used it once and it broke. Very poor constuction.

Eco-friendly, Totally Bamboo and Durable 3 Piece Bamboo Cutting Board Set

I really like these cutting boards. They aren't getting 5 stars because the sides did have a few cracks but they appear to have been filled with some kind of glue or something to keep them from getting worse. I don't think it will lessen the integrity of the boards. They look nice, don't move around too much when I'm using them, and do exactly what I need them to do be a surface to cut things on.

Cool looking cutting boards but all three came with splits in them. The medium one was split in 2 places on one side and badly on the outer edge. thankfuly all 3 were split on only one side so i decided to just keep them as they were only $25 anyway! if you are expecting great quality cutting boards these probably aren't them unless i was just lucky to get the one bad set (which i doubt). kinda have a funny scent too but i've never owned bamboo cutting boards before so it may just be characteristic of the type? hope this helps someone!

OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer

I have had the WORST luck with wire cheese slicers , regardless of whether they were purchased at the grocery store or gourmet cooking shop. I actually had a $20.00 slicer fall apart with its very first use. I just bought this one a month ago, and though its longevity has yet to be proven, I just had to slice a TON of cheese for a large family Christmas party of 30 people, and was SO glad I bought this when I did! I love the grippy handle, and it made relatively quick work of 6 Sam's Club size blocks of cheese. It worked well on cheddar, monterey jack, colby, colby jack and mozerella. It has a nice weight and feel, and if it's as good as the rest of the Good Grips line, I expect it to last for a very long time.

I was very disappointed with this cheese slicer--the wire broke after about the fourth use. I have always had good experiences with Oxo and was very surprised.

I should have checked out other reviews because Oxo makes another item almost identical to this that has more bad reviews than you can shake a stick at. I bought this to replace another wire cheese slicer I got in a supermarket years ago that was starting to show its' age. I'm glad I didn't throw it away when this came, because I'm back to using it after about a week. Like all Oxo products I've had this looked and felt great, and like all of them it worked great as well...at first. Unfortunately, like a few Oxo products, this was not very well built. The design, ergonomics and function were all first class, but it broke after about a week. The wire snapped out and there is no way to replace it. Some of the better wire slicers have screws in the handle to allow the user to replace broken or loose wires, some even come with replacement wires, but not this one. I'm really dissapointed because Oxo makes some really wonderful products, but they also turn out a real turkey every now and then and this is one of them. Don't buy it!

New Alaska Ulu Chopping Bowl Board

I'm new to Ulu's, I love them. I like them because I can chop food to the right size, unlike, my food processer's chopper that minces everything. This cutting board is well made, and the bowls curve is slightly larger the my 6in. Ulu blade. I'm hoping to prolong its life, so, I coat it regularly with Olive oil.

This chopping bowl is the perfect companion for the ulu. I have not used my ulu much simply because it has limited utility on a flat board. The bowl shape of this chopping surface makes the knife much more utilitarian.
