Gourmet Settings "Stand By" 20-Piece 18-0 Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4

Gourmet Settings 'Stand By' 20-Piece 18-0 Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4My wife and I were married in 2002. One of the many many things we picked out was a nice set of everyday flatware. It was a brushed metal set we found really inexpensive at a home store that specializes in "beds, baths and more". The thing I loved about that set was it was very strong. I tried has hard as I could to bend it and there was not even a little even a slight wiggle.

Well, 10 year and 4 kids later, about half the set is left.

I have been looking for the past 5 years to find the perfect replacement, I can't tell you how many sets I looked at.... A LOT.

One day we got invited to a social engadgment. When we sat down to eat, I saw the closest set to what we had. I flipped the fork over and found enough info to find the website and then find this set on Amazon.

So, The good:

* strong. When I try to bend them very hard though not as hard as possible, there is a very slight wiggle. But they are stronger then most flatware on the market.

* Feel. The weight, ballance and design feel nice in your hand.

* simple modern design. I personally don't like flowery and overtly ornate designed flatware. I also prefer the brushed look vs ultra shiny. for my me, the design of this set is really nice for every day use.

* price, at $40 for a 5 pieve set for 4 it is quite a bargain. This isn't a walmart cheap set.

the bad:

* The small fork is SMALL. Like little kid small. It isn't a deal breaker by any means. Though, I think the set would be better if it was slightly bigger.

* Thick. These would be a little better if they were a little thicker. Don't get me wrong, they aren't thin and they are well made. I just wish they were a little thicker.

Ultimately I really like this set. Gourmet Settings has a lot of nice stuff at reasonable prices. Check them out. All things considered, five stars in my book!

And this time we smartened up. We purchased 5 sets. 3 sets to use and 2 extra boxes to replace them as pieces disappear.... i did mention I have 4 kids?!?

Matches the set I oot for my wedding in 2006 but it seems they're thinner and lighter than before and therefore cheaper. :(

I like flatware with some heft. I bought these because I needed another addition to the sets I purchased from Target years ago. Target no longer carries them, but Amazon fixed me right up. This flatware has lasted for years with only minor scratches. It is nice and sturdy with wide enough handles for my paws to comfortably grip them.

Swiss Army Brands 40019 Boning Knife, 6-Inch

Swiss Army Brands 40019 Boning Knife, 6-InchI bought this on the recommendation of my brother-in-law (an artisanal butcher and formerly sous chef at a Michelin star restaurant). He uses this as part of his daily butchering kit. Since good knives are a critical part of his trade, I trusted his advice and couldn't be happier with the decision.

For the last two years I have participated in small scale hog slaughter with friends and family. The Victorinox Forschner knives paired with a good steel (F. Dick Multicut) made a huge difference the second year; breaking and butchering 5 pigs in about half the time we butchered 4 pigs the year before. The flexibility is great for maneuvering around bones and executing a clean cut, even in novice hands.

The rosewood handle soaks up fat, preventing the handle from getting slick thus preventing dangerous situations. I was worried about the clean-up with the soaked up fat, but had no problems cleaning with soap and water. While fibrox may be slightly easier to clean, I'd rather spend an extra minute cleaning than hours in an Emergency Room waiting to get stitches from an accidental cut.

Will gladly buy more Victorinox Forschner knives in the future.

Tramontina Porterhouse 4 Pc Steak Knife Set

Tramontina Porterhouse 4 Pc Steak Knife SetI have an 8 set of these with a wooden block, purchased about 17 years ago and they are still great . Have large comfortable handles, slightly larger handles and blades than most steak knives. Stay sharp too . Excellent quality knives and not made in China . Tramontina makes excellent knives and these aren't flimsy knives . We also have two other block sets of kitchen cutlery by Tramontina . I would recommend them all as a very good dollar buy .

I have eight of these, and they are wonderful. I love Tramontina products, everything I have is great! I have several pieces of cookware with lids and they cook great, clean up good and store easily...

Wusthof 3 Stage Electric Knife Sharpener

Wusthof 3 Stage Electric Knife SharpenerThe Wusthof sharpener is easy to use, and the directions easy to follow. The result is a very sharp knife! However, our sharpener arrived with only three rubber feet and we had to put a towel under the other corner to keep it from wobbling during use. I emailed Wusthof customer service to order the missing foot, and about 10 days later got a generic reply back that "they were sorry to hear about problems with my knife", along with a detailed attachment specifying how to package, insure, and send my knife back to them. I then called customer service to tell them it was a sharpener issue (not a knife) and was told that they don't supply parts and that my only options were to package and ship the whole sharpener assembly back to either Wusthof or to Amazon. The missing rubber foot is at most a $0.50 cent part that simply pushes into place, and I think it ridiculous that their fix to this problem is a complicated and expensive re-packaging and shipment.

This sharpener is the best made. It matches my $700 wet honing equipment with ease. Follow the instructions and you will be very satisfied.Watch out for your fingers!

Victorinox 48042 Cutlery 3-Piece Paring Knife Set

Victorinox 48042 Cutlery 3-Piece Paring Knife SetI almost didn't buy this set because I figured I'd have no use for a gimmicky curved knife and a serrated blade, I only wanted the normal paring knife, but the set was only a little bit more expensive than an individual paring knife. As it turns out I use the curved knife more than any other knife I own, and the serrated one more than the normal paring knifeI was fully prepared to hide those two knives in the back of my drawer and never look at them again, but they are really great. I'm sure you can get better knives somewhere, but not at anything remotely close to this price. I am pretty picky about knives, and Forschner's are definitely the best I have used. I also strongly recommend the 8 inch chefs knife. I guess the best way to sum up my feelings about these (and the 8 inch chef's knife) is that I would have happily paid 4 or 5 times what they cost.

I've ordered this set and other Foschner knives and I highly recommend them.

They are reasonably priced, keep their edge, and are balanced.

I think they are better than my high-priced, over-rated Henckels knives.

It's great to find a reasonably-priced quality product.

I purchased these on somewhat of a whim as my older paring knives were getting worn. They have quickly become the first knives I reach for. The varied selection fulfill most of my daily needs. They are sharp and lightweight which is especially handy for a woman. I'm very satisfied with my purchase and it didn't "break the bank". I think they will sharpen easily when needed and last for many, many years.

10/09I've used these knives now for over a year and they sharpen up quickly and easily with this handy little sharpener: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JENO8/ref=cm_rdp_product I am very happy with both of these purchases and recommend them.

3/11I still have and use these knives daily. They hold their sharpness quite well for my needs, (though I am not a professional chef), and are very comfortable to use for me. I am an average sized, middle 50's woman, and use these knives for a multitude of tasks.

Want Victorinox 48042 Cutlery 3-Piece Paring Knife Set Discount?

The standard paring knife included here is wonderful. It's thin, lightweight, flexible, and sharp. It slides through vegetables as easily as it does through butter. It neatly conforms to the contours of what you're cutting, if you so desire. I cored some tomatoes last night, and didn't have any issues. Great, too, for mincing garlic.

Honestly, I haven't really found much use for the other two knives in this package, as they're specialty knives, and I don't do a whole lot of the peeling which they're useful for. The normal paring knife is fine for most non-peeling sorts of tasks.

But, for $10, you're not going to find a better paring knife. The only way you're going to get something better is to spend four or five times as much, and I'd rather just buy a new one of these every few years (under heavy use). (As another reviewer said, they're quite thin, so sharpening would be a pain -I haven't had to do so, yet.)

Mountainwoods Fiddle Bow Bread Knife Set with Crumb Tray 3-pc.

Mountainwoods Fiddle Bow Bread Knife Set with Crumb Tray 3-pc.I like my knife and crumb tray but I would like the crumb tray better if were not all warped! Because it is not at all level, it is hard to cut all the way through the bread. The knife is great though.

I did not use the tray until after I had thrown away the box and invoice because I knew I wanted it and, truthfully, I did not even think about the possibility of warping. My loss.

Marianna Settles

Very light weight and tended to move as you cut. The bow knife cut very thin and uneven slices on crusty bread. One friend used it and said his bow knife was much easier to use as the bow was larger and cut thicker slices. We had a crusty baquette that we gave up on and used bread knife. Also had a label stuck on top of cutting surface that left sticky goo.

Cutco Cutlery Paring Knife 2 3/4' blade Like New
  • USA Made

  • Free Factory Sharpening/Replacement

To be fair, I did not actually spend my own money on this cutco paring knife. I have experience with one that's been "in the family" for a little while. Aside from my experience with this paring knife, my sister also owns an entire block set of cutco knives, which I have sharpened for her(I know cutco sharpens them for you, but in all frankness, I know I can do a better job, and I didn't charge her anything either:). From my experience with all of the cutco knives, I have 3 solid quality and performance criticisms which have nothing to do with the gimmicky way the company operates.

1. To my understanding, cutco uses 440A stainless steel in their blades hardened to 56HRC. 440A is such a cheap steel, there is absolutely no justification for the price point. There are a plethora of knives made by reputable knife companies(using far superior steels over 440A)selling at a much lower price point than these exorbitantly expensive cutco knives. The wonderful Wusthof Gourmet 3" paring knife is one such example:Wusthof 4022 Gourmet 3-Inch Paring Knife

2.Also, 56 on the rockwell scale is way too soft for a decent kitchen knife. You really want something at least approaching 59 or 60 for it to have decent edge holding capabilities. And no, it will not be impossible to resharpen at this hardness.

3. Cutco kitchen knives are hollow ground. This edge geometry is not ideal for the average slicing task in the kitchen. A fully flat ground profile is much preferred(the only better edge geometry, other than a fully flat ground blade, would be that of the traditional Japanese single ground edges as seen in the usuba or yanagiba as used by sushi chefs). The advantage of a hollow ground knife is that it allows for a thicker spine(thickness = strength) relative to the fine edge. However, this quality is completely unnecessary in a kitchen knife, unless you plan on using yours to dig a grave or pry open tin cans.

Aside from these 3 basic criticisms, the price point of cutco knives is an enormous turn off. Honestly, the quality of the steel used in them is no better than what you will find in the cheapest knife available at your local wal-mart. As I mentioned above, there are so many good knives made with decent and superior steels(x50CrMov15, aus8A, vg10, etc...), why would you buy a knife made with such a cheap underwhelming steel for the price that they are sold for? The price tag that should be placed on this cutco paring knife? I do think that the construction and handle materials are decent, so, for that alone, I suppose it might be worth 5~10 dollars. However, since the knife won't perform well, that really doesn't matter... so, to me, its not even worth a couple bucks...

Update:

The cutco pairing knife uses 440A steel and the wusthof pairing knife(mentioned above) uses a steel called x50CrMov15. Here is further clarification as to why the Cutco pairing knife loses when compared side by side with the wusthof:

To start with, I must go into a little detail about the steels employed in both knives.

440A tends to contain impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus which make the steel more brittle. X50CrMov15, as far as I am aware, does not. If it does, the quantity is much less. X50CrMov15 has a roughly .15% vanadium content. Vanadium is a carbide former and increases wear resistance and hardenability. Also, vanadium refines the grain structure of the steel, which aids in its toughness and ease of re-sharpening; this means it will allow the steel to take and hold a sharper edge. This is the biggest difference between 440A and x50CrMov15. Although 440A has a higher chromium content, which may give it better corrosion resistance, since chromium forms large complex carbides, it tends to hinder sharpenability. Since any steel with 11~13% chromium is considered "stainless," the 16~18% chromium content in 440A compared with the 14.5% in x50CrMov15 is arguably too much in the application of a kitchen knife(also, I have seen rust spots on many cutco knives...and though this is easily removed, as it is with any "stainless" steel, the increased chromium really does nothing but harm).

Now, depending on the heat treatments/temperings and such there can be a certain amount of difference from one knife with the same steel to another, as it is with all steels. For this reason, please be advised that all pairing knives using x50CrMoV15 may not perform identically one to another. However, in the way that wusthof has treated the steel in this knife, x50CrMov15 seems perfect for a pairing knife because of the following reasons:

1. Ease of sharpening. The wusthof pairing knife I own is one of the easiest knives to re-sharpen. It doesn't take very long for me to touch it up.

2. Excellent sharpenability. In addition to its ease of sharpening, the sharpenaibility means it can take a scary sharp edge.

3. Though x50crMov15 is not the toughest steel out there, in its application for a paring knife, it is perfect. Since a paring knife rarely touches a hard surface such as a cutting board(wood or otherwise) and is primarily used for peeling or detailed work against a relatively soft media such as a fruit or vegetable, it really doesn't dull quickly even when the knife is so thin(which makes it an absolutely magnificent slicer/peeler etc... it just cuts through so easily).

In contrast, the hollow ground profile of the cutco pairing knife combined with its thicker spine do not suit its intended purpose, and if you use them side by side, the difference is astounding. Also, as I mentioned before, the Cutco pairing knife is really hard to get razor sharp..., and when you get it, my experience is that it doesn't maintain that razor sharpness very long.... Which goes along with the analysis of the steels I provided above. I'm just not happy with the steel or the blade geometry. Also, the cost makes the wusthof pairing knife a much better buy in contrast to the cutco. The wusthof is a better knife, it works better, is significantly cheaper, uses better steel, has a better grind for its purpose... what more can I say? That's all...just one user's opinion. Your experiences may very, and I respect those that would rather purchase a USA made product. I hope my data points and opinions have been informative to some:)

I love this little knife. It was sharp when I got it and is sharp a year later. I have other $9 paring knives that just take up space in the drawer. This one feels good and is very sharp exactly what I want in a paring knife.

Ok, it lost a star for price. I don't mind paying more for nice knives but paring has always been more worker bee than shining star in my kitchen.

I was thrilled to find a replacement Cutco paring knife after mine disappeared and I felt lost in the kitchen. Best knives ever!

The paring knife is beyond awesome. It keeps the edge for a super long time, and the handle feels great in my hands compared to the normally short and stubby paring knife handles. Coming from a rep, however, I would suggest the 4" paring knife that is also from cutco, but costs only $2 more than the 2 3/4" one. That being said, it is also much cheaper to get it straight from the manufacturers. If you want to know more about it, contact me at hokuwong@gmail.com. Pick one up for yourself and feel the difference.

Mundial 5807-5 5-Inch Curved Semi-Stiff Boning Knife, Black

Mundial 5807-5 5-Inch Curved Semi-Stiff Boning Knife, BlackI have butchered several kinds of tasty animals using this knife, and it's excellent. The handle is easy to grasp, ergonomically pleasing, and retains its grip even when greasy or bloody, though is far safer when clean. The blade is well shaped, has exactly the stiffness yet flexibility needed for everything from breaking down beef or pork halves to cutting up a chicken for dinner. If you work or learn in an environment where many people have their own knives, the unique serial number on the blade will settle any and all ownership disputes. The knife arrives factory razor sharp, and is easy to keep that way on a waterstone. If you mess up in spite of its inherently safer design and construction, you WILL cut yourself badly it works on you meat every bit as well as it works on food meat. I do not see this as a detriment, it just means it does exactly what it's supposed to do. As all knives of its type, this is meant to have the hell used out of it and then replaced once it's been sharpened down to a needle. At the $17 I paid for it, that's a whole lot of hell you get for your money.

If you use a boning knife a lot, you want to have this one in your knife kit.

Gulliver Corkscrew Cocobolo Handle

Gulliver Corkscrew Cocobolo HandleFrom the reviews I read, I thought this corkscrew would be above average. It's well made, but not any better than many others at a much lower cost. I expected a sturdier product, but I'm sure this will last many years and the design is quite nice. I don't think it was worth the money. The style is better than average.

Wusthof 9-Inch Sharpening Steel

Wusthof 9-Inch Sharpening SteelIt works just fine as a sharpening steel, but it is NOT a Wusthof brand steel. First indicator is that the rod did not come in a box; rather, just had a slip of cardboard over the steel to protect it. The cardboard had "Made In Germany" and said it was a Wusthof, but...main indicator this was not legit is that the red "W" logo that is emblazoned on all Wusthof products (usually on the handle) was IMITATED with a red "W" sticker. Dude. The sharpening rod works well and does the job overall, but obviously I feel victim to false advertising in the product not being the brand I believed it to be. Beware.

its a fair price, right weight, the wusthof label did not last too long on the handel, beside that I think its ok.

(Pack of 4) Kid Safe Poly Sandwich Spreaders, 7½'I am terrible about reading the dimensions of items, assuming the size based on the typical size of an item but these are really pretty big. I purchased them to go on a colorful cheese display as spreaders as they came up on an Amazon search for such an item but they were way too big for that purpose. They are very pretty and seem completely safe for kids I am glad I purchased them for my son to use but they didn't suit the purpose I actually purchased them for. My fault for not reading the dimensions!

Mundial Solid Wood In-Drawer Knife Storage Tray, Large

Mundial Solid Wood In-Drawer Knife Storage Tray, LargeNice construction and finish. Works as advertised. The only problem is that low height drawers will not permit taller knives like a Santoku to fit. I'm not prepared to sacrifice one of my few deeper drawers for my knives yet so this product may be limited in its applications.

Otherwise it works as intended... keeping my knives away from my cats and keeping the sharp edges away from blindly groping fingers.

We had a dedicated knife drawer in the Wood-Mode cabinets at our previous house. The drawer had a beautiful maple slab with slits for each knife and a fitted mat to cushion the handles. Nice, but a waste of space and ridiculously expensive. When we moved to downsize we got the Mundial unit. We were amused to see that the Mundial knife tray stored the same number of knives in less than 1/3 of the space, is just as easy to access and the cost is around 5% of what Wood-Mode charge. The quality and finish are excellent.

I bought this as well as the Henckel one. It is much easier to get the shorter knives out of this one than out of the Henckel because you can grab the knives more easily. Also, the large knives rest better in this model than in the Henckel one because of the gaps (the Henckel one has a solid, triangular block and the knives have a tendency to wiggle left to right a little.) I think both models are good but I would rather buy this one again.

Powell Furniture Pennfield Butcher Block Black Kitchen Island

Powell Furniture Pennfield Butcher Block Black Kitchen IslandI have had the island for a year. It changed the whole dynamic of my kitchen. We hang out there a lot more and overall made the kitchen a more functional work and play space. This is a beautiful piece of furniture that will enhance the look of your kitchen but more importantly your everyday family interactions. I got 2 stools to go along with it so we often hang out at the island.

We purchased this for our kitchen 3 weeks ago. It came in a timely manner and the delivery guys were very nice. It is pretty, sturdy and as described. The only problem is that it appears that it was dropped during shipping. A drawer is broken, a trim piece is broken, one drawer won't open and they whole right side is out of kilter. We have sent in a complaint/report but still have not heard a single thing back. You would think that if you paid over a $1000 for something that you would get it in one piece and not have to consider doing all sorts of repair work to it. I want to love it, but I'm frustrated at the lack of response from Amazon.

I ordered this island thinking it would come to my home when the delivery date was set. I have yet to receive it. I've never written a negative review in my life but I have three issues with this whole process. You have to deal with three different companys. The manufacturer (Cymax), Manna (Freight company), and Retail Express Delivery (Delivery Company).

1. Retail Express Delivery: Customer Service is not very friendly or helpful. I called to let them know that I have yet to receive the island and they told me I didnt know what I was talking about. That they never called me. Even though my phone record shows multiple phone calls from them. They were extremely rude and hostile. I have seen negative reviews for this delivery company about their bad attitudes as well as their bad deliveries.

2. Manna Freight Company: unresponsive and misleading. They made promises that were not theirs to make. I was given 3 different delivery dates and many promises. I am like most Americans and work for a living. I cannot wait around constantly for a delivery to be sent to my home. I commute an hour each way and it is unacceptable that I would be told all sorts of times by 2 different delivery companies.

3. Cymax: Either Manna lied and had my item but never sent it to Retail Express Delivery or Cymax lied and never delivered it to Manna which delayed my item. The main responsibility of the manufacturer is to ship it to the Delivery company(ies) to send to me on time.

All in all I would not recommend this item UNLESS you have time to kill and dont mind waiting for your item which I am still doing. I'm shocked Amazon would do business with this company. This makes me upset because I have a memorial for a close family member who passed away and this is the last piece we're waiting for in our kitchen. Everyone is supposed to be coming to my house afterwards. I guess that will change.

I responded to someone elses inquiry response to a prior review and figured I would add my own.

I ended up purchasing this island through wayfair during a sale comparable to this vendors current price of below $1k.

It took over a month for it to arrive, they do tell you approx 4 weeks for the delivery. Mine got routed across country and then back somehow when it drop shipped from Powell. I paid the extra $99 for the delivery team to actually bring it in the house and remove the packaging and am glad I did. It weighs almost 300 pounds and finding people to bring it in off the carport would have been a pain.

OK.. so how much assembly, very limited. When you open the box, do so on one of the narrow ends.. the shelves and granite insert are packaged in individual boxes underneath it.

The doors are pre hung. The knobs are installed in reverse. So the screw is on the outside of the drawer/knob on inside to keep the sides from bumping out in packaging.. you simply unscrew and reverse it.

Like many shelving units, there are multiple heights you can install the shelves at.. so inside the cabinet and in the open nook, you determine where to put your shelves by putting in the pegs and laying in the shelf. There are screws you can secure them with, but I did not find that necessary.

In the open center, I have my kitchenaid tilt head mixer. The mixer is too tall to allow for a shelf to go in there along with it. In the side cabinets I have my blender and food processor (KA as well). I hope this gives you an idea.

But that is your only assembly, get it in the house.. be careful of items packaged in the bottom. Reverse the knobs, install the shelves. The rest is all assembled.

I added a picture of it in my kitchen for you.. the picture with the small flower arrangement on top.

I give it 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I've only had it a month now. I have read a few other reviewers had issues with the counter top getting a split in it but one repaired it with wood putty and had no further issues. So, I'm keeping an eye out for that and will get some putty if I see one start.

It is beautiful in the kitchen and am so glad I bit the bullet and purchased it.

Russell International 8" Offset Sandwich Knife

Dexter Russell Basics 8' Offset Sandwich KnifeI bought this knife because of the offset handle. It makes cutting with it much more ergonomically correct. I use it for cutting fresh pineapple. It cuts through the outside skin like butter. It could be used for cutting anything you want.

I absolutely love this knife. The offset angle of the handle feels so comfortable making prep work a breeze! This knife sees more action than any of my chef knives.

I love this knife. Glides through my tomatoes like through butter. Great on all fruits and veggies that are firm but soft. The one time I cut my finger was slicing 2 carrots at the same time. The knife is very sharp! I appreciate the handle at the angle so I am relaxed while cutting. The knife arrived quickly and well packaged. Thank you!

Not digging this knife, angle is awkward and unnatural... hurts my wrist. I had a forschner one that was so much better but sadly lost in a move.

MIU France 10-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Stamped Chef Knife

MIU France 10-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Stamped Chef KnifeIf you're looking at this, you're probably familiar with the Forschner/Victorinox/Fibrox chef's knife. It seems this style of knife has become quite popular since Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen gave it a glowing review.

The gist of their review is that they're pretty rigid, hold a good edge, comfortable, doesn't slip when wet, low-maintenance, and most of all, cheap!

With increasing demand, comes increasing price. The Fibrox costs more than some of my nice forged carbon-steel designer knives!

This MIU 10" chef's knife is a near clone of the Fibrox. It has the same antimicrobial polymer handle. Yes it feels cheap compared to wood, but so does the Fibrox which costs more than twice this price. More importantly, its ergonomic and won't slip from your hand even when wet. Notice the ergonomic shape and how the base of the grip hooks inwards. Plastic aside, this is a very comfortable and practical handle.

The blade is stamped high carbon stainless steel. It holds an edge very well. I use this knife every day. So much so, it stays out on the counter 24/7. (no children or pets in the house) Even after 5 months of extensive use, it only needs an occasional hit with the honing steel to get right back to razor-sharp.

Stamped is generally considered inferior to forged because it flexes more, but stamped is just fine for the home kitchen. In fact, a little flex in the blade is great when you're filleting meat/fish.

Bottom Line: This is every bit as good as a Fibrox. 4 stars because it's not the very best I've ever used, but it works well. I use it more than my so-called "nicer" knives. And they're cheap to boot.

Part of my job requires me to do real heavy chopping jobs. I was using a forged 10 inch and found my hand hurting after each use due to the heaviness of the knife. A co worker let me try out his 10 inch stamped victorinox fibrox to see if it helped and it did. I had to get a new knife at that point. I was on a bit of a budget, so I didnt want to cough up $30 for the fibrox. I came across this MIU and decided to go for it due to the price. Best decision I've made. I even like the handle of the MIU better than the Victorinox. This knife is extremely light weight and I no longer have issues with my hand hurting after heavy chopping. 5 stars

Gibson Mr Coffee Whistling 2-Quart Tea Kettle

Gibson Mr Coffee Whistling 2-Quart Tea KettleI love my kettle. I bought it back in December and have been using it 3-4 times a day. It's nothing fancy mind you, but it gets the job done. The whistle starts out as a gentle hum, so it gives a fair warning before it sets off into full steam. No rust. Just a plain, functional kettle. I'm glad I bought it. It could've shipped faster, but so could everything....

pretty quickly to very easy to clean and fill I really love this tea kettle.I would recommend this for all of the tea goers!

My last Tea Kettle was horrible and didn't last very well. This Tea Kettle appears to be exactly what any person needs when it pertains to quality.

We keep it on the stove for making hot water as it is needed. It has a nice, bright finish and looks nice sitting there on the stove. It heats quickly and does not leak. What else can you say about a teakettle?

Really a good price and a well built kettle...HOWEVER, the handle is not well designed. You may have to tighten the phillips head screw occasionally. Don't overfill. (A fill line is imprinted on the outside.) The whistle is loud, the quality is good. BUT watch that handle.

Messermeister - Bamboo Magnet Block - Holds 10 Knives

Messermeister - Bamboo Magnet Block - Holds 10 KnivesI was hesitant to buy this item because I have a set of heavy Global knives, but the magnet on this item is strong enough to keep them straight -even my 8 inch heavy Chef's knife. You have to know where the magnets are located, but once you do that it is easy to get your knives on and off the rack and back on. The bottom two slots are better suited to utility knives because of the angle. What I like about this block is that the blades of your knives aren't getting dulled like they do in a regular knife block. As a bonus, it looks really cool on my counter.

The magnets don't hold up anything but small knives. I did not expect it to hold a cleaver, but I have Henckles knives and this block won't even hold up a 5" knife. When I place a knife against the block, it just slides off and down to the countertop. Too bad, I really thought it was pretty and I like the idea of seeing the knife I want to use without having to pull it out of a block. I have a wall mounted magnetic knife holder that works very well, so I was hoping this would be capable of doing the job because I remodeled my kitchen and don't want to screw a wall mount holder into the tile backsplash.

Great idea but doesn't hold a cleaver very well. It will hold 10 knives depending on the size and weight.
