Proctor Silex Traditions 74388 Electric Knife, White

Proctor Silex Traditions 74388 Electric Knife, WhiteThis knife was purchased to replace an eons old Sunbeam Electric Knife. This Proctor Silex is heavy and too large in diameter not for arthritic hands and the first use to slice an Artisan Loaf of bread was such a trial that I gave it up and used my regular bread knife. This was not purchased from Amazon but rather from a local retailer and now I'm shopping Amazon to find a good electric knife which is what I should have done in the first place. Hope the Amazon reviewers of electric knives are telling their true opinions of the electric knives recently purchased.

This is a good knife. It doesn't seem to be quite as sharp as the old knife but has a good feel and is easy to use. The cord is permanently attached which eliminates the problem with our old knife of the cord disconnecting in the middle of a cut.

I bought this knife for Thanksgiving to replace my old one and it worked great!

It sliced my turkey just fine...

I thought it would just get put away and that would be it.

But I've been using it at least once a week for roasts/london broils etc.

I've used a Black & Decker slimline knife for 15 years. It still works better than the new Traditions electric knife by Proctor Silex. The new Trimline is heavier, and so large that I can't get my fingers all around it.

Also, it cuts with a ragged look. My turkey breast had ridges. I'll keep my old Slimline.

OXO Good Grips Bent Icing Knife

OXO Good Grips Bent Icing KnifeIf you are either a beginner or an expert cake baker, this bent icing knife is one of the best on the market. Thanks to OXO, whose product line, has the best grip handles, the balance of this knife is great. It is the only one you will need.

I bought this because I, too, wanted a longer icing knife. I works well, with the exception that it is flexible. So, the frosting cannot be cold or stiff, which sometimes makes the cake more difficult to ice. It does work fantastically with softer frostings and whipped cream.

This tool may have some other uses that I don't know of, but it is just too flimsy for icing cakes with anything other than whipped cream. I think it's also much too short and narrow for the job, but that's probably a personal preference.

This utensil will slide under cookies stuck on a baking pan without cracking or crumbling them. It will allow you to remove a small square of brownie or cake from a pan without breaking up the pieces alongside it. It transfers several appetizers or treats at a time. And if you do use it to ice a cake, the offset handle provides excellent control and keeps your fingers out of the frosting. It smoothes any topping to absolute perfection -you will look like a pro.

After mangling a number of cakes with a butter knife, I gave in and bought this for icing my cakes. It's perfect for the job. I'm not a cake artist by any stretch of the imagination; I'm happy if the icing is on the cake and the cake is still in one piece. This knife made the job SO much easier. You just load it up with icing and start spreading. It's simple and easy and the right tool for the job.

Pure Komachi 2 Series Slicing Knife

Pure Komachi 2 Series Slicing KnifeI use this 9" slicing knife to carve cooked meats. It has made quick, tidy work of every roast I've thrown in its path... including turkey/chicken (I am notoriously bad at carving those).

Kitchen knives are one of those things: you can basically spend as much as you want on them. However, sometimes spending more money doesn't guarantee you a better product. As always, do your research! I had been needing new kitchen knives for some time, and after researching the various brands out there, I determined that the Pure Komachi series were the best value for me. They are easy to purchase a la carte, which was a big selling point for me. I've had knife sets before, and I find that there are quite a few knives in the set I never use. Buying just the knives you will actually use is a good way to save a little money. I also really like that they are colorful. In addition to giving my kitchen a pretty splash of color (I have a magnetic knife bar, so the knives hang on the wall instead of being jammed in a drawer or knife block, which can dull the blades), the color also serves a useful purpose, by helping you avoid cross-contamination (for example, I always use the pink chef's knife for raw meat).

All in all, a great buy. I have already recommended these knives to some friends and family, and will continue to do so!

I love all Komachi knives. They cut extremely well, and the resin makes them rust-resistant. They are easy to grip, and the colors make it easy to identify their use. They clean easily and are great to use. I buy them as presents for friends and family every year for Christmas. The slicing knife works great with meat, cheese and vegetables. I have never had problems with it, and the length makes it great to work with.

Had I known I would like the carving knife so much -in both appearance and ability -I probably would have just gone ahead and purchased the entire set at a lower price! I DO just stick to handwashing, out of fear, so I'm not sure how a dishwasher might render it. A great piece of equipment, serves well as a gift or for yourself. I will definitely buy other Komachi knives in the future.

This is the sharpest new knife I've ever bought. I did not want to pay $30 or more for a long blade carving knife that I might use a dozen times a year. This knife does a great job on hams, turkeys, and large roast, at a very minimal cost. Great gift for family and friends for undre $10.

Great great knife. Perfect for cutting large lettuce heads, even works a treat for cutting right through watermelons. Strong and funky looking. I have a couple of these pure Komachi knives and I'm very pleased with how well they work, especially for such reasonable prices. Love'em!

Cuisinart Ceramic 5-Inch Santoku with Plastic Handle and Break Resistant Blade

Cuisinart Ceramic 5-Inch Santoku with Plastic Handle and Break Resistant BladeI prefer doing 8" chef knife duties with a shorter utility knife when I'm cooking for one or two in my closet size kitchen which leaves less room to maneuver a larger knife. Ceramic means I probably won't have to sharpen it, or even worry that leaving it around dirty or wet will ruin the blade. This fat rubbery oval handle is more comfortable than any triple tang rectangular handle, and while much lighter than a steel knife, the weight is evenly distributed. I know the tomato thin slice test is standard, but for me the real test was being able slice clean through my nori seaweed jacketed sushi without disturbing it's content and this knife did the trick where all my other straight edge or serrated knives had failed (always re-wet your knife between slices into a sushi roll since the starch inhabits each new cut). A local bed and bath chain may have this cheaper than what you'll find online. Cuisinart was smart to include the plastic blade jacket for added storage safety from cuts, portability, and help prevent the blade from getting shattered between uses. If you are still skeptical, see all the glowing reviews here on what appears to be a very similar utility size knife; Kyocera Revolution Series 4-1/4-Inch Utility Knife, White Blade yet the deeper Cuisinart blade is safer for fine slicing work as it helps keep the blade safely angled against your knuckles thus away from your fingertips so if you want a shallower blade, perhaps you should play it safe and consider a shorter paring knife instead.

These knives are junk. Chipped cutting up vegetables the second day. Thought it was a defective one, purchased another and it chipped cutting fruit the same day. Will never purchase another ceramic knife too fragile and not perfected yet.

I really don't understand the complaints about this knife. My wife got me one for Fathers Day last year. It was incredibly sharp and cut much more smoothly than my much more expensive steel knives. Although the knife did eventually get dull enough that I could run my finger on the edge, it still cut through meats and vegetables with ease. It lasted 1 1/2 years before my son broken it trying to crush garlic (he learned the hard way that ceramic does not bend). Maybe these others did not understand the limitations of ceramic.

We just bought two more, one for our house and one for my son to take to college.

I loved this nice when I first bought it from Bed Bath etc. It works great to chop veggies and even tomotatoes until one fatal day when it chipped. I was crushed as it worked better than most of my metal knives. I was just about to purchase a bigger one. Now..I don't think it will be worth the investment. I would rather pay top dollar for something that lasts than something that works great for a "minute". Wish it came with a warranty or made to not chip.

Victorinox Swiss Classic 5-Inch Chef's Knife, Try Me Item

Victorinox Swiss Classic 5-Inch Chef's Knife, Try Me ItemI bought this for my husband, as he is the gourmet chef in the family. However, I use it for everything in the kitchen. Right size, easy to handle, and sharp.

I absolutely love this little knife. Small enough to pare, big enough to do some of a chef knife's jobs, and very comfortable in my hand. It stays closest to my work area as the "grab-it" knife. Razor-sharp right out of the box.

I have several other knife brands in my drawer, Henckels and Wusthof among them, I have found the Victorinox knives to be superior in many ways holding an edge being the primary advantage. And if they ever fail you (hasn't happened to me yet), they're cheap enough to throw away and just buy a replacement. You'll go through many of these before you spend as much as you would for many other brands.

Although I grant that they don't look as good in the knife block with these black fibrox handles, I owe my culinary instructors at MPCC and Consumer Reports a big "thank you" for turning me onto Victorinox.

I bought this particular knife because my 8 YO daughter likes to help out in the kitchen, but my 8" and larger knives were too big for her, and the smaller knives can't do the job. This knife fits her perfectly and lets actually her help when she's "helping", but I also find that I use it a lot for medium sized jobs.

I highly recommend Victorinox in general, and this knife in particular if you need something between a paring knife and an 8" chef's knife.

Higo no Kami Dai(sizeM), Nagaokoma, Import from JAPAN

Higo no Kami Dai(sizeM), Nagaokoma, Import from JAPANA higo no kami is a kind of archetypal folding knife. In Europe and the U.S. this type of non-locking knife is called 'friction folder'. Friction folders are traditional but very basic knife designs that can be traced back to the Romans. That these designs are still in use today should be taken as prove that despite their simplicity they have worked well for thousands of years and continue to do so.

Having no locking mechanism, a Japanese friction folder like the higo no kami Dai is opened by pushing with your thumb on the protruding tang of the blade. Keeping your thumb on the tang after having opened the knife will prevent the blade from closing. To my mind this is a more secure design than using a spring as in other non-locking knives, e.g. a Swiss Army knife(SAK), because you are in direct control of the force needed for locking. If you apply a secure grip, the knife will not close. The higo no kami Dai I call my own has been up to any cutting task until now and can even handle light stabbing (I once had to open a can with it although stabbing is clearly not what the knife was designed for).

The higo no kami Dai is made out Hitachi-BlueSteel, a very hard non-stainless carbon steel which takes a razor sharp edge due to its grain structure (fine grains). Blue steel or Aogami holds a sharp edge for a very long time and can be easily resharpened if necessary. That is why Aogami also is the steel of choice for hand-forged Japanese kitchen knives. As with all knives, it is not essential that the knife comes shaving sharp out of the box. It is much more important that the blade can be resharpened to a fine edge easily as all knives will become dull when being used. Having said that, I would like to add that I was pleased when my higo no kami Dai did come shaving sharp out of the box.

The blade of the higo no kami Dai has been hand-forged in SanMai technique, meaning that two outer layers of soft but shock-resistant steel are forged onto a core of hard but more brittle steel in order to protect the core. The marks on the top of the blade are hammer marks which in my view add to its character.

Being made out of non stainless carbon steel, the blade is prone to rust if not cleaned after use. To prevent it from rusting one should apply a light coat of oil every three to six weeks. Olive oil or peanut oil will do, Japanese camellia oil is even better. A small bottle of that will last for years. Apply a thin coat of oil and then wipe down the blade with a clean piece of cloth.

As with all higo no kamis, one of the main drawbacks of the design is the rather slim steel handle which might feel uncomfortably when trying to apply a secure grip. Also the fit and finish of the handle is rough (as it is often the case with Japanese kitchen knives). Obviously the blade smith focussed on the blade and its cutting ability and only put little work into the handle. Of course this is what makes the higo no kami Dai still affordable. It is a hand-made tool made by a professional but reduced to the max.

In order to improve the grip I have bought a traditional Japanese leather sheath for my higo no kami Dai, which looks like a traditional sheath for folders but is open on the back an spots a lanyard hole. You put the higo no kami Dai in this sheath, then put a leather strap through the lanyard holes both of the sheath and the knife (thereby also securing the knife to the sheath). To open the knife, pull it up and out by the protruding tang, open it and then push it back into the leather sheath with now serves as a kind of leather scales to the handle. The grip is greatly improved by this and I am told that many Japanese carry their higo no kamis this way.

All in all, the higo no kami Dai is a nice traditional knife and clearly worth a buy for those who feel comfortable with the concept of friction folders. It is not a substitute for a beefy locking folder (think Spyderco or Benchmade) but it is a great addition. I use my knife mainly in the office because it raises little concern with the co-workers and it is legal in the place I live. Given the choice between a higo no kami and a SAK [assumed that this would be a single blade, non-locking one which yet again most SAKs are not ;-)] I would always choose a higo no kami.

I ordered this little number after I fell In love with the look of Higonokami knives. It's such a simple beautiful knife. It's a blade, a rivet and a brass handle. I saw another persons review talking down on the knife, obviously they will never be happy with anything. The beauty of this knife is it was designed to be used, not to just be a pretty knife. That aside, it's rough looks make it stunning, truly a piece of art. The perfect blend of form and function.

Anyways... I like mine, but what do I know? I'm not a knife collector, I just like nice looking useful things.

I am still feeling excitement every time I look at Higonokami. I sharpened this knife to razor sharp edge that cuts so clean you don't even feel it (yes, I accidentally cut my finger the other day, so I know what I'm talking about).

I love this product. The knife came very sharp, and seems nice and sturdy. I am actually writing this 6 months later, and it has lasted just fine. The blade is great, and getting it for this price, they did cut down on handle quality, but it isn't a bother to me. I think the brass is just fine. Actually, I took a fine sharpie to their engravings so it stands out better, and on the other side I was able to engrave names (in Hiragana) and throw in some kanji. I would buy from them again, it shipped and arrived quickly.

Cuisinart BDH-2 Blade and Disc Holder

Cuisinart BDH-2 Blade and Disc HolderThis is a handy addition to the food processor. If you have one of these, I am sure you might have discovered as I did just how sharp the blades are. I nicked myself more than once trying to grab my blade out of the bowl where I kept all of the attachements for this. This stores all of the basic disks and dough attachment as well as the chopping blade. There is room for one more disk in addition to what comes with the set. This making keeping your blades and disks in a handy place. My only complaint is the latch that keeps it shut, is a little aggrivating. You must twist the latch by pulling it out, and not just to the side. I couldn't think of a better way to keep everything together!

This product works well in storing your blades and other parts, but good luck getting them out of there! Once the top closes, it locks shut, preventing your items from jumping out? In order to unlock the lid you have to pull this teeny tiny knob and then turn it WHILE you are pulling. The problem here is that there is no grip on this knob, and if you are in the kitchen, half the time your hands are soaking wet or greasy, so with no grip on this knob, you can run into some trouble. To alleviate this problem, I've replaced the knob with one similar to that of pin ball shooter, it has a convex shape with a knob at one end, giving you better leverage when opening the lid.

There is just one last thing I will say about this too, BE CAREFUL WHEN PICKING IT UP. Don't put your hand through the bottom like I did and slice open your finger!!! There is no base to the base of this product, meaning when you pick it up from the bottom, all the blades are protruding from beneath it!

I'm giving this thing 2 stars, one for doing it's job of storing things, and one for the price. The other three missing stars are for the horrible design flaws in this item.

This is listed as an accessory for the DLC-5 7-cup food processor on special. However, it works with all Cuisinarts *except* the DLC-XP, DLC-X, DLC-5 and LPP. This would have been nice to know in advance!

I am disappointed in several aspects of this item. The first is that the cutting accessories for the DLC-5 Cuisinart do not fit in the box, despite being shown as an accessory for this processor on Amazon. Additionally, it is quite large and bulky, requiring more space than the food processor itself!

Most importantly, I specifically purchased this item after reading reviews about how sharp the Cuisinart cutting blades are and how great the Blade and Disc Holder is for keeping the blades away from children. This is *not* a child-proofing device. The entire bottom of the "box" is open. While the cutting edges are protected when the holder is locked and sitting on a counter or table top, you can easily cut your fingers by picking up the holder and sticking your hand inside through free access on the bottom side.

I like being organized as well as the next person, but based on the other reviews warning that this holder does not fit the blades for all Cuisinart models, you might consider doing what I have done for the last 20 years. I bought a small, rectangular plastic basket for about a dollar, and simply store my discs and blades in that. The discs sit vertically in the basket, and it's easy to pluck out the one I need. Simple and inexpensive solution!

OXO Good Grips Garden Knife with Sheath

OXO Good Grips Garden Knife with SheathI've been metal detecting for 25 years and have tried a number of different types of "digging tools". Garden knives offer the best size blade for quickly popping a coin out of the ground while not causing too much disruption to the surrounding grass. After breaking two of the Fiskar garden knives in half, I purchased one of these. The handle is comfortable for driving the blade into hard soil, and the full-tang construction results in no flexing when prying on something with great force. This knife is proving itself to be indestructable.

Nice Hori, excellent handle! Much better handle than the wooden ones. Very strong and sharp. Once you use a hori hori, you will not give it up. (Only downside is that it is made in China, but the stainless steel seems to be of good quality, and it carries a lifetime guarantee.) Nice!

This is a great garden knife! I use it for weeding, planting, digging out tough roots, edging, etc. Unlike so many garden hand tools this one is made to not bend or break no matter how much stress you put on it. I like it so much I have two of them in different areas of my garden. I don't care where it was made. Unlike some other folks who wrote reviews I sure don't think of this knife as a weapon even though my dandelions might not agree with me. Buy one. You will love it. Incidentally, I bought a Fiskar's garden knife first. It rusts a bit, although still useful. It is cheaper, but the Oxo is so much better.

It is well suited for self defense also in that reminds me of a Japanese Tanto design.

The knife itself is fantastic great for pulling weeds, dividing perennials, planting annuals, bulbs, veggies, etc. It's a very thick piece of stainless steel and a nice grip. I don't expect any problems with it. Just don't lose the thing. It does have the hole in the handle so you can hang it up if you'd like. The sheath isn't all that great, it tends to swivel a bit when clipped to your belt or pants pocket. I'd definitely recommend this tool, a must for any gardener.

Amway A101, E84, E-85, E-9225 Compatible Fit Replacement Water Filter

Amway A101, E84, E-85, E-9225 Compatible Fit Replacement Water FilterWell....Amazon needs to provide more information because even though it is marketed as Amway compatible it is not the same as Amway's.

First the filtering surface area of the filter is about ½ of the real Amway filter. Also, the filter is good for 6 months where the Amway filter is good for a year. Last, there is no documentation or any paper indentifying who makes the filter, how does it compare to Amway's, and who assumes product liability. I was given the name of the company that makes it but there is nothing in the filter that identifies the manufacturer. For all you can tell, it could have been made in someone's garage in China.

In all, you pay ½ the price but you get what you pay for: ½ the time, ½ the filter surface area and no company willing to assume product liability.

Won't buy it again.

This product is O.K. as a replacement but a bit smaller than an actual Amway brand filter.

I will probably spend the little more and buy an actual Amway softener next time.

The water tastes great though. I'm just not sure it takes out all the impurities Amway claims theirs does.

Not terribly dissapointed though. As I said...it's O.K.

Should have read the other reviews. I guess it is filtering, but I plan to replace it in about 6 months. Besides being smaller, there was no carbon looking water that usually comes out in the first couple of minutes. No carbon means not the same filtering to me. The water doesn't have the nasty taste that is present without a filter. That's why I guess it's filtering. I sure don't have any confidence in this one. I won't buy another one.

Common sense will tell you

The beep you get is to "remind" you to replace the filter not a true test of the filter efficiency.

It is the Max Time length specified before changing, not gallons filtered.

Replace the battery and you'll get another year of service, may or may not be efficient.

1250 or 1000 gallons is the test and an estimate usage in a year.

No Filtration Specs to compare gives me Warning.

May give you good tasting water but the reason I bought this filter is to FILTER OUT THE BAD STUFF!

doe's it do that ?

I guess my only option is to order one to read the specs & compare the ANSI/NSF Standards.

Works like an oyster knife is supposed to work. Handle has a good grip and the blade is stout. Seems sturdy, like it should last a lifetime. The thickness of the tip makes it a bit difficult on some shells to get started.

I'll admit, I'm not sure how to go about picking the right oyster knife but this one wasn't for me. i wish the end was a bit pointier.

While a bit pricey, this knife has a handle that makes it safe to use and a blade strong enough to go through a lot of oysters. In addition, the blade is long enough to open the oyster and to go into the shell and sever the adductor muscle so as to remove the oyster. It must have been an appealing product, as a number of them disappeared from our recent oyster roast. I would recommend this to serious oyster aficionados.

Nu-Wave Oven

Nu-Wave OvenI thought I was purchasing the model with the digital timer, but this one only had what looked like an "egg timer" device. There is no way to put it on pause. If I had known this, I wouldn't have purchased it, but I was unable to differentiate between the various different models for this product since they all simply say, "Nu-Wave Oven." But beware that they are certainly not all the same product. It is very disappointing that this is never made clear by the seller and was difficult to determine by the illustrating photo which made every vendor seem to be selling the exact same product. I would have gladly paid a bit more to get the latest version of this product and even thought about returning it, but it was too much of a hassle. I hope this helps someone so they won't find themselves in the same situation as we are. Buyer Beware!

Got my oven a few days ago. Comes with a cookbook with some really good recipes. Looking forward to trying them. Have cooked chicken, pork chops and hamburgers in it so far and all have been very good. Am still learning to adjust my timing on cooking lengths. It comes with a guide, but this is just an approximation. Don't take it to heart, you will have to babysit the thing the first few times you use it to get the hang of it. I would definitly recomend this for a people who don't want to mess up the kitchen just to cook for one or two. BEWARE! If you cook anything that is moist, it does produce steam and will BURN the bejeebers out of you when you take the lid off. Wear gloves.

After I had the first oven about 2 years, the dome cracked, so I bought a replacement Nu-Wave Oven, and recently the dome has cracked on my second Nu-Wave Oven, after about 2 years.

It's a real struggle trying to find a replacement dome, and reading the reviews, I have no doubt that it would be better to invest in a halogen oven which cleans itself.

We have been using the NuWave on and off for about a year. The only things that I love to cook in this oven is hamburgers and chicken. The Chciken I generally brown in fry pan first otherwise the finished chicken in the NuWave look horrid because it doesn't brown the meat. The hamburgers are good looking and juicy as can be. I have tried other meats and have been disappointed. Currently our household is dieting and watching fat in take so this Nu Wave is perfect for us.

This appliance does work, BUT not as they want you to believe. First and worst it does NOT ever reach 350 degrees. I turned mine on for 5 minutes with NOTHING in it. 325 is the top temperature. Yes, I used a good oven thermometer. So it is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. NOT easy to clean either. The lower pan coating chips almost immediately.

label me disappointed!!!!!

Stelton Pure Black Chef's Knife, small

Stelton Pure Black Chef's Knife, smallI am so happy with this knife, not only is it sexy as can be (yes, I am a nutcase, I know...) but it's very very sharp. It's comfortable to use, sharp, looks excellent. I use this and it's brother (I have the big and small one) almost daily!

We bought these knives to match a hammered set we bought that did not have steak knives. They are really nice knives and cut well. We are very happy with them. We bought two sets and probably should have bought two more.

Wusthof Classic 3-Inch Hollow Ground Paring Knife

Wusthof Classic 3-Inch Hollow Ground Paring KnifeThis is a great paring knife, peels garlic beautifully. Fits my hand well with nice balance and a comfortable handle. The blade cuts through everything as if it were butter.

I now use this little guy as my paring knife most of the time, it's very handy since I do more small chopping than peeling. Get the big one too, it's great also.

Bought this for my wife as a present. She loves it. It's perfect for the times you don't really need the larger knives.

This is a great knife sharp and well-balanced. I used to use either one of my chef's knife (Mac & Wusthoff) or the Wusthoff Santoko, but, frankly, they were too large to use comfortably to slice garlic and other small items. I have a ton of professional knives Wusthoff, Henckels, Global, and Mac, and I reluctantly decided to add this one to the collection. It is now one of my favorites. THE favorite for smaller jobs.
