Kuhn Rikon Mini-Pro Knife Sharpener

Kuhn Rikon 2940 Mini-Pro Knife Sharpener, BlackI have a bunch of Kuhn Rikon knives. I wanted to spend a fortune on high end knives like Shun, but the the Kuhn Rikon knives did such a good job that, with an entire set costing less than a single Shun, I quickly abandoned "status" and bought the Kuhn Rikons.

No matter who makes a knife or how well the knives are treated, they will eventually need sharpening. Since the knives carried the Kuhn Rikon label, I decided the sharpener should, too. The sharpener does not disappoint! Just a few strokes and my knives are just as sharp as the day the were unsealed! The sharpener is virtually idiot-proof since all one has to do is pull a knife through a few times.

The one odd thing about the sharpener is that it's awkward to open at first. It was a bit sticky. However, the sharpener does such a good job that I decided not to take off any stars. DEFINITELY recommended!

I have several Kuhn Rikon knives, and love them. They are so much better than the more expensive knives that I own. So, when I saw this sharpener advertised on TV, I came to Amazon to see if I could find a better deal (which I did), and ordered it. It arrived within a few days, and I immediately sharpened all of my knives. I can't really say that I saw much of a difference in the before and after sharpening. I have another knife sharpener that seems to work just as well, and cost half as much. I am giving it 3 stars because it is OK...but wouldn't recommend or buy again.

I'm not a knife snob. I can't afford the really top-notch blades, and I've never taken the time to learn how to use a whetstone or a sharpening steel. But I do like the Kuhn-Rikon and Pure Komachi knives I have, and when their edges finally dulled, I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of buying all-new blades.

I took a chance on the Kuhn-Rikon Mini Pro, and it's great! 20 swipes through the disks, and I can cut through an orange without putting any pressure on the knife handle. The sharpener is small and tucks away nicely. It may not be the connoisseur's choice, but it works for me!

Fox Run Poultry Shears, Stainless Steel

Fox Run Poultry Shears, Stainless SteelI first found out what these were for when I was working in a Kosher Take out place on 108th Street in Forest Hills, NY, called Berso Kosher Foods. While still in Highschool, I coulsd not wait to get to work and slice up some barbequed chickens with these sheers for our customer at $4.95/hr. It was quite an experience. Now that I am all grown up and make my own rotisserie chicken at home, I like using these same exact sheers to slice up my chicken for my family.

The shears work great for bone and meat. They do not cut skin or fat very well as the blades do not scrap against each other strongly. I will try sharpening the blades and see if that helps.

The one down side is the handle lock is poorly designed but I can live with this.

Le Creuset Stoneware Petite Au Gratin Dish

Le Creuset Heritage Stoneware Petite Oval Au Gratin Dish, VolcanicWe purchased 2 of these, yes they are tiny as petite indicates and we still bought them knowing they would be small and we are happy with them. What I am not happy about is the information under Product Details section: product dimensions says: 6.8 x 4.2 x 1.2 and the product weight says an amazing 7 pounds! Obviously this info is not correct but I am here to give the real info:

They are 6.25" (6 1/4") long including the littles handles, they are a scant 4" at the middle of dish only and they are a whopping (just joking) 0.75 (yes 3/4") deep or should I say shallow.

They do not weigh 7 lbs but they do weigh approx 8 ounces. The tail end of the description does accurately state these as being 6 oz capacity. So 4 stars instead of 5 is because of faulty/inaccurate dimensions and weight info in the product description; misleading really.

These are perfect to hold herb infused olive oil for dipping bread, making single serve creme brule, and it is possible to make very small portions of individual potatoes au gratin if you dice the potatoes really tiny and do not add too much cream because it will boil over the shallow sides.

They are what they are so do not expect big things out of a really petite au gratin dish but there is no arguing that these in Cherry Red are gorgeous little baubles for your kitchen and the 4 for 3 promo is outstanding for quality stoneware like Le Creuset which are thick and durable and can go in the oven and microwave. These are really small so you may have to first place them on a baking sheet before placing in oven as they may sit crooked if your oven rack has widely spaced lines like mine.

I do recommend them for beauty and limited function, if you do not mind that and have a few extra dollars but they are not necessary by any means but they are extremely cute.

... purchased two dishes after reading the recommendation in "America's Test Kitchen, Cooking for Two 2010". My first use was for "Berry Gratin", a recipe for berries with a Zabaglione custard needing to be browned under a broiler. These petite gratins are perfect for small portions needing a wide surface for browning under a broiler.

These are really small! I bought one due to the 4-for-3 promotion so it was free as far as I am concerned. I have used it once so far to make my girlfriend a small appetizer of macaroni and cheese. It came out really nice and was amazingly easy to clean easy despite the encrusted cheese off of one of the sides. It is beautiful looking and my g/f finds it amazingly cute. So I highly recommend buying this if you like really small sides for one person. I am not sure exactly how many ounces this actually fits but I believe it is about 6 oz. I think the best use may be for small experimental baked goods done in a toaster oven (I couldn't imagine heating up an oven for less than at least 6 of these).

I finally have a set of 4. They're a great little add-on to your order. I added one to each order until my set was complete. At $10 it's hardly noticeable. So far, I've only baked cornbread in them (individual size of course) and I've used them for petite banana splits.

Joseph Joseph 12 by 16-Inch Worktop Saver with Silver Design

Joseph Joseph 12 by 16-Inch Worktop Saver with Silver DesignI'm glad that this was available.

I've used other boards for cutting and dicing vegetables, slicing French bread, etc. but this is super. Its cutting surface is perfect and being thin is nice too. I'm surprised with its heft and solid feel. Made of glass, unbreakable and heat resistant, that's mind-boggling.

It says it only needs wiping, but I'll use my sanitizing wipes and see how that goes. I thought about the black finish version but decided the silver matched my other s/s ware.

This looks very classy on our counter! I just wish it was a little larger -so a full size cookie baking sheet would fit on it without overhanging the edges.

Wusthof Classic 3-Piece Essentials Set with Chef's Knife, Parer, and Shears

Wusthof Classic 3-Piece Essentials Set with Chef's Knife, Parer, and ShearsCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program As a classically trained chef, I know the value of a good quality knife. A well balanced sharp knife will cut with ease, while a dull knife is more dangerous and requires working harder. Knowing this, I purchased and use an extensive set of Henckels, one of Wüsthof's major competitors.

The Wüsthof Classic 3-piece essentials set consists of an 8" Chef's knife, a 3.5" paring knife, and kitchen shears. The knives are forged from high carbon stainless steel into a well balanced knife. The blade and tang are constructed from a single piece of steel, with synthetic wood handles attached to the tang on each side with rivets. The kitchen shears are similarly constructed with plastic handles, which easily snap apart for thorough cleaning. All components are considered dishwasher safe, however hand washing is recommended.

From visual inspection, the Wüsthof and Henckel Chef's knives have a similar look. If it weren't for minor variations in the handle's curves, they would virtually look identical. The slightly more curvy handle on the Wüsthof feels a bit more natural, but neither feels significantly better in the hand. The Henckel Chef knife is noticeably heavier, but but only weighs .2 ounces more. I use a Henckel 3" paring knife, so Wüsthof's 3.5" knife isn't as comparable. However, they are both roughly the same length and have the same handle differences mentioned in the Chefs knife comparison.

The real differences are seen when comparing my kitchen shears. While the Henckel kitchen shears get the job done, the Wüsthof shears are superior. That's not to say Henckel doesn't offer a comparable version. However my Henckel shears don't come apart and the jar/bottle opener tines are plastic. Although, my manly fingers fit into the handles far more comfortably in my Henckels, while my fingers feel cramped in the Wüsthof shears.

Wüsthof promotes their PEtec (Precision Edge technology) as being 20% sharper than all other comparable knives. I'm not the average knife user, and I know how to maintain my knives sharpness. I can't gauge how much sharper they are compared to the Henckels if at all, but there is no question the Wusthof knives are amazingly sharp.

Pricing between both the Wüsthof Classic and Henckel Pro S knives are comparable. If I were trying to decide which brand to purchase, I'd feel comfortable purchasing either. If I were purchasing a starter set as a gift, I'd buy this Wüsthof Classic 3-piece essentials set as Henckels doesn't currently have a comparable set.

The Wüsthof Classic 3-piece essentials set includes the most used kitchen cutlery tools every kitchen should have. Wüsthof's quality will ensure this set lasts for many years when properly maintained. If you're looking to start your own quality knife set or need a wedding/housewarming gift, the Wüsthof Classic 3-piece essentials set is sure to please.

PROS:

Well balanced sharp knives

High quality construction

Dishwasher safe

Perfect starter set

CONS:

Shear handles too small for average man hands

This my first Wusthof and nothing can maintain a sharper edge (or be more dangerous both my son and I have nicked ourselves getting use to the sharper edge... ouch). The large knife is also very well balanced. Rather than start me off, this set actually finished my set (my other knives are Zwilling J.A. Henckels ... very good knives but not great like this one). Food sticks more to this knife due to it being flat edged rather than curved (but, there are no special sharpeners for the unusual blade). All three are now my favorite kitchen weapons. The shears are easy to take apart. Alas, I've dropped one side into something leaving a hole several times now. :-(

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The kitchen shears is more or less average, but both of these knives are fantastic -they balance well in the hand, they are easy to manipulate, precise, sharp, and appear to be very tough. The handles are well constructed and sturdy. In particular the paring knife is a star -I haven't had such a nice one before and am really going to treasure this one. This would be a great housewarming or wedding gift, and it's made me eager to check out some of the manufacturer's other products. A+.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This set of 3-piece essential set works as advertised. I particularly like the 8" Chef's knife which does a nice job in cutting and slicing with its very sharp and polished edge. I see a very noticeable difference when comparing this knife with my existing set. It provides a clean and smooth cutting job when we use it on meat or vegetables. The Wüsthof set comes with well constructed handles which give a comfortable grip. The kitchen shears also comes apart easily for cleaning.

This Wüsthof 3-piece essential set surely adds to the joy of kitchen cooking. I wish it had come in a nicer packaging as it would make a nice gift set for the kitchen lovers.

Mundial SCRYW5688E-3 3-1/2-Inch Serrated Edge Sandwich Spreader, Set of 3, RedSimple, straight forward, multi-colored spatulas. Built well, shipped quickly, arrived quickly.

Remember that old movie called "UHF" with Weird Al Yankievicz. In it they have repeating commercials about "spatulas". One ad has the owner stating "I loved the product so much I bought the company." "Spatula City", Similar to Remington? Shavers. Anyway, it's a great product that should give years of Food Service usage.

AC 90 Safe and Sound Gear Knife Roll Holds Approx. 60 Knives

AC 90 Safe and Sound Gear Knife Roll Holds Approx. 60 KnivesFor under $13 and free shipping, this is a real bargain. Try finding any knife roll that holds more than 20 knives for under $50 and you'll be hard pressed. Beyond that, you do get what you pay for.

Construction:

The item is made from genuine grade-X pleather that will likely crack and begin to fall apart under light use within a few years. The buckles are very thin and hollowed out and the straps feel like you could pull them in half if you yanked hard enough. The stitching is ok, but the materials are so frail that I would trust the stitching to hold up more than I would the synthetic leather and cloth. The quality is that of a toy purse that would come with a doll or an accessory intended for children under 5. That said, for $12 + change, it is a great temporary solution and I fully expected what I got.

Functionality:

When unlatched and unrolled, the bag is surprisingly long. The cloth flaps you see pictured unfold completely to display about 60, very small, black elastic bands placed very close to one another. The elastic is of poor quality and I expect it to dangle after extended use like the elastic document strap on the sun vizor of a 1992 Honda Civic. This product will hold many-a-pocket knife, butterfly knife, multi-tool, and small dagger. You cannot, however, fit medium-to-large sized knives in the roll unless you ignore the elastic straps intended to keep the knives in place. I have a good number of small pocket knives and it works great for them. Be careful fully loading this badboy though. Under the full weight of 60 knives, I imagine the handle would tear right off the roll when you lifted it if you didn't cradle it under your other arm. Fill it about half full and save the other half for when your elastic fails.

Overall:

I'm happy with the purchase. I mean, $13? It's cheap and it organizes medium-to-small knives and protects them from just being tossed into a drawer somewhere, clanking together, and damaging each other. This is not a quality item (I mean, who would expect it to be at that price?), however it's exactly the right quality for the price, so I gave this product 5-stars despite its failings. Plus, you'll get to feel like a budget "Dexter" unrolling your little bag of tiny folding knives to show off to your friends.

Buy this product if:

You have a lot of small knives you want to organize.

Your 12 year old is getting a good collection going and needs somewhere to put them.

You just can't afford the next best thing right now.

You don't mind spending the price of lunch on something you'll probably throw away in 3 years.

You want to feel like Dexter and you're on a very tight budget.

you see i'm exceedingly cheap when it comes to these things though I need to use for work but whatever. This in a nutshell simply works it doesn't have compartments to get hold things like a mandoline but it works enough for the other stuff.

Cambridge Silversmiths Ozona 50-Piece Flatware Set, 18/10 Stainless SteelWhen we got married in 2002, we had a lovely set of silverware from Crate & Barrel, called Oona. It's about $40 a setting. I love it but it's too expensive for us. I found this set, and it looked pretty close to the Oona setting so I took a chance. It arrived yesterday, and it is *exactly* like Oona, except not quite as heavy as Oona. It's clean and modern and perfect. Love it!

Wusthof Culinar 6-Piece Steak Knife Set

Wusthof Culinar 6-Piece Steak Knife SetWusthof has been known for creating premier kitchen knives for nearly two centuries. Most of their knives, including the ones in this set, have a one piece forged stainless steel blade, bolster, and full length tang. (The bolster is the thick part at the base of the blade next to the handle; the tang is the part that goes down into the handle to stabilize the blade, and the tang's being full length means it runs the full length of the handle, providing maximum stability to the blade.)

Wusthof's classic knife design has handles of black polypropylene riveted to the tang with three stainless steel rivets, and a white trident in circle on a red background as the symbol you may be familiar with the look. In the 1990s, Wusthof introduced the Culinar line for commercial use, with hollow stainless steel handles shaped to provide the best possible grip, and a single stainless steel rivet with the trident symbol securing the tang at the base of the handle. These knives are the steak knives in the Culinar line.

I had been using inexpensive but serviceable steak knives for years, but when I got married in 2000, I wanted to get some nicer steak knives to go with our wedding silver. I'd really liked my classic Wusthof kitchen knives, so I looked at Wusthof's steak knives.

The Culinar knives seemed a good match for wedding silver because of the metal handles, but it wasn't until I picked them up that I was really sold. The handle shape lends itself to really effortless use, both for myself and my wife, and the balance is perfect, solid without being heavy. The blades, of course, cut through steak like butter, and require much less sharpening than the stamped steel blades of most steak knives.

Once I took them home, I couldn't resist using them every day, rather than just with the wedding silver. Two things that I had been slightly worried about the clip at the tip of the blade, and the possibility that the metal handles would feel cold have not been issues at all; in actual use the handles are perfect, and the clip, not as noticeable against a tablecloth as against the black background in the case, helps prevent the knives from being point heavy and gives them a sharper tip that is occasionally useful. They are simply wonderful knives.

Now, it must be said that the list price for these knives reflects their premium quality. If they're not currently on sale, you could consider the Wüsthof Classic 6-Piece Steak Knife Set, with equally good blades and the classic black polypropylene handles, for about half the price. Avoid the even cheaper "Wusthof Gourmet" knives; they have stamped blades like the inexpensive knives you can get in the grocery store, not the quality forged blades of these Culinar series knives.

If these Culinar steak knives are within your price range, though even if you have to stretch a bit definitely get them. You'll thank yourself every time you have steak!

NORPRO "My Favorite Knife" Teflon Safe & Heat Resistant

NORPRO 'My Favorite Knife' Teflon Safe & Heat ResistantThe NORPRO "MY FAVORITE KNIFE" does not scratch nonstick bakeware, even if you use extra pressure in drawing it across the bakeware surface. However, because the short, oddly-shaped blade lacks a serrated edge, this knife doesn't cut cornbread or brownies nearly as easily as the elegant 12" Zyliss Dessert Knife (nonstick surface-safe), or the stubby 8" Bakeware Buddy Non-Stick Surface-Safe Plastic Knife.

From handle tip to blade tip, the Norpro "My Favorite Knife" is 9 inches long; the knife is balanced and the handle is comfortable to hold. My knife is green, and matches the green shown in the product page photo. As an add-on item priced at about $3, this is a pretty good deal. But because of the smooth-edged blade, I rate this Teflon-safe knife at just 3 stars ("It's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

If you are cutting soft butter in a non-stick pan, then this will suit you fine. If you want to cut brownies or lasagna or anything of substance, think again. A TOTAL WASTE!

What is this thing for? It's duller than a piece of plastic silverware, oddly shaped, and I believe they sent me the ugliest color they had... it's a kind of dull, dirty yellow. I guess it would be OK if you had a three-year-old who wanted to "help"" in the kitchen, or chop her play-doh into shapes... it's badly molded, too; there's a sharp ridge (mold mark) on the underside of the handle, which makes it uncomfortable to grip. All in all, a waste of good money.

Gorham Studio 5-Piece Stainless Flatware Set

Gorham Studio 5-Piece Stainless Flatware SetI received 10 placesettings of this flatware in 1997 for my wedding. I just ordered 6 more placesettings of the same at the end of Dec 2009. When I received them I noticed they were not quite as heavy and not as rounded as my older sets. After a few washes, I took a closer look at them as they weren't washing as well either. I noticed the stamp on the back of the new ones says 18/8 not 18/10. I am not as pleased with the new sets and am very disappointed that companies keep selling this product as 18/10 when it is not.

Pros:

1) dishwasher friendly

2) scratch resistant (for the most part but don't scrub the life out of it!)

3) great for everyday use, but stylish enough for formal entertaining

4) the knives are sufficiently sharp for most meat dishes

Cons:

1) they hold heat extremely well, so watch yourself after they've been run through the d/w or been accidentally left in a pan that you're stiring

2) if you eat spaghetti like a true Italian (which I'm not, but I still eat this way), and wind your noodles around your fork by using a spoon, here's a word of warning: The spoons' bowls get scratched by the fork tines too easily and you end up with a dull-looking finish (otherwise, this set is very scratch resistant, as mentioned above). To minimize this, just use the same spoon everytime you need to use one for this function you will unfortunately be able to tell which one you've used before.

Overall, we are very statisfied with this set as a whole. They have gotten daily use for the last 2 1/2 years and have served us well. Even the specialized serving pieces (sold separately)get frequent use.

My husband and I purchased a set of Studio by Gorham flatware four years ago. We considered many brands and styles at the time and decided that we wanted to buy one set that would do double duty for everyday use and for entertaining. I think we made a wise purchase. This flatware has a pleasant heft to it, and by that I mean all of the pieces, not just the knives. The pieces are also well balanced so that they are comfortable in the hand, and the narrow neck which tapers to a wide handle is very elegant. My only slight complaint is that the finish is highly polished, and over time it has become scratched, however, I consider that only a minor flaw since any set of flatware will show wear. I am very pleased with this set, and I think it was one of the best purchases we made when we got married.

This flatware is really nice looking, and it seems to have a good quality. We got them 3 months ago (put them in our wedding registry after analyzing all kinds of flatware) and after a couple times we put it in the dishwasher the knives started to spot with rust. That's pretty disappointing since they said they were "dishwasher safe".

Want Gorham Studio 5-Piece Stainless Flatware Set Discount?

I have searched for this style of flatware for years and there is a reason you can only find it here. It's nowhere near the same quality as my original set purchased in 1998. The weight is very light the old set feels substantial in the hand this feels cheap. It still looks good and feels smooth in the hand no rough edges. The stamp is different. On the original spoon it is stamped into the steel on the handle, the new set it is on the back of the spoon in an ink. It also says Vietnam instead of Japan.

The shipment arrived fine except that the person who sold it obviously smoked cigarettes as the box and packing material stink of it. I haven't decided what I'm going to do. I need more pieces for the holidays. Maybe it's time to find a new flatware and begin to retire this set. My original set has held up beautifully but I don't think these pieces will.

OXO Good Grips Folding Stainless-Steel Dish Rack

OXO Good Grips Folding Stainless-Steel Dish RackI give this product two stars as an average: 3 stars for design, 1 for quality. Because most of my dishes and glasses go into the dishwasher I wanted a large open dish rack for pots and plastic bowls and containers. I don't find the "wave" design holds up these items very well, but there's plenty of room to stack them; the utensil basket isn't really deep enough to keep cooking utensils from flopping over, but I can live with these issues. My biggest complaint is that the stainless steel wires have rust on them! Each juncture where two wires meet has rust around it, but there's also rust at the ends of each wire. Even some of the wires have rust along the lengths with more on the underside than above. I have aluminum pots so they aren't the cause of the rust. A $50 stainless steel dish rack should not rust after only two months use...a major disappoinment!

This is a huge dish rack with excellent drainage. However, the sides are clip on plastic pieces which broke within 2 months of use. The plastic parts hold your glasses and silverware. They clip into the stainless steel rack. The hole in the plastic that gets clippped into the stainless steel broke and no longer stays attached. The glass "fingers" to hold glasses, broke. Not that they ever held glasses. Everything fell off of them. This is the worse dish rack I've ever owned. If the plastic was replaced by metal, it would be great. I'm sorry I dumped my Rubbermaid dish rack and replaced it with this one.

Buy OXO Good Grips Folding Stainless-Steel Dish Rack Now

First let me say, I'll never, ever forgive Rubbermaid for discontinuing large drain boards with the lip on the short end, nor for so seriously downgrading the quality of their dish drains. They were long-lived, functional, easy to clean, and all-around user friendly.

But even Rubbermaid's original quality items don't last forever, so I bought this OXO Good Grips folding stainless steel *contraption* (there's no better word for it), at a pretty steep price, in the hope that at least the capacity would be sufficient. I don't know about you, but the major reason I need a dish drain is for large items that don't go in the dishwasher, like cutting boards and large pots and pans.

I've used it for about 24 hours now, and can say it has a couple of good points but several bad ones as well:

The main good point is that it is quite capacious and works well enough for those big spaghetti pots, long knives, big wooden spoons, plastic dishes and the like while the dishwasher does what it's good at: the plates, glasses, cutlery, and cups. It also appears to keep the counter underneath dry, which matters a lot.

The other major good point is that the board underneath can be rotated so the spout points in whatever direction you wish, so in turn the drain can be oriented as you wish. Thank you, OXO, for that little design thought.

However, it is a delicate assembly. It's got very fancy utensil holders at both ends that are supposed to clip into place to keep them from tipping over. The clips don't stay clipped, so if you try to move the monster, say, to get the spout a little farther over the sink, and accidentally grab the utensil holders to do so, they come unmoored.

The board doesn't stay well seated under the drain, either. The slightest nudge dislodges it, allowing the dishes to wet the counter top. I admit it, I'm a klutz, and nudge it constantly, and constantly have to reposition it.

The cup holders would work only for something like a lightweight (plastic) child's juice cup. They're not tall or sturdy enough to hold even an ordinary coffee mug upright.

This thing is bulky. When the spout is well-positioned to drain into the sink, the utensil holder sticks a good two inches over the sink as well. So that means I hit it all the time while washing anything large. Which means, the utensil holder disconnects and the drain board moves out of place. Sigh...I feel like I'm fighting with it constantly.

Had I designed it, I would have made the wire arcs intended to hold plates vertically at least a half inch larger in all dimensions. As they are they barely hold a cutting board, or, say, the glass carousel from the microwave, upright. I also would have made the water spout longer, and a bit wider.

I haven't yet attempted to clean it. We'll see whether the water spots can be removed with a little dish soap and gentle scrubbing. If not, the next best cleaner is Barkeeper's Friend Lime & Rust Remover. It worked extremely well on the Rubbermaid drain board, let's hope it doesn't destroy this contraption!

ADDENDUM after a full week of use:

I like it better, we've got a more friendly relationship and I've learned how to avoid knocking the board out of place and so forth. I've also discovered that if you put a mug over TWO of the cup fingers at a time, it works as it's supposed to. And finally, today I used a little Barkeeper's Friend Lime & Rust Remover on a wet sponge to wipe away the water spots on the board and it worked perfectly. The board did not melt away, and the spots came off just fine and it looks like new after being dried with a paper towel. YAY!

Very sturdy, holds a lot of dishes, and water drains right out. It's a huge improvement over my last dish rack. My only complaint is that the utensil holders are a little awkward because they don't hold the utensils upright very well. But I like the slots for small knives, which keeps them away from other utensils.

Want OXO Good Grips Folding Stainless-Steel Dish Rack Discount?

I've had this dish rack for less than a year. Some problems were evident right out of the box but others have developed over time. Our kitchen sink has a very high lip and the elevated drip spout is not high enough. Perhaps I should have taken the rack back at that time but I decided to prop the rack up off the kitchen counter. This never worked very well and the rack has consistently bled water onto the counter. This rack will work with an under-mounted kitchen sink but it will not work for sinks with a raised lip.

I was skeptical about the quality of the plastic parts and, sure enough, all are chipped or broken after gentle use. The uprights for holding glasses are flimsy at best. One is now gone. There are structural cracks at the joints where the wire ends engage the plastic.

Finally, this product is not easy to assemble and has a tendency to auto-disassemble. To build the unit, you insert the ends of metal rods into keyholes in the plastic ends, then pivot the plastic down to clip the bottom onto the metal rack. This is a fussy operation and doesn't hold very well. When you move the rack to clean up the water that accidentally pools beneath it, the rack frequently comes apart.

I have been a big fan of this brand for years (best vegetable peeler in the world!) but this item is poorly designed and poorly manufactured. Please avoid.

Kotobuki Seki 6-1/2-Inch Usuba Knife

Kotobuki Seki 6-1/2-Inch Usuba KnifeBearing in mind that this knife only cost $20, it's hard to be too critical of it because it is worth the money. I probably wouldn't be thrilled with any knife in this price range. The blade is stamped and the wood on the handle is unfinished. If you want a quality Japanese knife, keep looking.

Kotobuki Seki 6-1/2-Inch Usuba Knife

I really like the Kotobuki Seki knife, even though it is not a genuine usuba (which has a single-bevel, chisel edge). This knife is actually a nakiri (which has a symmetrical two-sided, double-beveled edge). It is both light-weight and heavy. If lifted near its balance point (4 cm forward of the handle), it is obviously quite light in weight. When lifted by the handle (which in 4 cm behind the balance point), it feels hefty and blade-heavy, but only because of the balance. To me, the sensation of heft in a lightweight knife provides a sense of eagerness to get on with the job at hand (the cutting and slicing).

My Kotobuki Seki knife is very, very sharp, with no assistance from me. It seems to be even sharper than my expensive Global G-5 vegetable knife (which is also a nakiri). Like the Global G-5, the Kotobuki Seki knife has a very thin blade. The blade thickness along the length of the spine of each knife tapers from 1.5 mm (near the handle) to 1 mm (near the far end of the blade). On the Kotobuki Seki knife, the metal that forms the cutting edge is shockingly thin, but it is hard enough to resist deforming, while in use. Be attentive, when using the Kotobuki Seki knife, or it will surely ruin your day.

The blade is 5 cm wide (two inches) over most of its length, so it is very useful for scooping up and transferring chopped food to a bowl or pan. The wooden handle was a bit unfinished, initially, but I saturated it with food-grade mineral oil (used for treating chopping boards), allowed the oil to soak in (overnight), and then polished it with a piece of rough burlap cloth. The handle is now silky smooth.

I really enjoy using this Kotobuki Seki knife. It is a very effective cutting tool. It is also an attractive knife. I even find myself stepping into the kitchen, now and then, just to look at it. Of note, the versatility of its blade design allows the Kotobuki Seki knife to be used for cutting in both the rocking style and in the horizontal (sawing) style. You will like this knife. Please be aware that, as with any specialized tool, it should be washed only by hand.

I bought this knife as a stocking stuffer for my wife. She is Japanese and preferred to have Japanese style knife for preparing food, mostly veggies. We [mainly she] have used it dozens of times now and it works well. It has a nice balance and the blade is sharp thusfar....good value for the money.

I use it for my culinary classes and I sure got me a great knife and shofar haven't needed to use the steel on it nor the whetstone and still as sharp as I got it for the packaging and I don't have to worry about stabbing anyone with it, NO POINT!!! But still pro about it, don't see me swing it around like mad

We're really pleased. It's not fancy, and doesn't have the look of an expensive knife, but at this price it's great. VERY sharp, hollow ground on both sides, nice wood handle. Nice balance. A little bigger than we expected. Really quite a bargain.

J.A. Henckels 7-Slot Knife Storage Roll

J.A. Henckels 7-Slot Knife Storage RollI'm a professional cook and have to carry and keep my knives at work...It fits my 14" carver, honing steel, 10 serrated bread, and 8" chef's knife and carving fork well...but that already takes up 5 slots....I end up stacking my paring knife with my peeler, baller, zester, pens and thermometers together....

This is a good beginner knife case...a little expensive, but a placeholder until your ready to plunk down bigger bucks for a larger case.

A very practical and inexpensive way to carry your knives if you're a "cook on the go." 7 slots should be more than enough to carry your essential knives, sharpening steel and maybe tongs, a peeler and/or a zester it also has a slot to accomodate a cleaver. The Henckels Roll is a generous 19 inches long, which could, conceivably, allow you to carry even your Woodman's Pal. Remember, you'll still need to keep your knives protected with blade guards, otherwise you'll cut into the roll an extra expense which you need to take into account. Finally, I feel that, had they included a handle, it would have made for a superior product.

I bought this because i was looking for a less bulky bag to carry my knives in. This roll does the job nicely. Its really good quality, with leather outside, and nylon and elastic insides, there even a flap in one end to keep the knife at the very end form being exposed when rolled. Good product

The quality is good for what it is. The material is vinyl and stitched well. I needed the longest roll I could find because I have one very large chef's knife. This one fit it just barely. Other options would have not (in this price range).

What I don't like about it is that vinyl could have been more flexible, so that you could actually ROLL it. As it is, you can only fold it over twice to close it. It isn't bad, but rolling would make it tighter to hold the knives. That is what is it is supposed to be. You are supposed to roll it and tie it tight so the knives and held together tight and so they aren't loose to bounce around and are protected from damage against hitting something else or being dropped.

Also, because the velcro is really short, if you try to roll it tight, the velcro overshoots its target and you can't close it off. They should have either extended the velcro fuzzy side or used some other strap securing mechanism. This would have added a nickel to the cost I think.

Overall, if you need something to contain your knives and don't want to spend much for a really good one, this will do the job. But it isn't anything special. It does look clean and neat though.

I got this as a small knife roll to carry with me to working interview, as a light case for culinary school, and as a professional case for work. The case looks quite sleek. It has 7 pockets, (elastic topped, with mesh) one large enough for my to carry a pair of culinary scissors in, but most about standard knife handle size. It has a fold-over top and side flap (both made of canvas) to prevent things from accidentally sliding out, and the velcro straps are adjustable by several inches as well. I have carried it tightly rolled with just knives in it, as well as still being able to carry a wire whisk and 2 oz. ladle in it when I needed. It was well worth the $25 I got it for, figuring in professional appearance and practicality, especially when pricing it against most of the others I saw.

Kuchenprofi Parma Cheese Knife in 18/10 Stainless Steel

Kuchenprofi Parma Cheese Knife in 18/10 Stainless SteelI was skeptical about the idea of a special knife just for cheese, but now I'm sold. It really does make a big difference, both in the ease of the cut and the straightness. Only tiny shreds stick to the blade, and only at the top. The handle is comfortable to hold and the knife feels well-balanced.

I haven't yet used the prongs on the end for picking up bits of cheese, but they look cool, so what the heck.

This Kuchenprofi Parma Cheese Knife is absolutely incredible for slicing TOMATOES! Take a tomato, hold it in the palm of your hand and using this knife you can control the thickness -or the thinness of your slice. I'm thinking of ordering a second one for a back-up. Other knives tend to shred/tear the tomatoe -this doesn't.

This was my first experience with a cheese knife of this type, so I don't know if the problem I have with slicing is universal to this style of knife or not. When I cut a piece of cheese from a large block, like a 2 lb. size, the knife just will not cut a straight line. The blade is too flimsy to go straight. I'm back to cutting with my butcher knife.

Spatulas - Rosewood - Tapered Blade 8'I thought the BLADE itself would be 8" long, but the entire product is only 8 inches long! The blade is tiny! Dang. I might as well just use a table knife to do the icing. It's a nice spatula, but only really good for small projects in my eyes.

Messermeister Pro Touch Swivel Peeler

Messermeister Pro Touch Swivel PeelerNo more blanching! It is just amazing. I saw them using it on America's Test Kitchen and could not believe it. But it works. The only caveat is that if you're peeling 8 or 10, say for sauce, blanching is still quicker. And for everything else, the OXO peelers are still the best, especially the new "i" series swivel model. But for that "one tomato, peeled and seeded" recipes, this is it.

I purchased the Messermeister Pro-Touch Serrated Swivel Peeler because it was recommended by Cook's Illustrated magazine. As usual, the folks at CI were right. This peeler is super-sharp and cuts through produce peels almost effortlessly.

The blades on most vegetable peelers tend to get dull over time from a combination of normal wear from being used and from being knocked around with other prep tools and utensils .in a kitchen drawer. In the past, I bought slightly less expensive peelers and resigned myself to replacing them more frequently when the blades became dull. However, this Messermeister peeler is not that much more expensive than the OXO Good Grips peelers I had purchased previously (which are nice quality as well), and it comes with a plastic blade cover to protect the sharp edges during storage. This should keep the blades sharp much longer, making it a better value in the long run even though it costs a little more up front.

I used to throw my vegetable peelers in the dishwasher, but with this one I've been hand-washing it immediately after I use it (sometimes all it needs is a quick rinse), drying it and putting on the protective blade cover before returning it to the utensil drawer. So far, it has kept its razor-sharp edge and remains a joy to use.

I doubt I'll ever actually enjoy peeling fruits or vegetables, but this tool certainly helps me get the job done faster and more easily. What more can you ask from a vegetable peeler?

We read about this device, in a UK newspaper, and, as a 'senior person' with many years of struggling with various makes and designs of peelers, was impressed with the comments. so I imported two from Califonia via

a relative and have found it to be 'simply the best' it selfclears the peelings, is razor sharp and the serrations appear to

grip the item one is peeling. I have been waiting all my adult for just this kitchen tool. Well done the design engineers of Messermeister.
