Core Bamboo Daffodil Collection Cutting Board

Core Bamboo Daffodil Collection Cutting Board, Extra LargeAfter reading the cutting board review in Cooks Illustrated, I realized that it was the Epicurean cutting board causing my knives to be constantly dull. I choose this board because bamboo is supposed to be gentle with your knives and I liked its looks. The board arrived in a box as big as a Hummer with lots of padding. Considering this is somewhat unbreakable, there was a bit of waste involved in shipping, but I'm Prime, so I did not pay for it (the planet did, though).

About the board, it is really well made and beautiful. Unlike my Epicurean boards, it is really flat, meaning that it stays where you put it, not spinning around on the high point. It seems to be good on the blades, but time will tell. I really like the channel routed around the edge to control liquid. All-in-all, a great purchase.

I was looking for a very large board on a small budget. I wasn't planning on it but I ended up adding gripper feet to the bottom due to a high spot on my counter causing it to rock. If you do this I would put a couple in the middle to prevent bowing from occurring when placing something very heavy on the board, like what happened to the other reviewer who placed a turkey on it. Although I think it would take a hefty amount of weight for this to happen as the board is .75" thick exactly. It's thicker than other bamboo boards and this also helps raise my ingredients off my low counter and makes it more comfortable for me to cut (I'm pretty tall).

I was indifferent to the liquid channel all around since I'm a vegetarian but on first use it caught a lot of juice from a tomato. The board is 1/4" smaller in width and length than claimed when measuring the longest parts of it. Not that big of a deal, and yes I checked out of curiosity. It is in fact exactly .75" thick though. It was somewhat dry upon arrival and I used a layer of mineral oil on it. Looked even better afterwards. You can find mineral oil in the laxative section for less than 2 bucks.

I love the freedom of space a large board like this affords you. It's also just big enough to slice home made pizza on, and work with dough on as well. Since you will not be lifting this over the skillet to drop chopped veggies in I suggest a handy Stainless Steel Scraper for transporting ingredients to the skillet, or around the board, and taking remnants to the trash. Take care of it it by wiping down with a soapy sponge/water and avoid soaking it or it will warp. Oil when it starts to look dry to prevent cracking.

The channel routing is a little rough and the sides have that bamboo grit in some parts. Not to bad to the touch but if you are wiping it with a paper towel it will grab some of it. You could take a fine grit sand paper to it but I think it'll smooth out over time.

I wasn't sure about the pucker shape but in person it is a lot more subtle than in the pictures. Did I mention that it is a beautiful board? I find myself admiring it when ever I walk by or while doing dishes. This large chunk of bamboo sitting next to all of the stainless steel, cast iron, and glass enhances the feel of the temple we call the kitchen. Oh how I love cooking.

The cutting board developed a five inch crack in the middle after only a couple of days of use. Apparently they use wood glue or adhesive to attach the bamboo strips together during assembly. This has resulted in one of the seams to partially separate. It is still useable, but food particles may become lodged in the crack over time. If I replace it. it will be with a different brand.

This is a strong and light cutting board, perfect for those not willing to invest in a heavy maple board. The deep grooves around the edge make it great for carving roasts. Looks good as a serving platter.

Love this board! It's very sturdy, doesn't have the funky smell that some bamboo boards have. The little "moat" is perfect for collecting juices from cooked meat and the size is perfect. I typically like thicker boards, but the size and shape of this is perfect for using it and storing it.

Chef'n Garlic Slice

Chef'n Garlic SliceI have used this a couple of times now. I love how easy it is once you get the hang of it. You have to cut the garlic in half or thirds before you put it into the compartment, otherwise you'll have a heck of a time trying to push the giant spring-top down and then twisting it to lock. It's so easy and fast to slice your garlic and all the slices are of uniform thickness. It really saves me time since I'm so slow at slicing and my hands stay relatively garlic free.

After using a similar product I was sold on the garlic slicer but this one does not compare. The compartment is small and only 1/3 of my head of garlic would actually fit in the chamber. I am returning it and going to the competitor website to order the one I had previously used which is no longer available on Amazon.

I, too, had great hopes for this item, but once you actually put any garlic in it, unless it is a TINY clove, the top will not close unless you use a great deal of force. Once you jam a clove or two into it, it does slice them very thinly, but it is such a pain that I will never use it again. If the hopper were deeper and wider it would probably work pretty well.

If, like me, you cannot cook without adding garlic, this little gadget is for you! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this garlic slice. You get used to just how many cloves can be put into it, at a time, and, after that it's a breeze! I don't know how I survived without it. AWESOME!!

Want Chef'n Garlic Slice Discount?

I have to put the piece of garlic tightly into a small hole and then push with great force to close and twist the top closed so I can then slice. The slices are great, but the effort required trying to get it into the slicer is awful. Anyone who has strength issues for their hands would not be successful with using this.

Shun Kaji Fusion Bread Knife, 9-Inch

Shun Kaji Fusion Bread Knife, 9-InchJust have to love this Kaji Fusion line of knives. They perform impeccably and look fantastic. The 9" bread knife is pretty sweet. Seriously sharp, wonderfully detailed, and solidly constructed. It didn't come in the originaly Shun packaging which is annoying, but not something to really rant about. This great knife easily tackles more than just bread.....tomatoes are a great example. It's definitely on the high end of the price scale but I was fortunate to get one substantially cheaper than the suggested price.

Furi Cutlery FX 10-Inch Coppertail Cook's Knife

Furi Cutlery FX 10-Inch Coppertail Cook's KnifeI purchased this knife not from Amazon but directly from the company. It's sharp and it stays that way. I keep a honing steel handy but I seldom use it with this knife. The slightly narrower blade allows you work the knife easily into tight working areas allowing you to surgically dissect a chicken in almost no time. It is also very well balanced. I haven't had the need to file down the copper end yet but I believe that some people will find it quite useful. About my only con with this knife is that the copper is quite hard to keep shining brightly.

Rosewill RHKN-11001 14-Piece Stainless Stell Knife Cutlery Block Set

Rosewill RHKN-11001 14-Piece Stainless Stell Knife Cutlery Block SetProbably the best kitchen knife set I've owned to date. I was so impressed by them that I ordered a second batch for my mother-in-law, who is an insanely dedicated cooking fanatic: She loves 'em, or at least she claims she does. She tends to spin them around in her hands with a look of burning hatred when she talks to me in her kitchen. I genuinely fear for my life. She dislikes me whole-heartedly.

But back on topic: holy heck, can these things cut. I have had no issues at all with them, personally!

This Knife Set was not what I Had Expected, But was exactly as I At First Thought I Would Get, Would Not Purchase Again, Live and Learn, Oh! Well I Can Use The Wood Block for some of my other knives.

Diamant Eversharp S/S 3" Paring Knife w/ Poly Handle

Diamant Eversharp S/S 3' Paring Knife w/ Poly HandleI purchased three of these knives about 5-7 years ago and have used them continually since. When one was lost and the other broken by misuse, I bought some new knives at a local store. After trying five different brands and still not finding anything satisfactory, I was thrilled to find this wonderful knife still available. It does everything it says. I make almost all my meals from scratch for a family of nine and after many years of heavy use it still works fine. I highly recommend this wonderful product.

I had this knife since last 2 years, someone gifted me and I like this light weight and sharp knife very much. the steel part of it came out form the plastic recently and I bought couple of other same size knives and didn't like any. Therefore, I searched for this one and found it on amazon. Its cheap and good.

Cucina Pro 681 Mezza Pizza Knife

Cucina Pro 681 Mezza Pizza KnifeThe pizza slicer in the illustration is NOT the same product that I received. I know the Cucina Pro brand and they make great products, however, this is not by any standard a high -end porduct. The stainless steel is not heavy gauged if that's what you're looking for. It will definitely slice pizza ,but with a some effort. The box reads for HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY, so not commercial obviously. Who knows how long it will last. One last detail , the item does not come with a hole in it , if you decide to hang it somewhere.I will probably return it and get one will a little more steel.

Awesome pizza cutter. If you are tired of stripping the topping off your pizza, get this. It's not as sharp as I would like, but I eat my crust crispy, so It still slices through it easily.

Mac Knife Chef Series Slicing Chef's Knife, 8-1/2-Inch

Mac Knife Chef Series Slicing Chef's Knife, 8-1/2-InchI love knifes.

This MAC is the first MAC I bought and it's awesome. It's very very light and one of the "go to" knives my finace grabs. The blade is very thin, allowing it to make quick work of dicing onions, cutting vegetables and mincing herbs. Personally, I never use any of my japonese knives for boning chicken, smashing garlic or any other "rough" use, but this knife is great for everything else.

I have maybe 12+ knives at home from my japanese collectoin (global, miyabi, shun) to my western knives (henckel, wusthof, etc...). From my 5" santoku to my 10" chef, I mix and match based on my mood and what I'm cutting. I grab this one often for vegetables and slicing cooked steaks (no bones).

Strengths:

1) Super sharp

2) Super light

3) Great price point

4) Hard metal (holds edge well for such a thin blade)

Weaknesses:

1) Angle of blade is not western, probably closer to 16-degrees so you need to sharpen accordingly. Additionally, most honing rods might not be hard enough to hone this strong metal. (Note: I don't know how hard this metal is);

2) Not advised (personally) for frozen items or anything hard as the blade is thin.

I gave this as a gift to my partner, and he treasures it. It keeps an edge really well, handles very well. feels great in the hand.

Sani Safe Brand Cooks Knife

Sani Safe Brand Cooks KnifeI researched all the knives the experts recommend Henckel, Schilling, etc. and found myself totally confused. I didn't need a full set of knives and only wanted a 8 to 10 inch chef's knife so buying a set seemed a waste, yet purchasing even 1 chef's knife from a big name brand would run me $80-100 with shipping. Then I saw a segment on the TODAY SHOW where they talked about how you could outfit an entire kitchen for $200 including a few of these Russel knives with the white handles. Mine cost under $25 and is sharp as a razor. I am thrilled with it and glad I saved so much. Would definitely recommend this knofe and thing I will buy a few more sizes in the future.

When I made the decision to upgrade my kitchen knives I had a difficult time settling on my large chef's knife or cook's knife as Dexter Russell calls this. I read as much as I could about kitchen knives at discussion forums like Chowhound and after reading the original review here and the handful of reviews of some of the similar models I rolled the dice on this.

I really like the light weight of this knife and having used a smaller 7" chef's knife for many years appreciate the nimbleness. The white handle provides a natural grip that gives you solid control over the knife. This cook's knife just has a substantial feel to it while not feeling heavy.

Update: The knife stained after cutting my first onion with it. Have since learned that carbon steel knives naturally stain to prevent rust. The product description describes this knife as stain-free and I ended up returning it. I stand by my comments as far as the handling of the knife but the staining may come as a surprise to some people who buy this.

Fox Run Mezzaluna With Guard, Double Blade

Fox Run Mezzaluna With Guard, Double Bladenot sure what i will do with it. i got it after watching them chop up my delicious salad at one of those salad shops. This thing I could not use to chop mine. First it's not long enough and I don't think the double blade is a good idea unless u have some really fat carrots or something to chop

Core Bamboo 2 Pack Bamboo Board Set, Solid

Core Bamboo 2 Pack Bamboo Board Set, SolidFound this 2 pack of Core brand cutting boards at Marshalls. But they are the same ones here.

Not very fond of them. Rough edges where you hold it. Also after just 1 use there are pieces of bamboo coming off constanly. Small little splinters though thankfully the bamboo is so soft it cannot hurt you. But still its getting on the food.

Love bamboo ... love Core Bamboo; so, it was hard to rate this item so low. I was thrilled to find this set at a brick & mortar store to replace old, plastic ones. But, would this thin set stand the test of time (like my large inch-thick cutting board)? I ignored my doubts & bought it. Should of heeded my gut/doubts ... the handle broke off in my hand when I picked it up to wash it after using it for the first time. It broke away cleanly where the strips meet; so, the strips weren't attached securely. Thankfully, I can return it. Hopefully, I will find thicker bamboo or teak cutting board(s).

I used one of these to chop up really spicy peppers the other night, and then several days later (after washing, of course) I was chopping up apples, and they got super spicy!! So, the board does absorb some of the juices. Wouldn't recommend using with meats at all.

Wusthof Classic Ikon Santoku, Hollow Edge

Wusthof Classic Ikon 5-Inch Santoku Hollow Edge KnifeThis was the first "nice" knife I've bought, intending on getting an entire set over the next few months, and it is a winner.

Obviously the first thing you notice is the blade's sharpness (I almost sliced myself when I first picked it up). It will cut through pretty much anything with ease. I busted it out the night I first bought it and sliced some radishes paper thin with ease. In fact, the hardest part is avoiding your fingers. The santoku portion means foods you are cutting will slide off the knife because of the "air pockets" that the grooves create.

The next thing you'll start to notice is the balance of the blade itself. Even compared to other Wusthof knives, the Ikon is exceptionally more balanced and lighter in the hand.

Finally, on an aesthetic level, the African wood handle sold me. It's contoured so it fits your hand well, yet feels sturdy enough to last a lifetime. The lack of a huge "red" Wusthof symbol on the handle is nicer, in my opinion, than the more inexpensive Wusthofs.

My recommendation, save your money from buying inferior knives and buy this one instead. You won't regret it.

I thought hard about getting the asian style(global, shun) but I hear they're harder to sharpen than the German knives. This knife is more comfortable than the Wustof classic, with an ergonomic grip that's very natural to hold(my hands are slightly smaller than average), even if some think it looks weird. Compared with the classic, the Ikon feels better balanced, too. I didn't know much about this knife when I bought it, but it's a solidly built, comfortable, sharp and does a nice job keeping from sticking to food. Best knife I've ever used. Highly recommended.

Buy Wusthof Classic Ikon Santoku, Hollow Edge Now

I got The Wusthof Classic Ikon Santoku 5" knife after researching about the different tiers of models and their craftmanship. The Classic Ikon line I would consider Wusthof's middle-of-the pack line of knives. Before I did my research, I have already purchased a set of Gourmet line knives (entry level). Let me tell you, The quality between the two lines is like night and day.

The balance, quality and ergonomic on the Classic Ikon santoku is amazing. Very light weight and cuts up vegetables and boneless meats with ease. I am a lefty in a world of righties, so this fits well on either hand. This fact (along with pricing) is a reason why Shun knives with their cool Demascus blade out of the equation: because of their special "D" handles makes them -handed specific...but I digress.

I am an amateur when it comes to cutlery and cooking, but when friends and family come over and help prepare the meal, I always get the "woah!" expression when they use this knife. It also helps that I have my set on a magnetic rack on the wall to showcase them. My sister was so impressed that I instantly knew what to get her for Christmas.

Keep in mind that when you do need to sharpen this knife, to do it with an Asian knife sharpener. It has a sharper angle than other knives like the Chef's knife. I believe it's 15 degrees for Asian knives like the santoku versus 20 degrees on the others like the Chef's.

From an amateur's perspective, this is the best knife I have ever used (except for the all-mighty butter knife!).

My first Wustof. Definitely will get another Wustof. Sharpest knife I've ever owned or used. Cut myself on the thumb fairly deep the first time I used it. Blade so sharp, I didn't feel pain, only the slicing motion. (Pain came later, of course). If all Wustof blades are as sharp, then the prices they charge are worth it. Just be careful out there.

I was nervous about spending so much money (over $50.00) for a single knife, a small knife at that, to add to my already large collection of knives. But this knife has surpassed all my expectations and continues to bless my life as I work around the kitchen. It is sharp and has maintained its edge. It sits beautifully in my hand and i chop and slice with an ease I haven't before. I like it so much I am saving up to buy the seven inch Wusthof Santoku. I recommend it highly.

Mcusta-Zanmai HKQ- 3007D Gyutou Knife

Mcusta- Zanmai HKQ-3005D Gyutou Knife, 8.2-InchThis is hands down the best knife I have ever owned! I work at a 5 star / 5 diamond hotel in the US, and there is a huge variation in the product that crosses my cutting board, and this knife has handled it all incredibly well. From very finely dicing shallots and chives, to breaking down pigs / fish / rabbits, this knife is a champ. The factory sharpen is the sharpest I have ever felt, and I have been to quite a few knife shows with the worlds best cutlery makers.

If there were any complaint at all on this knife, it would be how fast the beautiful lettering on the knife fades away. After using this knife every day for two months, the markings were very faint. Which is only cosmetic.

This steel holds a razor thin edge, at an even lower degree angle than it ships with. Of course that requires more sharpening, but it will still hold for four five days with hours of use a day.

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with Block

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with BlockI've had these for over a year now, absolutely a great purchase. No quality defects, and are better than any knives I've had.

I bought a set from Amazon three plus years ago-they are absolutely THE BEST--I use them daily and do practice after every use of the paring knife and the cooks knife to hand wash, dry and sharpen them before putting away. And I wouldn't trade them for any other brand. I bought the 8 piece classic set which I customized and includes two butcher(cooks) knives, the 6 inch paring knife, bread knife, spatula, sharpener (both-the one in the block and the combination knife shear sharpener) and scissors plus the wood block. I already had steak knives.

I had researched knives for months before buying them and have never had a bad experience; but watch--they are VERY SHARP, be careful!

These are great knives, very sharp, and seem to be very well built. The only thing keeping them from getting 5 stars is the santoku knife. It's a great knife, but when using it, the point of the hallowed edge is that food is not supposed to stick to the knife. But it does, food does not fall off of this knife.

Still, it's a very good set of knives, well worth the price.

Shenzhen Knives. 3.2" Ceramic Paring Knife

Shenzhen Knives. 3.2' Ceramic Paring KnifeI was looking for a ceramic knife and came across the Shenzhen Knives Ceramic Paring knife. It seemed like a better deal than the more expensive Kyocera, but had some concerns as I haven't heard of the brand. However, based on reviews it seemed that customers enjoyed the product and the price was reasonable for a ceramic knife.

The Good: Sharp knife, slices fruits and vegetables easily. Had no issues slicing tomatoes, and onions. I also like the plastic handle which was easy to grip and maneuver. The size of the knife made it ideal for the lighter slicing duties, which I prefer to the heavier and clunkier larger blade knives like a Chef's Knife. Very easy to clean, just ran it under some warm water and used dishwashing soap.

The Bad: It's a common complaint among customers, the ceramic knife are not as sturdy as a steel knife, so it won't replace your steel knife completely.

Bottom Line: If you are in the market for a more affordable ceramic knife, Shenzhen Knives is a great entry level ceramic knife that won't break the bank.

Shenzhen Knives. White Ceramic Paring Knife

This is one of the best knives I have ever had. It makes cutting things like a Tomato, Peach. hot dog, etc. a breeze. It is so sharp that you hardly have to press at all. It slices through objects easily with just a slight push or draw. Well worth the price in my opinion.

Buy Shenzhen Knives. 3.2" Ceramic Paring Knife Now

This was my first ceramic knife ever, and since then, whenever I'm with friends and family, I always ask to use their ceramic knife for comparison. Of course, they all think I'm crazy when I whip out my Shenzhen knife to do a side-by-side comparison. After cutting with dozens of other ceramic knives, I can't tell you how much I love mine. I was lucky out of the gate to have purchased this one. While others performed well, there was inevitably something that made me go back to mine. Little things such as I didn't care for the grip, or it didn't feel as sharp, I just felt like mine was the best all around performer, consistently.

If you never owned a ceramic knife before, I highly recommend it for cutting fruits, vegetables, and meat without bones. They are brittle, so you'd want to be careful about what you cut. And, if you're deciding on which knife to buy, I would say that you simply cannot go wrong with Shenzhen.
