Victorinox 11-Piece Knife Set with Block, Rosewood Handles

Victorinox 11-Piece Knife Set with Block, Rosewood HandlesWe are happy with this purchase. The knives are very light and very sharp. We are replacing a cheap set so this is a treat.

After doing a lot of research into knives, I found that many sites recommend the Victorinox Forschner knives. Taking that recommendation, I suggested that this rosewood set would make a nice Christmas gift. It turns out I was wrong. When opening the box, my first thought was, "someone is selling knock-off knives branded as Victorinox". One of the steak knives was in where the paring knife should go so I swapped them and noticed that because the slot for the small paring knife is so large, the knife tilts down out of line with all the other knives. I can see why maybe someone swapped the knives in the first place because the steak knife slots are too small and you can feel the serrations cutting into the wood just trying to insert them. Then once you do get the steak knives into their slots, they still stick out leaving about 1cm of the blade exposed. The angle of the wood handle is not in line with the angle of the block so on top of these other issues they make this set look like I got it for $20 at a garage sale. The 10" slicer had a gouge on it and the handle of the steel is a different shade from the rest of the knives.

I haven't bothered using them since they look so bad so I can't comment on the quality of the steel. I'm setting up a return ASAP. I've posted a few user images for this product as well to illustrate these issues. Maybe quality control just missed this one but if you're looking at these knives you might want to think twice. Maybe the ones with the Fibrox handles won't have all these problems.

World Centric Corn Starch Forks, 24-Piece

World Centric Corn Starch Forks, 24-PieceMy company started using these a while back and they are as sturdy as a disposable fork as I have ever used. Great product

These are great forks. Compostable, durable, and very nice as disposable forks go. That said, I found them today for $2.99 at Whole Foods. If you're buying multiple boxes, it's probably worth a trip to your grocery store.

This product is super cool. We used at holiday party. The utensils upheld to hot soup, lasagna, meatballs and sauce, etc. Super sturdy and conscious friendly.

I earlier wrote a rash review on this product and that was unfair. The rashness was due to a quick preliminary scan based on the handle, not the base. I still think the handle is delicate compared to the solidly constructed fork base. The center of the handle is cut open. Perhaps it's a design feature but one that seems to render the fork a bit on the light and delicate side (at least for me). But the fork itself is strong. So for that, I will definitely eat my words right out of this fork!

Kyocera Revolution Series 3-1/7-Inch Paring Knife, White Blade

Kyocera Revolution Series 3-1/7-Inch Paring Knife, White BladeThe fact that you are even reading this suggests that you already know the arguments in favor of ceramic knives. Ceramic knives are harder than steel knives, can be made much sharper than steel knives, hold their edge ten times longer than steel knives, are lighter than steel knives, won't brown foods, transfer a metallic taste or smell, or rust.

You probably also know the disadvantages of ceramic knives. Unlike steel knives ceramic knives can chip or break so you want to avoid dropping them, tossing them in a sink or kitchen drawer, or arguably even washing them in a dishwasher. (Most ceramic knives come in fitted plastic packing material that can be saved, or you can store them in something like this Kyocera Bamboo 3-Slot Knife Block.) If you actually succeed in dulling a ceramic knife, it will need to be professionally sharpened, though Kyocera has come out with a sharpener for home use: Kyocera Electric Diamond Knife Sharpener for Kyocera Ceramic Knives. Unlike steel knives ceramic knives cannot flex without breaking so there can be no such thing as a ceramic boning knife, and you only want to use ceramic knives to cut boneless meats. Finally, although using a proper cutting board is a good idea with fine steel knives, it is an absolute requirement with ceramic knives; using a ceramic knife to cut something on a plate is an absolute no-no.

So the only remaining question is whether to go cheap: Harbor Freight Tools Ceramic 3 Inch Paring Knife or expensive: Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle, and due to the fortuitous timing of a couple of good sales I can offer an opinion.

Blade: The Harbor Freight blade is double bevel ground while the Kyocera Revolution blade is chisel ground. Along with Kyocera's claims that its micro-grain ceramic is more dense than its competitors, this should result in a sharper blade, but any difference was too subtle for me to detect. Both knives will be MUCH sharper than any steel knife you are used to, cutting through citrus rinds (and even seeds!) like butter.

Handle: Both the Harbor Freight and Kyocera Revolution have superficially similar ergonomic handles, but I noted a couple of significant differences. In the Harbor Freight the finger guard is part of the handle while in the Kyocera Revolution it is part of the blade. Surprisingly, I found the Kyocera Revolution handle a bit slippery, which in light of the consequences of dropping it is significant. The tackier surface of the Harbor Freight handle provided me with a surer grip.

Color: The Kyocera Revolution paring knife is available in five other handle colors:

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Blue Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Green Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Orange Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Red Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Yellow Handle,

and one other blade color:

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle, Black Blade;

the Harbor Freight paring knife is available in any handle color,...

as long as it is black.

Sharpening: If you manage to dull your Kyocera Revolution knife, Kyocera will sharpen it in return for shipping and handling; if you manage to dull your Harbor Freight knife, you are on your own.

Price: This obviously varies but in most cases you can expect to pay between twice as much and four times as much for the Kyocera Revolution paring knife as for the Harbor Freight paring knife.

Note: An inexpensive Kyocera Ceramic Y Peeler in all of the matching handle colors, is also available.

This has become my favorite paring knife. Starts sharp and stays sharp. I've been using it for months now and it clearly outperforms my Four Star J.A. Henckels paring knife. I'm seriously considering replacing all my knifes with ceramics.

Kalorik Chocolate Melter/Fun Fondue

Kalorik Chocolate Melter/Fun FondueThe main reason I got the Kalorik Chocolate Melter/Fun Fondue was because of the extras. I had visions of making chocolates and all sorts of gourmet treats, along with straight fondue. I was also attracted to the revolving tray. Now the tray is a nice touch. It's sturdy plastic and is attactive and durable. But the pot itself is small and not extraordinary at all. In fact, it's probably less useful than a model costing $25.00. The "molds" are small plastic trays that will tear easily and will probably fall apart after one use. The tools, likewise, are plastic and small. If you get this pot, count on buying a separate set of equipment for stirring and dipping.

The instructions are also unclear. Although the pot looks like a double broiler, it is unclear whether or not water should be used in the lower layer. It is also unclear whether to turn the heat to settings 1 or 2. It also says not to use anything except for chocolate in the pot, but traditional fondue is made with milk, cream, or some other kind of liquid.

The system is messy, though easy to clean. The chocolate leaked all over the inside and outside of the pot, including the bottom layer. The good news is that the pot seems to be made of some chocolate resistant material and cleaning went quickly. A full pot of chocolate took approximately half an hour to melt, a little bit longer than the advertised 18 minutes but faster than many other systems.

In retrospect, I wish I would've gotten a cheaper model and bought my own frills. This is good for an attractive presentation, but there are many less expensive fondue makers that will get the job done just as well.

Stanton Trading 12 by 18 by 1/2-Inch Cutting Board, Red

Stanton Trading 12 by 18 by 1/2-Inch Cutting Board, RedI bought similar cutting boards several years ago and, while they're not the best in the world, they're serviceable. It was time to replace them, so I ordered six more. Unfortunately, the entire set of cutting boards have warped within 2 months of purchase. Now they spin when I cut something on them, which isn't safe.

I won't purchase these again and would strongly recommend that you don't buy them, either.

This is a great cutting board with a good thickness that I am sure will help to maintain the integrity of my knife blades. I ended up getting this one and the green one here: Stanton Trading 12 by 18 by 1/2-Inch Cutting Board, Green. I will use the red one for meats and the green one for veggies. I do a lot of cooking and have gone through many cutting boards in my time working as a professional cook for over 15 years, so I know a good quality board when I see one. I love the simplicity, with no useless handle cutout, raised sides or bumper edges, all which just get in the way of cutting and sliding food off a board. The medium size of the 12 by 18 works well for just about any task you will encounter in the kitchen and fits nicely on most any size counter top. Also this is the perfect size for picking up and transferring food from board to pot. It has just enough grip on its surface to not slide around, even when wet, yet is slick enough to easily slide food off of. This board is absolutely perfect for any home or professional restaurant; I would not change a thing. In fact, I plan on buying many more of these, just to make sure I can stock up on them in case they ever run out or discontinue these models, because it really is hard to find such an all around performer in a cutting board that will truly fit my high standards of kitchen ware.

Buy Stanton Trading 12 by 18 by 1/2-Inch Cutting Board, Red Now

I bought 3 different cutting boards, by different manufacturers and this one spins like a top. It spins because they it is not completely flat. To keep it from spinning I put a folded kitchen towel under the center of the board.

It should sit flat and there is no reason for it not to since it is a molded product, this is a sign of inferior production. I won't buying from this company again.

I absolutely love this cutting board! I've only had it for a couple weeks, but so far it has been great. It is heavy, but I like that because it doesn't move on the counter while I'm chopping on it. It just fits into the dishwasher, which is great. I didn't realize when I bought it that the surface is textured, but that is not a problem at all. On the contrary, it makes food slide off of it easily when I want to transfer the food to my pan etc. It feels very durable and I have high hopes that it will last me a long time!

Yamazaki Alexandra ICE 5 Piece Placesetting

Yamazaki Alexandra ICE 5 Piece PlacesettingI bought this as my first set of flatware and I am very pleased. I have looked at other fine brands and liked this design the best. It is very elegant yet still simple enough to use everyday. It has a good feel and doesn't feel cheap. I recommend this flatware! :-)

We picked this setting when we made our wedding registry 4 years ago. We picked it because:

1) none of the utensils had a "weird" shape

2) we liked the design

3) the butter knife had a thick enough blade to spread butter but still sharp enough to cut a decent steak

4) all the utensils had good balance in the hand

All 4 still true.

The only possible negative is that the knives will show rust spots if we use any lemony detergent in our dishwasher... so we don't use lemon scented detergent & no more spots.

Victorinox Cutlery 9-Inch Round Sharpening Steel, Black Plastic Handle

Victorinox Cutlery 9-Inch Round Sharpening Steel, Black Plastic HandleSince I often see these tools reviewed with references made to "sharpening" a knife, it is worth noting that (name not withstanding) they do not sharpen. (Forgive me if you know all of this). If you took a knife which was actually dull, and spent the day using this tool on it, you would never get it sharp. What this tool does do, and well, is repair the damage that ordinary use does to your already sharpened edge. If you look at a freshly sharpened edge under adequate magnification, (try a BelOMO 10x Triplet Loupe Folding Magnifier ) you will see a (more on less) regular edge. Prepare a meal with that knife, and look at it again, and you will see all sorts of small insults to the edge. These flaws can dramatically reduce the performance of a knife which is still actually quite sharp. This tool performs the task of smoothing out those little insults, and allowing you to get the full benefit of the sharp edge which is already present. The steel performs the same task as the leather strop Fromm Razor Strop 2 1/2" X 23" W/HDL Russia which used to hang on the arm of your barber's chair, and in fact I have a leather barber's strop I have used for the task.

While this is a very affordable and useful steel, I would point out that it is only suitable for short knives. Your steel should always be a bit longer than the knife you are polishing with it, and so, while this steel is fine for a boning or paring knife, it is unsuitable for a slicing knife or a large chef's knife. That said, I find the small size convenient for use with small knives, and keep a larger steel for use with my big knives. If you can only afford one steel, you may wish to consider something bigger that would work for both large and small knives. Unless you have a large slicer or other really big knife, a 12" steel is probably big enough for almost all home use.

This is a tool you should be using at least every other time you use your knife. An actual sharpening should only be needed once or twice a year. Keep in mind that using the wrong cutting surface will ruin any edge never cut on glass, marble, Formica, or any hard surface. A hardwood J.K. Adams TCB-2014 20-Inch by 14-Inch Traditional Carver or bamboo Wüsthof Bamboo Cutting Board cutting board is best.

I bought this along with some Forschner knives. So far, those knives have not needed sharpening. However, I pulled some old knives out of the drawer and this quickly and effortlessly improved the edge. The only drawback is that it does not include written instructions. I had to search around online to figure out exactly how to use it. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

The description of the product and the title is confusing due to conflicting descriptions. It is not a Black Fibrox handle as indicated. Even though the title says plastic, product description says Fibrox and since most of Victorinox's knives comes with a Fibrox handle one would assume the sharpening steel's handle as well. Unfortunately it's cheap light weight plastic, hence the 4 star. I can spend less and get a cheap plastic handle with the same quality steel from other companies.

Classic Nonstick Paring KnifeThis is the best knife I've ever had it beats Gerber, Fiskars, and Chicago Cutlery! It slicks right through everything I've used it on so far. It's large enough to cut bigger fruits and veggies but still small enough to easily peel potatoes. Love it!!!

Wusthof Silverpoint II 4-Piece Steak Knife Set

Wusthof Silverpoint II 4-Piece Steak Knife SetI did a lot of research on the popular, better knife brands before buying. I was torn between the two most well known: Wusthof and Henkels. I saw a lot of reviews regarding Henkels about them not lasting long or living up to expectations. According to Wusthof's website, all their knives have the same blades in them, in all their knife lines. Perhaps I misunderstood their descriptions, but this is the meaning I took away from their own website. That being said, the only difference between their cheaper and most expensive (Classic) lines is the handle. I purchased a set of the Classic line for cutting and chopping. They are definitely superior to these steak knives. However, since I am using the steak knives only for dining and not every day, these are more than adequate.

The blades are very sharp and cut easily through all meats. The only thing I can really say isn't perfect, are the handles. They could be better quality. I personally felt, for the amount of use I get from the knives, the handle quality vs. price is worth it. You can spend $100 on a set of Classic line steak knives that you use twice a week, but I think most people would be highly satisfied with this set.

As others have mentioned, nicer blades like these should be treated a little bit differently. Do not put these into dishwashers. They will bang around and become dull, quickly. The heat will also damage the handles. Hand wash and towel dry immediately after use. The steel will rust quickly, otherwise. These are great knives, and they need exceptional care to last.

I have slowly been filling a knife block with Grand Prix II knives for my girlfriend, and it came time to get steak knives. We wanted a good quality knife, but when my girlfriend saw the price of the Grand Prix II steak knives, she said they were just too pricey. I came across these silverpoint knives and decided for the price, I'd give them a shot. If they're not that great, I didn't have a lot of money invested in them, so I ordered them.

We're not disappointed. They are extremely sharp and cut through steak like butter. The handles match the Grand Prix II handles, so they keep the look in the knife block. The only difference I've noticed so far is that they stain if you don't wash them right away, which hasn't been an issue with the Grand Prix II knives she has. I would recommend these knives for anyone who doesn't want to cough up the dough for the Grand Prix steak knives. Just make sure you wash them immediately after dinner.

I have wusthof knives that are more expensive. They have the more expensive handles. I purchased the Wusthof Silverpoint II knife set and steak knives for my daughter and one for my son. They work great. They both appreciate having a nice steak knife set. The old ones were dull and worthless. Great knives! Stay sharp a long time. Get the steak sharpner and they will be just like new after using this sharpner. Be careful not to cut yourself, using new sharp knives are a hazard after having dull knives. They cut right through food, veggies and you want to be careful to keep your fingers out of the way!

Want Wusthof Silverpoint II 4-Piece Steak Knife Set Discount?

Like other reviewers, I am the happy owner of a set of Grand Prix II knives, and I absolutely love them. However, when the time came to add the steak knives, one look at the price of the GP II version made me nervous simply too expensive for someone who does not eat steak that often. So I ordered a set of these. I have to say I hated them at first. They are lightweight, and one can feel the quality as being different to the Grand Prix II. Ultimately, you get what you paid for. But, despite the weight, the blade is Wusthof quality; it cuts through steak without a problem (as much as I would like to claim that it is my excellent cooking of the steaks). Plus, the weight of the knife is a really minor issue when enjoying a steak, at least for me. So I bought a second set a couple of months later. If I had an infinite budget, I would have gone for the GP II, but as it is, these are good enough.

Victorinox Swiss Classic 6-Inch Chef's Knife

Victorinox Swiss Classic 6-Inch Chef's KnifeI have owned several knife since I have been working in the food industry. When I first started to get into cooking I thought I needed Wusthofs, Henkels, Globals or Shuns. I really like those knifes, so I'm not writing this to rally against those knives, but I also picked up a Victorinox. These knives many not be forged or balanced like the ones I mentioned earlier. They may not have the heft of a Wusthof or hold their edge as well as some of the nicer knives. What these knives have heads and above the other knives I mentioned is a great price point for a fantastic product. Half my knife kit is Victorinox knives. I still use the nicer knives at home, but you can not beat the value of these knives for the daily pounding I put them through. They hold a nice edge, they don't make your hands feel tired when you have a lot of prep work to do and seem to last forever. This is a solid knife for a great price.

Fantastic knife. Have Shun, Henckels, etc. but use this knife more. Don't be fooled by the reasonable price, this is one great knife for real cooks.

Dexter-Russell (1376HBR) - 6" Boning Knife - Dexter-Russell Series

Dexter-Russell - 6' Boning Knife - Dexter-Russell SeriesThis seems to be a nice knife, for what it is. The handle is attractive, and it was fairly sharp out of the box. It is, however, stainless steel, not carbon steel as stated in the title and description. If I wanted a stainless steel knife, I would have bought one of the Victorinox knives with a plastic handle so I could run it through the dishwasher. For me, this is sort of the worst of both worlds -it can't be put in the washer, and it doesn't have the sharpening benefits of carbon steel. That being said, it is very attractive, and it works fine for boning. I would have given 4 stars if I wasn't mislead.

Undercabinet Hide-Away Cookbook Holder

Undercabinet Hide-Away Cookbook HolderGood quality. Sturdy. Not for large or unusually shaped books. Easy to install. Make sure you leave room for any light guard / undercabinet lighting. Ours just fits over the flat mounted underlighting. Although our lights get hot. Plastic shelf is @ 1 inch or less from the light. Heat doesn't SEEM to affect / melt the plastic shelf but we only had it on for @ 1 hour or so. We'll see.

Main issue is the size. Wish it were wider (and for some books, had more height clearance) as we have many gourmet/coffee table style cook books (french laundry. bouchon, alinea etc all excellent btw) that will NOT fit on/in the cookbook holder. Mainly an issue of width; thicker books unless huge are usually ok. If your collection has average sized books, you'll be ok.

Quality is very good but priced too high.

I had two of these at my former house which I brought with me from the house before that. I used one as a cookbook holder and the other as a message center in the kitchen. I'd buy it again if my current cabinets weren't all fitted with undercounter lights. The books remained dry and clean without having to constantly clean a plastic cover. It was easy to keep the pages open because of the angle. Despite opening and closing mine multiple times per day over a period of 10 years, they remained in mint condition. I never even had to tighten a screw.

I solved that by buying a couple cheap battery push LED lights you can get at the box hardware stores, wally world, etc. Just mount underneathe and the cookbook holder still folds up nicely. Very sturdy and the chrome/acyrlic clear finish adds a contemporary look to the kitchen versus the wooden grain one that would not have matched my cabinets. Fits most of my cook books.

KitchenAid Triple Riveted 4-Piece Santoku Knife Set

KitchenAid Triple Riveted 4-Piece Santoku Knife SetThe item pictured was not what I received. I got a 4 piece steak knife set instead. Rather than going through the effort to return I decided to keep the steak knives

Yep, same as the other person that reviewed this item! I ordered the paring knife set and got a steak knife set. Albeit, they are very nice steak knives, but not what I needed! My son jokingly said, "Maybe God's trying to tell us we should eat more steak!" :) I am going to contact Amazon and hope to get this resolved.

Update: I contacted Amazon and they are sending the correct item via 2 day air. Also, they supply a pre-paid label to return the steak knives. Amazon gets A+ for customer service!

Final update: I received my second package today from Amazon. It was supposed to contain the paring knife set that I had originally ordered. I opened it to find another set of steak knives. After contacting Amazon again, they supplied me with another pre-paid return label and also credited my account for the amount of the knives. Needless to say, I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for the paring knife set.

HIC Stainless Steel Pastry Cutter

HIC Stainless Steel Pastry CutterFirst off, although the picture shows a pastry cutter, this is in fact a dough cutter. Also note that you should read the product dimensions to determine if it is the right size for you. It is only 4 inches of scraping length which means basically if you are working with large portions of pastry or dough and using a large board, you will be scraping for a while. Now, I already knew this before purchasing it, so here is why it lost to stars (for me)"

(-1 star) The grip is not very good when scraping pastry as it tends to slide and the cylindrical handle and the slot to wrap your fingers into are not large enough for a good grip.

(-1 star) the edges are VERY sharp which allows cleaning the item to be a semi-dangerous task, as I do not put this in the dish-washing, instead washing it by hand and drying it immediately.

Other than that, I guess I do not have any other valid reasons to make it loose any more stars, but since it is quite uncomfortable to use especially for someone with large hands, I will be giving this away and getting something larger with a wooden/plastic handle with round edges.

Mountain Woods 16-by-16-inch Extra Thick Square Cutting Board

Mountain Woods 16-by-16-inch Extra Thick Square Cutting BoardThis one is for serious cooks. I received it as a gift and have been using it for over 6 months now and it still looks great. I treat the board to a nice olive oil rub every couple of months which has helped keep its beautiful finish! it is actually a great accent for my granite counter top and I don't have to hide it away. Overall, I like it very much.

I got this because I got new knives and wanted a surface that would be conducive to keeping them sharp.

I initially oiled it with mineral oil, and will do so every month. I secondarily wipe it with lemon juice (antibacterial) after I clean off whatever I'm cutting. The size and weight are good for whatever I'm chopping, and it looks good on my laminate countertop. I'm very happy with it!

Let me just start off by saying that this is pretty soft wood so you've gotta be careful with it. I've got a little ding on one of the corners, which represents how soft the wood is since I've been quite careful with it. This is a beautiful cutting board; one that I keep out on the counter since it does look so nice.

I haven't had any contact with the manufacture nor have I needed to, but because of this I can't comment on customer service.

Overall, this thing seems like a steal when comparing other boards of similar sizes and thicknesses!
