Kuhn Rikon Colori Art Paring Knife with Straight Edge/Pink and Serrated Edge/Black Polka Dot, Set of 2These knives are awesome! So sharp! We bought 2 on the Internet and since have bought several more in the store.

These are my go-to knives when chopping veggies and fruit. Haven't had to sharpen them yet, after a few months of use. The colors are fun -makes food prep more like play than work.

Victorinox 11-Piece Knife Set with Block, Rosewood Handles

Victorinox 11-Piece Knife Set with Block, Rosewood HandlesWe are happy with this purchase. The knives are very light and very sharp. We are replacing a cheap set so this is a treat.

After doing a lot of research into knives, I found that many sites recommend the Victorinox Forschner knives. Taking that recommendation, I suggested that this rosewood set would make a nice Christmas gift. It turns out I was wrong. When opening the box, my first thought was, "someone is selling knock-off knives branded as Victorinox". One of the steak knives was in where the paring knife should go so I swapped them and noticed that because the slot for the small paring knife is so large, the knife tilts down out of line with all the other knives. I can see why maybe someone swapped the knives in the first place because the steak knife slots are too small and you can feel the serrations cutting into the wood just trying to insert them. Then once you do get the steak knives into their slots, they still stick out leaving about 1cm of the blade exposed. The angle of the wood handle is not in line with the angle of the block so on top of these other issues they make this set look like I got it for $20 at a garage sale. The 10" slicer had a gouge on it and the handle of the steel is a different shade from the rest of the knives.

I haven't bothered using them since they look so bad so I can't comment on the quality of the steel. I'm setting up a return ASAP. I've posted a few user images for this product as well to illustrate these issues. Maybe quality control just missed this one but if you're looking at these knives you might want to think twice. Maybe the ones with the Fibrox handles won't have all these problems.

72 PC GOLD TRIM FLATWARE SET

72 PC GOLD TRIM FLATWARE SETI have been looking everywhere for a gold trimmed silverware set to go with my formal dining set. I didn't want to spend too much because I only plan to use this set for special occasions. When they arrived (very quickly) I was impressed with both the quality and the size of the set. The serving set is huge! I can't imagine how much I would have spent if I had bought these pieces seperately. The pieces are heavier and sturdier than I expected. I also liked that the gold plating is subtle and not too brassy. I hope that it holds up well with washing.

As another reviewer may have mentioned, some people might have a problem with the size of the salad forks-they look like children's utensils. The forks don't really bother me and I think they would be great for appetizers.

Overall I think that this is a great set for the price.

I was very disappointed in the size disparity of the utensils. The salad forks and teaspoons are very small. There is one "sugar spoon" that is the size of an actual teaspoon. The tablespoons are too large for eating they are more like serving spoons. Also the gold is barely recognizable. The weight is light, but for the price is passable. Since this set is mass produced in China, its okay, but you get what you pay for.

This huge set is definitely a value for the money, and is somewhat heavier than I expected, that's a good thing! The salad forks are actually too small to use for salad, and more the size of an olive fork. Having all the serving pieces is a definite bonus. I was disappointed that the gold plating on the handles is only on the top of the pieces and not the back. But considering that it is a 72 pc. set of pretty stainless for a bargain price, I'm quite satisfied.

This set is so much sturdier than I was even dreaming of. Beautiful design. The case was much sturdier than I was expecting and it even comes with combination locks. The salad forks are smaller than most sets come with, but then I have never been a fan of the shape of traditional salad forks. For the price I paid for this set, I am totally pleased.

Kuhn Rikon Colori Art Chef's and Paring Knife, Blue Damask

Kuhn Rikon Colori Art Chef's and Paring Knife, Blue DamaskMy chef boyfriend was sick of using my crappy knives so he picked these up for my place. They are not professional knives but he was pleasantly surprised at how well they performed, and I was blown away. The quality is VERY good for the price. Very sharp, well made, and even pretty. I just added a ton of different Kuhn Rikon knives to my wishlist, I'll be updating my whole supply!

Chicago Cutlery Fusion 18-Piece Knife Set

ChicagoCutlery Fusion 18-Piece Set including Honey Maple Wood BlockI purchased these knives a couple of months ago after reading all kinds of knife set reviews from every site I could find. These are real nice and sharp! I especially like the santoku knives. They cut and chop tomatoes and onions awesomely. I wasn't too sure about the steak knives as they looked thin compared to the last set of steak knives I had, but after I used them they're are even better! As one reviewer said the larger knives do not line up when sitting in the knife block, but a small thing. They are still a really nice looking set. My son use to work as a chef in a large restaurant and he loved these knives. They are well made and I haven't experienced any rust. They sit in you hand perfectly. I do not put them in the dishwasher as I want them to last. If you want a nice set of knives without the high price, these are for you.

Well after searching and searching, reading review and reading reviews I decided on this set. I ordered them from at first and then found them cheaper $ shipped at so I canceled and ordered from them. Received the set and right away I knew I was going to love these knifes. Well balanced, well weighted, and feel great in hand. I was a little worried that the poly grip handles were going to be squishy but they are not at all. Just a very slight give and feels soft to the touch. I actually really like the poly grip handles. The steak knife handles are a little thin but still work great. The blades are nice and strong and sharp right out of the box. Spend a few seconds on each one with the included sharpening Steel and they just get shaper. There is only ONE thing that is somewhat bothering to me and most would laugh about this but when you place all the knifes in the storage block they don't line up perfect like the picture shows. After trying to rearrange the knifes you just can't get them to line up. This has nothing to do with the quality of the knifes and with me being extremely hard to please. This only bothered me for 5 minutes and I decided this set is WAY to nice especially for the price to let this bother me. They kind of make a rainbow shape when placed in the storage block so it looks ok. Like I said I am hard to please when it comes to quality of a product and this set pleases me. I have looked at many sets before purchasing this set and for only $129.95 I truly believe you will NOT find a better set. Maybe even for more money. I highly recommend you give them a try.

Can't really go wrong with this (made in China) set. For the price, that is.

These are heavy, well balanced, forged knives, blades made of rust-resistant, reasonably good quality high-carbon stainless steel. On the box it says that they are 'fusion forged' but I have no idea what that means. The specialized knives come with a black polymer, 'non slip' soft grip. The stake knives have stainless steel handles.

The Santoku and Partoku knives come with oval indents that are meant to allow food to release from the blade. All knives feature forged bolsters for better balance and to keep fingers from running up on the blade.

You get the following knives:

7.75" chef knife

7" Santoku (slice, dice, chop and mince)

8" Slicer

3.5" Parer

3" Peeler

7.75" Bread

5" Partoku (smaller than the Santoku, combines the convenience of a paring knife with the versatility of the Santoku)

5" Utility

4.25" Steak (8 of these)

And, of course, there is the sharpening tool.

While clearly not 'high end', and no one should expect 'chef' knives at this price, they appear to be durable. The block is solid, heavy wood and there is also a sharpener. And this set comes with some of the sharpest steak knives I've seen. The only issue I have but it's no big deal, really, is that the handles tend to be a little small.

Note:

Be aware that this set does not necessarily come with Omaha Stakes coupons. Mine didn't and I didn't expect one. I mention this because at least one review mentions an $80 coupon.

I have had this set of knives for over a year now and still love them. I use them several times each week for making meals and they have stayed quite sharp. It only takes a few seconds and a few swipes along the sharpening blade every time I pull a knife out of the block, and I can cut through a potato as easily as I can cut through butter. I too use the santoku knife more than the others as it is a great size and feels very well-balanced for slicing and chopping. Having previously used cheaper knives, I wanted to see if it really was worth the money to buy a set like this. I can say without a doubt that this has been an excellent investment and I highly reccommend this set of knives.

Want Chicago Cutlery Fusion 18-Piece Knife Set Discount?

The majority of the blades arrived in great condition. The Chef's knife, the 5" Santoku, and the paring knife all had notches in the blades and required me to sharpen with a whetstone before use. The knives feel good in my hands, and slide right through a full sized watermelon, hard veggies, or a steak with ease. Someone else likely would have returned the knives because of the notches, but I did not because I was able to get them out and get the blade into better condition than the manufacturer. The metal plate over the knife block should be of concern... if you are trying to put away a knife and accidentally stick it into the metal you could damage the knife. I do not feel as though these knives will last long, but for now as long as I maintain the cutting edge they should serve their purpose.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Gourmet 9-Piece High-Carbon Stainless-Steel Gourmet Steak Knives with B

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Gourmet 9-Piece High-Carbon Stainless-Steel Gourmet Steak Knives with BlockOne of the product pictures showed a close-up of the blade displaying it was "Made in Germany". The box it came with also stated "Made in Germany". ALL THESE ARE FALSE ADVERTISING !!! Each of the steak knifes were stamped "Made in Spain" :(

Buyers should be aware that the description of the knives on this site; as clearly depicted; does not necessarily mean that the knives that arrive may be made in(as in my experience Spain, Thailand or China. Even though the packaging indicates German made and instructions shows German made, the knives that arrived were Spanish made. The return policy may be alright for locals purchasers but adding half the cost of the product to return it from Australia is not cost effective. My concerns re the issue have not been responded to.

I bought these knives for my wife for Christmas. We bought them to complement our regular set of Professional S knives.

About the knives: The look of these was dead on with our current set. The finish of the handles could have been better. They feel a bit light and the handles just aren't as smooth as the Professional S set. That being said -they weren't nearly as expensive. I posted pictures of the end serrations on the blade. Not sure how this will effect sharpening them in the future.

About the block:

It was lighter in color than the other knife block we have. The stock photo is a very good representation of the color of the product we received. I would have been more pleased if it matched exactly.

Overall:

My wife is very happy with them. They cut well and look pretty good. I only ask for a bit better quality feel and a slightly different block color.

I bought a set of 4 of these knives about 7 years ago. I use them for all my slicing! I have small hands and they are very comfortable to use when cutting vegetables. They are just now showing signs of needing sharpening.. but they are used a few times everyday in my home. My next purchase will be a set with a block so they don't get bumped around in the silverware drawer.

J.A. Henckels Twin Pro-S 5-Piece Gift Set

J.A. Henckels Twin Pro-S 5-Piece Gift SetThe first time we used them, we cut the ribeyes with this set fresh off the grill and everyone commented how wonderful the knife felt in our hands. The balance of the knife as well as the ease of use and the quality of the incision made us feel like skilled surgeons. Lately, I grill steaks just to have an excuse to use them! The presentation case is impressive to guests and they serve as a safe place to preserve their edges, tips and overall beauty. I bought them on amazon.com and was very pleased with the product for the price paid. I will probably purchase a second set so that I have service for eight.

I like this set of knives. I got this set since it had the larger block which allows me to easily add additional knives easily. I've had them for over a year now and they are still as sharp as when i got them (haven't needed to sharpen yet).

My biggest gripe is the silly sticker on the knife handles. I have been carefully hand washing the knives and the sticker starts to get gummy and peeling off after about a month. Seems very tacky and low quality to put a sticker like this on a quality knife. I had to take off 1 whole star for this. But if this doesn't bother you as much as it does me then consider this a 5 star review :)

The blades are just great and well worth the price. The metal coated paper sticker used as a label on the handle is a disappointment while the instructions recommend hand washing and not using a dishwasher, sorry I'm going to use the dishwasher. However, the cheap label comes off eventually. The blades remain superb, however.

I suggest getting a companion Henckels or Wusthof manual sharpener (about $20); I haven't found anything better. My blades needed sharpening after a year of use 3-4 times a week, and 3 to 4 draws through each side of the sharpener did the trick, far better than the steel rod I had.

Needless to say, these knives are sharp and well balanced. My use has been only for a month, so I will reserve judgement on how long they remain that way. I do hone after each use, but so far, it has been a pleasure to use them. The only change I would have preferred is a 6" chef knife, rather than an 8" inch.

Oxo Softworks 7 Piece Stainless Steel Cutlery Set

Oxo Softworks 7 Piece Stainless Steel Cutlery SetI ordered this knife set for the teen cooking program at my public library after being fed up with dealing with dull cheap knives. I knew Oxo made good products, and already had a couple items. I decided to stop making do with cheap tools, and just order some Oxo knives. This set looked like it would fit the bill.

When it arrived, aside from the bonus of the worried reactions of my co-workers upon finding someone had sent a box of knives to the library, I was psyched. These knives, although most are labled, "mini" are full kitchen tools. I didn't want giant butcher knives for the teens to use, but am very happy to find these knives are are by no means "mini" either. The Chef's Knife & Bread Knife are each longer than my forearm (including handles), and the "mini" knives all have at least 4-inch blades. I am extremely pleased with the quality of this set, especially as it was only $25!

I have a wusthhof classic knife set [forged high quality knives $300]. i was looking for cheap carving set to complement the set and fill the empty slots in the block.

These ginsu knives are the perfect match. It is hard to tell the wusthof handles from these ginsu knives. The triple rivels and handle color and design are right on.

Although blades are not made of forged hi carbon steel[ it's stainless steel], the knife the and fork are able to dissect the occasional turkey/roast.

Oneida Satin Dover 20-Piece Stainless Flatware Set , Service for 4

Oneida Satin Dover 20-Piece Stainless Flatware Set , Service for 4I bought my original Oneida Dover satin flatware a few years ago. I wanted something pretty but not as demanding as sterling silver. I only use it a few times a year. I needed some additional place settings for Thanksgiving, so I ordered them online. After receiving them, I noticed that the raised floral design on some pieces was inconsistent. For instance, what was supposed to be a flower was just a flattened disk. And in fact, when comparing the old flatware with the new set, which was made in Viet Nam, it is obvious the patterns are not exactly the same. The "Easy Care Tips" that came in the box said to avoid detergents containing lemon, avoid prolonged contact with acidic foods, wash the flatware separately from aluminum, sterling or silverplate, never let your flatware soak, even in plain water, do not store in plastic, wash and dry immediately after use, etc. All and all, it seems to be every bit as demanding as sterling silver, if not more so. Every time I use this flatware, I will have to jump up from dinner to wash and dry it to avoid pitting, corroding, or discoloration. I would rather be able to spend a little time socializing with my company, and wash dishes after they leave. I purchased Oneida because I still have a set that my mother gave us around 30 years ago, and you don't have to baby it like this.

I registered for Oneida Dover 7 years ago when I became engaged. I bought it because it looked similar to the pattern my mother had.

When I got my first place setting in person, I was a tiny bit disappointed that it wasn't exactly the same as the ones my mother had. I put it back in the box, planning to think over whether to exchange them for a different pattern. They ended up sitting in a cabinet... for 7 years.

Just a few weeks ago, I pulled them out again... and was absolutely delighted with them. They are the perfect weight and feel in your hands. They are delicate and beautiful, but not *too* frilly/girly/ornate (or my husband might protest!). Just pulling a spoon or fork out of the drawer is a thrill... they are little works of art. They really are the perfect flatware that will become a family heirloom... how many family heirlooms do you have the joy of using several times a day? I've now purchased more place settings to complete the set. My only regret is that these sat unused and hidden away for 7 years... I could have been enjoying these every day all that time!

Over the years, I have added many pieces and purchased several extra place settings. They all match and look wonderful. I would highly recommend this for many years.

LamsonSharp 3" x 5" Turner

LamsonSharp 3' x 5' TurnerGood points:

* Flexible blade does indeed slide under things.

* Useful size for eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches.

* Dishwasher-safe-ish.

Bad points:

* Handle is made of a plastic that melts at surprisingly low temperatures--the side of a frying pan even at moderately low heat.

* Handle is riveted to blade quite loosely--there is play when the handle flexes. It feels like something is shaking loose, even though this is functionally irrelevant.

* Blade is cheaply made--it is not smooth, but slightly pitted, at the business end.

Excellent turner, good size and flexibility. The only drawback is the material that the handle is made of. It will not sustain heat at all, so if it gets against the rim of a skillet or griddle it will melt promptly.

Buy LamsonSharp 3" x 5" Turner Now

I live in a rural area and I couldn't find a decent turner in a store within a hundred miles, literally! All thick enough plastic to challenge a wheelchair from crossing, or silicone discs on handles. I went clear to another state to find a well-made turner the right size and made of real steel to no avail.

This turner is everything it should be durable but flexible, thin bladed to avoid injuring eggs, big enough for omelettes and burgers, rust-free, and a pure delight. It was a gift for my chef-esque husband and I had to buy several more in two sizes to make him even happier.

I am surprised to see there are very few reviews of this item, especially because I consider this item to be one of my favorite tools in the kitchen. My husband and I both love to cook, and even a year later, we still constantly rave about how perfect this Lamson Turner is. I love items that are engineered with thoughtfulness, precision, and perfection, and this turner is one of them. The sharp edge is absolutely perfect for flipping eggs (my easy over eggs are now PERFECT!). I love the precise feeling you have when scooping from under the egg, to find that not one bit has stuck to the pan. The sharp edge is perfect for getting under the thinnest items --crepes, eggs, etc., ensuring, a perfect flip every time. It's also great for scrambled eggs, as you can use the sharp edge to chop up the eggs as thick or as small as you desire. We used this for fried rice in the wok, pancakes, fish, etc. The 3x5 size is perfect for cooking in a fry pan from 8" to 12", or even a wok, and the handle is the perfect length to ensure full control over flipping. We use a knife sharpener to keep the edge finely pointed and it works fantastically.

Want LamsonSharp 3" x 5" Turner Discount?

I wanted a slightly larger than average turner for omelets, grilled cheese sandwiches (which I make on larger slices of bread) and my pancakes which I prefer much larger than the traditional "silver dollar" size. That is the only use I put this turner to, and it does quite well. The blade gets under the food fine, and has enough flex.

I was fortunate enough not to have the issue with a loose handle that others had. The plastic does indeed look and feel cheap, so I knew going in that I would hand-wash it, and never leave it leaning against a hot surface good habits to start early with, so you don't fall into the mentality (so common amongst American consumers) of "everything ought to be fool-proof, therefore I am going to treat my property like a fool, and then complain when things break."

I wouldn't use this turner for burgers or on the grill. It doesn't seem appropriate for anything heavy, and I wouldn't press down on it either (you're not supposed to press down on burgers anyway).

This turner is holding up fine under the duties I have assigned, and I see no reason why it won't last a long time with proper care.

All in all it's a fine product, I am satisfied, but considering the apparent cheapness of the build, it out to be a few dollars less $9.99 for instance.

November 2011 update: The handle has indeed become loose, and it feels even cheaper as a result, but ti still works fine.

OXO Good Grips 22281 5 1/2-Inch Veggie Knife

OXO Good Grips 22281 5 1/2-Inch Veggie KnifeI bought this knife years ago, and it still stays sharp. I love it because I have small hands for an adult, and I don't feel as safe using a large knife, and this one works great for me. I LOVE Oxo products and own many!! Would make a wonder gift too, especially for someone who has problems with their hands, as their handles do make a person feel safer when using the item, and they feel very comfortable in the hand, especially important when using a knife!! They last too, and I still use this knife for many, many items, and it is still sharp, years later!!

Miyabi Kaizen 9 1/2-Inch Chef's Knife

Miyabi Kaizen 9 1/2-Inch Chef's KnifeIMHO a great knife must balance well in your hand above all else, then have a blade that can take, hold and renew a good edge. If the balance is wrong, the blade will suffer as you manipulate it. A good balance in your hand means fewer trips to the steel and to my local pro sharpener. Stretched, my hand is exactly nine inches from thumbnail to the end of my pinky, and as a man of regular height and modest strength, the balance was perfect for me. Way better than the Forschner, F.Dick, Global, and Shun 10" knives in my collection. It has a smaller, rounder but longer handle than most, perhaps the source of the balance. The angle to the tip makes it better for slicing into product rather than rocking back on it (more like a Sabatier than an F.Dick or a Henckles). The blade was as sharp out of the box as anything I have ever bought, and my local pro is certified to keep it that way. I particularly like the finish of the top of the blade, which is rounded rather than squared off, since I keep my thumb and forefinger on the blade itself. I can just imagine the callous at the base of my forefinger dissolving into nothing! Miyabi has a bunch of other models out there, and the blades all seem terrific. But the balance on them varies. If you order one, run through a bag of carrots before you decide if it feels right. If not, send it back and try another.

Mcgowan Diamondstone 2-Stage Knife Sharpener

Mcgowan Diamondstone 2-Stage Knife SharpenerAt first this item would seem to be an ideal product. I own both models. I picked up the diamond model because the diamond grit promised a surface that would surely handle the tougher steels. And it did. But then comes the reason I would not recommend this particular tool. The company, apparently to save a dime in production and make a dollar in sales, opted to only put one stone on both sides of the white ceramic hone. Since the tool was designed to fit two stones one gets chatter when honing. Might not seem like much of a problem but when one is trying to get the ultimate edge this drives me nuts. The cheaper model works great for a quick sharpening of kitchen knives that have lost a bit of edge.

This is the best knife sharpener I have ever used, and that includes electric sharpeners. The large handel gives stability and safety while the wheels form an ever changing abrasive surface. This is the second of these sharpeners that I have purchased.

Shun Electric Knife Sharpener.

Shun Electric Knife Sharpener. This is the best knife sharpener I have ever used to put a new edge on a dull blade with out chewing up the blade and putting scratches all over an expensive forged knife(like a Chef's Choice knife sharpener does and doesn't produce the result like this one). And is it so easy to use! Only about four passes through and you have a new edge on a dull knife. I really can't recommend this product enough.

Honing steel only works for so long and professional knife stores often get confused when you ask them about working on a 16 deg angle edge.

So for those reasons getting a sharpener that could do the job was a must. I've used it on my knives (also Shun) and the results were everything I could have asked for.

I did have some issues running the utility knife through Shun Classic 3-1/2-Inch Paring Knife, mostly because of the short blade. But when using my santoku Shun Classic 7-Inch Santoku Knife it worked like a charm and the results on both were fantastic.

As for the unit itself, it is quite solid because of the motor, and includes a compartment for keeping the power cord tucked neatly away. I did have some trouble with the power button. It had to be pressed farther than I would have expected and the detent felt off to me.

The grinding wheels seem to be ceramic and the grinding assembly is easily removed. I would assume that would be for either cleaning or if the grinding wheels need to be replaced.

It is a bit on the expensive side, but I'm sure that it will more than pay for itself in sharp knives.

I have only used this on shun classic knives. While it does sharpen a dull knife, it does not do nearly as good of a job as having your knives professionally sharpened. I also fear it takes off much more metal than is necessary to achieve a new edge. Buy this only if you are exceedingly lazy about getting your knives sharpened and it won't happen any other way. Otherwise get your knives sharpened professionally. Shun will sharpen them for free if you don't mind shipping them to Japan (rolls eyes). I get mine done at Sur La Table; they charge an arm and a leg, but they specialize in Shun knives and do a great job.

I'm a Shun fan. Love their knives, but their knife sharpener isn't up to this company's usual quality standards. It's useless on short blades like the paring knife and can easily put nicks in the blade -regardless of length. Not what you want for these instruments. And if you're expecting "factory sharp", forget it.

I was looking for a sharpener specifically for Japanese knives (I have 5 Shun knives). I could not believe how horrible this sharpener is. I really thought it might have damaged my knives. It is unbelievably course and it chatters very badly while sharpening. Do not even consider this product. Back to the waterstones for me!!
