This silverware is very nice. The pieces weight a little less than I thought they would, however weight alone is not the determining factor when considering quality. This is a great mug, stylish, sleek, and spare. I agree that there's less function than form, as the handle is small and sometimes my knuckles come into contact with the hot sides. That said, I tend to hold coffee mugs in my palms, so it's not such an issue for me. If you have big hands or knuckles, you might want to keep this mug's ergonomics in mind, but I still think this is a beautiful mug that deserves its award. And I am also quite pleased to be able to buy something made in Germany, so I just reordered one more.This cup is very elegant but it is really hard to hold. If you're a righty, it tilts left unless you put a lot of pressure on your thumb against the told part of the handle. Also, in order to hold it, you have to slide your 3rd and 4th fingers through the holder but it ends up touching the cup, which may be hot from coffee or tea. Rosenthal Loft (by Thomas) mugs come in two sizes: the smaller (9 ounces), which comes as part of the 16-piece service for 4, and the larger (13 ounces), available as open stock from several vendors. The trouble is, many sites don't tell prospective buyers which size they're looking at, pricing, and possibly buying. Nine-ounce mugs are useless for serving or drinking in our house; I'll keep them, but only for scrambling eggs or, for example, mixing small quantities of tartar sauce. The 13-ounce size mugs are, like the 9-ounce mugs, lovely to look at -but as another reviewer has said, difficult to hold without putting some part of your hand into direct contact with the hot wall of the cup.I love my set, which I assembled from one 16-piece service for 4 and many other pieces we are more likely to use every day -bread and butter plates, for example, and plenty of salad plates for serving sandwiches and such. The pattern is lovely, but under some light will give an impression of grayness (from the micro-miniature shadows, I suppose, cast by the tiny ridges of the design.
If you find plain white dinnerware boring, but patterns annoying to live with as time passes, Rosenthal's Loft is a lovely, high-quality, affordable compromise. Played against strong colors (in the food or table linens), in a suitably lit room, it's just spectacular. Don't be surprised if you should discover your guests turning it over to see who made it; personally, I find the Rosenthal name and the words "Made in Germany" comforting.

Chicago Cutlery Essentials 2-piece Set: 5" Partoku Knife, 7" Santoku Knife
I have owned a Santoku knife for quite a few years. In my opinion it is the best, most versatile design in a knife thats available. They can either be used as a cutting, slicing knife for preparing your veggies, or as a small cleaver for the thicker cuts. I really don't know what the indents on the side of the knife are for, but they all seem to have them. I am sure there is a good reason for them, I just don't know what it is. Like just about everything else you can buy, these knives come in a wide array of prices and promises as for being called the very best. What I wanted for a second set was something that was quality made and would stay sharp, without spending the price of a new microwave. My old knife is a Chicago Cutlery, and it is a full tang very thick blade of good quality and a comfortable handle. I pretty much chose this set based on my old knife. When they arrived they had the very same blade design and insignia, but were definitely thinner than my old knife. Full tang, (meaning the knife extends all the way through the handle), but the blade was a good one third thinner than my other knife. Despite this difference, I still consider both knives to be well worth the price for the average home chef or homemaker. They arrived extremely sharp and can easily be made to stay that way with just a simple sharpening device. I would have to say that despite these being a definite cheaper version of my original knife, they carry an edge like nothing I have ever owned before. They are almost dangerous to use. Be careful and don't make any slip ups when using them. And one other thing, the larger knife is quite a bit thicker than the smaller one, but I feel you will have much more use for the 5 inch. Its just not that often you will need a 7 inch slicer/cleaver unless you cut a lot of big pieces of meat or anything else tough. If you feel the need to just own one of these knives, I would suggest the smaller ones available. However together these make a nice set that can handle just about anything your kitchen can offer up.In conclusion, you can definitely buy better knives for a lot more money. But unless you do a lot of cooking every day for a large number of people, these knives are a very decent price, quality made, and as noted before, carry and sharpen to a superior edge. Highly recommended for the everyday homemaker on a budget..Chicago cutlery makes thee best kitchen knifes [in my opinion]. I had a pair of these from 1993 and one day i was just cutting and the blade broke. I sent the company a e mail and told them that i originaly bought these in a 2 pack and within a week, i received a brand new pair of the same-no questions asked. This flatware set is shown in a nice display box, but when it came it was just loose inside a cardboard box on some ripped up tissue paper! The pieces have smudges, fingerprints, and scratches all over them. We ordered this for a baby shower gift but there's no way I can give it to someone in this kind of shape. I'm extremely disappointed!Tossed in a brown box with all the piece lose banging up against each other. As bad as that was I was SHOCKED and angry to read that the peices are actually made in Mexico and not the USA!!!! You have to read the very light stamping on the back of each pieces. Like the previous reviewer, my flatware arrived in a plain, white cardboard box with all pieces in individual plastic sleeves all wrapped in tissue paper.I ordered this knowing that mine may not arrive in the gift box shown in the product listing so I am OK with this. The flatware is for my kids, not a gift.
The pieces are nice. No scratches on mine and the finish seems good on all pieces. I am adding a photo above so that you can see the sizes of the pieces in relation to common kids flatware.
My daughter had been using the blue Gerber fork shown since about 20 months without any trouble. She is now 3, so I just wanted some 'real' flatware for her since our salad forks are still a bit big. The Ginko Panda child's fork is a bit narrower and the tines are longer than what she is used to.
The baby spoon is a bit smaller than a 'standard' Gerber rubber coated spoon and the toddler spoon is just a tiny bit bigger than it, but they are almost the same. In my opinion, the 'baby and toddler' set Ginkgo Panda-Babies Made in the USA 3-Piece Baby & Toddler Flatware Set is just a baby set and the 'child' set Ginkgo Panda-Babies Made in the USA 3-Piece Child Flatware Set is a toddler set.

The design and functionality of this knife is top notch, I really like it. On Thanksgiving everyone envied it; they loved the blade-cover concept because it travels well (which we all did for the holiday and were cooking together) and stores well. However, even though everyone knows that ceramic is fragile, the next day (the second time I was using it) the tip broke right off. It is a shame but the bigger shame is that I contacted the manufacturer TWICE to find out if there is a repair warranty and NEVER got a reply. I would pay to sharpen the tip! Knife sharpening businesses will not handle ceramic blades, I tried. I was told that if my knife was manufactured by Kyosera, they would repair it.I looked it up: Kyosera stands behind their ceramic knives and offers FREE repairs because they know these types of knives have their limits and people want to keep them for life. Even though I wasn't expecting Mastrad to replace my brand-new knife (I purchased it only a week prior), I thought they would at least reply or somehow stand by their customer.
Think more than twice before investing in any Mastrad product and as wonderfully sharp as ceramic blades are, buy from a company that understands that sometimes they need repair like Kyosera.I saw this knife in a flyer for the home show and thought it looked pretty cool, and wanted to try it out.
I was always interested in trying out a ceramic knife, and this is my first one.
I like the idea that the blade folds/gets covered. I think the quality of the knife is a little bit lacking though. The handle has some wear / rough spots where the hinge / friction hold open thing is. (like imagine too big of a pin going into a small opening, causing wear on the area around the hole).
The packaging for this was overkill. It has a fancy magnetic box, and I do not see the purpose of that. Would rather see it in a clamshell and have the price a bit less.
Closing the blade is a little scary. Like it seems like it would be easy to slip then trying to close it. It is hard to initially get the blade to close, and there is really no good way to get a grip between the rubber handle and the hard plastic handle.
Also it does seem like it is meant to be open, more than it is to be closed. I thought it would be a nice knife to take on a picnic and put in a bag, but I do not feel it is fully secure when it is closed.
Lastly the blade itself seems pretty sharp, but not what I was expecting. I have a Shun paring knife that was crazy sharp when I got it. This one just seems sharp. So so far I am not too impressed with the ceramic aspect of the blade.
One thing I would add would be some metal somewhere in the handle so I could stick it to a magnetic knife rack while it is closed.
Not sure if I would recommend it or not at this stage. I think there are better options as far as cheap paring knives, and if you want something for a picnic or camping I would go with Kuhn Rikon Instead.Kuhn Rikon 4-Inch Nonstick Colori Paring Knife, Red

If you want a knife that never needs sharpening DON'T BUY THIS ONE.I got this knife in the mail today, and I was somewhat disappointed in two ways.
#1. I guess I did not understand from the pictures how this knife folded. I expected the blade to fold into the handle, much like a pocket knife, not the handle to fold up over the blade. I like that it protects the blade, but I expected this to be more of a space saving pocket friendly design.
#2. (and this is far worse than #1 in my opinion)
This is my first ceramic knife. I have been intrigued by them but have never bought one. I have a nice set of sharpening stones and can hone steel blades as sharp as a scalpel. Ceramic knives can't be sharpened the same way, but I thought "hey, it might be nice to have a knife I don't have to maintain." The flaw in my thinking is that this knife really isn't very sharp. It will not shave the hairs from my arm, and will just barely slice thru the skin of a tomato(you have to saw a little). This is the point at which I consider my steel knives to need a sharpening. I could have a perpetually dull knife just by not sharpening my existing knives, I certainly didn't need to purchase one that comes dull from the factory and stays dull forever. A serrated knife would be a better purchase.This is a very well made little knife that slices veggies and the like with ease. The folding part is a bonus as it will protect the sometimes delicate ceramic blade. I love ceramic knives and don't plan on using anything else but they do have a drawback of the tip chipping off if you're not careful. With this there is less risk of that since the blade folds into the handle. I would recommend.

It is a snap to slice bread with these knives. I use it to make Bruschetta on a frequent basis. Very sharp.Wonderful knife, the Wusthof Classic Ikon are excellent knives. I usually get a Creme handle bread knife for a set of regular knives so that the bread knife is easy to find. I have purchased several for myself and as gifts. I find the German knives are the best for gifts as opposed to the Japanese knives as the German are heavier and less delicate, slightly less brittle metal, easier to resharpen, hold up much better and will not rust when left wet. The damascus folded metal Japanese knives will slowly develop small rust spots over time as it is imposable to maintain perfect formulation and consistency of stainless steel alloys when doing the folding. The Japanese knives are unique and the more expensive brands are beautiful and truly excellent if cared for carefully however they are brittle and prone to tiny chips in the cutting edge and the mentioned rusting if not dried after use. Leaving them in the sink wet is totally unacceptable where the German knives will generally be OK. The best knife I have is a Japanese folded metal $240 for one knife, but the best overall and by far the best for gifts are German especially the Wusthof Classic Ikon. Wusthof makes outstanding knives. No question. But from online images at Wusthof and here, I thought these particular knives--the Classic Ikon Creme--would be a lovely addition to my kitchen. I liked the cream-colored look so much more than the standard black (or stainless) so ordered three of them: the bread knife, the paring knife, and the chef's knife.I was unpleasantly surprised when they arrived to see that the handles (not the blades) appeared "dollar store" cheap. They had very little weight to them and actually gave the appearance of being cheap plastic. I was initially astonished, then dismayed, then bitterly disappointed. I have no doubt that the knives themselves are of excellent quality. Wusthof is known for that. But I was so disappointed with the look and feel of the handles that I didn't even bother to try them out. I re-wrapped them within a half-hour of receiving them and notified Amazon that I wanted to return them.
It's a shame really. I would have been proud to have a set of Wusthof knives in my kitchen. Probably another of their collections would have more than satisfied me, but I ended up going with the recommendations from ATK and got knives that are not only better looking and of equal quality but were much less expensive.
Wusthof has a good reputation for quality. And it has some lovely knives. What a shame this Classic Ikon Creme is not among them.

Nice knife for presentation. Does the job though it is not especially sharp, I found I still needed to push down harder than I thought I might need to slice. But would still recommend it.It should have been a lot larger. Hard to get two hands on it. They must make small cheese blocks in Holland. At least it is not made in Communist China. Dexter-Russell Cook's Style Parer, 3-1/4" Blade
i was tired of my henckel paring knife. no matter how often i honed or sharpened it (on a whet stone) it did not cut well. it was actually a nighmare to use it. i still have it and i hate it.i watched a show on TV and they were talking about dexter-russel company. they showed the knives used in a butcher shop, so i thought "if they are using them, it should be good for me too".
so, before i bought it from amazon, i happened to find a local restaurant supply store that carried it. better yet, the local store sells them for $4 each.
i bought 2, gave one for my mom and i kept one.
i really like it. it's sharp, i have had it for 2 months now.
the only issue i have with it that the handle does not "tell" you which side the blade is pointing towards. i have found myself trying to cut something and when i look down, i am cutting with the "wrong" side. Essentially, without looking at the knife, i could be using the spine side without even knowing it.
but that's a minor issue. i'd get another one simply because it's so cheap. and so far, it works great!!When I worked at a restaurant, all our knives were Dexter-Russell knives and they worked well day in and day out. I got sick of dealing with paring knives that never seemed to stay sharp for very long and decided to see if one of these works as well as I remembered it from a decade ago. For less than ten dollars, this knife has been great. The plastic grip is comfortable and works pretty well even when wet. It has kept its edge very well, it's easy to clean and it is extremely functional. I'll leave my Henkel in the knife block because it matches my other knives, but this is the one that I'm going to pull out to use when I actually need a reliable knife for something more than cutting a sandwich.
While I'm sure there are better paring knives out there, for the price, it's definitely a five star purchase.

Great knife set, reasonable price, sharp out of the box, well made, fit in a standard knife block. The only thing about these that i don't like is that the edge is not serrated, other than that they are perfect. Oh, and they are hand wash only if you want the edge to last, but any decent knife is hand wash only anyway so nothing new there. Note to KitchenAid: I hated the impossible to open hard shrink wrapped plastic box and sliced my finger open, not on the knives inside, but the sharp edge on the plastic trying to get the knives out. The knives are very nice, I was actually surprised at how sharp they were right out of the box. They are well priced for what they are. Unfortunately I decided to test my luck and put them in the dishwasher once, I was shocked at how many rust spots appeared just after the first use. When I soak these knives along with other steak or paring knives in soapy water, these start to show rust spots fairly easily, while my other knives rarely do that. I'm not sure if it's due to the quality/composition of the stainless steel (chromium content), or if is because my other knives have a more polished finish on them. I definitely appear to be in the minority when I say I do not like the way this knife performs. This is the fourth electric knife I've owned over the past 30 years and by far the worst.I don't have any "Pros" about this knife
Cons:
1) The 7-1/2 inch blade (the actual length with serrated edges) wasn't long enough to adequately cut through a large turkey.
2) The handle is not designed well. It is heavy and just does not fit well in the hand. I found that as I was cutting, my hand quickly got tired but the way the handle and the "on" button are designed it was very difficult to change my hand position. It would have helped if the on button could be locked to the "on" position.
3) While cutting the turkey the blades kept bending. The knife failed miserably cutting through the joints. The blades are definitely the flimsiest of any of the electric knives I've owned.
The primary reason I purchased the knife was to cut turkeys, oven roaster chickens, etc. I'm sure the knife would do well cutting bread or soft meats such as a salami, but I have STRONG doubts it could handle slicing a hard piece of beef such as a cold cooked brisket (the secondary reason I bought the knife).
I'm going to check on the return policy about getting my money back. This is one of the few purchases from Amazon.com that I've made since Amazon first came online, that I have wanted to return.My fiance and I realized we can save a lot of money if we make our own sandwich meats. We tried before cutting the pieces by hand, but it just didn't work very well. This electric knife is exactly what I expected and we're able to cut slices of an appropriate thickness for sandwiches. It did take a little while to get here, but my patience paid off and it arrived the same night we intended to cook our next roast! It's not even as loud as the electric knife my parents own.

I love Chicago Cutlery's Landmark series. The knives are extremely sharp, and rarely need sharpening. I have an entire set of the wooden handled, original Chicago Cutlery knives, which were never even close to this sharp, even though I thought they were OK (I didn't know what I was missing)! These are exceptional, as is the price for this kind of quality. The black and silver look is elegant. I own the 5-inch slicer, 8-inch slicer and chef's knife, and bought the larger knives because the 5-inch slicer had become my main utility knife that I used for almost everything unless it required a parer. Highly recommended.I have owned this knife for 4 or 5 years now. It is a wonderful addition to the kitchen. Previously I had a semblance of a chef knife that was part of a set we received as a wedding present. As I started cooking more seriously a proper knife for the work was needed.Having worked a bit in a couple of industrial kitchens and learned a few things from the chefs and my own methods of trial and error here's the short list:
First, the knife handle has to be comfortable, balance is important, but so is the shape of the handle. Many knives out there have blocked handles, which are squared off and after cutting/chopping for a while they tend to be uncomfortable in the hand. Believe it. We chopped and cut a lot of veggies and if the handle is rounded and ergonomic it really does make a difference.
Secondly, 12 inch vs 8 inch blades...the knife has to be easy to work with. I have tried 12 inch knives and they were too long. I have a 12 inch poly handle which is now used to cut pizza; it is just too cumbersome to effectively manage on the cutting board. The 8 inch model is perfect for me and something that everyone should at least try. Now a 12 inch knife delivers good results cutting up bulk material but... the blades on 12 inch knives are usually thinner to keep the weight manageable and the length of the 12 inches does not lend itself to the cutting boards that are generally sold. The 8 inch Chicago Landmark has a good weight which is desirable and actually safer as you use as the weight to drive the blade and not physical force. If you have to use force or bear down on the knife to make the cut, you are asking for an accident to happen. Weighty, stout blades are safer! Believe it.
Third, the cost. This knife is very affordable. After making my collection of Chicago Landmark's I almost scoff at those "premium" knives that are over One Hundred Dollars. I don't think they're worth it, paying for the signature name usually drives the cost beyond affordable.
Fourth, and this is a safety warning. Have good lighting, a good poly cutting board, concentrate on what you are doing, get rid of distractions like kids running around, or watching TV, or jiving to the tunes on the radio, AND WEAR SHOES. These knives are SHARP, if you are not paying attention you WILL cut yourself in a split second. Drop the blade on an exposed foot and you are going to draw blood. I cannot stress this enough, culinary arts textbooks talk about it, and the pros know all about this and exercise caution around kitchen tools.
Fifth, buy a quality "steel" to keep the edge up; at least 14 inches with a hand guard. This are not sharpeners, the steel is used to take the "roundness" out of the edge. As you cut the edge rounds out a bit; steel brings the edge back into shape. And I would not recommend a miracle knife sharpener, use a stone or diamond flat and work the blade correctly. Consult a Gisslen textbook or some other text that will show you how to put that knife edge back into proper form. To be perfectly honest, I have stoned my Landmark 8 inch only once in the 4 or 5 years I have been using it. I use the steel almost anytime the knife comes out.

BTW I know a few really good cooks out there who have spent some time in the industrial side of the business and have switched to this particular knife after using mine. They are wonderful, dishwasher safe, durable, and hold a good edge.

This knife is the ONLY knife I need in the kitchen. It's not so big that I ever want to use a smaller one. It stays sharp for a long time, in this house in a busy week I have to sharpen it weekly. But that is the equivalent of about 3-4 solid hours chopping & cutting with it! It cuts right through frozen foods (bananas, steaks, chicken), fresh vegetables & fruits, I use it to slice pizzas, and for just about EVERYTHING including butchering & piecing whole chickens. It's excellent for free-hand drawing of lines in pastry dough because it is light and precise with a thin grip. Because of the grip design it cleans SO easily I have no worries about debris being stuck in the hilt, it's smooth and sleep and still has a good grip. The weight is heavy enough to work with you making your cutting easier but not too heavy to wear out your wrist with long chopping sessions.I've been using this for 2 years now, it has a special place in my cutting board drawer to protect it. I have been writing a cookbook for almost a year now, and have put in hundreds of hours chopping, cutting, dicing and all sorts of smither-eening with this knife and I certainly can't live without it! I feel it's as good as the first day I got it still and look forward to many years to go.

I decided we needed a set of knives since all we had previously were assorted cheap-y, dull knives. I decided on these and I'm so glad I bought them! They're sharp, and have stayed sharp. I like that they're made in America and the small knife block is perfect for our limited counter space. Two of them did make it into the dishwasher (oops!) and the handles turned a darker grey, but they are fine other than that. We think some steel wool will get them back to their former state. I'd definitely recommend getting these if you're in the market for affordable, sharp knives.
