Hampton Forge Silversmiths Messina Satin 20-Piece Flatware SetI've owned a good set of Hampton flatware for years that looks just like this style. We were so excited to find more, because we only had one set. Well, I purchased TWO sets of this matching silverware, but QUALITY is NOT the same. Before we even got to use the silverware, we washed it & it came out of the dishwasher rusted. All of it. It should have been stainless steel, but can't possibly be. Our old stuff has washed fine for about 6 yrs & still looks new. These new sets are garbage. And since I had already opened the package, I couldn't just return them in 'unopened, unused' condition. I didn't know who to contact & then apparantly lost my window. There shouldn't be a return window on foul merchandise. I've got $75 garbage still sitting in my office wishing I could box it up & send it back (which would have also been costly as it is heavy). I usually have such good luck with Amazon, but this was the worst experience. Negative stars.

I selected this pattern because I already own the set. My original set was purchased about 10 years ago. The originals are much sturdier, stronger. My simple test is this: If you can use the soup spoon to dig out moderately frozen ice cream, it's decent material. This new set bent like a wet noodle.

I was looking forward to receiving an addition to my flatware set from Hampton Forge Silversmiths. I like the Messina Satin flatware I own and wanted to add to my place settings, so was quite happy to find it online on Amazon. However, the place settings are of an inferior quality. The weight of each piece is lighter and while they look the same, the feel of each piece is different. It's not a big deal. It's possible no one else would notice, but it isn't the same quality, so I am somewhat disappointed.

Although I like the design of the flatware, I was very disappointed with it. I gave them as a gift to my daughter whom I knew loved this particular design. The first time through the dishwasher, rust appeared on most of the pieces. Some came off, some didn't. She now washes them by hand. Would not recommend them.

I have a long bread knife that did pretty well except I hit my knuckles. I wanted a shorter knife and ordered this only to find it was just as long (my fault! The size is stated clearly and is accurate), I decided to try this any way and it does a great job. I am able to cut through the crusty panini with a minimal amount of sawing and once I'm through the crust I can cut straight down without making a mess of the sandwich an no knuckles on the counter. I have used it to cut other things like cutting a whole melon in half (good thing it's long for that). It is easy to clean and feels like it will hold up well. I have a few 'fancy' knives wit this is my third one with the plastic commercial kitchen type handle. The oldest I have is over 15 years old and is still one of my most used knives. They don't look impressive in a knife block on the counter (ESP the white handles) but they get the job done. I suspect a real chef or knife connoisseur could tell you why youneedto spend >$100 on a knife but for the general amateur cooking I do this is a great knife!

if you have a good knife you need one of these to keep its edge. throw out that old steel from you knifeblock. Ceramic is the way to go.

I opened up the box. went right to my kitchen and honed up my henckles and my shun. i have been using myold steel on these daily and i saw an amazing difference. this is the sharpest my henckles chef knife has ever been.

Try a quick test pushing your knife through a ripe tomato without making a slicing motion. If you cant do it you need one of these.

Word of caution: dont drop it. Even though ceramic is harder than steel it can chip or break so baby it a bit. This will also sharpen some as well as reallign the blade. you will see the metal it removes.

Wish it had a better handle thus the four stars but i wouldnt spend any more because this does exactly what i need.

Great product for sharpening (ribbed side) and honing your knives. Note of caution, the ceramic material is very tough indeed, so I found it leaves small scratches on my knives. MY knives which are Shun Elite have polished edge and these scratches are visible. Whether honing or sharpening apply very very light pressure to minimize this effect.

I already have a ceramic steel. I use it extensively but find is sometimes to fine a steel to correct for even minor blade flaws. The Kyocera steel is more aggressive, but still subtle enough not to remove too much metal. I have used it to quickly touch up all of my straight bladed knives. I like it a lot. I gave it four star rating due to the cheap plastic handle... What were they thinking. I purchased their ceramic knives at the same time and alas, plastic handles. Great blades but again what were they thinking.

That's what I'm telling my best friend when I give it to her. She gave me a short list of things she wanted/needed and a small paring knife was on the list. Since I didn't want to come off as an extreme cheapo I looked at several pricier knives but settled on this one because I already own the identical knife and love it for plenty of reasons beyond its reasonable price tag.

The size of this knife is wonderful for most kitchen tasks. I use it for chopping vegetables every day but it also does a formidable job when carving a pumpkin or peeling potatoes or trimming a zucchini. The handle is very comfortable which is a signature feature for the OXO brand. I can use this for a long time without any hand cramping or fatigue. The blade is super sharp and if you follow the manufacturer's suggestion to hand wash it will stay that way. Overall, this knife is nicely balanced and well made. I have been using this knife for quite awhile and I haven't had to sharpen it yet as it still has a solid and sharp cutting edge. I also own the 4" version of this knife, but this is my go to knife for most jobs.

I owned a Kyocera 4" ceramic knife for a few years. I paid over $110 for the Kyocera and it is a white color. I then saw this and bought one set for almost 6 months. This knife set is better looking than the white blade knives. I found this to be just as good or maybe even better made than the very expensive Kyocera. It stay sharp and I never have to sharpen. It is durable enough if you don't use it to cut bone or ply open a can. I dropped it a few times to the floor. They survived the drops. When I peel apple with it, the apple do not rust like using a metal knife. I still keep a few steel knives for cutting bone and chopping. Otherwise, this set is the best and very durable as advertised. Don't buy the Yoshi knife, the white blade chips really easy. Black blade tend to be harder as well as more flexible. However, don't throw it around like a metal knife. It will last years if you take care it.

I've had this knife since early 2012. Dropped it yesterday and the blade broke in half about an inch from the handle when it hit the ceramic tile floor. Broke my heart! I use this knife every day and love it. I will be contacting customer service tomorrow and see if this type of breakage is covered under any guarantee. If not I will order another. So despite it breaking I give it 4 stars, because it is a great knife.

I gave Schmidt Brothers a call and was sent a new knife. A few questions on where it broke and their concern that this should not have happened. With this kind of customer service I would increase my rating to 5 stars.

I absolutely love kitchen knives! I got this knife after seeing a review about it in a magazine. It came super sharp and so far has kept it's sharpness well. I like the wooden handle. I recommend hand washing it though, because as I've run it through the dishwasher the wood on the handle has gotten sort of rough.

Keep in mind wood and bamboo boards must be cared for. Get some mineral oil and wipe your wood boards down periodically to prevent them from drying out and cracking. If you aren't into maintaining quality products you probably don't need a good knife or board so just go to Taco Bell and save yourself some time ;)

I've had this cutting board 2 weeks now, and I'm thoroughly enjoying my first wood cutting board.

I had been happily slicing and dicing away on plastic cutting boards until I did a little research--shock, gasp, hand to the forehead--I discovered that wily harmful bacteria can get trapped in the small nicks on plastic boards.

This board is really beautiful to behold. Plus, it is large enough for me to cut up multiple veggies at once (Eureka! I can avoid overcooking the first veggies I chop since I always underestimate how long it takes me to cut up the next round). The lip around the edge seems like it will likely be handy at some point, but it hasn't mattered to me one way or another thus far. I do keep the board out on the kitchen counter since it is just so beautiful to look at it (and it seems too cumbersome and over-sized to store elsewhere).

I also bought the Howard Products Butcher Block Conditioner to use with the board. Despite my impatient excitement to use the board, I applied the conditioner and let it sit overnight when it first arrived. I also conditioned it after the first few uses.

I have noticed that it wobbles just the slightest bit on the counter, but not enough to be noticeable while actually chopping. I only wash it with hot water and soap in the sink and quickly dry it with paper towels after. It is definitely a labor of love keeping it in shape, but it's so worth it!

Summary: Simple bamboo cutting board. Large. Beautiful. Durable. Treat her right and she'll treat you right. Happy chopping!

I have a big one and what a hassle as it is always on the bottom this is perfect to leave out for my day to day chopping and nice looking. Wolfgang Puck Stainless Steel 10-Piece Cookware SetI received a set of Stainless Steel Wolfgang Puck pans from my parents as a gift two years ago. They figured I would enjoy some high class cookware especially since it came with the extra cooking utensils. I was so excited to have designer cookware, and I have been repeatedly disappointed in so many ways. I'll spell them out clearly so others can make an informed purchase:

1) This cookware starts out looking great, but after a few uses on a gas stove, the pitting and discoloration of the steel is terrible. I read all the instructions and cared for these pans with much effort handwashing, gentle cleaning, etc. They have been so pitted and stained after the first month of average use that I'm embarrassed to use them when other people are in my kitchen because they look downright dirty. I even tried gentle silver polish, overnight soaks, and just good ole' elbow grease without success.

2) Uneven cooking. I have been cooking for over 15 years, and some of that has been in professional kitchens. I routinely find that these pans heat unevenly causing food to burn in certain spots. The burned areas then stick to the pan. Forget trying to make delicate things like an over-easy egg. Almost every time I cook something using a dry cook method, it stick badly. I routinely break egg yolks, have well-buttered grilled sandwiches stick and then fall apart upon turning, and even less delicate things like 'hamburger helper' dishes have burned, but only in spots. Thank goodness I don't have kids in the house that might require 30 seconds away from the stove because cooking in these pans requires constant attention. Now, please assume I've tried adjusting the heat and stirring thoroughly and frequently. The same dishes I've made for years in other pans has ended up burned in these pans. I've even had the stove replaced over the past two years, and nothing has helped this issue.

3) Skin Burns! Stoves are hot so sometimes handles heat up on any cookware, but the handles on the pots, and especially on the lids seem to heat up much more than I'd anticipate. Steel is a conductive metal, so I'd expect some heat, but I've burned my hands more than a couple times by simply lifting a lid without a potholder. Actually grabbing the side handles of a pot could cause serious burns even after only a few minutes on the stove. This is just unsafe and poor design. I've also had friends who have cooked with me in my kitchen comment that these pans/pots 'spit'... what I mean is that if I'm heating water in the small saucepan, as I pour the hot water from the pan into a cup, the water spits and sputters (often onto the hands causing burns) as it contacts the heated edges of the pan when pouring. I've had this happen a little with other cookware occasionally, but it's a large problem with this cookware. Again, the heating qualities of these pans causes the areas not in contact with food to heat up very quickly.

4) Rivets are dangerous. To anyone shopping for pans, please take this point into consideration. When a rivet is exposed to food, such as they are with this pan, you set up a recipe for disaster. Food can become wedged in the small spaces around the rivets which makes cleaning very hard. Additionally, if those areas aren't cleaned properly, lodged food can grow all kinds of nasty food borne illnesses which are directly transferred to food next time you cook. Yes, heat kills bacteria the next time you heat up the pan, but it doesn't always kill the toxins that the bacteria produced while it was alive and well before heating. The toxins are what make you hospital-worthy sick. With these particular pans, they cut some corners with the rivets also, and they look as if they're oxidizing and beginning to break down. Again, disappointed.

5) The larger pots do not stack. Have ample cupboard room because even my small set takes up more space than it needs to. Poor design.

So, I'm stuck with a set of cookware that looks bad and cooks poorly. Who cares about the price or how good of a deal you're getting if you're food is sticking and your hands are burning? My recommendation: save your money and buy something else.

I purchased this set after I had cheaped out on two separate sets I had purchased from Big Lots and Target. Those sets started to fall apart after two weeks and couldn't withstand repetitive, long-term use (I make a lot of stews and slowly cooked items). So I opted to purchase this set with the only expectation for it not to fall apart.

This set has remained resilient for me. Easy to clean, easy to cook in, and considering the frequency of usage, it still looks great. Nothing is peeling, falling apart, and the handles are still sturdy. I also appreciate the variety of cookware, allowing me to cook beyond my stews. I might not know much about gourmet cooking, but personally I found this to be a prudent investment and would recommend it to anyone.

I purchased this set from Ross for $69.00 and it was a steal. This is my first purchase of a stainless steel set. I have used Calphalon and Circulon before and liked them also-but they were nonstick.

The secret to using these pans seems to be to heat them up with nothing in them to not much over a medium heat before cooking in them. Then reduce heat to what is needed. I have a gas stove and these pans DO NOT require high heat to get the same heat as you would with other pans. NOTHING sticks to them so far. They clean up beautifully with no stains, discoloration or pits. Because you don't need high heat from your stove the handles are easy to handle. The lid metal does get too hot to handle without a pot holder-but they do cool off quickly.

If you keep the heat on the pans to med high at best and probably lower, your handles can be held with bare hands. The heat seems to stay in the heavy bottom of the pans.

Before purchasing these I read a lot in chats about using stainless pans and several experienced cooks seemed to say the same thing: heat them without anything in them before you cook in them, then reduce and cook. It works!!!! These are fantastic pans and I am sold on having stainless-especially these pans of such great quality.

I have had Wolfgang's cookware for 10 years now and it is as shiny as the day I bought it. I do not put it in the dishwasher, and to remove stains from the bottom of the inside of the cookware all I use is white vineger. enough to cover the bottom, and warm it. Let it stand for 10 mins and rinse. thats it.

I have never used polish on these pots and pans as its not necessary.

The only complaint I really have it that the rivets on the inside, some are pitted and some are not, but thats because at one time or another I was cooking above the cooking line.

I have been cooking for 21 years, and professionally for 16. I think this cookware is great, you just have to use some common sense in caring for them. With good cookware there are certain things you have to do to take care of them.

I wish I had the same thing to say. I have the 10 piece set also. I think it is cheap due to the studs (that connect the handle to the pot). They look horrible after cooking in them several times. Im not sure why. But they all look that way. I havent seen any other set do that. My old cheap Wearever set didnt do that. I will buy Calphalon the next time. Im burnt on Wolfgang Puck. I do like the untensils alot

I often make lox myself and this knife allows me to do thinner slices with easy. This knife has nice balance and a nice big no-slip grip. The blade looks like a huge 'harmless' butter knife, but it works wonders with meats. It cuts smooth and easy and thin cuts are so much easier than with a chef, santoku or a heavy-bladed slicer. Cuts raw potatoes very well too.

Nothing like any ceramic knife i've seen before, fisher price, i mean you could give it to a kid and he would probably be safe with it, [minus the sharp tip of course, but you could file that off... it's ceramic!)

This is not the first ceramic knife I own but the first one of this Laguiole-style design. I have it for about 3 weeks and it keeps on amazing me once and again: it is pretty light and elegant but sharp and sturdy. Very good for cutting fruit, sharpening an occasional pencil etc. I was outside a few days ago in my front yard when I thought that I need to trim a few pine branches which are blocking the sidewalk. Then I remembered that I have this knife in my pocket. This delicate looking knife cut trough a few 1/3" and ½" branches with the aplomb.

Feels well comfortable and balanced in my hand. Price is right too!

I would recommend this knife to anybody!

I used this knife exactly what it was intended for, and I have to say it did not disappoint. Now that the weather is better (NY), I went outside to relax enjoy the sun and eat an apple. Got to say it made it more enjoyable using this knife. The knife definitely has a design for that...to just slice off a piece, hold it with your thumb on the knife and pop it right in your mouth. I tried it later on meat because I was curious, worked very well, and easy rinse. I might just carry it around with me and use it whenever I eat.

She actually assigned it for me as "the correct choice." But I knew older days, that had been polished directly into my being. I'd lived years in a Victorian house next to her, bosom buddies keeping tarnish from her silver sets and taking jaunts into her attic. Learning about Aubussons, polishing marble and oak, using oils and storing away tips on ways to run her wash through the ringer washer and hang to dry out back by the grape arbors. The real lessons in kitchen and garden. She was the way I learned to can and run a house, drawing back to days a woman was judged by those competencies. Her Studebacher a fine car to drive around the block. She had been a teacher once before being a wife of a dairy owner and community figure.

There were ways to fold and use, store linens, starch collars, brave cockroachescholoform in hand. In short as I always do, I studied the application of her knowledge into her daily living. That is the artist in me.

She loved the pattern "Buttercup" for silver, it was her mother's. I love that Freda loved it so here I am years later with place settings for 12 and a love for this delightful pattern that only a little reminds me of a favorite wildflower find in the fields. Freda got me many piece of this silver the first was a peanut spoon. But I do lack the punch ladle and the cake server shown here and one day I'll get it...and it has been too long since I took out the silverpolish. It's amazing how I was taught to approach this on a weekly and monthly schedule, and still I am not there.

Buttercup is excellent as a silver. It is elaborate with a rather pouting square end. I eat with it happily as it seems to remind me of the past. And dining with it reminds me of my personal past traditions, other times together, those we lose away too fast that were the old before us. Good cut glass crystal does the same.Worth buying this cake server.

Many might find this false of me, a part of a kind of connection to thing, to what money can buy. But it might hit on a spot, yet, you haven't grasped it really. Yes one would sell it in a blink to help a child or plagued with debt. But, it has reminded me of who I was once, how I was seen. And sometimes that has been enough to get through a rough time.

These Victorinox Swiss Classic paring knives are indeed a welcome addition to my kitchen. I love the bright colored handles and the fine quality stainless steel blades.

The handles are long and thinner than my other knives and the finger guard at the base of the handle is not as deep as I would ideally like. The blade is also thin and a tiny bit flexible (like a boning knife). My other Victorinox paring knife has a much sturdier, stiffer feel to it.Victorinox Swiss Army 3-1/4-Inch Fibrox Straight Edge Paring Knife, Black. So, for me, there is a bit of adjustment still going on. That said, these knives are easy to hold and work with. I don't feel that my hand will slip up onto the blade. I really like the idea of have several extra paring knives so that it will be easy to just grab a clean one whenever I want to.

Wusthof Classic 10-Piece Knife Block Set

Wusthof Classic 10-Piece Knife Block SetI recently purchased the Wustof Classic set after much research between the various Wustof, Henkel and Messermeister models. In general, I felt the Wustof's had a much nicer feel and balance to them. I also prefered the blade weight and thickness of the Wustof. I personally prefer the Classic over the Grand Prix, but it is 100% personal preference as the only real difference is the handles.

I compared the Wustof's with the other brands at one of the knife stores in the mall. Comparing them side-by-side was very enlightening and made my mind up that I will only buy the Wustof's from now on. I highly recomend going to one of the mall knife shops and playing with them, most have a wide selection of all of the high quality knives. For this kind of money it is the only wise way to make your decision. I would recomend purchasing from Amazon.com though, the knife stores I went to were about 25% more expensive unless they had a "sale" on a specific item, in which case it was the same price as Amazon.com.

These are one of the best knives you can get, although they are no better than the other models and makes. All knives at this level are top quality, please base your decision on preference and try them out first.

***Update*** It is almost 2011 now and this set is still in my kitchen. Regular use of the steel in the set, along with a couple sharpenings, and this set is still sharp and used daily. Highly recomended. Its been over 5 years of use now and there is no degradation of performance or appearance. Every year that goes by the hefty purchase price of them gets smaller and smaller when looked at versus less expensive sets that would have had to be replaced by now.

My husband and I received this knife set for our wedding to replace a cheap set we've had since college. My husband is more of a cook than I am, so I was skeptical when he decided to add the knives to our registry because I thought the old ones were good enough.

Boy, was I pleasantly surprised when I started chopping vegetables and slicing through meat! The balance of these knives is incredible, and it's such a nice change to let the knives do all of the work of cutting instead of having to hack my way through my food. Cooking has actually become enjoyable to me since prepping food is no longer a chore. We've had the set for seven weeks now, and even with daily use we haven't needed to sharpen any of the knives yet.

Out of all of the knives in the block, The ones that see the most use are the 8 inch cook's knife and the 6 inch sandwich knife, although they all get used. We also decided to purchase other knives to fill the block; a 7 inch santoku knife and a 6 piece steak knife set. If you don't end up buying the 10 piece set (yes it is quite pricey!), the santoku knife is worth buying on it's own! It is slightly lighter than the cook's knife and is wonderful to chop garlic, onions or other smaller vegetables with.

Aside from the price, there really aren't any drawbacks to owning these knives! Being constructed so well, they will definitely last us a lifetime. Even if you only cook occasionally, these knives can help you significantly cut down on your prep time and may even make you want to cook more! My husband and I both love these knives and anyone who tries them out will love them too.

It might seem like a lot to spend for a set of knives, especially with the infomercials that show people sawing bricks in half with their product, then micro cutting a tomato all for $19.95. But this is a lifetime purchase. The knives are balanced and have a great weight and feel in your hands. A quick honing with the steel each use and they stay frighteningly sharp. Like everything else, if you have the right tools, the job is infinitely easier, safer and more pleasurable. I've had my set for over a year and they seem as new as the day they arrived. One note of practicality is that I don't really need all the knives in the set and regularly use only four. If really pressed or confined in a budget you could get along nicely with just two; the 8 inch cooks knife and the 3 1/2 inch paring knife, and of course a steel. Don't be tempted to put them in the dish washer. They clean very easily with a soapy sponge. Intense heat will change the steel in the blade and can be nicked and damaged. Just a final note that Consumer reports rated Wusthof as the best in their tests as well. There are several handle designs, but personally I like the Classic. The Culinar Premiere is beautiful and has all metal handles which are seemingly more durable. But at twice the price are for the very well heeled only. Highly recommended; you won't regret your purchase.

I finally replaced my inexpensive knives after 7 years. What a world of difference! All I can say is that if you cook, it is worth every penny to invest in a superior set of knives like these. They handle so beautifully and slice through vegetables as if they were butter. All without having to sharpen them before every use. I cook a lot and can go several weeks between sharpenings.

This set is such a bargain. I've seen the knives sold individually in cooking shops for $50-100 a piece. It's a fabulous wood block, also, with extra slots in case you hang on to some of your cheaper knives or you plan to purchase more knives later.

Every time I use one of these, I wonder why I waited so long!

I was tired of buying cheap knives only to have to spend as much time trying to sharpen them as I did actually chopping with them. I was at a friend's house and he had these wonderful Wusthof knives. I was so impressed I had to order my own a big investment for someone as cheap as me. But let me tell you, they are worth every penny! Now cutting and chopping is done in half the time with much better results.

One drawback I didn't realize how rusty my knife handling skills had become. I was so used to dull cheap knives that I had become quite aggressive.
