Dexter DuoGlide 5-Inch Mini Chef's Knife, Made of High Carbon Steel with Soft Grip Handle

I purchased this knife for my mom who has arthritis and ordered one for myself at the same time. I liked it so well I ordered one for my college age daughter. It's easy on the hands and performs well. Chopping and dicing is no longer such a chore!

I purchased the 8" Dexter knife 2 years ago when I was having a lot of pain in my hands. Prepping for a nice meal was agony. I eased off other things that would strain my hands, which helped, but this knife allowed me to continue cooking fairly complex meals. This is the BEST KNIFE! And at a very good price. The 5" works well for smaller chopping, dicing jobs. The 8" knife is great for bigger jobs, including carving meat and chopping/slicing larger vegetables or larger quantities. I am so grateful for products like this which help people as they age and joints wear thin. Now I'm buying a second 5" one and a second 8" so that my husband and I can cook together without any hand pain. I like the 5" one for smaller jobs like dicing garlic, slicing avocado, etc. They also are very durable, the handle is water tight and comfortable. If you care well for it, you do not need to sharpen it for a really long time.

Chicago Cutlery Landmark 12-Piece Knife Set with Block

Like another reviewer, I was swayed by the recommendations of CR. Unlike several of the other reviewers, I have not yet experienced the problems encountered by them. So far, no rust spots, but I hand wash & dry immediately after use. When the set arrived the block, while not exceptional, was undamaged, and again, so far, the guides have not come loose. Perhaps customer complaints have led to a resolution to this problem?

Having never had a "real" set of knives to compare these to makes a ranking difficult. However, I am satisfied for the return on the money I spent. On a further, note, my daughter, who is in culinary school, stated that these knives are a little on the lightweight side, but the balance (feel) appears good, and that they cut very well.

UPDATE: I've had this set a year now. So far no problems and I am very satisfied with my purchase. I've had no rust: I DON'T put 'em in the dishwasher; I hand wash & dry immediately. I still hold to my initial assessment: This set is a good, not great, value for the money.

I like the knives. The sharpener works well. These are hand-wash-only knives. Take good care of them and they will take good care of you.

For $100+ I was surpised that they were Chinese made. The block is ok not up to German, American or Japanese/Korean standards (slight imperfections). The knives are well designed and with proper care sharp and very good to work with.

I would have preferred American Made (Chicago cutlery used to be 100% American Made) but that would probably have been 3-5x the price.

Overall I am happy with the knives and will tolerate the imperfect block with it.

They were great, until I washed them. Now they have little brown spots all over them. It looks like rust to me. Since you kind of need to wash your knives now and again, I would say to avoid these. Unless you're looking for a good, rusty knife, then they're the tops.

After revewing knife sets and checking CR recommendations I decided to purchase this set. CR said that Chicago cutlery was the way to go if you do not want to spend a small fortune on knifes that were still of decent quality.

This is the first time I buy something that did not have a review and the first time I write a review because I was so upset with the quality. The knife are not sharp, and they rust and the block is cumbersome and the inserts that hold the knifes come out it was actually missing one when it arrived.

I hastened to open it and set it up before I noticed, otherwise, if I still had the box, I would have returned it.

This knife set for a new product, is very diappointing. I'm returning mine. Out of the box it looked cheap. I agree with other reviewer that the little plastic inserts on the block don't stay in. You have to peal if off the knife everytime you pull a knife out, to put it back on the block-CC needs to try some glue to hold them in. CC makes much nicer sets for less money-this would be a hassle to use to use and why pay more a poorer set?

It is easy to get confused, especially when semi-impulse shopping. My husband and are moving, so we were new home shopping. We ordered some ceramic knives for the kitchen, and then this product popped up. Oh hooray, something to keep our ceramic knives sharp let's get it! The sharpeners are made of ceramic, they are not fr ceramic. If you read the name really carefully it is easy to see that. But we were not reading carefully, we are excited about out move.

DO NOT PULL YOUR CERAMIC KNIVES THROUGH THIS!

It is effective on regular knives though. I have a Kershaw that I hadn't sharpened in years. It took a few pull thrus, but now it is just as sharp as it was when I got it. When shopping it is always a good idea to read the product details, so shop smart.

Finally, I can get a good edge on all my Global knives. Nice to have a sharpener with the proper angle for those. I was surprised at the heft this sharpener is sturdy. The rubber footing and grip make it exceptionally comfortable to use. Still small enough to store easily and simple to see and control the way you're sharpening knives. Glad I bought it.

That's the whole reason I bought it. I tried it with my ceramic chef's knife and the ceramic blade chipped in three places. I don't know if it was the knife or the sharpener, but there went one of my knives down the drain. Guess it's ok on my regular knives, but I would have purchased a different one for just regular knives.

I luv this Buddy Knife. It is great for brownies. I am sure it is great for other things, but lost it after first use. Looked high and low for this the first time, and again now. I gave 4 stars for this reason (has been too long to remember) :) Just a tip: If you put brownies in freezer for ten minutes while warm and then cut, they are great. When brownies are warm, even a plastic knife isn't perfect. I think even if you put the knife in freezer for ten minutes, it would work out the same, although (since I lost mine, or more likely one of my boys lost it) I did not get a chance to try it this way yet...but I will. When I did use it, it was to cut five pans of brownies! I never would have made this many without this knife, as I HATE cutting them because they stick ALL the time!!!Hope this helps.

Waring KS80 Knife Sharpener, Black and Brushed Stainless

After my wife complained that our kitchen knives were getting too dull to use, I set out to find a good knife sharpener for household use. I researched a bit and found several options both manual and electric. One name that kept popping up was "Chef's Choice" and I noticed very few negative comments on their models. Having both a discount coupon and gift certificate from Bed, Bath & Beyond I decide to make my decision there. Unfortunately, there wasn't any sales staff knowledgeable about knife sharpeners and I had to go it alone. It was there that I first noticed the Waring KS80 Professional Sharpener. With it's black and stainless finish it was definitely more attractive than the plain white Chef's Choice but, it was somewhat more expensive retailing at $100. I settled for the Chef's Choice 110, took it home and was promptly disappointed. On the expensive chef's knife I first tried it on, it left a decidedly sharp but ragged edge on the blade. It looked as though I had tried to sharpen the knife on the sidewalk! I didn't dare try sharpening any other knives and risk leaving such an ugly edge on them. Bed, Bath & Beyond gladly made an exchange for the Waring and I was much more pleased with it's final results a sharp blade with a more visually-pleasing edge. It even cleaned up the rough edge left by the Chef's Choice. The only disadvantage I have found is that, with most knives, the inch or so of blade nearest the handle cannot be sharpened since the hilt of the knife keeps it from being placed into the sharpener's slots. This, however, is not a major drawback since this area of the blade is not frequently encountered in most uses. The Chef's Choice will cover the entire blade length but with a very rough finish. I recommend the Waring over the Chef's Choice without reservation but the Waring is probably a bit too expensive for an appliance that will likely see only a very few uses a year.

This product works much better than I expected. It gives a very clean and fine edge to all of the knives I have used with it. I will never use another brand. Buy it you won't be sorry.

I have a manual sharpener, but in reality almost never use it. The electric sharpener makes keeping my knives sharp a no-brainer. There's a coarse grinder for knives that are dull. For most knives the fineand polishing-grinder works just great. If you have inexpensive knives, the coarse grinder will chew them up, but if you have well-made knives the Waring will work well. I've had good success with the Waring.

I received my knife sharpener very quickly and when I opened the box, I was very impressed; this was no rinky-dinky machine. I read over the instructions which were very simple, then using just a few at a time, over the course of 3 or 4 days, I got all my knives sharpened to a beautiful edge even some that looked hopeless. For years I've tried to learn how to sharpen knives the "old-fashioned" way. Pooh. A couple of minutes and my knife is sharpened to look better than it did when it was new. When they were all sharpened, then the machine went into the cabinet til needed again, whenever that might be. It does heat up and has to rest occasionally, but the instructions warned me of this. I love this product!

Sharpens medium to long knives. Short knives only part of the blade. The first two stations are very powerful and will remove a lot of metal and should only be used if the knife has nicks and no edge at all. The honing stage is best for most of my knives. I suggest using an old knife which you don;t care about first. to test all three operations.

Quikcut Paring Knife

I'm sure cutlery connoisseurs may raise an eyebrow at this knife, but for peeling potatoes and small jobs, it's just the best.

I've tried others' knives on many occasions, and often wished I'd brought my own because I can whip right through a pile of potatoes. I was raised using a peeler gadget for potatoes and never thought I'd want to switch, but I prefer the Pampered Chef paring knife.

Don't use it for big jobs--it's much too flimsy for that. While it's great for peeling potatoes, I don't usually slice or dice potatoes with it.

While this knife may be dishwasher safe, I always hand-wash mine and they have lasted a long time. I've purchased several of these over the years (every time I get invited to one of those parties, it seems, they're only a buck and change) and have given several away and have two in my drawer. I am browsing the catalog from a party this weekend and see they have a special deal in garnet to match my kitchen. Guess what I'm ordering? I just love these little knives!

September 2011 update:

While I still believe this is a good little paring knife for the price, I've found something I like better: Kuhn Rikon Piranha Swivel Peeler, Red.

I have used this knife for years and it is a small all purpose knife. It is sharp sharp sharp!!! My Aunt bought the first ones for everyone in the family and we have been using them ever since. They will retain the edge for quite a long time and for the price you can replace them as often as you would like so buy more than one.

Alaska ULU Knife Cultured Moose Antler Handle w/DVD

This Ulu is much more of a display piece than a cutting tool. It looks nice but as a usable knife there are two serious design flaws, 1) the steel used to make the blade is so soft that it cannot be sharpened at any angle without leaving a huge wire edge (the sharp edge curls over leaving a lip on the blade instead of a sharp edge), 2) the blade is only single ground (beveled ground on only one side, flat on the other) which means when you cut anything firm or thick the cut will veer to one side instead of cutting straight through. The single bevel is done to save cost and makes proper sharpening impossible. It is so poorly made (soft steel and cheap single bevel) as to be useless as a cutting tool. I am only giving it two stars as a display piece, but as a tool it would receive only one star (lowest rating).

WMF Profi Plus 7-1/2 Inch Tomato/Vegetable Peeler

This is excellent for peeling potatoes and other vegetable with an uneven surface. WMF also offers another profi plus peeler (which I have). The other peeler has a fixed blade which does a better job on carrots.

I love everything WMF, but this one was a disappointment. I have had a peeler from WMF for over 2 decades, and thought to simply buy a new one. It is a waste of time, and money. It is very hard to use, and semi works to peel Tomatoes, but if the tomato is not firm forget it. I will keep my old one for 2 more decades.

This is the best peeler I have ever used for peeling yams and potatoes. I struggled to peel tough Garnet Yams using a paring knife or other peelers I tried. It took a lot of force which increased the risk of slipping and cutting myself. With a sharp serrated blade this peeler just glides through yams and removes a thin shaving. All you need is a light touch and very little effort. Since it's all stainless it's easy to keep clean and rust free. Expensive as peelers go, but well worth the price.

Professional Flexible Fruit & Vegetable Carving Knife

Its a very delicate knife but works like magic..!!! perfect for making delicate rose petals. Must take a good care of the blade as it can bend easily.

Seller shipped the item fast, which is the only good thing about them. Knife looked great in the picture but did not perform well. The handle is very low quality and the pattern around it started peeling after the first use it. I used this knife to carve a red bell pepper and after that, the blade turned dull, black and spotted (see picture in the product page). I called the seller and explained what had happened. I had a very rude customer service rep who said that I was lying and the only way for that to happen to the blade was that I burnt it with a lighter. Are you serious?! I asked for the lady's name and she refused to give it to me, when I asked her why could she not tell me her name she said "you do not need to know my name, when you call us next time you won't be talking to me anyway since we have a lot different of reps".

Seller would not give a refund nor send a replacement. Why would anyone burn their knives? It just makes no sense. I have bought way cheaper knives that lasted longer than this one. I Hope that in the future the seller upgrades the quality of these knives and their customer service. It's not even about money at this point, it's about customer service and standing behind what you sell/advertise. If the seller had stated in the description "crap knife made with low quality materials" then I wouldn't be complaining. Stay away from these knives and seller and save yourself some money and time. You are better off buying an exacto knife for 5 bucks at your local arts and craft store.

Mr. Bar-B-Q 18-Piece Stainless-Steel Grill Tool Set

In theory this is a nice set, and I like all of the different tools -but I bought this as a gift, and I'm going to return it. It just looks too cheap. The wooden handles are chipped in some places, there's almost no finish on them, and the plastic case is really flimsy and cheap looking. Perhaps if I was buying them for myself I wouldn't mind, but I'd be embarrassed to give this as a gift.

The plus about this set is the sheer number of things you get. I especially liked the idea of getting a set of knives with this....

The minus is just about everything else. The case is cheap shoddy plastic. The large tools are all TOO LARGE and bulky, I found them to be rather unwieldy. The worst thing about them, believe it or not, is that the rubber grips STINK to high heaven. They must off-gas like crazy or something because I found it to be seriously offensive (it's a very chemical sort of odor, I ended up cutting the rubber off from the most-used tools and throwing it out). The basting brush is COMPLETELY USELESS the bristles are made from a plastic-based material, so guess what happens when you try to baste a hot piece of meat? They melt, if you're lucky they just melt together and not right into your piece of chicken...This probably matches the smelly, off-gasing rubber gribs in terms of stupidity...Anyway, I would recomend getting some other tools, they are probably more expensive for a reason..

Victorinox Swiss Classic Chef's Knife with Granton Edge

I have worked in several professional kitchens, but only cook at home now, and I just love this knife for cutting vegetables. I can slice thin as I like and the item I'm cutting doesn't stick to the knife as much, because of the Granton Edge. Nice light weight too. I have several other Swiss Army products and they all are near perfect. No complaints at all. Great metallurgy. When they say stainless steel they mean it. One Swiss Army tool I've had since 1999 has been around the world with me and has never rusted, because of the good quality stainless steel.

Kuhn Rikon 5-Inch Nonstick Colori Santoku Knife, Red
