Mundial 5610-8 Cook's Knife 8"

Mundial 5610-8 8-Inch Cook's Knife, BlackThis is really a knife every serious chief should know about. I have one and love it. I use it to "protect" my nice knives from edge destroying jobs & have given a number of them as gifts to people for primary knife in second homes.

It performs better than many knives three times its price (although it's clearly inferior to any number of much more expensive finer forged blades). It is very tough. It is also VERY large: the blade is tall, the handle is thick, the bolsters are huge. If you normally use a 10" I'd advise downsizing to the 8".

If you told me tomorrow that my primary knife had to cost $100 or less this would be my choice.

A supplier gave my wife's restaurant the 8" chef's knife 25 years ago. Someone managed to break the handle in half (back to front) some years later. Even so it's remained the favorite knife, out of dozens of others, of everyone in the kitchen. I bought a new (complete) one for my wife and she won't tell the other kitchen people that she has it. It's light and has perfect balance. I'm only speaking for women food preparers but this knife is very apparently IT!

This knife is great. It's very sharp and reliable. I use it for everything! You really can't get anything better for the price. I have a handful of Ikea knives that are only 2 years old and I can't keep them sharp. It will be interesting to see if this one keeps its edge over time.

So far I'm very happy with the knife especially for the price!!

After reading about this knife in Bon Appetit Magazine under the "Best Knives Under $100.00" I thought its worth a try for $20. I first bought on of these 3 years ago and was blown away by how smooth it cuts and how light it is in the hand. Way better then any $100.00 knife I have used. 3 years later and using this knife everyday, I still am impressed with how the edge has held up on this knife. I have never sharpened it and only hone it about once a week.

The blade is a great size for any level cook and the high handle keeps your knuckles from slamming on the cutting board. This is a must have for every home. Once you use a knife that works for you instead of against you, it will change your life! (Well in the kitchen at least)

I've owned a lot of knives over the years, some very good but quite expensive. Recently I needed a new knife but did not want to spend much. Bssed on the reviews and my previous experience with Mundial Futura knives (a higher end line of knives) I decided on this one and it has exceeded my expectations. I especially love the wide blade which leaves plenty of room for anybody's knuckles and makes scooping up the chopped bits and transporting them very easy. It is a stamped blade, resulting in a lighter weight knife but that;s fine. Stamped blades used to be considered inferior to forged blades but newer technology has made them much better. The plastic handle is comfortable. I use an inexpensive ceramic knife sharpener Lansky 8" Ceramic Sharp Stick to keep the edge sharp. Try it, you'll like it!

Chroma Haiku 10-Inch Carving knife

Chroma Haiku 10-Inch Carving knifeI recently picked up this carving knife and have used it for a week now.

First off, the price paid for this knife was $44 and in the world of "You get what you pay for" I would not have even considered making this purchase; I got it anyway.

The balance of the knife is very blade heavy. Overall it is a light knife, but it is not well balanced and is tiresome after a long day. The handle is extremely light and lacks enough weight to balance the knife. I therefore assume this is only a half tang design.

The fit and finish on this blade is bad. The handle is oversized and bulky. Semi-ambidextrious handle favoring the left hand slightly more. (I'm right handed)

The blade was very dull out of the box.

The blade is stamped Made In Japan so I assume this is true (although there is a Chroma Haiku China which may be a knockoff?) The blade shape is good, slender and food doesn't stick to it; excellent texture. The blade thickness is a bit wide, but a good trade off given the superior blade stiffness. The soft metal is easy to sharpen and frequent sharpening is required.

It arrived 1 day early and have been satisfied with it so far. I am definitely going to replace this one with another I have my eye on once it goes on sale.~$200 range.

The Haiku is not up to par to do delicate work that requires feeling the blade. However, I find that for $44 it is good insurance for your nice gear. I use it as a eveyday beater knife that i can throw around the kitchen and not worry about rust or chips on the blade.

If you are a hobby cook this may work for you. Definitely not professional caliber.

2 stars.

***UPDATE***

The furrle has come loose and mekugi *sp? (wooden pin in the furrle) has fallen out. The plastic furrele could be repaired with some epoxy... the mekugi has no real function at 3mm in length. The handle is still firmly attached to the blade and this is mostly a cosmetic issue. None the less this is still a mediocre purchase at best and probably wouldn't recommend this line to anyone especially for $90. Take that kind of money and buy a Fujiwara and never look back!

Good Luck!

LEM Products #10 Stainless Steel Clamp-on Hand Grinder

LEM Products #10 Stainless Steel Clamp-on Hand GrinderBuyer beware this item does not have stainless steel blades or plates. The cutting knife had rust on it right out of the box and the plates are shipped in small baggies with plenty of oil covering them (stainless steel does not require packaging in oil). The appearance of the grinder itself is quite nice, much nicer than the typical cast-iron models that you normally see, but that's about where my positive experience stopped.

Second major issue with this item: I have a 1.5" thick counter top, and the clamp would not open wide enough to mount. If you remove the rubber feet (which, in my case were white slip-on feet unlike the black shown in the picture) and the cylindrical plastic piece that covers the bottom of the clamp, you might be able to mount it. I would say that this item would mount nicely to a counter with a thickness of 1.25". If you don't care about your counter finish, you can mount it on 1.5" but you will need to remove all of the rubber / plastic from the grinder that keeps your counter protected.

Third, and probably the biggest issue, is that the cutting knife, which needs to come into contact with the plates, does not ride on the plate smoothly. I don't know if this was due to the threads being off or the blade mount being machined incorrectly, but the bottom line is that the knife was not in constant contact with the plate (which is needed to get a good grind).

Put my husband right to work making sausage! He had a great time experimenting. No complaints with product; but, he discovered that if you are going to grind chicken, use the larger holed plate. Chicken was mush with the smaller holes!

I read the reviews of other grinders and decided that his one was the most sturdy-no plastic parts or electric gizmos to fail.

It was easy to use and turned the roast into ground beef in record time and at a nice saving. Next time, I will make the coarser grind, but there will be lots of next times.

I got so tired of paying steak prices for decent ground beef, and those tubes of ground something scare me. Who knows where they came from.

I figured my price for lean ground beef at about $3.69 per pound. Knowing when and where it was ground, gives me the confidence to serve it medium rare if I wish.

This grinder is never going to break.

Excellent grinder. It's just like the meat grinder my grandmother brought over from the the old country. She has had hers forever! It works just like it. Great buy and worth every penny. The grinder and plates are all stainless steel, very important. This grinder will out live me and can passed down through the generations.

Want LEM Products #10 Stainless Steel Clamp-on Hand Grinder Discount?

The blade has to be turned out to rub against the plate otherwise it won't cut the meat and you will have mush. I wish it had a larger opening thread on the auger like their bigger models have. It's still a nice machine.

Wusthof Culinar Cheese Knife

Wusthof Culinar 2-1/2-Inch Parmesan Cheese KnifeI received this knife last christmas and immediately fell in love with it. It's heavy for it's size, feels great in your hand, and just looks really cool. It also cuts great. Cheddars and Swiss don't stand a chance, as well as peppers, boneless meats, tomatos, and anything you can think of that doesn't need a really stout, heavy blade. The holes in the blade make any meat or cheese just slide off as soon as the cut is made. It's just a quality piece of cutlery. Now if only you can get someone to buy one for you.....

I purchased this soft cheese knife 5 years ago. I love both how it looks and how it feels in my hand. I use it several times a year. It has remained sharp and still cuts well. The way it cuts soft cheese is a dream. The knife doesn't bunch up the cheese and have to be worked loose like other knives.

This cheese knife has held up well. It still looks great, good enough to put on a cheese tray for company. I've kept this knife in a drawer with the rest of my knives. I do wash it by hand, not in the dishwasher. Otherwise, I've taken no special care of it. I expect this knife to meet my needs for a very long time.

I've had similar experiences with any Wüsthof product that I have purchased.

Misono Swedish Carbon Steel Sujihiki 9.4'(24cm) - RightFor starters, it has a dragon on it. It came out of the box very sharp. I work in a kitchen, and it is my "go to knife". It has just enough knuckle clearance to chop with. A slicer that dices, how cool is that?(sujihiki means slicer.) This knife will rust, so keep it dry. Misono also has stainless steel knives, if you don't want to deal with the carbon steel. Did I tell you that it has a dragon on it?

Victorinox 46892 Fibrox 3-Piece Chef's Knife Set

Victorinox 46892 Fibrox 3-Piece Chef's Knife SetAfter searching stores looking for a knife set I began researching online. I found this set and was a bit reluctant. They didn't come with a knife block, they didn't have wooden handles, and the brand wasn't ringing a bell. But they were rated so highly, and the comments so positive, I decided to take a chance. They are AMAZING! Manufactured by the company that makes Swiss Army Knives, they are beautifully made. These three knives will do virtually anything you need done in the kitchen, so you don't really need more knives. They have excellent weight, good balance, and the grip feels ergonomic. While priced at the low end for good knives, you feel you are using the Mercedes of knives. This is a great set for anyone who loves cooking or quality. And as an aside, I was happy to have to find an alternative to the knife block. I got a strip magnet, and it is so much better!

I just purchased this knife set for my son for Christmas, after reading good reviews. The knives have met all my expectations so far. They are very sharp, and the fibrox handles are substantial, non-slip, and comfortatble. The first test was 4 butternut squash my son volunteered to peel and cut up for Christmas dinner. Cutting hard squash is a task I don't look forward to, but the paring knife did the peeling, and the chef's knife did the chopping, with no problem. I then borrowed the paring knife to cut up an onion, and was amazed at how easily it went through the onion compared to the Chicago Cutlery I've used for years. For less than $50, I'm ready to buy another set for myself!

R.H. Forschner by Victorinox 3-Piece Fibrox Chef's Set, Molded Handles.

I just got mine and love 'em! I've been through a few bargain knives; most recently low-end Henkles; the blades were thin, badly sized, and didn't stay sharp long. I expected a little better but was pleasantly surprised! The look of them is professional but basic, not a showy knife, but they are much better than anything I've seen retail at comparable prices. They're an excellent weight and above par materials. I used all three knives immediately and they performed extremely well. The handles fit the hand comfortably and knuckles never knock the cutting board. The material of the handles is excellent. When cooking, my hands are damp but my grip stayed secure. Vegetables practically slid apart and the slicing knife cut bread with no tearing. I have never found knives at this price point that are this quality. The 10" chef's knife in the three piece set is bigger than might be necessary in many homes, but it's fine for me and a minor complaint. Besides, although substantial, it's not as heavy as a forged knife would be and that's a good thing. I couldn't have gotten the desired pieces individually at this price so I have no complaints except that I wish the line was available locally!

Update: 08/08-Four Months later and few complaints. The blades have dulled a bit, but work well. They remain straight, even and manage most jobs well. I'm looking for a proper sharpener. I did find the knives locally at The Cook's Warehouse and picked up the 8" chef's knife there. Good knife too!

Update 09/15/2010 The often used chefs knife has not survived. It wasn't possible to keep it sharp and the cutting edge got notched. (Hand washed, kept the blade from other objects and surfaces other than the cutting board etc, etc. Who knows, bones or seeds I guess.) It last served to dig out the epoxy from a sink I had to replace and will land in the garbage. I got two years from it. I'm not a fan of things like this being disposable. It's a waste of money and resources. I'm going to try to find a life long knife next time. Dealing with a dull knife then replacing every couple of years just isn't efficient.

I purchased these with the need for affordable knives, and I saw the perfect review score for this set on Amazon (18/18 reviews at 5 stars). I figured I couldn't go wrong.

I didn't.

Obviously the most important trait of a knife is how sharp it is. These are simply the sharpest knives I have ever used. I've used cheap ones that cheat and use a serration to achieve sharpness, and I've used pricier Henkels and similar. A sharper knife is actually a safer knife, since your cuts will be precise. A duller knife won't cut where you expect and can cause injuries that way. To give an idea of how sharp these are, I was able to easily slice a bagel without using a saw motion at all. Not impressed? I did the same with a ripe tomato. Yes, slicing a tomato with just pressing down. I'd never been able to do that with the Henkels even after a fresh sharpening. These knives have made so many kitchen tasks so much easier.

What's even better is that for the price of that Henkels chef knife, you get 3 of the most useful knives to have in the kitchen. This price is simply amazing for what you get.

Well, nothing is perfect and unfortunately these knives are no exception. After being used to the Henkels chef knife, this Forschner was startlingly lightweight. I know that over time I will adjust for it, but I would have liked more weight I suppose. I would just suggest that until you're used to the weight, just be extra careful with the chef's knife. All said, this is such a minor setback for how amazing these knives are otherwise.

There is a reason why these knives have so many 5 star ratings. They are simply that good. For the cost, there is no way you will regret buying them. I purchased these on a budget, and down the road when money isn't an issue, I'll be looking first at Forcshner/Victorinox.

EZ-DUZ-IT Deluxe Can Opener with Black Grips

EZ-DUZ-IT Deluxe Can Opener with Black GripsIf you liked the old USA made Swing-Away can openers, this is the one you want! After buying junk chinese knock off can openers for the past few years that have to be replaced after using them a few times, I searched everywhere for an old Swing Away brand can opener like the ones that used to last a lifetime but they too are now made in China and after a few uses, will become worthless. After searching, I found the EZ-Duz-It brand can opener that is made right here in the USA using all quality components, right down to the tool hardened cutting wheel and gears. There have been no hick-ups on any can, large or small, that I have tried this on. It grips the can and smoothly cuts it perfectly all the way around without ever getting off track or chewing up the can edge. It's so good, that I ordered three just in case because finding quality like this is more of an exception rather than a rule now days. A word of caution, like any fine cutting tool, I would not recommend placing it in the dishwasher.

I was looking for a replacement for my 30 year old Sw!ng@way handheld. It seems the old name has moved their manufacturing to another country and the quality suffered greatly.

These are made in the same plant as the originals. These ARE the originals.

I got the extra padded handle model and it's very nice. Works great, just like the ones we remember from our childhood.

I'd buy another one. When this one wears out in another 30 years.

How this can be less than 5 stars is beyond me. I mean some complain of comfort of a can opener, or a smell of the grips??? This takes less than 5 seconds to open a can of veggies and a grip smell, it smelled "new", not bad at all, but this is really really really nit-picky for $7

USA made, they are not kidding!!!

I have had many can openers in the last 10 years, due to the fact that they were all pieces of junk and they ALL were ready to go into the trash within a short period of time. Most needed to be trashed immediately. I could tell that this one was superior to the rest as soon as I took it out of the package. It feels solid and heavy, unlike all of the others that I wasted my money on. This one is well made. It actually goes around the entire top of the can with ease and without skipping! IT WORKS like a can opener should. Finally!!!

This can opener actually does what it is suppose to do, and does it well, with little effort on my part. I have arthritis in my fingers, using this opener helps me, I can open a can without struggle and pain. I no longer have to call on my husband for assistance with opening cans!

I love this can opener! I am sorry that I did not find this brand of can opener years before now and it is made in the USA! I will never buy another brand and as a matter of fact, I intend to order another one for my mother-in-law now.

Winco High Carbon Stainless Steel Bread Knife, 12 inch -- 1 each.

Winco High Carbon Stainless Steel Bread Knife, 12 inch -- 1 each.I needed a long, sharp bread knife for my Bread Pal Slicer, which is wide enough that an 8" or 10" bread knife just won't 'cut it', if you'll pardon the pun.

This knife, with it's 12" blade, is the perfect tool for the task.

Beware of one thing when shopping for 12" knives: A 12" knife is supposed to have a 12" blade. However, I've seen some [right here on Amazon] that claim to be a "12 inch knife"; but, in reality, are 12 inches in TOTAL LENGTH.

I highly recommend this knife.

In August of 1882, master German knifesmith Frederick Winwarre (pronounced VIN-varruh) came to this country with nothing but the clothes on his back and a small forge. His prize-winning breadknives were rumored to be so sharp that bakers banned them from their shops: if the proprietor were to turn his back, then in mere seconds a browsing customer could slice the morning's loaves into cubes, tuck them into a pocket, and abscond with tens of dollars worth of choice breadcrumbs. Renamed "Winware" (pronounced the way it looks; Freddy had a gift for marketing), the knives were a hit, and prices ballooned. Shortly after William Henry Vanderbilt II commissioned a 43-foot Winware breadknife forged from solid gold, the speculative bubble finally burst. Some say that WHV II was never the same after he suffered the resulting financial loss. Regardless, the intrinsic quality of Winwarre's product ensured that his business survived the ensuing century, albeit never recovering its former glory.

The Winware 12" Bread Knife Stain Free High Carbon Steel lives up to its name and its reputation. I have poured literally gallons of ink upon the blade, with nary a stain. My own analysis of the carbon content in the steel blade was carried out in a home laboratory without proper equipment, but I can confirm that the carbon content is indeed high. The length is also precisely 12" -a traditional length, suitable for cutting the long hot-dog buns intended for foot-long Frankfurters. While I have only cut several hundred loaves of bread since my purchase last week, performance has been strong. I will think fondly of Frederick Winwarre and the American Dream as I slice bread in the years to come.

KitchenAid Set of 2 Shears; Black Soft Grip All Purpose and Red Utility

KitchenAid Set of 2 Shears; Black Soft Grip All Purpose and Red UtilityKitchenAid Set of 2 Shears; Black Soft Grip All Purpose and Red . . .

I'm not a scissor aficionado, but IMNSHO, these are GREAT shears. Big handles make it very easy to slice thru everything we need to cut, even that practically impregnable plastic that everything seems to be packaged in these days. Just another great KitchenAid product. Who could ask for more?

My youngest son is 4 and loves his red utility scissors (they are high quality 'safer' scissors for him to use). KitchenAid provides him with hours of paper cutting enjoyment, while parents can do the serious tasks with the black ones in the kitchen.

The wide handles let stubby hands go through easily, and the turning radius is perfect. There is no lack of comfort with these shears.

Buy KitchenAid Set of 2 Shears; Black Soft Grip All Purpose and Red Utility Now

I keep these KitchenAid Shears handy whenever I'm in the kitchen. They are sharp, have a comfortable grip and cut easily. They clean up quickly too. I use them mainly for non-food items. The point at the tip makes it simple to push through plastic, such as if you are cutting open a tray of fresh ravioli. I also use them to cut open chips, cereal or Clif Bar wrappers that won't easily pull open or I don't want to risk making a tear down the side of the bag.

When I do use these shears for food items, it's usually to cut things like quesadilla or a sandwich. It works just as well as a knife as long as there's not too much filling between the tortillas or bread. I also use them to cut garlic bread. It works like a charm.

Very versatile. A tool I use nearly every day.

Kuhn Rikon Kulu Herb & Vegetable Knife Colori

Kuhn Rikon 6-Inch Nonstick Colori Kulu Herb & Vegetable Knife, GreenI saw this and bought it because I've always wanted an herb chopper,I noticed right off the bat that you cannot use it like a regular straight edged knife, so if you're trying to chop up and down, you won't like it, it's more like a rocking motion, because of the circular blade. I went to the williams sonoma website and they have the knife plus a video, (just search for kuhn rikon herb) There's a woman demonstrating the knife and 3 different ways to use it. Holding it normally, 2nd, placing your hand on the inside lower part of the handle (my favorite because it gives more leverage) and thirdly using it backwards. Just look at the video, it's hard to explain. Positive points, it's very sharp, it does work. I minced garlic and cilantro with it. Negative points, it's supposed to be nonstick, but I had to wipe off garlic bits, and I could definitely live without it, it's cool but not indispensable.

I bought this mainly for cutting basil, but it's great whenever you need to chop vegetables or herbs. It doesn't "bruise" the tender herbs.

It is VERY comfortable in the hand and the blade sheath is necessary as the edge if VERY sharp.

i loved it when i saw it at William Sonoma. when i received it, i was very excited to use it. but the knife isn't that sharp, so the 'rocking motion' really didn't function that well. it's a great concept, had the knife been sharp. i ended up using it once, and gave it to my brother. he likes these fancy useless things.

The product doesn't work as expected. I had a hard time mincing parsley. It's too small to get a good rocking motion started. Did it faster with a regular chef's knife. Not worth the money.

Victorinox Forged 4-Piece Serrated Steak Knife Set

Victorinox Forged 4-Piece Serrated Steak Knife SetVery expensive but, using non-serrated steak knives just doesn't cut it (ba dum tish). They cut well and have been holding up well but the finish will mar quite extensively even with light scrubbing from something like a Scott scouring sponge. I would buy again.
