Victorio VKP1010 Apple and Potato Peeler, Suction Base

Victorio VKP1010 Apple and Potato Peeler, Suction BaseThis item peels apples amazingly fast, as fast as you can turn the handle.

It makes the job of peeling and slicing the apples the shortest part of the job when preparing apple desserts.

Really worth the money spent, in saved time and frustration.

It will peel, core and slice an apple as fast as you can turn the handle, about 30 seconds per apple.

You'll probably peel more apples then you need, just because it's neat to watch it work.

Minus: You have to hold the cutter back until it gets started on BIG apples (or LARGE potatoes).

You need a smooth non porious surface to attach it too or it requires two hands to use it.

love this, works great use also on cucumbers and anything else that will fit. love the uniformity. Make sure your counter is try, a wet or moist counter wont allow sucction to happen.

This is my first peeler, so I didn't exactly know how to compare one from another and I hope this helps.

First, the mouth opening is a good size for Small Apples and Small potatoes or you can simply cut the potato in half so that it fits correctly in opening.

Second: The adjust screw to tension the shaving device is what it is,it's a screw and very difficult it difficult to access with a screwdriver there is no way to adjust the pressure with your fingers.

If this is your first peeler, you must adjust the pressure for every item you place in the peeler, otherwise, you will lose the flesh of the product.

I feel there is probably a better cutting blade out there as well. But how do you find one. It was a cheap learning experience and after using the product a couple of times, I now know what to look for in a replacement. "Wider Mouth opening and easy access to the tension adjuster"

Positive, suction cup works great.

Recently purchased this Apple Peeler as a novelty item for Christmas. My 9 year old daughter loves apples but hates the peel. I taught her how to use a potato peeler but she struggled. With this Victorio Apple Peeler she can have an apple peeled, cored, and sliced in less than 30 seconds. Now she eats an apple a day and loves using this gadget. My 12 year old who used to eat the apple without peeling also loves using this item. I find that the waste less apple using this than other methods.

Want Victorio VKP1010 Apple and Potato Peeler, Suction Base Discount?

I bought this peeler/corer/slicer for use in dehydrating apple slices and after the first use am awarding it four stars.

The machine is a bit fussy in two areas:

the first is that it is very picky about the surface its suction cup will accept. It must be perfectly smooth and my kitchen countertop surface isn't. a smooth surfaced metal cookie sheet worked very well (i doubt a teflon coated one would work all that well).

The second issue is the variety of apple I was using. Red Delicious apples didn't work because they are a bit too soft beneath the skin and the mounting "prongs" chewed up the stem end of the apple. Granny Smith apples worked very well.

Others have griped about trying to peel potatoes with it. I have no intention of using it in that manner so I'll take their word for it.

KitchenAid 8 inch Slicing Knife Red

KitchenAid 8 inch Slicing Knife RedI have been using this knife for about 10 years now and it is still my favorite. It has a nice weight to it, it's well balanced, the handle is comfortable and non-slip, and it has a great edge that sharpens easily. I use this knife for everything. I have a few other more expensive knives and they just sit in the drawer because this one is superior.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but this knife has a really long blade. It is great for slicing my homemade bread, since it can be moved back and forth thru the loaf. It holds an edge very well. I have been using it since September of last year and after an initial sharpening, I have only passed it over my steel a couple of times. Great knife.

Bentgo All-in-One Stackable Lunch/Bento Box

Bentgo All-in-One Stackable Lunch/Bento Box, GreenI've been using my Bentgo for a few days and, generally, it's great... nicely sized, cleans up easily, and works well in the microwave. The product's one weakness is that the containers are not leakprook (as noted in the product description). This prevents you from using it for things like soup, stews, fruits in liquid, etc. Fix this flaw and it would be perfect.

One other note, this is a new company and their website is still going through growing pains. There are a number of broken links and other issues. That said, their customer service does respond to emails pretty quickly.

I love my Bentgo! I was getting tired of using ziplock bags (too much waste) as well as glass containers (too clunky) and mismatched plastic containers (well okay. I realize that's just fine and functional, but I wanted something *sleek*, you know?). Hunting for Bento boxes online, I decided to go for the Bentgo as my first Bento to see if the Bento lifestyle worked for me.

The price point is phenomenal for the size and quality. Go ahead and do a Google search for Bento box providers and you'll see what I mean. I found that, for about this price, you could get big Bento boxes that weren't microwave or dishwasher safe, or you could get teeny Bento boxes made out of durable, food-safe plastics. Now you see why I picked the Bentgo a decent sized Bento that is microwave, dishwasher, fridge, and freezer safe, as well as BPA-free for under $15! Wow!

Now for the Bentgo's performance. I LOVE this thing. I know some have mentioned they would like the size to be a little larger, but I have no qualms here. I normally put a leftover meal (i.e. chicken and rice something or other, pasta with a thick sauce, etc) in the lower compartment, with cold fruit and veggies in the top divided portion. I have also been able to pack a sandwich in the lower compartment if I cut it diagonally and situate the pieces so that they fit. I haven't had any situations where I wish I could pack more food in the Bentgo or anything like that. That's considering my usual lunchtime appetite, so YMMV. I'm not normally one to take salads for lunch, so I can't speak to how it works for salads, and that's where I have seen most people have issues with the Bentgo.

As far as the Bentgo's watertightness goes, I have not had any issues here, either so far. For thicker sauces, such as a thicker dressing (ranch, thousand island, etc) and some pasta sauces that aren't particularly viscous such as spaghetti sauce or thicker Alfredo's and pestos should not present any problems at all, really. As long as you're not replacing your football with your Bentgo or tossing it gleefully into the air as you walk, these sauces shouldn't come loose. I wouldn't recommend packing any oil and vinegar or broth-based soups in this thing, as they recommend against it, and I can see why. The silicone barrier seals well enough, but not completely, and the same goes for the upper lid. I have packed saucy dishes and ranch dressing in my Bentgo and have had no problems at all as long as I keep it upright.

The strap also works well and fulfills its duties admirably: it appears to be strong, durable, and does it's job keeping the two compartments fitted together well.

My only nit-picky item would be that the silicone barrier does stain, but it washes clean completely with just the stain left behind. This is purely cosmetic, and not anything I am concerned with at all, but it's worth mentioning. A simple bleach followed with a boil may take care of this issue, but I haven't tried that yet. Also, the utensils do pop out occasionally, but not always (for me). If they do pop out, I have found they do still keep the utensils in place during transit, they just aren't stuck in there.

The Bentgo delivered on everything I was looking for in a Bento: size, ease, and durable plasticity. I am now happily enjoying the Bento lifestyle, thanks to the Bentgo!

Buy Bentgo All-in-One Stackable Lunch/Bento Box Now

I got these on sale, but still feel I may have overpaid.

1st: The utensils are neat, but don't fit very well in the slots and therefor don't stay secure in my experience. Plus, the fork tines are fairly wide, so I actually don't even bother to use any of them.

2nd: The band (by design) fits tightly. This is good, however it's a bit tricky to get on the set.

3rd: I've been using one for about a week. I washed it in the dishwasher initially and have hand washed each day since. The top box now has warped a bit around the center divider and the lid does not like to stay on at this point. I can get it on and as long as I put the band over it immediately, it still works. So even though they're dishwasher and microwave safe, the top box will warp.

If you are still interested in this product, my advice is to use the separated section for cold foods and hand wash that.

tl;dr utensils are crappy and the separated section will warp with heat.

Yes .. in the Fissler Santoku knife.

This is a super-high-quality German knife, full tang, sharp, nicely weighted, balanced .. simply perfect.

The blade is thin enough for delicate work and just thick enough for light chopping of carrots and harder vegetables. Handle is heavy enough to give good weight and strength.

BTW, I own a $100 Kyocera ceramic knife .. too fragile. I don't use it anymore.

Pampered Chef Grapefruit Knife

Pampered Chef Grapefruit KnifeThe Pampered Chef Grapefruit Knife

I've been using this grapefruit knife for several years and bought a new one only because I didn't bring my old one with me when I came South for the winter and discovered the difficulty cutting grapefruit without it. It does a very good job and does it quickly. It will dull slightly over time but you wouldn't necessarily notice it unless you compared it with a new one.

First off, I love pampered chef products! This is a nifty knife and does an amazing job! best grapefruit knife! Hands down!

This knife still requires another knife to section the grapefruit. I had a different pappered chef grapefruit knife that had a straight edge on one side of the knife and a curved knife edge on the other. It was more useful because it was the only implement needed. So if I could, I'd use the old one. I'll keep this one because it does do a good job on the curved surface of the fruit.

Gorham Melon Bud 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1

Gorham Melon Bud 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1Gorham Melon Bud 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1 I have owned this flatware for several years now and I am very disappointed in it. I have 14 place settings and all the serving pieces so I am heavily invested in this set. I liked the fact that it was a versatile style with a good weight, it was comfortable in the hand and it offered a large assortment of serving pieces. However, this set does not hold up well in the dishwasher. You must hand wash and dry this set to keep it looking it's best. Even with hand washing and drying, I still get occasional rust spots and tarnishing and I must polish the pieces every several months or so. For the price paid, this flatware requires much too much care. If you don't want to baby your flatware, look elsewhere.

We've been using this flatware for six years now since we married in 2005. All the pieces look in tip top condition. I also had issues with spots and rust on the blade of the knives. It would come off with a little Dawn and the scrubbing sponge. I've since learned that most all knives use a different metal combination for the blade as compared to the handle. They key to not having spots or rust to remove is to wipe off any oils like butter or mayo before putting it in the dishwasher. Once I began doing that the issue stopped. We run our dishwasher every three days on average as it's just me and my husband.

We've owned our Melon Bud set since our wedding in 1987 and the set has stood the test of time. The set, of course, has the expected wear of 23 years of daily use, but we've observed absolutely no need for special care, i.e. polishing, rust removal etc. Our set has been run through various quality dishwashers in towns with the some of the hardest water around, and have observed no stains or build-up, as would be expected from stainless steel. We find the set is well made. Each piece is well balanced and the right weight, i.e. not too light and not too heavy. The rounded edges are far more comfortable than more modern looking squared edges. All in all, we've been extremely satisfied with this set, and as time has progressed, we've always chosen to replace the lost pieces over the years, rather than move on to something new.

These pieces have held up very well for me for the past 21 years, which is why I am choosing to add to my service rather than purchase an entirely different pattern. Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Bread Knife

Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Bread KnifeThere are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Culinar line is an all stainless steel look, rather than a black handle. Although the picture and some descriptions want you to think this is a single piece knife, be advised that the hand is a separate piece of stainless steel molded onto the tang. I personally prefer the handle of the Grand Prix and Classic, because the grip is surer for me, but this is, to some extent, a matter of personal preference. This series "looks" more professional to some (like a Viking stove).

This particular model, the 8 inch bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy. My only quibble is the length. I find the 9 inch bread knife to be a better length for most loaves of bread.

I recommend the Wusthof 8" bread knife, but I would try out the 8 inch and the 9 inch to see which you prefer.

Reizen Pro Knife with Slicing Guide

Reizen Pro Knife with Slicing GuideMy knife work is not chef quality; with this type of knife I don't have to wait and work years to gain those skills. I've used other better quality serrated knives with guides, they're excellent for repetitive or very fine slicing of meats and vegetables. This one, not so much. The guide is stamped, not forged or cast, and the guide adjustment set screw is threaded into plastic, so I don't have much hope for it lasting long. Because of those to factors, when set to slice very thin, the guide and blade are not parallel, resulting in slightly wedge shaped slices. Of course, the knife I would buy instead is $85: Amazon.com: Victorinox Cutlery Precise Slice Knife, Right Hand: ...

You can't cut anything with the guide attached because it sticks down lower than the blade. We've tried many configurations to make it work. Including having what we're cutting hanging off a chopping block, but we don't have a chopping block tall enough (it sticks way below the blade). Don't waste your money on this knife.

Design of the guide in relation to the cutting edge prevents you from cutting all the way through. In order to use it one must lift the bread off the cutting board in order to be able to use the knife as intended. This produces a ragged and lousy cut.

WMF Profi Plus Lid Gripper

WMF Profi Plus Lid GripperI received this gripper about six months ago and have been very happy with it's performance. It can close up enough on small caps (such as soda bottles)that it will hold tight while I open them. It expands to a large enough diameter to open tops on large jars, as well. It provides good leverage, making the opening of jars much easier for me, since I have arthritis in my thumbs and have trouble gripping anything. It's only drawback is it doesn't work so well on some odd things: I can't use it to get off the bottom of the blender container if it's screwed on too tight, for example. I'm not sure it was meant for that sort of work, anyway! But for all-purpose, kitchen jar and bottle opening, it's a great gadget.

My mother and myself we always won the jar opening competitions in our family. My three very strong brothers have been useless! Sure enough, we both had our tricks. But some years ago I had to realize that my mother could not open jars anymore. The strength in her hands had been gone. I found the jar opener for her and she loves to work with it. She had been so impressed that I bought one for myself too. And I can say too that it is a very helpful tool. The opener is easily adjustable and holds the jar tightly for the opening of the jar. No spilling, no mess, just useful.

Shun 11-Slot Bamboo Block

Shun 11-Slot Bamboo BlockNo one ends up with just a couple of good Japanese Kitchen knives. I had just bought several expensive knives and my old block just wouldn't fit the larger blades of the Japanese knives. This one was made for the wider knives. Mine holds a couple of gyutos, a Banno Bunka, Nakiri, 2 pettys, and I measured it and it will house my new Hiromoto Sujihiki slicer, the longest one.

I like the slanted angle and the arrangement of the slots makes for easy entry and removal without other knives gettng in the way.

Good price at about $60 as I believe it sold for about $90, although I dont think I would buy it at that price.

The best feature is that it will hold 4 WIDE CHEF type knives....most others don't

And the HORIZONTAL layout is easier on the blades...won't dull them.

The other one I have is vertical and the blade road cuts against the block when you withdraw the knife.

As I slowly replace my old Sabatiers with new Shuns I sprung for their block. I've actually never owned a "knife block" before so I have nothing to compare this little bamboo beaut to but I am impressed by its ability to both sit on a counter and hold knives of different sizes all at the same time. Mine came with a discreet Shun logo on a brushed aluminum plate pressed onto the lovely bamboo. Some block!

Buy Shun 11-Slot Bamboo Block Now

I first purchased a J.A. Henckels International 10-Slot Knife Storage Block from Amazon to hold my 4 Shun products: honing steel, 8'' chef's knife, 6'' chef's knife, and a 5 1/2 inch Santoku. Well, I was unpleasantly surprised when I found that I could not fit those three Shun knives because of the very small holes in the Henckels block. So, I reluctantly spent three times the price of the Henckel block and ordered the Shun 11-Slot Bamboo Block. The reason I give it only 3 stars is because I simply don't feel it is worth the price at which I paid, especially what it is valued at full retail. When you compare this quality to the quality of the actual Shun knives, it just doesn't fit in the same class. However what are my other options?

I have done research, and I think there may be a correlation between the use of magnetic strips with Shun knives, and their tendency to chip. So I decided a block was the best route. There are not a lot to choose from that will fit the wide Shun knives, so this was kind of my limited option. Here are the main points I see to judge it as not being worth the money:

-Packaging: Although this isn't the biggest deal, when you look at high-end companies and their products, they are presented well at every step. This block came in a completely plain cardboard covering simply to add a little protection. Not an original Shun box or anything.

-There was a little piece of paper with a description of the block, and let me tell you, IT WAS ATTACHED VIA A LITTLE PIECE OF SCOTCH TAPE ROLLED IN A CYLINDER SO THAT IT WAS DOUBLE SIDED. You know, the most cheap way you could attach something like that. I mean, it's almost as if it was a used product that was simply repackaged.

-Quality in general. I am a meticulous person when it comes to high-end things. This is not high-end. It's not like it's terrible, just not what I would expect to see as Shun's leading Block to sell with there AMAZINGLY HIGH-END KNIVES.

Anyway, until I see a better option I would buy again. Just can't give it more than 3 stars.

This item was sent as a gift. The original item arrived and the 'Shun' plaque on the front was glued on crooked. We tried to fix it ourselves but couldn't get it to budge. We requested an exchange, and the replacement item was actually worse. It was strangely larger than the original (significantly), it had several cut marks on it, and the seams where the pieces come together were not finished well. Overall, the quality was disappointing. Since the only problem with the original item was the crooked plaque on the front, we decided to keep that one and return the replacement item instead of the original. We will make another attempt to fix the crooked plaque ourselves, since the block is not terrible otherwise. Strange that the replacement item was so much larger (would not fit in the gift box that the original was sent in), and the workmanship was so shabby. We love our Shun knives, so we were surprised and disappointed by these quality issues.

Wusthof Gourmet 6-Piece Steak-Knife Set

Wusthof Gourmet 6-Piece Steak-Knife SetI have had these for a few years. After the first year one of the tips broke off. A couple of years later another tip broke off, this time cutting an apple.

I don't have the warranty to know where to return these to, so I am stuck with them, but seriously I just want some better knives rather than paying to ship the bad ones somewhere and wait for a possible refund.

Even through I prefer Wustof to Henkels on the high end stuff, we have a cheap set of Henkels stamped steak knives that seem more sturdy and cut better than these.

These are not what you'd expect from Wusthof. The Wusthof symbol on the handle is a STICKER (!!!) which bleaches out after washing. Also, after 1 months use and washing, we're getting rust spots. While these knives are sharp, they are not holding up appearance wise. Very disappointed.

Buy Wusthof Gourmet 6-Piece Steak-Knife Set Now

I have a set of these steak knives and love them.

Unlike most inexpensive steak knives these knives are fine edge and not serrated. I like the cut of fine edge knives. They make clean cuts without shreading. These are stamped knives which are a lot less expensive than the forged Classic knives in my set but they look the same and for how much they are used they perform well at half the price of the forged knives. I have never had the rusting problem, but I hand wash all my knives. These are not stainless steel. I heard once that most of the time when knives rust it is because they are put in the dishwasher. The dishwasher leaves metal deposits on your flatware. When those deposits dry they turn to rust. Come to find out it is usually your dishwasher that is rusting when this happens. I never stick good knives in the dishwasher.

These "fine" knives doesn't stay sharp as long my Chicago Cutlery steak knives and the handles crack at the rivets. The logo-labels peel off leaving the adhesive on the handle. If they had a different sticker on the handle, they would be one quarter the price. I have a full set of Wusthof knives and there is no comparison.

These are quite flimsy and develop rust spots extremely easily. Not the quality one would expect from this company. We have several of Wusthof Classic's line (Chef's, paring, utility, etc) have found them to be sturdy, true, well-balanced in the hand and have held up very well over the past 3 years in our busy kitchen. We didn't expect these steak knives to be of the same quality, but they were suprisingly low quality for the brand and the cost.

Global G-19 - 11 inch, 27cm Flexible Fillet Knife

Global G-19 - 11 inch, 27cm Flexible Fillet KnifeWe were in the market for a flexible fillet knife of the "chef's knife" style, as opposed to the hunting style thin, crescent ones (that are often serrated and smaller). Global is a name brand manufacturer of stamped knives, so we decided to give this a try. *I had also seen this knife in the hands of many a sous chef on Iron Chef and thought that should be a good indicator for its quality.

Apart from the commendable construction, the blade is in fact extremely flexible, and the knife itself is super light. If you are tearing into a large salmon, or meat, it is nice to be able to smoothly glide the knife's edge along without ever really feeling it in your hand. It has done an great job at holding its edge, and of course if you do sharpen it you will want to use a whetstone or send it to be done properly.

You should be aware that this is longer than a 10 inch chef's knife, and therefore may not fit in many knife blocks. We purchased the Wusthof 35 Slot Storage Block, Cherry that works wonderfully with it. A magnet strip would also work nicely (or a drawer).

Perfect for filleting. We still use our 10 inch chef's knife and YOSHIHIRO Hammered Damascus Japanese chef Knife Usuba /Vegetable Knife 6.3" 160mm MADE IN JAPAN knife for most day to day work, but in a pinch this would be a worthy substitute for most kitchen chores.

Pros:

-Quality Construction

-Light

-Flexible blade

-Very long, providing smooth gliding separation

-Holds a keen edge

Cons:

-Not cheap

-Global handle (you will love it, or hate it. we love it.)

-Long so it doesn't fit easily in a knife block, but fine on a magnet

Dr. Oetker 2468 Pizza Stone with Chopping Knife

Dr. Oetker 2468 Pizza Stone with Chopping KnifeI was really excited to get this set from Amazon. I mostly bake frozen pizzas (diGiorno) and was anticipating being able to get a nice crispy crust using the stone.

Turns out I was better off with the perforated baking dish I've been using for many years (Cuisinart AMB-14PP Chef's Classic Nonstick Bakeware 14-Inch Pizza Pan), which does a nice job.

Here's why I prefer the metal pan:

1. The stone must be preheated for 30 minutes. The metal pan allows me to assemble my pizza on the counter while the oven heats.

2. The stone is heavy and difficult to get in and out of the oven. The metal pan is easy to grab one-handed with an oven mitt.

3. Without a pizza shovel, it's hard to get the pizza off the stone. I can give the metal pan a quick shake and it's off.

4. I don't worry about breaking the metal pan.

So, the stone looks really nice, and the metal lifting frame is also nice, but the stone slides out of it rather easily making for a pretty unstable setup when trying to manhandle a 400 degree heated stone without burning myself.

I'm sticking with the pan, but as I said the pizza knife is really useful. I've also found that it make quick work out of chopping nuts... ;-)

Good product at a good price. It contains all the pieces necessary for baking and cutting a piazza. Would recomend to anyone.
