This knife is substandard for professional kitchen work. The blade was not sharpened evenly, so veers to one side. Additionally, the handle is poorly designed. The handle tapers before it gets to the blade, so when gripping the knife to prepare for high volume chopping, there is no buffer, or finger guard, between the blade and the handle, forcing one to rest their hand on raw metal. This results in small cuts and eventually callousing on the hand with high volume work. The blade also dulls very quickly, and has had to be sharpened about four times since we purchased it, about a month ago. This is a great tool for running around the edge of a cake pan to loosen the cake, for mixing smaller bowls of dip or frosting and for spreading frosting or smoothing the top of batter before baking. It's smaller than a regular spatula but long enough to use mixing in a small saucepan. These tools will not melt. My other spatulas from Gastro Max are 8 years old and have outlived many inferior look-alikes that have not had the strength or heat resistance. I was delighted to find these tools on Amazon.I needed a nylon knife to work around inside my non-stick pans. The last thing I want to do is to use a metal utensil in my non-stick! The problem I faced was that I couldn't find a sturdy enough nylon knife to do everything I needed it to do. Enter the Gastromax knife. This nylon knife is unlike the poorly made plastic and nylon utensils I have used in the past. Every now and then I run across a simple little tool that I knew about but never owned. I always used the side of my chefs knife to transfer chopped, diced or minced food to the pan or bowl. I thought that a scoop or shovel was not necessary and was better suited for amateurs. Then I was cooking at a friend's house and saw him using this exact tool. I was shocked to see how quickly he picked up every bit of the chopped rosemary that was on his cutting board. As soon as I got home I purchased Rachael Ray's Bench Scrape/Shovel and I am glad that I did.I am always surprised by just how much food fits in this thing. In addition to using it as I shovel, I also use it to clean my cutting board, especially when I have been rolling dough on it. I also can divide dough with the knife edge of the scrape. I like it so much I will be using it as a hostess gift when I am invited to someone's house. It would also be an appropriate gift for a young cook. Great product!I love this bench scraper. It's large -5 x 6 inches, including the handle -so some people might find it awkward. But I like that you can scoop up everything in one shot. The handle is comfortable, but what I like most is that the sides have an edge sloping down from the handle, so chopped food doesn't fall off when you scrape it up off your cutting board. The shipping charge was outrageous -as much as the item itself -so I tried to find it locally (Kohl's carries Rachel Ray items) but couldn't. I got it for a Christmas present so I try not to think about the shipping rip-off.

This product is hard to find in stores so you can't really look at it before buying it, but I recommend you purchase it anyway. You're probably comparing this to a normal pastry scraper (which might be cheaper), but this is better for the following reasons:1. More surface area, many pastry scrapers are like 4x6 inches, while this is roughly 6x6.
2. The rubber grip on the handle is pretty unique and definitely a big plus.
3. Some handles on pastry scrapers are round and won't lie flat on the bench.
It's an all-around solid, sturdy product.

This is a really great butter dish for those who want a very practical and well designed dish. The bottom, where the butter stick sits, has a slightly raised edge, or well, so the stick will not slide off the edge when you're using it. This would also help contain any melted butter, if you're one of those who likes to leave the butter stick out of the refrigerator a lot. The lid fits well, so you can pick it up by the lid and it won't come off. This dish easily fits in the compartment in our refrigerator door and the lid is frosted, so it's clear enough you can see the stick inside. Boker Wood Magnetic Knife Block
I purchased this as a Warehouse Deal. I initially wasn't sure I'd keep it but I like a lot now. I was looking for a knife block that took up less space than my old block and that was a cleaner place to keep my knives. With the magnetic block, I like that the knife blades are all visible, so I can see what knife I'm reaching for, and that the holder doesn't collect dust like the slots in traditional knife blocks.I ordered the Olive and the one I received is much darker than the picture. Mine almost perfectly matches the Pakkawood handles on my LamsonSharp Silver series knives. It doesn't look as dark as the Makassar option (which looks like a dark walnut on my screen), but it is much darker than what is pictured for Olive. The wood is finished nicely, smooth with no rough edges. (Mine had a very small dent in the bottom front part of the base, but I was buying a used item, Warehouse Deal, and the dent was no big deal.) Since the color works for me, it was okay that it didn't match the picture.
Initially, I wasn't sure about the design. When taking a knife off, if you just pull the knife away, the holder tips over because the magnets are so strong. But removing the knife with a gentle twist (away from sharp side of blade) works. It took getting used to but now I don't have to think about it.
The knife holder will only hold one knife per panel. There is a magnetic rod in each panel right down the center. You can't see it but can feel where it is when placing a knife. The knifes are held straight and can't be off-center. So, you can't put two small knives on one panel. The panels are also not magnet on the backsides.
The shortest panel is 5 3/4 inches high. Each gets about 3/4" taller, up to the tallest, which is 9 1/2 inches (and it works for my 10" bread knife). Each of the panels is 2 1/4" wide except the back one, which is 2 1/2" wide. You can only put a knife with a blade wider than 2", or wider than the panels, on the back panel. (I have a vegetable cleaver on my back panel, which works great to hold a wide knife.)
This block is so much nicer than the old traditional block I had. It does consume less counter space, and the knives are not slanted forward covering more counter space. It has a simple and unique design, and it displays knives well. I think it is a little bit on the expensive side but I couldn't find anything else that I thought was better, and I looked at a lot of different options. I'm glad I was able to get a Warehouse Deal on it. After using it for a while, I really like it and hope to never have to replace it.I was having trouble finding a knife holder that would hold my Shun knives, because they had a different shape than the typical knife. This holder works well, and the knives are very accessible.

After much waiting, I finally received this magnetic block in Makassar. It's beautiful. The wood is slightly ligher than the pic, but it's still an extremely nice color of wood.. it matches my kitchen perfectly, and it doesn't take up *that* much counter real estate (not any more than a normal block would).The magnets that hold the knives are very strong and hold all of my knives with ease. I own a combination of normal knives as well as ones that are titanium coated. This knife block holds all of them solidly.

The makassar wood is just a bit lighter than in the picture. I haven't used it for kitchen knives so I'm not sure if the wood wears down or scratches, but something tells me this knife block will look great even after some use. Boker makes some wonderful products; very happy with their subcom, ceramic anti-grav and boker kal-09 folders also.
I use one for displaying folding knives (the knives are stored properly on the top magnets, and I folded 6 folding knives and affixed their spines to the bottom magnets; looks sweet) and am going to buy another for kitchen knives. Superb!

I focussed on this maker after seeing it featured (and highly rated) on the Crate and Barrell website.We wanted to get some really good quality knives, but didn't want one of those ridiculously massive, monumental wooden blocks which is the range of options you typically find when looking at knife sets. This setup is perfect without overdoing it. Has all the key pieces we want, without including a bunch of pieces we'll never use.
Beyond the set, we liked this model because it wasn't the cheapest (those looked pretty rickety), and it is also not the ridiculously high-end professional model either. Just right. Extremely well made and will probably last a lifetime. We're completely happy.

This is a good price for a versatile set of ceramic knives. They are wicked sharp and cut well. But I agree with another review, they are designed wrong for chopping or slicing veggies, or for sharpening the whole blade.The problem is the bolster at the end of the handle. It drops to the bottom of the blade and below. This may seem like a nit but to me it's not. The way I cut veggies is with a "pull, lift and push, pull..." circular motion, using the whole length of the blade. It's fast. But the bolster interferes with using the whole length of the blade, especially the edge near the handle. For the same reason, you can't sharpen the bolster end of the blade in a diamond sharpener -the bolster won't let you.
Now, if you just want to try out ceramic and don't expect to sharpen them (the edge lasts forever, well, about 10x longer than steel), then these are a great buy. But if you cut like I do, or want to sharpen them, check out the another set, like the Shenzhen set.
Do remember ceramic is about as brittle as glass, and may shatter or break if dropped, bent or banged into frozen stuff or bone. So don't. But again, for a quick tryout of ceramic, a good bargain.I've been using these knifes for over a month. I haven't had any problems with the quality, but they are designed poorly for chopping. The heel/bolster of the knife is in the way to properly chop any vegetables.
Revised....The new design has outdated my previous review. It looks as if they have changed it so the bolster isn't protruding past the blade. I'll have to up my rating now even though I bought the previous style which aren't as good as these.I wanted to get a second set of ceramic knives as the family is always fighting over who gets to use the ceramic knives!
Thought these were a pretty good deal for 4 knives and a peeler.
I actually like sharpness of the knives. However there is one MAJOR flaw in the design. There is no clearance for your hand, as the bolster is set parallel to the blade edge, which means your fingers are level if not past the blade, so you can't chop without smashing your fingers/knuckles against the cutting board surface.
And I also own the Kyocera DS-50 Ceramic Knife Sharpener, and the way the bolster is situated, prevents me from sharpening the lower half of the knife edge.
While other reviewers are correct that it's a good price, given that it is of limited use in the kitchen (can't chop or re-sharpen fully), I wouldn't recommend this product.Knives are weighted well and extremely sharp. I bought this Joyce Chen Chinese Kitchen Knife (clever) after owning one for the past 11 years as a wedding gift. Over the years I have used the one I own for everything from slicing tomatoes to separating rib steaks. I know it is not recommeded for bone cutting/breaking but it has worked well and resharpened well. I am very satisfied with the one I own. The only downside is with the wooden handle, like all wood it takes some extra care. If you let it dry out it will crack but with a little TLC and mineral oil it is okay.I bought this knife about 5 years ago and, along with a paring knife, it's the only knife that I use. It's not fancy, it's not expensive, but it gets the job done. I'm almost embarrassed to admit, but I've done nothing but hone it until I bought a whetstone a few weeks ago. It seems to hold its blade pretty well. I have had my knife going on 8 years now, and it continues to be one of my three favorites, and my default knife for vegetables (chopping, mincing, dicing, julienne), beef, and most any "cutting-board" style task. I prefer it to my lovely French style chef's knife, although that sees a lot of use, too. I have a REALLY nice nakiri, and the poor thing almost never sees the light of day thanks to this knife (although this one is a bit awkward for, say, carving flowers out of fruit.)It doesn't require as much sharpening as you'd expect, and the quality will blow knives 3 times the price out of the water. (You don't see many truly high-dollar/high-quality Chinese cook's knives in the U.S., so I'm guessing that something like this made of folded steel would be notably superior, but if I had the option, I'd still stick with my Joyce Chen.)
Feels good in the hand, and is a solid little knife. I've asked a lot of it, and it's stepped up VERY nicely. Its larger blade takes a bit of getting used to for those who aren't familiar with this style of knife, but I can take apart a whole chicken with it in no time flat, and I can finely (razor thin) chop celery an entire bunch at a time.
Bottom line: I love my knife.

These knives are most definitely authentic and are simply stunning. There are certainly imposters out there, but these are the real deal and worth every penny.I purchased my Jean Dubost Olive Wood handle steak knife set elsewhere, but I'm writing this review to warn others away from this overpriced, low quality representation of a true Laguiole product and brand. I would not buy any Jean Dubost product as they have cut corners everywhere making this an inferior product;These knives are NOT forged, but instead are cheap stamped stainless steel of claimed 18/8 quality but are thin and the blades flex easily.
The olive wood used is of lower grade younger sources as it does not exhibit the kind of grain character and quality typically associated with better source olive wood.
Though this has a full tang, the construction is simple and does not follow the more authentic practice of a more substantial forged hand-chiseled spring.
The blade edges are not honed and exhibit spurs and chips in the set I purchased
The finish while highly polished does not appear as it will hold up well and my set was leaving black greasy like marks on the drying towel after cleaning by hand.
I have no proof that these knives were not made in France as the "certified" label states, but the construction quality suggests otherwise.
Fair warning you will find Wine Enthusiast and Willams-Sonoma selling this product as well. You would think they should know better. If this set of knives was priced at $99 or less and you only wanted the look of a real Laguiole product and were OK with the mediocre quality I'd say go for it. But at this price point these Jean Dubost knives are a rip off.

I have long been a fan of French made Laguiole steak knives. WE have a few sets, but I know there is a HUGE difference in the quality of the authentic French version vs. the Chinese version. Even Jean Dubost has a cheaper version that I have seen in places like Homegoods and Marshall's. It is easy to tell the difference in personyou simply need to pick up the knives to check for weight and balance.I was very pleased with this set. It arrived with a shrink wrapped cover that had the made in Theirs stickersince I ordered online, I had to open and check out the product to make sure it was as advertised. They are lovely. I purchased as a wedding gift for a dear friend and I know they will enjoy them as I do. The olive wood is beautiful and I am sure will be even more attractive with age. The are very stylishrustic yet modern.

These are beautiful knives. They are made in France by the top producer of authentic French Laguiole cutlery. They have a good weight and balance. The blade is beautifully forged in a nice heavy (but not to heavy) weight and is etched with decorative scroll on the exposed edge in the handle. The handles are rich-looking and beautifully finished in olive wood, which is relatively light in color with a nice grain and will probably darken with use. Dubost has other styles of handles in this otherwise same knife listed as "mineral', "pearlized ivory" and various colors that are nice but plastic, and in stainless, but these are the most elegant looking. There are many less expensive "Laguiole" style knives available (and Dubost also make a cheaper under $100 for a set of 6 line of knives in China under their brand but with thinner stamped instead of forged steel blades). J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 10-Piece East Meets West Block Set
This is a poor quality line of knives stamped in China. They are not forged, they are poorly ground and they are not honed. I found that the edges were so poorly ground that I could not just hone them prior to use -I would have to regrind the edges.Henckels does have a very good line of forged, hollow ground and honed knives called the "Henckels International Classic" which cost about twice this "International Fine Edge Pro" set. The "International Classic" set is made in Spain and weighs about 80% of the high end "Henckels Twin Pro S" knives made in Germany for less than half the cost of the German knives.
I returned these knives and bought the "Henckels International Classic" sets instead as gifts.These knives are pretty good, but they did not blow me away with their craftsmanship. They say to be German Stainless steel, and maybe the steel did come form Germany, but they were made in Thailand, and it shows. The blades are sharp enough to get the job done, and the selection of knives is great. However, the handles are just cheap plastic, and several of blades have a lazy grind near the handles.
Overall, they are good, but if you are hoping to score a great set of knives, I would say spend a little more and get something of better quality. I bought these on sale for $80, and I would say I am satisfied, but I was hoping for more. Definitely do not buy these for more than a hundred dollars.

I've had this knife set for almost a year now and have used it practically every day, yet it's just as beautiful as the day I bought it. One thing I noticed in particular was how much sharper it was right out of the box compared to similar collections I looked at. The bread knife is especially a joy to use; it slices french loaves effortlessly.The variety of knives means you'll always have the right tool on hand, now matter what comes your way. This also has an added bonus if you share the kitchen with someone, and as such I think it makes an excellent couple's first knife set. For example, while I'm using the 7" santoku to slice squash for a side dish, my girlfriend can use the 5" santoku to slice cucumber for a salad; dinner is done twice as fast.

Pardon the pun...but plastic knives just weren't cutting it anymore @ lunch...literally. Bought this for several reasons:1. Reviews on Amazon mixed but worth the risk. Used it right away on a stuffed chicken breast. Pretty smooth slicing.
2. Price $6.15 + prime shipping can't be beat. Cheaper than what I could find in stores.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 7-Inch Hollow Ground Santoku Knife
I'm a young college student who works at a restaurant as a waiter. Like many young people, I one day got a fleeting aspiration that would probably go away within a couple of weeks. I wanted to be an awesome cook, so the first thing I did was ask the chef at my restaurant what tools I needed to start. He told me a good kitchen knife is THE essential tool of the chef. He recommended I go to Williams Sonoma and try out every knife possible but warned me that chef knives cost close to $100 dollars each. Whoa! He also said that Santoku blades are very popular these days because they're extremely versatile and feel good in your hands (something about balance).Nonetheless, I went to Williams-Sonoma the next day and tried out the Henkels, Wustof Classic, Wustof Grand Prix, Wustof Grand Prix 2, Globals, and Shuns. I ultimately chose the Wustof Grand Prix 2 because of the perfect balance in the knife. The handle was much grippier than the others, extremely light, but not as thin as the Globals (which I thought might lead to a blister), or with the unnatural offset handle of the Shun (Left handers actually feel that it works perfectly I'm a righty like the majority of people). I'm extremely paranoid of cutting myself ever since my mom cut herself pretty bad but after handling that particular knife, I was confident I would never cut myself. I eventually purchased it on Amazon with in an asian knife set (paring knife + santoku).
When I finally used it for the first time, I seriously could not believe how quickly I could cut. I always thought it was skill that the chefs at my workplace would use to dice things, slice meats, or chop veggies. Was I ever wrong! Any idiot using a knife this sharp and this balanced could cut like a master. I was cutting slices of apples so incredibly thin I started laughing! They were so thin, I could see through them! Tomatoes cut with no effort. After purchasing this knife, I started buying more and more kitchen supplies to match that same euphoria.
A year has passed, and for my recent birthday, my friends got me a gift certificate to Williams Sonoma. I am known amongst my friends as the guy who can cook an amazing meal. I owe it all to this knife! I'm very lazy, and if I took the same time cutting stuff as a I used to before I owned this knife, I simply would not cook for myself let alone others. I take this knife with me wherever I cook I refuse to use other people's knives. Even at work, I hate trying out my coworkers knives. They feel unnatural. I've even gotten comments when I cut up fruit for friends. They literally hear it come out of the knife block and look to see what made that sweet shimmering noise.
I rank this as #4 on my list of top 10 things I own. The first 3 being my North Face Goretex Jacket to get me through the winter walking to classes in Michigan. The second being my Computer so I can buy stuff and write reviews here. The third being my waterproof sneakers (again for the winter). I place this knife before my mp3 player, my stereo, my TV, my xbox, my Playstation 2, and all my Calphalon pans put together. I might even go so far as to put it in front of my absolutely adorable toy maltese-poodle mix (he's related to Jessica Simpson's dog). This review may seem a little far-fetched, but I am simply in love with my knife.
Pros Extremely good construction, Perfect Balance, Good Grip, Easy to Clean, Comes presharpened, Haven't needed to resharpen or even hone since I've owned it, looks good, grooves prevent food from sticking, able to cut extremely thin, Handle allows multiple grips to be used.
Cons Not dishwashable, my girlfriend left it in water overnight to soak, left permanent watermarks on my blade. Grr. Not cheap! Have no clue how to claim lifetime warranty, Tang is only 3/4 length (but also makes the knife lighter).
Try out as many knives before you purchase. Only 1 type will feel "right" to you. But if you think like me (safety first) then you'll love this knife.When my Wusthof Grand Prix II 7" Hollow Ground Santoku knife arrived from Amazon as a mid-year birthday present to myself, I tore open the packaging and immediately bonded with the high carbon no-stain steel beauty inside. The knife *gleamed*, was obviously surgically sharp and, for an intermediate cook who had been using a 1980s-era Chicago Cutlery chef's knife all her life, it was a bit...intimidating.
After several days of regarding the knife (and it doubtless regarding me), of hefting it and testing its balance, I decided to put it to work on ingredients for guacamole, and within seconds had not only sliced an onion to delightfully transparent thinness (oh, to watch the sun set through a slice of Walla Walla Sweet) but also the top-most layer of my little finger. We were off to a good start.
I had researched and compared the Wusthof Grand Prix II to Wusthof's classic and the original Grand Prix, as well as to various Henkels knives. The Grand Prix II came out ahead for me, primarily because of Wusthof' quality and because I personally wanted to experience a change from the chef's blade and classic straight handle I'd been using for so many years, to a santoku blade and ergonomic handle.
I recommend this knife to anyone who has used vintage or department-store quality knives all their lives, who has envied the ease in which chefs on the Food Channel slice and dice (now you, too, can do it!), who wants to better enjoy food preparation, or who wants to work with the most modern and well-made knife the market offers. With little effort on your part, you can just sit back and watch it perform like a manual food processor, precisely cutting onions, bell peppers, etc., into cubes of perfect symmetry. Enjoy.

I am lucky enough to own three very beautiful blades: a Shun Santoku 7", the Wusthof Grand Prix II 7", and the Henckel 8". Of these three the Wusthof is my least favorite. The blade is somewhat thinner than the Shun, which may be a positive point for those who prefer lighter blades. The black plastic handle also contributes to a lighter weight. However, I personally prefer the heavier better quality steel of the Shun as well as the beautiful wooden handle. Makes for very satisfactory action on the cutting board--solid thunks. Of those three knives, the Henckel is by far my favorite. It is so incredibly versatile, nice quality materials, and the weight and length are perfect for very fast action using both hands. If you have a choice, I would definitely research Shun and Henckel. That said, the Wusthof is a wonderful knife and you should be very pleased with it. As I said, some of the things that I find less attractive about it may very well be a draw for others. It's a good quality blade and with proper care should last many years. If you've ever wondered what the fuss about knives was, then you really must borrow a nice knife for an evening of cooking. I have been an enthusiastic amateur chef for many years and have accumulated a knife block full of various fine-edged knives. My most used knife was my Wustof Grand Prix 10" chef. When I saw Rachel Ray using this strange looking knife of the Food Channel, I was intrigued. Over time I saw more and more of the chefs on The Food Channel using this knife and became very intrigued. I decided to buy one. After six months it is still the most used knife in my kitchen. For things like chopping onions, carrots, celery, peppers, garlic, etc it is much easier to use than my chefs knife. Its balance and light weight make a dream to use in this application.You are still going to need your other knifes. I reach for my chef's knife when it comes time to open a squash or eggplant. I go to my paring, butcher, bread, slicing and carving knifes as appropriate. However, I wind up using this jewel more than all of them put together. Buy it; you will not regret the decision.

I bought this knife to complement my set of Grand Prix knives because I wanted something that was mid-way between a chef's knife and a cleaver and this fit the bill. The knife is very useful, well designed and well made (as expected of a Wusthof). I would prefer the knife to be a little heavier as it feels somewhat lighter to me than my 8 inch Grand Prix Chef's knife. But it cuts through meat and veggies very well without any "clinging" to the blade. It also makes short work of tough fruits like melons, canteloupes, etc. I also find the Grand Prix 2 handle not as comfortable as my Grand Prixs. I prefer the straight-backed handle of the older model to the new humped-back ergonomic handles on the Grand Prix 2's but that is just my preference. Otherwise, I am pleased with the knife.
