Bark Cheese Board

Boska Holland Taste Collection Tree Trunk Cheese Board, SmallMy husband loves fancy cheeses and I got this for him as a present to go with a cheese-of-the-month subscription. I ordered it in a size small and it's a nice size for about 3 cheeses, some crackers, a few nuts & some fruit. The board is beautiful and unique. I give it 4 stars rather than 5 only because a little of the bark had crumbled off in the packaging when I opened it. This is to be expected, I think, but just keep in mind that the bark may not stay on forever and it's a board you'll have to wash and store with care if you want to keep it looking nice.

Gotta say for the price, it's totally worth it. Nobody said pimpin is easy but with this here tray it really is!

Hummingbird & Honeysuckle Tempered Glass Cutting Board

Hummingbird & Honeysuckle Tempered Glass Cutting BoardI bought this for my mother-in-law last mothers day. She loved it. Doesn't scratch, the colors/picture is very pretty. Very sturdy. I highly recommend it if you or someone you know loves humming birds

Small and pretty glass cutting board looks nice on my counter and now I'm no longer eating little bits of plastic from the plastic cutting boards. Colors are a smidge brighter in real life than in the photo.

Dexter-Russell 6-by-3-Inch Stainless Steel and Walnut Dough Scraper

Dexter-Russell 6-by-3-Inch Stainless Steel and Walnut Dough ScraperI wanted a high-quality dough scraper/bench knife and kept coming back to this one from Dexter-Russell. This is a simple piece of kitchen equipment so there's no sense in belaboring the point other than to say that it's a pleasure to still be able to find a US-made product, and of such high quality, to boot. I'm going to take the manufacturer at his word that the handle is walnut; whatever it is, it's beautiful (although I wish the ends had been sanded smooth) and feels wonderful in the hand. The blade is stainless steel and has a good edge (I wouldn't subject it to the rigors of granite or marble too often, though, unless you want to deal with sharpening it). It has a nice heft when being used and, contrary to a previous review, there's no evidence whatsoever that the tang protrudes on either side of the handle--mine is seated perfectly.

I do recommend using a wood conditioner on the handle periodically to keep it in good shape but other than that, care is easy: just keep it clean and don't subject any part of the handle to water for extended periods (I hand-wash mine). If you treasure good tools and want a scraper that's nice enough to think of in terms of passing on to someone dear, look no further.

Works wonderfully in cast iron, so much better than wood or plastic.

The edge can also be used to cut things up in the pan or on a griddle, watch next time you are near a short order chef cooking up gyros, philly steaks, or similar, I bet they use something like this to chop and maneuver the food on the griddle.

Keep it nice by only handwashing, don't let it soak either. Occasionaly touch the wood up with some food safe oil, like olive or mineral oil.

The sharp corners can be a liability, be careful not to gouge or stab.

I was a bit concerned about ordering this product after reading the earlier review. I received the product in good order and I found it to be a very well made and a worthy piece of equipment for professional use. Amazon specifies the handle to be made of walnut, but the model I received is clearly made of rosewood. I am very satisfied with my purchase!

I have owned this cutter for years and it is the only one to purchase. The rounded handles of other cutters look ergonomic, but don't have the wonderful feel of scraping or cutting dough as this one. Think about it. Round handles lose the pressure of your hand as you maneuver this tool to do its work. The handle is made of cherry wood and attached with brass rivets. It is simply a work of art. I love love love using this S496 Dexter tool and realize my appreciation every single time I use it. And so will you.

Want Dexter-Russell 6-by-3-Inch Stainless Steel and Walnut Dough Scraper Discount?

I purchased the Dexter Russell dough scraper since it is made in the USA. I was concerned due to the negative review about the product quality.

The scraper I received has a nicely made smooth wood handle with the blade inserted without exposure on the ends of the handle. The wood is not walnut and appears to be the rosewood. However, this does not detract from the product quality as both woods are good.

There are some surface scratches on the blade, but this does not detract from the utility of this scraper.

I tried out the scraper with a batch of dough I was making into ciabatta bread and the blade cut my dough beautifully. I used a plastic scraper to clean up my countertop as the Dexter scraper probably would scratch.

The logo on the scraper I received is different from the one depicted. However, the same model number is present with USA and the stylized name Dexter.

Henckels International Fine Edge Pro Stainless-Steel 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

Henckels International Fine Edge Pro Stainless-Steel 7-Piece Knife Set with BlockThese are NOT the german henckles they are made in Japan and don't even compare to the german or even spain henckles. I am returning this product as i don't find it worth even the $49. I certainly don't know any stores that would sell this for the $247 or whatever they said the "retail" price was. The block was also dissapointing, it looked plastic. This makes me nervous to buy other amazon products that are at "sharp" discounts in the kitchen section...

first of all be aware of that knives are made in Japan and block is made in China.I thought they were made in Germany when I ordered them. Especially block is awful. I do not recommend this set to anyone because even cheapest knives that I had bought from Walmart (china made-$4) are sharper and cut better. If there is no difference between the cheapest knives from Walmart and this over 70 bucks set what is the point to pay this nonsense difference for a worse one.If you really want a nice set you have to pay what it deserves (check out amazon you will see some real sets cost over thousands)but if you want something that can fulfill the tasks in your kitchen you can easily buy any cheaper alternative rather than these.

Buy Henckels International Fine Edge Pro Stainless-Steel 7-Piece Knife Set with Block Now

The knives are wonderful. They are the really sharp knives and work very well. The knife sharpener that comes with the knifes broke apart when I took it out of the block. Good thing I wasn't sharpening a knife at the time. Use caution when using the sharpener or check to see that it is pushed inside the handle as far as it can so it does not fall apart when using.

Dh bought these for Christmas, 2005. WOW, they are SHARP! Just weeks later, they had already dulled immensely and need to be resharped. I washed and dried them immediately, as advised, but I still have some rust already, less than a year. When I find my reciept, they go back!!

These knives looked much better on the picture than when I got them. They are nice and sharp but not as heavy or as nice as I expected from Henckels. But then again they are the International version which is the ONE GUY thingie and not as nice! They are also Stamped steel if you care that they are forged or not.

They are light weight and look great, so if you like knives that are not too heavy in your hand then these are the ones for you. I like a heavy handle and more weight so that it feels substantial in your hand and not like a 5 dollar knife, So all in all it's "You get what you pay for"

LamsonSharp 3" x 8" Perforated Turner

LamsonSharp 3' x 8' Perforated TurnerI purchased this after my son decided to hide my old standard spatula that I used all the time. This is a bit larger then I need for making breakfast but works great for my BBQ grill. I've seen these used aboard the different ships I've worked on over the years and noticed that they can take years of commerical grade daily use and still hold up (I've seen some ship original issue spatulas that are going on 15 years of daily use at this point!) Great to support an American made product and company. I would recommend a 3" x 6" for kitchen use.

Stainless Steel Mandolin Slicer

Stainless Steel Mandolin SlicerI've had this exact model for about a decade. It's clunky and inconvenient. The sliding range for the first of two cutters is too narrow so the sliding part slips off the tracks and then binds up. It's easy enough to clean though. I mean it works, sure. But the pressure plate is small and round inside of a large rectangular crevice and comes down at too high of an angle to really hold a collection of radishes well. They slide around so I have to struggle with arranging them. The veggie holder area is quite small so you can't do long pieces beyond about 2.5 inches. I think this would useful to someone in a cafe who used it all the time so they got used to it, but for occasional use it's kind of a drag. I gave it 3 stars since it's certainly very high quality. The first of two blades is a bit chipped even though I haven't used it but a couple times a year. It's old world design though has me online as I write this, searching for other options to make zucchini and radish slivers. Maybe a rotary slicer? When I try to clean this it swings around in the sink and threatens to break my heirloom dishes since the support bracket is free swinging. It's like a violin I'm not good at playing and I can't quite tell if it's me or the violin. It doesn't finish the last 1/8" of a zucchini, so I get a snack that way. Slivers of zucchini and radish do make perfect low carb Atkins diet friendly salad bases though, so either I need to tweak this thing by bending the slots further closed that the moving part slides on or I need to get a more modern design. This beast is too clunky. I want to like it but I can't. This represents the perfection of an old world design. I think it makes more sense to look at either the $400 Shun Pro or something cheap that's perfected in plastic. I'm much more picky than most. If I say I kind of like something it means it's *fine*.

Edit: for making julienned zucchini and radish slivers my old Robot Coupe food processor grating blade disk works PERFECTLY. Instead of slicing long it cuts short 1" long very thin slivers so the zucchini peel gives a very nice visual effect on the ends instead of becoming inconsistent tough dark green noodles mixed in with the white pump noodles. Perfect for scoop-able salad. I don't need a working mandolin after all. I used to associate a grating blade disk with grated cheese, meaning little bits, but I'm getting perfect little toothpick like pieces that really bring out the flavor of the crunchy veggie without turning it into a pump whatsoever! It actually is so noodly that I get a pasta sensation from it, a very good thing for an Atkin diet lifestyle. So I would highly suggest that people look into food processors instead of $$$ mandolins.

I researched mandolines thoroughly online before ordering this model. The day after I ordered it, a dear friend gave me a Japanese plastic simple one that only slices thin. it does nothing else. It actually is easier to use, in part because the surface is uninterrupted. In addition the plastic one, being totally simple, has no little places for pieces of food to hide at clean up time. Nevertheless, the Bron does have more features, such as wavy cuts and lattice cuts. It also has infinitely graduated thicknesses and can make julienne cuts. However, the cuts are not always easy or elegant to make. Cucumbers, for example, usually get stuck on their skin. I am not willing to peel them because they are organic and most of the nutrients are in the skin. So my cuts are imperfect, and, while not ideal, it's ok.

Buy Stainless Steel Mandolin Slicer Now

This mandoline is a sturdy and well-made tool, excellent for making even and precise slices, shoestring potatoes (pommes allumettes), waffle-cut potatoes, ordinary French fries, and so on. I have had mine for about 15 years, and it works like new.

The main problem with it is that it's expensive. There are inexpensive plastic slicer/shredders available, such as Benriner (often sold in Japanese and Korean grocery stores), which work just as well. In fact, they're actually better for very fine slices and shredding. If you only want to make French fries, you're probably better off getting a French-fry cutter, which is faster, but it's hard to get blades fine enough for true shoestrings.

The Benriner plus a French-fry cutter together will cost about half as much as the mandoline, and work as well or better; of course, they are nowhere near as heavy-duty, but that won't matter for most home users.

The Bron mandoline has a couple of minor disadvantages. On older models, the feet would scratch countertops, but I believe this has been fixed now. Although most parts are stainless, the rivets and screws do rust a little; this has not been a problem.

The pusher does not work very well. On the other hand, this is a dangerous tool used without the pusher -it produces especially ugly cuts if you're julienning. My solution is to use a cut-resistant fillet glove (also good for the Benriner). This gives you far better control and thus less waste.

Yamazaki Old Denmark 5 Piece Placesetting, Service for 1

Yamazaki Old Denmark 5 Piece Placesetting, Service for 1For the past 21 years, Yamazaki "Old Denmark" has graced the table of our home. It's beauty has not faded nor has it's strength. It managed to survive the raising of a child, three dishwashers and countless meals and diners.

Over the years, we have added to our collection; twenty place settings, many extra serving pieces and just last summer-ice tea spoons. It's actually difficult to tell the new from the old. Another plus-the pattern hasn't been discontinued. Highly recommended!

Yamazaki's really hit it on the head with the Old Denmark pattern. These are very beautiful well made (in Japan) and nicely weighted. It is a satin finish and will scratch if abrasives are used. If you are thinking of buying these, note that the length appears a bit short and that the forks have 3 tines not 4. The hafnia is a great alternative to Old Denmark, a bit more balanced and seemingly longer and therefore easier to hold. I highly recommend Yamazaki take advantage of Amazon's 4 for 3 promotion, this is the best price you will get on these!

Solid, hefty, incredibly well made, long-lasting, and they complement any other tableware you may pair them with.

A friend of mine had a dinner fork of this pattern. Only one fork. It was used as a small serving fork. After using it I went online to find out what it was. I purchased eight place settings. I can see why the pieces retail at $85 per place setting. The quality is the best I have ever encountered and the balance of each piece is perfect. I am sorry that I didn't know about this company and pattern 20 years ago.

I too own this pattern. Since the late 80's, as I recall. All of the great things about the looks and quality are true. I've used mine for daily use since buying, as I loved the style so much. And use most of the time for special dinners, as well. The thing that I am so thankful to report, is how I got my set. I bought these at old Weinstocks, on compounded discounts....something like 50% and 40%.....all I remember is the cost to me PER PLACE SETTING was $13.50. And I bought about 10 PS and serving pieces at the time. Later, I added more pieces, but not at the original great deal, but much better than today's going prices. So I'm a very happy camper. They are still lovely to this day. And all I do is hand wash or dish washer. Imagine if I got off my duff and hand polished. $13.50/PS!!! THAT was my luckiest of shopping day.

Wusthof blade guard 10 cooks

Wusthof blade guard 10 cooksI have had no trouble with this protector. I put it on my knife, and it stays there. Note that I am not tossing this into a bag and carrying it around, but, it fits my 10" knife and holds firm as it should. I expect that this size would not work well on a smaller knife, so, be sure to purchase the correct size.

So, if your purpose is primarily storage to sit around, I can say that it works well for me. The knife goes in and comes out easily.

The felt inside is easy on the knife and nicely cushions a global chef's knife. However, if it ever gets dirty (and what doesn't get in a kitchen), I see no way of properly cleaning this device nor did it come with any cleaning instructions. So, it seems like it has a built in limited life.

edit: -1 star after original review because my knife easily slips out of this when it is my drawer, defeating the purpose of the knife protector.

I really have to wonder about the review that says the Wusthof Blade Guard falls off the knife. Certainly not my experience! It slides easily onto my Dexter-Russell Chinese Cleaver (8" x 3 1/4), stays put, doesn't scratch the knife thanks to the velvet lining, protects the edge from damage, and avoids accidental cuts when rummaging in the drawer where I keep the cleaver. What more could anyone expect from this product?

I LOVE this lightweight cover! My only complaint is that it is much longer than the blade of my knife. It's soft on the inside which helps wick any moisture I may have missed when drying, and it feels sturdy even though it's thin.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin 22-Slot Knife Storage Block

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin 22-Slot Knife Storage BlockYes it is just a large block of wood with slots cut in, but if you have a large collection of Henckel knives and outgrew your block or have a few random knives you would like to store together with your set, then this block is the way to go. Looks good on the counter, knives go in on their side, room for a medium cleaver, steel, and shears, as well as 8 steak knives.

I love my new knife block. I read many reviews and looked a different types for a long time before I decided on this particular model. I have a wonderful collection of Cutco knives (the best, in my opinion) and wanted to get all of them in one block. This fits the bill. The slots are large enough to accommodate my largest butcher knives and the Santoku knives and I have room for all my steak knives in the lower section. The block is well-finished and not so large that it takes up too much counter space.

I bougth this to replace the cutting blade that I had for my 'Vintage Kitchenaid" which had dulled. My machine is over 40 yrs old (mom's). Nice sharp edges and ground the meat well (chicken). However, when washed and dried in the dishwasher the blade was rusty. I was able to remove the rust by hand but this product can not tolerate the dishwasher--disappointed as it is supposed to be stainless steel. This is why it is 3 stars and not 5.

Chef Works ECHR-WHT Madrid Egytian Cotton Chef Coat, Size 40

Chef Works ECHR-WHT Madrid Egytian Cotton Chef Coat, Size 40This is the perfect Egyptian Cotton Jacket for when you need to look extra nice in the kitchen. I have two of them that I maintain and use when I stage (work a night for free to experience the culture in a certain kitchen and learn their techniques or as a second step to an interview). They're great for that as they look very professional but don't have any colored trim. I think that trim makes you look like your competing with the head chef.

These jackets are the perfect weight to stay crisp and remain light enough to keep you cool. You will need to starch and iron them, and when you do please keep an extra eye on the details. They will give you that extra push that you're dressed well without showing off.

The only bad thing is that they are spendy and they will stain. Of course the finer the cotton the harder it is to get stains out but I've found that dropping them in an oxyclean soak as soon as you can after use and working them a bit over a couple days in the soak will prevent almost any food stain. Of course there is no cure for a metal stain from your honing steel or for carbon.

Overall great jacket. Every cook should keep one pressed and ready for that impromptu opportunity in your dream kitchen or the brunch that you have to cut prime rib in the dining room.

Paper Plate Holder Napkin Dispenser Knife Fork Spoon Organizer, BBQ or Picnic Caddy

Paper Plate Holder Napkin Dispenser Knife Fork Spoon Organizer, BBQ or Picnic CaddyI taped up the napkin weight and used that area to hold several condiments. I have it placed in an office kitchen space and use it to store utensils, paper plates and condiments in neat confined space. It works great.

I did not want to purchase a cheap plastic dispenser so I am thrilled with this commercial grade dispenser. It may be overkill for home use, but I didn't want to have to replace it in a year or two. I recently used it for an outdoor party and several people commented on it and asked for the link so they could purchase one. The spaces for the napkins and plates are generous. I was able to put both large and small plates in the verticle section. The only thing it's missing for party use is a handle for portability. This is a great storage option for small apartments with limited drawer space--store your utensils up right!

Iron Chef IC-3002 Ceramic 6-Inch Chef's Knife

Iron Chef IC-3002 Ceramic 6-Inch Chef's KnifeI'm a foodie and was very excited to try out this ceramic knife. This was the first time that I had the opportunity to experience the ceramic technology. It did not disappoint! This chef's knife is true to it's description of being light weight, it has a really good feel in the hand, very comfortable. I of course had to test the "stain" proof and jumped right in with chopping fresh cranberries. It slices with precision, no smushed fruit and it cleaned beautifully. This knife will definitely be my go to knife in prepping salads and fruits. As this is a high quality knife it does require high quality care, not tossing it in the sink or using it without a cutting board. All of my quality pieces in the kitchen are treated with great care, this knife included.

I purchased this knife for the sale price of $29.99 having previously acquired the 5 inch "As Seen On TV" version from CVS for only $14.99 (Yoshi blade). I was so disappointed with this knife that I felt compelled to write my first product review ever. Compared to the much cheaper version I purchased from CVS, the handle and grip were not nearly as good and the cutting ability of this product paled in comparison. I had trouble slicing through the skin of a tomatoe. Once I forced the knife to break the skin, it was ok. As a side note, the $15 version came with a storage sleeve to store the knife in when it is not in use the $30 one did not. Needless to say, I am going to return it.

I'm giving it 3 stars, but for some these could be a 5 star knife. For others a 1 star. Here's my reasoning.

Definitely lightweight. With its thin white blade, and some of the warnings on the box, I could be quite brittle. I'm not about to see how much pressure I can put on it till it snaps. But definitely don't drop it. Tip or blade could chip easily.

Another issue is I store my knives on a magnetic bar. Not this one.

It boasts that it won't impart a metal taste to your food, but I've never had anyone ask if I used a steel knife because of the food's taste.

It certainly is unique and although they claim it will withstand years of use before sharpening, I can't be sure what one would use to sharpen it.

Also, despite their boasts, it is not as sharp out of the box as other knives (Shun comes to mind).

So 3 stars for a usable knife that is definitely a conversation piece. Worth the $30 in a Gold Box deal. I wouldn't spend the regular price of $70+ for a 6" knife that only needs to get nicked to ruin it.

Will report back after some serious use. So far, a satisfying purchase.

Norpro Cut-N-Slice Flexible Cutting Boards, Set of 3These flexible cutting boards are truly awesome. 1) They don't take up a lot of space. 2) They're easy to clean. 3) They don't cost big bucks. 4) They work just fine and being able to bend them really helps get your items off the cutting board and into a pot, bowl or discard the scraps. 5) And the various colors actually helps us make sure we don't go cutting some vegetables on the same cutting board that just had a piece of meat on it.

The only thing I have against them is that they curl up after they're washed by hand. Otherwise they work just fine.

I was very excited about these cutting boards when I bought them. They were quite thin when they arrived but that didn't really bother me until...I put them in the dishwasher after using them ONCE (the description says 'dishwasher-safe' however no actual instructions were included in the pkg) for the first time and when I took them out they were all sort of 'warped' and now they don't lay flat AT ALL. I was very bummed and thought maybe all the flexible board were liked this, however...

The next day I was at a major discount retailer and saw a much thicker, sturdier pack of FOUR cutting boards for $5.xx! I bought them that day and haven't used the other cutting boards since! They are SO much better! So, I recommend you buy the 4-pk of flexible boards I mentioned at your local retailer NOT these poor quality ones.

UPDATE! Ok, so I had these cutting boards stored in a cabinet next to the other thicker cutting boards I mentioned I bought. I had a heavy stone cookie pan laying flat against all of them...and good news!...the Norpro boards I bought on amazon flattened out and look good again! So, maybe it just takes a little more effort to flatten them after each dishwashing.

These cutting boards are less of a cutting board and more of a plastic funnel/mise en place tool.

After using them the first time they retain knife marks as permenant bends in the plastic, durability rating of .5 stars. They also do not retain their original flat shape in a reasonable manner.

I bought a clear set years ago and liked them. They were white like my countertops and as bad vision set in it was harder to tell whether I was going to cut on the counter or the mat. Then I spotted these colored ones and now I can see where I'm cutting again. They last forever and are handy to use to dump what ever you cut into the pan or bowl. I really like the colors!!
