Ergo Chef Universal Edge Guard (Narrow 7.5", Red)

Ergo Chef Universal Edge GuardThis knife guard is just what you need to keep your fancy and sharp knives performing at their best and you safe.

I love these knife blade covers. I had purchased one a few years back and decided I needed them for the knives I recently purchased so when they are in the drawer, the blades do not dull or cut someone. I love the colors; they are not just ugly and black or grey.

Chef's Choice 210 Hybrid Diamond Hone Knife Sharpener, White and Black

Chef's Choice 210 Hybrid Diamond Hone Knife Sharpener, White and BlackThis is a very affordable electric sharpener, and is easy to use. I do find that hand-honing my knives with my steel does work out better than the hone on the sharpener. Although a water stone or tri-hone is a better choice, if you have knives you just don't want to take that much time with, and you don't want to spend much money on a sharpener, this is a good choice.

Best knife sharpener that I have ever had! Use it for all of our kitchen knives and the knives we use to process the White Tail Deer that we harvest. The right side "touch up" feature is excellent! Makes the knives really sharp so be careful. Buy this!

Buy Chef's Choice 210 Hybrid Diamond Hone Knife Sharpener, White and Black Now

I received this yesterday and could not be more satisfied. I sharpened all of my kitchen, hunting, and pocket knifes within a couple of hours. This would have taken days with stones. It does have a learning curve so start with an old knife and follow the directions. If you buy one and it doesn't work, then you are not doing it correctly. It took me a few times to get it right but now I can get them razor sharp. I have a bandage on my finger to prove it.

I would have given it 5 stars but it does not work well with thick hunting knives (I have two Buck knives) because the slot is barely wide enough to fit the blade. I got them sharpened but it took some finesse.

Great product, great price, and made in the USA.

**Update**

I've owned this sharpener for about two months and I still love it. I finally used my hunting knives cleaning a whitetail deer and they worked flawlessly. They cut clean and did not loose their edge.

The non mechanical slot works great for touching up your knives through repeated use.

I recently saw this same sharpener in Bass Pro Shop for $50 plus shipping. Can't beat Amazon!!

I do have a correction: it is ASSEMBLED in the USA, not manufactured. Oh well, better than all in China.

It was not awesome but worked the first 4 times. Now it doesnt do anything at all. I also agree with another reviewer about the knife not getting enough edge close to the handle. I would not recommend buying this.

My father was a butcher and I've still got several of his professional knives (he passed away more than 25 years ago). I've used a Chef's Choice sharpener for many years on these knives and they still have the same sharp edge my father obtained with his professional sharpening stone (which I find difficult to use). My old sharpener had an electric honing side, which I was never particularly fond of, so I was happy to find my new sharpener had a manual side for that. I've not experienced any of the issues some others have, but I've only used the sharpener for about a month, and that's been mainly to hone.

Update International KGE-04 Stainless Steel Forged Curved Blade Boning Knife, 6-Inch

Update International KGE-04 Stainless Steel Forged Curved Blade Boning Knife, 6-InchLike the rest of the Update cutlery series, the 6" curved boning knife is a well engineered tool. Thinner and more flexible than the straight 6" version (as it should be). Traditional construction using industry standard materials includes German high carbon stainless steel forged blade with bolster, full tang and triple riveted "Pom" polymer (Polyoxymethylene)handle. My local Asian supermarket(and many restaurant suppliers) stock an assortment of Update International knives from well under ten dollars to just over twenty (really). At those prices I would rate with six stars for the value ! Compare to Henkel Int. forged series

Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 4-Piece Steak Knife Set

Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 4-Piece Steak Knife SetThese knifes are excellent value. They are razor sharp when received and stay that way with a few strokes of a sharpner, after or before each use. The ony thing is these knifes are not drop forged, they are stamped steel, but are of excellent quility. One last thing do not put these knifes in the dishwasher it will damage the handles and the blades. Hand wash them only. I would recommend these knifes to anyone on a budget as a very good product for a very reasonable price.

My mother-in-law had Chicago Cutlery (still has the same set in daily use, actually), and that is what my husband grew up with. He liked the feel and recognized the excellent quality, so in 1998 when he moved out, we went to the Chicago Cutlery store and spent about two hours there, handling knives, choosing a set. This was one of our first dates, actually, and I liked the knives enough to marry the guy. :-) A couple of years ago, two of the steak knifes snapped off just above the handle. Eventually I got around to contacting the company for replacements, and the process was very easy and quick, and they simply sent a set of four. Our old set was "Metropolitan" in black, but these new knifes didn't look the same. They are, in fact, very different. They are shaped very differently. Everything is lighter the handles are much lighter and feel like plastic instead of slate, the rivets are thinner, and the blades are SIGNIFICANTLY thinner. The blades are so thin, that in the first couple of days, the tips actually bent, and easily bent back. They do not hold an edge for long at all. After a couple of weeks, they just became the utility knives I use for cutting oranges, or those shrinky plastic seals on the salad containers. If I need to say, cut a steak, I put it back in the block and grab an old knife, or one of the Cutco knives I brought to the marriage. I know our favorite consumer magazine just gave these knives a good review, but I have to disagree. They are just this side of useless, and we would never buy anything like this new. If you are shopping based on the reputation of Chicago Cutlery, know that these are not the knives that reputation was built on.

Buy Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 4-Piece Steak Knife Set Now

These seem to be well made, and I would expect them to last a long time. I can't imagine the riveted handles ever breaking like cheap knives sometimes do. Compared to a lot of knives, these were very reasonably priced. The only negative to them is, the blades weren't overly sharp from the factory. A couple of swipes over the hone and that took care of that.

Fred and Friends Sharp Act Knife Sharpener

Fred and Friends Sharp Act Knife SharpenerThe Fred & Friends Sharp Act Knife Sharpener is a funny little kitchen gadget to have. But if you do cook a lot and use your knives a lot you might want to reconsider this purchase. The actual knife sharpener doesn't really do that great of a job and there isn't any way to replace it or take it apart if anything happens. It's just a large piece of cheap plastic with a tiny tiny area for actual knife sharpening. Funny, but not practical.

An amusing product. It seems to be working, but not to the point where it thoroughly gets the job done.

Amco Classic Spreaders, Stainless Steel Blades, Set of 4

Amco Classic Spreaders, Stainless Steel Blades, Set of 4I ordered these from Amazon just before Thanksgiving because I needed to take some hors' d'oeuvres to Thanksgiving dinner. I had some various high-end cheese spreads. Thanksgiving this year was going to be a little bit formal and I realized that I didn't have any little spreaders. I went to Amazon, looked up spreader and found these. I ordered it and it got here quickly. These worked out great and they are nice looking. I recommend them. Good price, too!

These are the best little butter knives I could find on the internet or at any retail store and the price was fantastic. They are not quite as decorative as I had originally hoped to find, but they look nice and have a good weight to them. At first I was just looking for a few decorative knives to put out with the butter dishes at our large family holiday meals. Then I found these cute little knives, and marked down to boot! I bought 4 packages (4 per package) and now I'll just put one out with each place setting.

These spreaders are made of two partsthe handle and the spreader. When I opened them and took them out of the package two of the spreaders were pulled right apart. 2 of 4 spreaders were broken when sent to me. I would not recommend this product and would have returned it if I didn't have to pay for shipping.

These spreaders are not knives for cutting with and are not supposed to be large. As spreaders, they are the correct size. They are stylish and are made from good quality materials. I especially like the seamless, one-piece construction (no separately attached handles with the potential to eventually loosen and/or fall off as I've experienced). These spreaders wash and polish well, looking especially nice placed next to my large glass covered cheese tray. These spreaders are nice enough to use for any occasion. I shopped around before buying and would purchase these again.

Oneida Brahms 3-Piece Child Flatware Set

Oneida Brahms 3-Piece Child Flatware SetLike a couple of other reviewers, I bought this set for myself. However, I didn't buy them to slow down my eating. They are part of my lunch kit, which includes a reusable plate. I like that I can visit a salad bar and not waste plastic utensils.

I hope the company sees that these aren't just for kids, and starts making the butter knives serrated. That's the only thing that would make this set even better. Right know the knives are useless,

Cutco Cutlery Paring Knife 2 3/4" blade Like New

Cutco Cutlery Paring Knife 2 3/4' blade Like New
  • USA Made
  • Forever Guarantee
  • Free Factory Sharpening/Replacement
  • Ergonomic Handles
  • High Grade Steel

To be fair, I did not actually spend my own money on this cutco paring knife. I have experience with one that's been "in the family" for a little while. Aside from my experience with this paring knife, my sister also owns an entire block set of cutco knives, which I have sharpened for her(I know cutco sharpens them for you, but in all frankness, I know I can do a better job, and I didn't charge her anything either:). From my experience with all of the cutco knives, I have 3 solid quality and performance criticisms which have nothing to do with the gimmicky way the company operates.

1. To my understanding, cutco uses 440A stainless steel in their blades hardened to 56HRC. 440A is such a cheap steel, there is absolutely no justification for the price point. There are a plethora of knives made by reputable knife companies(using far superior steels over 440A)selling at a much lower price point than these exorbitantly expensive cutco knives. The wonderful Wusthof Gourmet 3" paring knife is one such example:Wusthof 4022 Gourmet 3-Inch Paring Knife

2.Also, 56 on the rockwell scale is way too soft for a decent kitchen knife. You really want something at least approaching 59 or 60 for it to have decent edge holding capabilities. And no, it will not be impossible to resharpen at this hardness.

3. Cutco kitchen knives are hollow ground. This edge geometry is not ideal for the average slicing task in the kitchen. A fully flat ground profile is much preferred(the only better edge geometry, other than a fully flat ground blade, would be that of the traditional Japanese single ground edges as seen in the usuba or yanagiba as used by sushi chefs). The advantage of a hollow ground knife is that it allows for a thicker spine(thickness = strength) relative to the fine edge. However, this quality is completely unnecessary in a kitchen knife, unless you plan on using yours to dig a grave or pry open tin cans.

Aside from these 3 basic criticisms, the price point of cutco knives is an enormous turn off. Honestly, the quality of the steel used in them is no better than what you will find in the cheapest knife available at your local wal-mart. As I mentioned above, there are so many good knives made with decent and superior steels(x50CrMov15, aus8A, vg10, etc...), why would you buy a knife made with such a cheap underwhelming steel for the price that they are sold for? The price tag that should be placed on this cutco paring knife? I do think that the construction and handle materials are decent, so, for that alone, I suppose it might be worth 5~10 dollars. However, since the knife won't perform well, that really doesn't matter... so, to me, its not even worth a couple bucks...

Update:

The cutco pairing knife uses 440A steel and the wusthof pairing knife(mentioned above) uses a steel called x50CrMov15. Here is further clarification as to why the Cutco pairing knife loses when compared side by side with the wusthof:

To start with, I must go into a little detail about the steels employed in both knives.

440A tends to contain impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus which make the steel more brittle. X50CrMov15, as far as I am aware, does not. If it does, the quantity is much less. X50CrMov15 has a roughly .15% vanadium content. Vanadium is a carbide former and increases wear resistance and hardenability. Also, vanadium refines the grain structure of the steel, which aids in its toughness and ease of re-sharpening; this means it will allow the steel to take and hold a sharper edge. This is the biggest difference between 440A and x50CrMov15. Although 440A has a higher chromium content, which may give it better corrosion resistance, since chromium forms large complex carbides, it tends to hinder sharpenability. Since any steel with 11~13% chromium is considered "stainless," the 16~18% chromium content in 440A compared with the 14.5% in x50CrMov15 is arguably too much in the application of a kitchen knife(also, I have seen rust spots on many cutco knives...and though this is easily removed, as it is with any "stainless" steel, the increased chromium really does nothing but harm).

Now, depending on the heat treatments/temperings and such there can be a certain amount of difference from one knife with the same steel to another, as it is with all steels. For this reason, please be advised that all pairing knives using x50CrMoV15 may not perform identically one to another. However, in the way that wusthof has treated the steel in this knife, x50CrMov15 seems perfect for a pairing knife because of the following reasons:

1. Ease of sharpening. The wusthof pairing knife I own is one of the easiest knives to re-sharpen. It doesn't take very long for me to touch it up.

2. Excellent sharpenability. In addition to its ease of sharpening, the sharpenaibility means it can take a scary sharp edge.

3. Though x50crMov15 is not the toughest steel out there, in its application for a paring knife, it is perfect. Since a paring knife rarely touches a hard surface such as a cutting board(wood or otherwise) and is primarily used for peeling or detailed work against a relatively soft media such as a fruit or vegetable, it really doesn't dull quickly even when the knife is so thin(which makes it an absolutely magnificent slicer/peeler etc... it just cuts through so easily).

In contrast, the hollow ground profile of the cutco pairing knife combined with its thicker spine do not suit its intended purpose, and if you use them side by side, the difference is astounding. Also, as I mentioned before, the Cutco pairing knife is really hard to get razor sharp..., and when you get it, my experience is that it doesn't maintain that razor sharpness very long.... Which goes along with the analysis of the steels I provided above. I'm just not happy with the steel or the blade geometry. Also, the cost makes the wusthof pairing knife a much better buy in contrast to the cutco. The wusthof is a better knife, it works better, is significantly cheaper, uses better steel, has a better grind for its purpose... what more can I say? That's all...just one user's opinion. Your experiences may very, and I respect those that would rather purchase a USA made product. I hope my data points and opinions have been informative to some:)

I love this little knife. It was sharp when I got it and is sharp a year later. I have other $9 paring knives that just take up space in the drawer. This one feels good and is very sharp exactly what I want in a paring knife.

Ok, it lost a star for price. I don't mind paying more for nice knives but paring has always been more worker bee than shining star in my kitchen.

I was thrilled to find a replacement Cutco paring knife after mine disappeared and I felt lost in the kitchen. Best knives ever!

The paring knife is beyond awesome. It keeps the edge for a super long time, and the handle feels great in my hands compared to the normally short and stubby paring knife handles. Coming from a rep, however, I would suggest the 4" paring knife that is also from cutco, but costs only $2 more than the 2 3/4" one. That being said, it is also much cheaper to get it straight from the manufacturers. If you want to know more about it, contact me at hokuwong@gmail.com. Pick one up for yourself and feel the difference.

OXO Good Grips Meat Tenderizer

OXO Good Grips Meat TenderizerVery excellent product. A good weight to it for really tenderizing whatever meat you are preparing (chicken, steak, etc...) The two-sided mallot works well, where you can use the flat side on chicken so as not to make a mess, and the dimpled side does a great job on tougher meats like beef to really tender them up. I would highly recommend this item and given the choice I would definitely buy it again.

I used this for several years, and it is fine for what it is. I like the handle, but the head is a bit small, which can tear the meat.

I've since replaced it with the i-series version, which I like a lot better:

Let us be clear, if you're going to take the time to cook in your kitchen, you know a few items must need cleaning afterwards, right? Some more than others. For all those people complaining about this tool not being able to withstand the rigors that a dishwasher can dish out, here's a novel idea straight from the confines of common sense. We've all seen the little, brightly-colored spray bottles in bins at grocery stores, mega-stores and such. Fill one with half and half water and bleach, have it within reach . . . that is, just at about ankle level below the sink your standing at, spray the item to be washed and sanitized to your satisfaction (be liberal if you choose to) and then rest assured you've done everything possible under the sun to have your tight little niche of the world as "restaurant-clean and safe" as any four or five star eatery closely managed by astute folks not wanting to lose their job because of some health department oversight on their part. It's not that we are too lazy to get there, it's just that it's been such a long day with bending and such. And the heat in the kitchen, oh my! Next topic, please!

Besides the foregoing lesson, the thing works great as it should. It will pound meat all day long with the best of them and at a very reasonable price too. OXO rocks significantly!

I am yet another fan of OXO Good Grips products. The meat tenderizer is another good product. It is very ergonomic, and it's heavy/solid so that you don't have to pound as hard as you would with more lightweight tenderizers.

I don't like the fact that you can't put it in the dishwasher, but really, scrub it with some anti-bacterial dish soap and you're all set. After shopping at several home product stores in search of a tenderizer, I came back to the OXO Good Grips because I found it the best, in spite of not being able to put it in the dishwasher.

Wusthof Garlic Press

Wusthof Garlic PressThis is the only garlic press I've found in about 15 years of searching that: 1. Always works, 2. Cleans up easily, and most importantly, 3. I can't break it. I'll never buy any other kind of press. It's a bit spendy by comparison with some other models; but well worth the price. There are a fine screen and a coarse screen, I always use the coarse screen, though the fine one works well too. We use about 2 entire bulbs (not cloves) of garlic per week. This press stands up to the work -for about 7 years now, with no problems.

First, without a doubt, this is the best garlic press I have ever used. It is very sturdy, has a nice feel, is easy to clean, and works well on the first go. The only problem arises when you need to press more than one load of food because of the removable baskets. They tend to pop out with each use. This isn't much of a problem when you have two hands to spare or if you only need a small amount of garlic or other food pressed. However, if you're trying to press a lot of food fast or if you have a baby in one arm and are trying to work one handed it can get rather annoying. Though that does knock it down a star for me, I still really like the baskets. This works very well in different dishes and with different ingredients being pressed. Most of all, it makes the press very easy to clean because when you remove the baskets there aren't any cracks and crevices that can be a real pain to clean in other presses.

But then comes the reason I would not recommend this particular tool. The company, apparently to save a dime in production and make a dollar in sales, opted to only put one stone on both sides of the white ceramic hone. Since the tool was designed to fit two stones one gets chatter when honing. Might not seem like much of a problem but when one is trying to get the ultimate edge this drives me nuts. The cheaper model works great for a quick sharpening of kitchen knives that have lost a bit of edge.

This is the best knife sharpener I have ever used, and that includes electric sharpeners. The large handel gives stability and safety while the wheels form an ever changing abrasive surface. This is the second of these sharpeners that I have purchased.

I had bought a few other sharpeners, all different attempts to accomplish the same general idea...getting my knives sharpened. So far i'd have to say that this product is better & easier than those others by a mile. It really doesn't take long to get the blade sharpened which is perfect.

I got this for my mom. I had boughten one just like this several years before and loved it and I still have it (same brand). She used it a few times and when I used it to sharpen her knifes one of the white sharpeners chipped off and is now useless. They must be making these cheaper because mine seems very durable.

Pure Komachi 2 Series Serrated Multi-Utility Knife

Pure Komachi 2 Series Serrated Multi-Utility KnifeThis knife is great when you want to trim the excess fat from any meat before preparation. Using any stroke, small or large removes fat effortlessly from roasts, chops, steaks, etc.. No 'hacking' necessary and the lightest of touches gets the job done. If you need sharp knives at lower, affordable costs, the Komachi line is the one for you. These are the makers of the Shun line of knives and you can send these knives in once a year for FREE sharpening. These are inexpensive enough to have 2 sets, one set to send in for sharpening and the other set to keep and use while the dulled ones are away for resharpening. These prices are less that the retail store, by about $3.00 each. Just keep in mind that these knives are razor sharp and fairly lightweight so you must be careful at all times.

I'd say 4 inches of the blade are not serrated so it's good for slicing. The thin tip is flexible which enables you to remove the skin from fish easily. I also think this is an ideal knife for deveining shrimp. However, I don't think this knife is the correct size or shape for comfortably mincing vegetables. As long as you have a chef's knife in addition to this knife in your kitchen, you're pretty much set. (According to the Charlie Trotter book, Knife Skills: In the kitchen, you'll want a bread knife too because you don't want to dull sharp blades on crunchy bread crusts).

When I ordered it I thought the entire blade would be serrated, however it is not. The half closest to the handle is serrated while the other half is a straight edge knife. I enjoy the multi-utility knife, now that I know what it is! I mainly use it to cut fruits and vegetables and it works great.

If you are in need of a sharp knife, it is very hard to beat these Komachi blades.

They are our favorite new kitchen implement. We purchased our first one a few months back,

and since have gradually advanced to purchasing the whole set. They outperform all the

other blades in our blocks, including German products costing 10 times as much.
