Ginsu Koden 14-piece Stainless Cutlery Set With Black BlockWhen I received my ginsu koden I noticed that the black block was damaged, so I return it to Amazon and receive a new one.

Using it for two months, I can say that the knifes are indeed very sharp. But I noticed that one the knives is starting to rust, even with me washing the knifes always by hand.

Now, I noticed that the black block is starting to fall apart and unfortunately I am out of the Amazon return window.

So, If I could go back I would not buy this product.

Update 1: On 11/29/12 I sent an e-mail to GINSU requesting a black block replacement and I received an reply e-mail in the next day asking for my address so they could ship it for me.

Update 2: 10 days later, I received a brand new black block without any cost.

Due to how the company handled so quickly the problem, together with the product quality, I am rating them 4 stars instead of only 2 stars (that was my first rate)

I was so thrilled when this set arrived. The block and knives seemed like pretty decent quality stuff and looked spectacular in my kitchen. After one use, and one washing, my brand new knives are already rusting. By the time I remembered to request a refund, I was 4 days late after the refund window, so now I'm stuck with these. I'm going to try to write to Ginsu directly to get a refund. What a waste of money. =(

Excellent knives with a reasonable price. I bought five of the same type (Forged Premio) bread, 8-inch chef, 6-inch utility, 3-inch, and 5-inch santoku. Every one of them is amazing, very sharp, a pleasure to work with. A 3-inch may be a little heavy to do a lot of peeling.

This classic cheese knife is well made. The 4 1/4 inch handle will fit large hands, and the lightly serrated 3 13/16 inch stainless steel blade extends through the length of the knife. The wooden handle panels are secured with what look like metal pegs. I keep this knife in my toolbox for projects like lifting driveway paving stones and digging out the grass and weeds growing between the stones. (I use a garden hose to spray away the moss growing between the stones). I suppose this attractive knife would also suffice for cutting cheese on a cheeseboard.

Ronco Six Star Rocker Select 3-Piece Knife SetI got the big 25-piece set off the infomercial but was bothered with the fact that the knife block had two empty spaces. So I bought this set and put the Rocker and the paring knife in the empty slots. I've yet to find a use for the rocker, but with as often as I use paring knives I like having two on hand!

The small chef knife I bring with me to work: It's a great little dicer! It's cheap enough so that I don't care if it gets damaged, but good enough that it'll stand up to rigorous prep work in a professional kitchen.

True, the handles are cheap hollow plastic and the blades are certainly not the sturdiest things in the world, but they are by no means "bad" knives.

You do have to be delicate to make them last (and the Ronco lifetime guarantee thing is a headache to try to deal with: you may as well not even fool yourself into thinking you'll get anywhere with that). Following a few simple rules will prolong their life:

-DO NOT put them through the dishwasher: This is a rule you'd follow even with GREAT knives. Even though they are dishwasher safe, even Ronco typed up a small blurb on the back of their packaging saying why and how it can damage the knives. The heat and chemicals in modern dishwashers can damage the appearance, edge, and potentially the handles (which are, as mentioned, cheap plastic)

-DO NOT let them sit in the sink (Which is another thing you would do even if these were GREAT knives): Aside from the obvious safety risk of leaving a knife in a murky, soapy sink full of dishes, the water (and any additives or minerals contained therein), detergent, food particulates, and abrasion/collision with other utensils and dishes can damage the blades and handles.

-HAND WASH IMMEDIATELY: Get a little soapy brush, scrub the knives, rinse them VERY well, wipe them dry, and let them air out a bit. Again, something you'd do with high quality knives.

-Don't be stupid with them. Don't cut soup cans, hammers, bricks, etc. like they do on the informercials. Don't use them as screwdrivers or pry-bars, because they're not. You wouldn't do that with a set of Shun knives, would you?

Basically, treat them like good knives and they'll rise to the occasion. Treat them like kitchen junk, and that's all they'll be. A little care and consciousness goes a long way with these.

If you want a magic knife set that you can abuse, this is not it. Buy a 20 dollar block set from Big Lots for that. If you get these, consider it a training device for someone who might one day invest in a nice $500+ set.

I bought this knife set in order to add to the Six Star+ knives that I already had. Overall, the knives work well. The Ronco Rocker cuts, slices, chops, etc very well. It was pretty much as advertised. The small chef knife works well, also. It slices and chops things with very little effort. The third knife in the set, the paring knife, was not as good as the others. It makes a sound as if there is something loose inside the knife. I do not use this one because of this and also because I already have a Ronco paring knife that I bought a while ago, which is in better shape and does what it is supposed to do.

Shun DM0702 Classic 7-Inch Santoku Knife

Shun DM0702 Classic 7-Inch Santoku KnifeI have a whole set of these blades, so I'm breaking down my review to two parts: Review of the Shun Classic Blades, and the portion as it pertains to this knife in particular.

I actually have this knife in the scalloped version. Although it looks kind of cool, I don't know if it really offers any additional advantage. I would have bought this straight version instead, except, I bought my knives as a set and the scalloped version came in my set.

The 6-1/2 inch knife is a utilitarian knife with many uses. It's definitely one of the steady work horse knives that you'll be reaching for all the time. It's a little on the small side, but perfectly in the middle between the real work horse (an 8" blade) and the smaller utility or paring knife.

Shun knives are beautiful creations period. Since I'm Asian, I love the tradition look and feel of this Japanese knife. I love the beauty of the blade and the dark, polished, Pakkawood handle. The unique "D"-shaped, Wood handles are preferable. The shape fits my hand perfectly, and the wood does not get slippery when wet providing a very secure hold. The steel is of utmost quality and sharpness. Do not put this blade into any old electric knife sharpener! Electric knife sharpeners are made to put one angle on any blade. These blades come with a 16 degree angle and you don't want to be changing that angle. There are electric knife sharpeners that can sharpen these knives, but you'll have to do some research and find out which ones can be a fit with these knives. I prefer to hone with a sharpening steel and manually sharpen with a stone if necessary (and I don't see it being necessary to touch it to a stone any time soon). The blade is sharp straight off the factory and as Alton Brown says it's the sharpest straight out of the factory edge as he's ever seen.

These knives are more expensive than most, but I think it's definitely worth it. To have the sharpest, most beautiful knife around it's no contest. If you are on a budget, build your collection slowly. It's been said that there are only 3 knives that are the absolute basics for any kitchen: A 8" Chef's Knife, a Paring Knife, and a Long Serrated blade for cutting bread and larger items. I would add a thin utility knife and a boning knife to that list next. Then I would add those "in-between" sizes as I get more money flow in. =)

If you plan on spending any time in the kitchen, good kitchen knives are a definite must. Preparation is the bulk of cooking and when you have good knives, it cuts down on the danger of cutting yourself, it adds pleasure to the work, and it cuts down on prep time. Knives are also a very personal choice and it's best to at least go to a store and try it out for yourself first. Shun Knives are designed by the Japanese, so remember it's designed for small hands. This makes it fit most women's hands perfectly, but I've heard of guys with larger hands not like it so much and going back to the German knives. So definitely try it out. It's a personal thing, it needs to fit you.

Why spend so much money on a knife? Well, if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and you almost always have to bust out a knife to prep a meal from scratch why not use the best? Why spend that time with items that you love and brings you pleasure to use? Many times, it's the small things that brings us the most pleasure in life, and I consider my Shun knives as one of those things. Having something so beautiful and yet so sharp and perfect it makes my time cooking just that much more enjoyable.

Another good thing to know is that although the Shun Knives are usually offered for right-handers, you can get these knives for left-handers. You just need to find the guys who stock and sell those ones as they are less known, and less common.

I bought this knife because my hero, Alton Brown recommended them, and as an author who has made a special study of kitchen equipment, I put a bit more weight on it than if the recommendation came from anyone else. I am not disappointed. This knife is sharp beyond imagination. I have an extensive collection of high end German knives, including Santokus and chef's knives, and straight from the package, none of them even come close to this beauty for sharpness. I swear it can cut through relatively robust materials such as raw onions, potatoes, and mangos as if there was nothing there. Shaving the flesh from the mango seed always seems to be something of a struggle with mere mortal knives. Doing this task with this beauty is a dream.

I will not plug the Santoku design, as one's choice between Santoku and French chef's knife for most kitchen tasks may really be a matter of taste and familiarity. Frankly, if it were not for the insanely sharp blade on this knife, I would prefer a chef's knife for many tasks, especially for those veggies where the rocking motion of the French design comes into play.

I will also not wax lyrical about the scalloping, as I really see little advantage to it. I have an unscalloped German Santoku which comes very close in sharpness, and it is the quality of the edge, not the scalloping which makes the difference.

Alright. First read all the other reviews and see what they think. Chances are, they're right.

I've been looking for a knife like this all my life.

I like the thinness of American knives like Chicago Cutlery (the original Walnut, not the cheap ones they sell now), but am envious of the heft of the German knives (I had a full set of Henckels Professionals).

The problem? The thin knives are too light, the heavy ones are too thick.

Now, we have the best of both worlds with Shun.

Wait, I know what you're saying. They're too expensive. No. Listen: if you pick and choose, you can get a lifetime of cutlery pleasure out of just a few samples.

First, buy the 7-inch Santoku. You can get the Granton edge (the scalloped thingies) if you want, but it will just mess up the beauty of the Damascus steel finish. This is your workhorse; a little hotrod that will lightly and competently saw through most of your daily chores.

Then, you need a little parer--the 3-1/2 inch or 4 inch will do nicely.

Big, small.

But, we need bigger still, so get a ten-inch chef's. You'll like this knife. Owing to it's fairly small profile (height), it does double duty as a slicer. Chop up heads of cabbage and slice a turkey or ham, your choice.

Get one of the six-inch slicers (utility or tomato) and you're done.

That's all the expensive cutlery you will ever need.

Anything else: serrated, bread slicers, or other novelty knives, just by cheap stuff.

Now, you need accessories. Get the Shun sharpening steel for sure. It's got a cool magnetic angle on the hilt that supposedly gives you the correct angle for sharpening. You can do it the wussy way--blade down--or pick it up like I do and steel toward yourself in a grand, flourishing manner.

We're not done yet.

You've got a lifetime investment here (You think I'm kidding? Any time you want, send your knife to warranty service and they'll either fix it or send you a brand new one, and they'll always sharpen it. Don't tell them I said so, but that's a pretty sweet way to keep your knives sharpened. I don't think I'd trust any local shop to touch these blades).

But, let's talk wood.

Don't even think about slamming these things down on just any crappy surface. Use a poly board for yucky meat, but you must have a good end grain board for chopping. One word: Boos. Their best (and trust me, I've researched this) is a 12X18 reversible hard maple. Don't be put off by the flatness of this. What I did was buy some little stick-on nylon bumpers and put them on the bottom to prevent sliding and water damage underneath. After, say, ten years, flip it over for a brand new board. If you've got a bigger kitchen, I'm envious, and I recommend the Totally Bamboo 22X16.5 board. It's got feet on it and, hey, it's like a renewable resource to boot.

You know what you'll get for your trouble? The most beautiful ringing sound you've ever heard each and every time you put edge to board. I'm not kidding...it's melodic. And, it protects your knives.

Whichever one you pick, get some Boos Mystery Oil. I don't know what's in it (hey, it's a mystery) but it will keep your rock maple or bamboo boards seasoned and like new for years. Of course, you can use regular mineral oil or some other cooking-safe wood protectant, but that's like, I don't know, just too weird. Not to mention not product-specific.

Finally, one small caveat.

While these Pakkawood handles are truly an exquisite thing (and, despite what they say, NEVER put them in the dishwasher), they have one drawback: they're slippery. There's virtually no ergonomics evident from the hilt to the butt, and, while sleek and sexy-looking--and very comfortable in your hand--they don't provide much traction. On more than one occasion, I've found one of the larger knives sliding right out of my hand. It was frightening to think what devastation these sharp blades could have done to my bare foot as it hit the deck. Maybe I'm just clumsy (or drunk), but as any cook knows, food prep requires a lot of water, and your hands get dried and slick. Be careful. And, I don't know, maybe wear shoes.

But, if you can keep them in your hands (and really, I know you can), you will never for one minute in the rest of your life regret this purchase.

I've been using a Chef's knife (7") for many years, when I went looking for a new blade, I settled on Shun, and I thought I would get one. But when I hefted it, I didn't like it compared to the Santoku. (I've heard it referred to as the Japanese Chef's knife).

So I got the Santoku instead, and I have not regretted it. I like it much better than the traditional (French?) Chef's knife, even for Western-style cooking.

With regards to the Shun Classic....this is a fabulous knife. I've used quite a few Chef's knives, including my friends' Wusthoff and Henkel, and I was not nearly as impressed with those as I was when I first used the Shun Santoku.

This is a very, very sharp edge that is holding up very well.

The few times I prefer not to use the Shun Chinese Chef knife (like for "lighter" duty), I pick up the Santoku.

You may not believe it, but it's so sharp, it doesn't stick to things, that I can chop _much_ faster, with more consistency, almost like the "pros" on TV.

The handle is shaped nicely. The wood is not slippery even when wet, the only drawback...you may not like the shape if you're left-handed, as it is assymetrical.

You gotta try this knife...it is really, really good!

Absolutely the best vegetable knife ever, I do have small hands, and while these are heavy, they are ergonomic and so comfortable to hold. The blade has stayed sharp with months of heavy duty vegetable cutting use and the dishwasher too... I've spent a lot more on german and french knives whose ergonomics don't work for me, and those knives did not hold their edge as long, I just freshen with a sharpening steel every few days so far.

The other reviewer was absolutely right, I am going to forgo a little LCD for my kitchen and will indulge in more of these Shun classic knives instead. Just gave away two knife blocks and their contents ! I can slice 4 lbs of beets to transclucent slices without my hands feeling fatigued -this knife has made cooking a so much fun, I don't groan when I look at that huge pile of veg I picked up at the farm market since I know it will be a breeze to slice thro them. I don't feel compelled to turn to the mandoline as often. I can see how I would want to own and treasure these for a lifetime. Makes me feel silly in the kitchen -can imagine myself in the kitchen stadium iron chefing away almost. I plan on getting the Alton angle set tho, can see how the angle would make this fabulous knife even better! Plus I bought this on Alton Brown's recommendation.

Mundial 5810-8 8-Inch Cook's Knife, BlackGot it for mom on Mother's Day. We love it! It will cut through anything with barely any pressure. Its dishwashable and makes quick work of cutting veggies. My brother works in a butcher shop cutting meat for a living and they will only use Mundial products. Well worth the money. Its the last knife you will ever buy.

Knife rusted within three weeks of use and no dishwasher it is a sharp knife but flimsy and cheap feeling I would. Not recommend

Mac Knife Chef Series Hollow Edge Chef's Knife, 8-InchI have this knife and Shun 10". I prefer the MAC for everyday tasks. It the perfect size and balance. This model is a bit more durable than the MAC mth-80 model. Remember, there is always a tradeoff between sharpness and durability. If you want the sharpest knife, go with the mth-80, but don't cry when you chip the blade. The sharper the knife, usually the harder the metal, hence it is more brittle, but will retain an edge longer.

Of course, you can avoid chips by using the correct tool for the right job, but most people only learn this after they have chipped a couple nice knives. My Shun is definitely a harder and sharper material than my Mac, but it also has a couple large chips from friends.

If I could only take one tool from my kitchen on a desert island, it would be this knife!

My mom has had her MAC knife for over 25 years, it is beat, but still her favorite knife.

THE best knife! Use it for just about everything, except boning. Wound up buying another MAC knife for paring, and will purchase one for cutting chicken, etc., because I love THIS knife SO much!! Stays sharp for what seems like FOREVER and cuts like butter. Absolutely worth every penny. Just remember to wash immediately after using and never, EVER put it in the dishwasher. You'll definitely be pleased you bought it!!

I have been cooking most of my life. I have purchased numerous quality knives at various prices. All the gimmicks, all the "best", all the Top Chef recommended. $600 plus for one. And what knife has lasted and been used over and over with minimum care and attention? This one. A quick honing before and after each use, and I can run down a rack of ribs, slice a tomato, chop and onion, carrot celery and herbs, and turn a pork tenderloin into medallions without ever changing the knife while prepping. While serving I can use it just as easily to carve a bird or roast beef or pork.

When I guest cook or cater this is one of three knives I never forget. The other two are just about any bread knife or paring knife.

Buy it, take care f it, and it will take care of your kitchen needs.

I bought this knife as well as the santoku knife a year ago. They are wonderful to use and I would recommend them to anyone who spends enjoys cooking. My wife thought I was being extravagant when I got them, but she has now made the santoku "her knife" and left me with the cooks. They are both wonderful to work with. We do a lot of chopping. We have a large organic garden and I also like to stir fry. One of our favorite salads is finely chopped lettuce, red sweet pepper, apple, carrot, cucumber and feta cheese. With these knives it's a joy. Do yourself a favor and get at least one MAC knife. In order to keep them at peak sharpness I recommend the porcelain sharpener as well. Remember to clean the sharpener or it stops working.

I decided to spend big bucks and buy one knife to improve my cooking (and make it less of a chore). This knife does the job. Excellent quality, not too heavy or too light. True Fabrications Cheese Board and 4 Cheese Knife SetI have owned several similar cheese sets over the years, and wanted to give one as a Christmas gift. The set I wanted (Picnic Time Circo Cheese Set) was sold out, and so I bought this set instead. There were no reviews, but I thought "How different can they be?" My mistake!

When I removed the plastic to wrap it, I couldn't separate the two parts to expose the tools. The other boards I've owned opened with a hinge or had a drawer. After pulling and prying with no luck, I noticed a screw in the bottom of the board. After lossening it didn't work, I pulled it out all the way. Turns out that the board is just two *separete* pieces that you're supposed to balance together!!

There is nothing like a hinge or pin connecting the top and bottom. I thought maybe this was so the top could be used itself, but it has a small strip of wood where it meets the bottom, so it can't even stand on it's own! It has to be balanced precariously over the bottom piece. There isn't even a notch or anything to help them balance.

On top of all that, the tools are cheap and not helpful. The Picnic Time and Trudeau sets both have cheese slicers and good quality knives. This set is simply different size spreaders. Not very useful.

In short, do NOT buy this inferior product. It's no cheaper than much better, more useful sets. I've returned mine, and will be gifting the Picnic Time set a few days late. It's worth it.

This is perfect for that afternoon wine-tasting tour. Pack your crackers and cheese. Everything you need is right at your fingertips...very compact. It's a great gift item as well.

I have other products by Best Manufacturers and have been quite happy with them so far. However, this pastry blender has not quite lived up to the name. I like the handle and long upright position but the the flat bottom has only hindered my success in adequately cutting fat into the dry mixture. In a round bowl the cutting blades don't fully make contact with the surface, leaving butter somewhat untouched and sometimes taking some pretty deep gouges out of the bowl surface. If the bottom had a more rounded cutting area this would be the perfect product for me. Until then, I am going to need to look somewhere else.

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13-Piece Knife Block SetThis was a gift from our wedding registry. And I did read the less than impressive reviews of the set and yet decided to go with it 1) because of the price, (2) these received the relatively better reviews for a Henckels set (3) one-piece stamped steel construction. My husband was in the restaurant suply business for 7 years, and he is no fan of the Henckels International line but I succumbed to the draw of the little man (in the co. logo) without whom, I believe for the moment, no kitchen is complete. Since we received them, even my skeptical husband has gotten fond of them. They are not 'cheap looking', 'prone to rusting' (with proper knife handling, of course), 'thin blade'd, as some have opined here. We don't have a grand chef's kitchen operation running at our house and for us, these are great. With low to moderate use, regular hand cleaning and wiping down, they are still like new. They feel just right in terms of weight and look great. We have an extra pair of henckels kitchen shears that we were able to put in the block that had a compartment for it.

UPDATE: Nov 26, 2012: Just wanted to report back that our knives are still going strong. No rust. No dullness that the (included) sharpening steel doesn't address.

I was looking for a set of good quality knives as I am upgrading my kitchen equipment and I ran across these in Dillards Dept store. The knives were on sale so I was not sure about them. I was familiar with the brand but didn't know much. I purchased them and they are wonderful! The Chef's knife won't disappoint and I was upset that I had not gotten a set of good knives before it would make my cooking life so much easier. The knives look pretty too with my stainless steel. They are attractive. The blades are so sharp and the steak knives cut steak like it's butter. I recommend them to anyone looking for a nice set of cutlery.

I love these new knives. However, even though it says *Dishwasher safe--don't do it. Take really good care of these knives and they will last a life time. The chef's knife cuts through a lemon like butter...you will really like them.

First off before you go off and buy this knife set you have to realize this is the cheap version of the J.A. Henckels....hence the International. Although Amazon description says High Grade German Steel it is not. These knifes are made in China.

Some reviews here people complain of rusting ect. Now these knifes might indeed rust, but some care must be taken with them. I have had mine over 1 year now, and they have held up perfectly. I cant complain. I have taken good care of my knifes. They dont go in the dish washer, they dont stay wet very long soaking in the sink. I use them, wash and dry them and keep them sharp. The are still a very sharp

I have used and held the high end Henckels and these are a far cry from them...but so is the price. You will pay $300 or more. Twin Cuisine is a very very nice set, feels heavy and solid. The Fine edge synergy are light and thin, almost feel like they might break. Not a knife you want to take with you to a knife fight. However for the price they cant be beat. If your looking for Henckles high quality knifes go spend the extra money and dont get the International version. If your looking for a cheap good knife set that will last a long time with extra care, you cant go wrong with this set.

I dont regret ever buying this set however next time I will get a set like the Twin Cuisine's.

Wusthof Gourmet 5-1/2-Inch Tomato Knife

Wusthof Gourmet 5-1/2-Inch Tomato KnifeI recently found a replacement on Amazon.com for my 10 yr old overused and often re-sharpened Wusthof Gourmet tomato knife. I was amazed at the low price of $29 when this knife in retail stores has been on sale for $55 or $60. Now I know why. The blade itself is the same as the original blade, but the handle is just a groved piece of plastic or composite with rivets holding the flat blade in place-the same a any other cheap knife found at discount stores. I think I bought a $29 knife for $29not the great deal I thought it was and it doesn't exactly match the handles of my "Classic" Wusthhof knife set. But I'm certainly not sending it back. It works really well, just like the original one-just a little more cheaply made.

I know it seems excessive to buy an entire knife just for tomatoes ... but it's gotten to the point where I buy tomatoes JUST to be able to use this knife I love it so much. It slices through the fruit's skin as effortlessly as through softened butter, while other knives (even my other razor sharp Wusthof ones) just bruise and squish the fruit. Definitely worth the cost. I just bought a second one as a gift!

Have had this knife for a while now and have to say that for slicing tomatoes and other veggies like cukes etc this knife cannot be beat. It is the right knife for that task. You can slice a tomato paper thin to beefstake thick and the slices are perfect and clean everytime! The only negative comment I have is that the handle (as on all newer gourmet series knives from Wusthof) seems to be more light-weight and somewhat cheaper. Not that this ruins the performance of the knife...it is more an esthetic / ergonomic thing. Thus four stars instead of five. I hand wash all of my good knives so it will never see the dishwasher so i doubt the handle will ever become an issue.

This knife allows you to thinly slice delicate fruits and vegetables without tearing. I can achieve a near paper thin slice of tomato with it, which makes this worth every penny to me.

This is a high-end home or semi-pro grade knife. It's stamped instead of forged, which cut some of the costs between this and the high end Classic series. For me that is not a problem due to the nature of the knife. Had I been in the market for a chef's knife I would have spent the extra money and purchased a forged knife. I will say that this one holds a razor sharp edge as well as some forged knives that I own.

It is also missing the bolster that forged knives have, so it does not have the balance of a high-end knife, but for what it was designed to do that is not necessary. It's light, easy to use and the handle provides a nice, no slip gripping surface.

I love the way this knife holds its edge. Some of that is due to the serrated blade, but it's also because the quality of the steel used for the blade is the same quality that the forged models use. In fact I need to insert a caution: you need to be careful when using and cleaning this knife because the blade is extremely sharp. Make sure you store this in a block or roll too because this is not a knife you want loose in a drawer it can inflict a nasty cut if you accidentally grab it by the wrong end while rummaging through a drawer.

One final note: this, like all serrated blade knives, is designed to be used in a pulling motion in order to obtain the thin slices as well as safety when you are holding a tomato while cutting. The reason I mention this is because I've had guests who have assisted me in cooking use this knife with a pushing motion and it does not perform nearly as well.

This is a quality knife that should last a lifetime if you properly care for it. On the stamped vs. forged issue, I personally do not think there is a difference when it comes to some specialty knives like this one.

Victorinox 46892 Fibrox 3-Piece Chef's Knife SetAfter searching stores looking for a knife set I began researching online. I found this set and was a bit reluctant. They didn't come with a knife block, they didn't have wooden handles, and the brand wasn't ringing a bell. But they were rated so highly, and the comments so positive, I decided to take a chance. They are AMAZING! Manufactured by the company that makes Swiss Army Knives, they are beautifully made. These three knives will do virtually anything you need done in the kitchen, so you don't really need more knives. They have excellent weight, good balance, and the grip feels ergonomic. While priced at the low end for good knives, you feel you are using the Mercedes of knives. This is a great set for anyone who loves cooking or quality. And as an aside, I was happy to have to find an alternative to the knife block. I got a strip magnet, and it is so much better!

I just purchased this knife set for my son for Christmas, after reading good reviews. The knives have met all my expectations so far. They are very sharp, and the fibrox handles are substantial, non-slip, and comfortatble. The first test was 4 butternut squash my son volunteered to peel and cut up for Christmas dinner. Cutting hard squash is a task I don't look forward to, but the paring knife did the peeling, and the chef's knife did the chopping, with no problem. I then borrowed the paring knife to cut up an onion, and was amazed at how easily it went through the onion compared to the Chicago Cutlery I've used for years. For less than $50, I'm ready to buy another set for myself!

I just got mine and love 'em! I've been through a few bargain knives; most recently low-end Henkles; the blades were thin, badly sized, and didn't stay sharp long. I expected a little better but was pleasantly surprised! The look of them is professional but basic, not a showy knife, but they are much better than anything I've seen retail at comparable prices. They're an excellent weight and above par materials. I used all three knives immediately and they performed extremely well. The handles fit the hand comfortably and knuckles never knock the cutting board. The material of the handles is excellent. When cooking, my hands are damp but my grip stayed secure. Vegetables practically slid apart and the slicing knife cut bread with no tearing. I have never found knives at this price point that are this quality. The 10" chef's knife in the three piece set is bigger than might be necessary in many homes, but it's fine for me and a minor complaint. Besides, although substantial, it's not as heavy as a forged knife would be and that's a good thing. I couldn't have gotten the desired pieces individually at this price so I have no complaints except that I wish the line was available locally!

Update: 08/08-Four Months later and few complaints. The blades have dulled a bit, but work well. They remain straight, even and manage most jobs well. I'm looking for a proper sharpener. I did find the knives locally at The Cook's Warehouse and picked up the 8" chef's knife there. Good knife too!

Update 09/15/2010 The often used chefs knife has not survived. It wasn't possible to keep it sharp and the cutting edge got notched. (Hand washed, kept the blade from other objects and surfaces other than the cutting board etc, etc. Who knows, bones or seeds I guess.) It last served to dig out the epoxy from a sink I had to replace and will land in the garbage. I got two years from it. I'm not a fan of things like this being disposable. It's a waste of money and resources. I'm going to try to find a life long knife next time. Dealing with a dull knife then replacing every couple of years just isn't efficient.

I purchased these with the need for affordable knives, and I saw the perfect review score for this set on Amazon (18/18 reviews at 5 stars). I figured I couldn't go wrong.

I didn't.

Obviously the most important trait of a knife is how sharp it is. These are simply the sharpest knives I have ever used. I've used cheap ones that cheat and use a serration to achieve sharpness, and I've used pricier Henkels and similar. A sharper knife is actually a safer knife, since your cuts will be precise. A duller knife won't cut where you expect and can cause injuries that way. To give an idea of how sharp these are, I was able to easily slice a bagel without using a saw motion at all. Not impressed? I did the same with a ripe tomato. Yes, slicing a tomato with just pressing down. I'd never been able to do that with the Henkels even after a fresh sharpening. These knives have made so many kitchen tasks so much easier.

What's even better is that for the price of that Henkels chef knife, you get 3 of the most useful knives to have in the kitchen. This price is simply amazing for what you get.

Well, nothing is perfect and unfortunately these knives are no exception. After being used to the Henkels chef knife, this Forschner was startlingly lightweight. I know that over time I will adjust for it, but I would have liked more weight I suppose. I would just suggest that until you're used to the weight, just be extra careful with the chef's knife. All said, this is such a minor setback for how amazing these knives are otherwise.

There is a reason why these knives have so many 5 star ratings. They are simply that good. For the cost, there is no way you will regret buying them. I purchased these on a budget, and down the road when money isn't an issue, I'll be looking first at Forcshner/Victorinox.

I was not able to open a single can with this product. It is described as "tall" but it was much shorter than the one I was replacing. It was also so light that it kept falling over as I continued to try to get it to work. I returned this product.

These worked well in a sdience fair project that my son undertook to demonstrate different rates of decomposition using different types of products that are biodegradable. However, if you are going to do a similar thing, these decompose very slowly so give yourself at least 6 weeks to see the decomposition.

Purchased Ginsu Koga Series knife set. Received set marked Marquee and Made in China. Where it was made wasn't that important to me but not being the correct series caused me to return it. One if the smaller knives was plain and didn't even have the stamped embossing.The only thing marked Koga was the knife block.

this is a nice set of knives, but they are not what they seem to be.

1. 420J2 budget quality stainless steel (doesn't hold edge well, but durable)

2. these are not japanese blades :

A. the blade is printed made in china

B. the patterning is actually stamped into the metal as oppose the metal was "worked" (fake pattern)

C. claim to be forged but I highly doubt that due to the false pattern

3. the sheers don't separate

Knowing all that and you just want a knife set thats about a 100 bucks (bought as lightning deal) not a bad deal
