Shun Pro 2 Series 6 in. Yanagiba Steak Knife VGE0150ST

Shun Pro 2 Series 6 in. Yanagiba Steak Knife VGE0150STThis is for sushi/sashimi, not steak as described by some!!!!!!

I have half a dozen Shun knives in the Stainless Series which are beautiful and functional on their own with their 16 degree cutting angle.

I've been making sushi/sashimi and rolls for 15 years. Finally took a short course to improve the aesthetics of my finished product and my wife treated me to this Pro 2 Series knife to encourage me.

First of all, compared to the larger ones in the Pro 2 Series, this is affordable. It is truly a beautiful knife as far as finish and functionality.

The sharp cutting angle and one sided bevel cut really do make all the difference in the world as far as how sashimi and sushi look in the end.

I found that I did need the 8.26" version as well but had to settle for the Pro rather than the Pro 2 Series due to cost.

If you really get in to sushi/sashimi preparation, treat yourself to one of them as well as the Pro 8.26 inch to cover all of your bases (depends on how large an item you are slicing).

If you want to stare at a knife, the Pro 2 is truly a wondrous work of art.

P.S. Don't be nice and loan it to anyone. I wouldn't.

Wish I could frame this one!

WMF Carlton 45-Piece Flatware Placesetting, Service for Eight

WMF Carlton 45-Piece Flatware Placesetting, Service for EightNeeded a new set of every day flatware. The existing 18/0 Oneida flatware (not the Community series----this was the casual, every day line) was looking beat up after twenty years.

The finish on this new WMF set is beautiful, and they come out of the dishwasher sparkling clean---something that did not happen with the every day Oneida set (a higher end Oneida 18/10 "Community" set--very formal "best flatware" pattern--does come out nice and clean as well). The dishwasher is a mid-range Bosch, not a dishwasher that is failing or on its last legs. And yes, it uses Finish tabs and Jet-Dry. The message here is that 18/8 or 18/10 flatware is worth the extra money, and more carefree to maintain if you use a dishwasher. With 18/0, one was constantly rubbing out spots or scouring the utensil AFTER it emerged from the dishwasher.

Bear in mind that this pattern is designed by Hepp and sold under the WMF label in the USA. WMF and Hepp are under the same ownership. In Germany, you would buy Carlton with a Hepp label. If you go to WMF's USA website, you will see a menu tab for Hepp, and in their flatware line you will find Carlton. It is very popular for restaurants (Hepp's specialty is restaurant supply), which speaks of its durability. Pieces feel very nice in the hand. Tablespoon probably a bit too large for a woman's mouth, about right for an average size man. The tablespoons seem to be "bistro size", not surprising since Hepp is a major restaurant supplier. There are other WMF patterns with smaller spoons if this is an issue.

WMF's 18/10 Cromargan line is a notch or two below their top of the line Cromargan Protect line---Cromargan-Protect sets sell for $500-1000, and are what people in Germany use for their "best flatware", if they can afford it. It almost never goes on sale or special offer. Note that in Germany, flatware is sold in sets of six or twelve place settings, unlike US marketing tradition that sells "service for four" or "service for eight" (and if you want twelve settings, you buy one of each set). Their products for the US market are sold as per US tradition, either a 20 piece set or a 45 piece set. It's too bad the German pattern isn't seen here, because four place settings can be a little sparse except for a couple or single person, whereas six settings would cover most family dinners or a couple or single person inviting 3-4 guests to dinner.

For everyday use, however, the value of these 18/10 Cromargan (non-Protect) sets is hard to beat. They aren't made in Germany any more, but are supposedly designed by and manufactured to WMF's traditionally high standards. The WMF website sells open stock serving pieces (e.g. an extra serving spoon or serving fork) for very reasonable prices, about $4 each at present.

I ordered this thinking it was the same pattern I had a few pieces of. It wasn't but I Like it better. The pieces are bigger than I expected, but are beautifu, well balanced and a joy to use. So far it is holding up well to frequent use and dishwashings.

Messermeister 4" Parer Edge-Guard

Messermeister 4' Parer Edge-GuardThese edge guards are a great, cheap way to protect the edge on a good paring knife. I wouldn't store my global knife without one.

I used this for a forschner/victorinox 4" pairing knife. It does not work very well for this product. The forschner doesn't have a bolster. Because of that, it leaves around a quarter inch of the blade exposed when the cover is on. I ended up cutting the guard to fit the contour of my pairing knife and now it completely covers the blade. It works as well as any other generic edge guard. If you used this on a Henkles or Whustof knife, I'm sure it would work without having to modify it.

Buy Messermeister 4" Parer Edge-Guard Now

This is a piece of plastic that will tightly cover the business end of your knife and prevent you from reaching into a drawer and slicing your hand open...what more can I say about it? It does what it's supposed to do. I think all of these knife guards are over priced for what they are. Buy a set of them if you want to save a few dollars.

Read Best Reviews of Messermeister 4" Parer Edge-Guard Here

Made of a hard, thick plastic these covers slip over the blade of a knife and pinch it's spine in order to stay on. If you're just using these to store your knives in a drawer I'd say it's just fine. For traveling it'll probably work just as well as long as the knives are wrapped in something. You see, the guards can slip off somewhat if they're moved too much (say, if I hold the handle and swing the blade a little). They are other edge guards that clasp shut and don't really have this problem, but that doesn't keep me from recommending this product especially given the price.

Every time I purchase a new professional knife, I purchase one of these to cover the blade so I can put it in my drawer and not worry about the blade being damaged or me being cut. Highly recommend.

J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread Knife

J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread KnifePlease note that I have several Henckel knives that I really like, so this is definitely not a anti-Henckel biased review.

There is really only one problem with this knife the blade is way too thick. If there's only one problem then why do I give it only one star? Well, this one problem completely ruins this knife. The 'eversharp' name I'm sure refers to the fact that the serrations are not the standard "wave pattern" you'd see on most bread knives. Instead, each serration has several smaller serrations and spikes built in. I know that this is supposed to ensure that the knife will never end up dull but in the process it makes it horrible at doing any kind of delicate cutting. Plus, the blade is not flexible in any way due to the extreme thickness. Unless you are cutting the sturdiest bread out there, you'll crush it while trying to slice with this blade. Forget about cutting any kind of soft bread or pastry. I've found that some of our cheap steak knives work far better than this knife.

I've come to the conclusion that this knife is horrible after comparing it to two other bread knives I now own. The first was a Paderno (small Canadian company) that we got for our wedding, and the second was a Global bought from Amazon. Both are considerably more expensive than this knife, but there are other, more economical options out there that are still far better. You want to find a nice, thin blade with even and sharp serrations. If you're looking to stay in this price range, you won't find anything forged these will all be stamped or laser cut but that's fine the bread knife doesn't need to be strong like your chef's knife.

Pros:

-Cheap

Cons:

-Mashes your bread while it cuts

-Hard to get started through crusts due to blade thickness

-The 'spiky' serrations are dangerous to your fingers (think many tiny needles along the blade) they tend to nick you easily but they are useless for their intended purpose of cutting bread.

Suggestion: Steer clear. If you can afford it, get a Global (or even a better Henckel). Otherwise, look for a the thin stamped blade.

This bread knife gets the job done in record time with very little hand/wrist effort. Very little pressure on the knife was needed in order to slice through a loaf of very crusty bread from the bakery. In fact, my hand and wrist felt great after slicing the entire loaf into small pieces for appetizers, and the knife created very few crumbs.

Buy J.A. Henckels International Eversharp Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread Knife Now

This is definitely the sturdiest, sharpest bread knife I've ever owned. The blade is completely rigid, no bending ever. The blade is super sharp, easily cutting through bread or whatever else I put it up against. Makes me wonder how I went so long with my old bread knife.

HAd one of these several years ago, but gave it to a visiting friend because they liked it so much. Bought several other brands since then. none of them as good. Finally tracked down this one again and it is as great as the first one!!!!

I got tired of cutting my Italian bread loaves with our steak knives and having crumbs all over the cutting board. So I got this bread knife as a gift from my husband. We couldn't wait to use it.

Well we were so disappointed. The blade is very thick and the edges of the knife don't cut easily. We use it on Italian loaves as I mentioned, and you have to push down even harder than we used to with the bread knives, thereby smashing the loaf. And the cutting edge leaves tons of crumbs which means it's not cutting smoothly through the crust.

I would prefer a finer serated edge to cut easier through the Italian bread.

a Chef knive, a bread knife, a carving knife set,

and others for many, many years. I had never sent

any of them in for their free sharpening service.

The Chef knife finally got a chip on the tip, and

the special cutting edge of the steak knives was

wearing down, so I decided that it was time to

send these knives in for "repair" and sharpening.

I did have to pay shipping to send the knives there,

and $8.00 to have knives shipped back. To my delight,

Cutco decided the knives were worn enough to be replaced

with brand new knives. This was a total of 9 knives that

were replaced. Cutco truly does stand by their product for

life.

I have other family members who have owned Henckels knives,

but Henckels didn't have the special edge that Cutco has on their

steak knives and many others. My family now owns Cutco, and can't

imagine having anything else. We are sold on Cutco!

Shun DM0760 Classic Asian Chef's Knife, 7-Inch

Shun DM0760 Classic Asian Chef's Knife, 7-InchI have a few other good knives in the kitchen. However, when I want precision and guaranteed cutting to any thinness, I choose this knife. It's weird, but because of the price and the VERY sharp edge, I feel...different...in my food preparation when I use the knife. I think, "Whoa, you lucky onion!" I'm not kidding (weird, I know). But it's so precise; I know that whatever I set out to do to my vegetables, etc., it WILL be done the way I want, and with ease. It's like doing surgery or using Photoshop and zooming way in to do professional, detailed work.

I have a dry rag nearby and I just quickly rise and wipe (since they don't recommend you put it in a dishwasher).

The 7" is great for me since I already have a heavy, 8" chef knife, a santoku, etc.

And the FIRST thing that I noticed upon picking it up was the LIGHT weight of it. Other people say the say thing. I don't miss the typical, heavy weight of most knives (that I do have). It's like a scalpel...and the sharpness, I guess, takes the place of the need for the heaviness of many other knives.

I do love it. Buy it. And it's very pretty, too (the wavy pattern of the metal as well as the wooden handle).

This knife is fantastic. Not much to say other than it is incredibly sharp and it looks great too. Definitely recommend this knife.

Recently purchased this knife at a local store while it was on sale and I LOVE it so far. I wasn't even planing on buying a new chefs knife but I was easily talked into it because of its beauty and affordable price. I am a wok chef and I have always loved anything Oriental, and this knife is just gorgeous! Very sharp and it makes my prep work a lot easier. After purchasing, I found out one of my coworkers has this same knife and he's been using it for 10 years! His is only slightly faded and it's still very sharp, minus a chip from him abusing it. He said he had a full set of Shuns that he keeps at home and he would recommend the brand to any chef. I plan on buying more from this brand in the future. I would recommend to any working chef or home cook who doesn't mind spending the money on superior quality knives.

I am a man of many knives, and this is the sharpest one I've ever owned. The blade is beautiful, extremely sharp and holds an edge very well. The handle is equally pleasing to look at and well suited to it's purpose.

Overall the knife is lightweight, well balanced and the blade shape is excellent for a number of cutting and chopping tasks. I have a block full of German knives and I go straight to this one when I need to cut anything, it's that good.

Do yourself a favor and buy one of these, you won't regret it.

Finish is very nice, no problems with the finish or quality. I was pleased to add it to my Heirloom that needs a few extra pieces. It is acceptable in all ways, but I wish they still made the 'old' Heirloom Damask Rose. :(

These are well made flatware pieces however, they lack the black antiqueing on the handle and are a mirrow image of the orignials. We decided to keep them as they blend in with our old set of Damask Rose flatware.

Present Time Ceramic Black and White Terrier Salt and Pepper Set

Present Time Ceramic Black and White Terrier Salt and Pepper SetI love these ridiculous little shakers. The only caveat is that they both dispense A LOT very quickly. If you're a salt addict like I am, it's perfect. If you prefer to use your salt and pepper sparingly, you might want to look for a different product.

Also, if you fill the shakers to the brim, they have a tendency to leak from the nose after you've used them once. Solve this problem either by not filling them up all the way, or being sure to shake all the salt towards the dog's butt before you set it back down.

Like I said, I love them and I use them all the time. They're great little novelty shakers and they decorate the table nicely. One final fact that you can't really tell from the picture: the white dog has one hole in his nose for dispensing, and the black dog has three.

Happy salting!

Perfect for the serious and casual collector ! They are the perfect size. Finally some daily use items that can be considered art.

I didn't realize the holes for the salt and pepper to come out of these was at the tip of it's snout, so the salt and pepper comes out extremely fast. If you fill these too full, the contents will spill out while they're sitting. Still, they're an adorable addition to my kitchen.

I got this as a holiday gift for my mother, who suffers from debilitating arthritis in her hands. She has recently began to have problems with cutting meat, and was about to resort to plugging our electric knife in at the dining table to cut her steaks. This knife is small, but it has a pretty powerful motor! Zyliss Stainless-Steel Cake Server with Detachable Blade

Zyliss Stainless-Steel Cake Server with Detachable BladeI first saw this at a grocery store selling for $18. I thought it was crazy spending that much for a cake server, but when i saw this for $10 on Amazon, I thought it would be perfect to try with all the holiday desserts that I planned to make. My main desire for this product was to allow me to serve a piece of pie or cake without having to either put my finger on the food, flip the food on its side, or having to serve with a server in one hand a knife in the other. Product works like a dream. I was able to serve using this simple tool which allowed me to dispense cakes and pies on plates without having to touch their food or ruin the appearance of what I was serving. The edge of the metallic blade is perfect for breaking the pie crust. The plastic piece that slides out is made from a durable plastic so it does not feel cheap nor is it difficult to slide.

My main concern of this product was cleaning it. With the sliding plastic blade, I was concerned that crust or pieces of food could easily get trapped within the moving parts. After washing this a few times, I have to say that is no longer a concern. It cleans very easily without trapping any food.

the black blade didn't fit the main server well. the quality should be expected higher with that price.

The wide tails offer added control and the various sizes of each piece are perfectly scaled and matched. I'm adding the 3-piece server set, appetizer forks, butter knives and dessert spoons. The spoon "bowels" have longer lengths that help prevent spillage compared to rounder spoons. The dinner fork is smaller than my other set and feels more like a precise instrument. The salad fork about the same size as most. The knives cut easily with serrated tips.

My 15 y/o service for 8 was a exceptionally good deal, yet, experienced some tough permanent moves during military service. My older set is the new outdoor "Going Anywhere" flatware set and the Gone Fishin' set is strictly reserved for transfer from the flatware drawer to the dining table. SIngle replacement pieces are easy to buy, too.

A bit expensive, but, considering how often flatware is personally seen and used at home, the price of one good car payment is well worth a full high-end set of beautiful, yet, very unique kitchen flatware. Guests remember this set. Wusthof Classic steak knives look very nice with Going Fishin', too. The copycat set on Amazon looks good on closer inspection, the Kawazaki artistic look won out bit, and the reviews said the knives were not very sharp. They're likely a very good set for a young family with kids or adding a steak knife for adults.

Victorinox Cutlery Edge-Mag 12-1/2-Inch Magnetic Knife Blade Protector, Set of 3

Victorinox Cutlery Edge-Mag 12-1/2-Inch Magnetic Knife Blade Protector, Set of 3I've had clip on and slide on protectors for my ten knives which, as a personal chef, I travel with on a daily basis. All have come loose at some time or another occasionally leaving my knives close to causing harm when my bag was opened, or worse, edge to edge contact leaving my knives damaged.

This isn't even possible with these magnetic sheaths'. Simply pry them open, lay the cutting edge into the fold and close them. No amount of swinging or dropping will make these protectors come off the blades. Since the cutting edge never contacts anything harder than itself, your blade will be as sharp as it was when you put it away. The white color is perfect for using a sharpie to label or write your name on them and stay visible.

The single drawback, and this didn't warrant a lower star rating, is that if food is still on your blade (my fault), and the blade is stored long enough for the food to dry, it may cause the magnets to stick to one another and when you pry them opoen for the next use, the surface may cling together and cause the magnetic surface to tear.

If you spend good money on your blades, as I have, it makes sense to use the best protector you can. This is the best!

I use one of these for my slicing knife: Victorinox 12-Inch Granton Edge Slicing Knife with Fibrox Handle. The knife is much too long for my knife block, and much too sharp to have loose in a kitchen drawer. These protectors firmly cover the knife blade, and are deep enough that they don't touch the cutting surface. I would definitely purchase them again.

Victorinox is one of my favorite brands in knives... They also make knife protectors... But... This one has been returned... As a chef who lugs his knives around, my knife bag becomes heavy enough for all my tools... Adding three of these, made it feel heavier!!!... But, and it's a big BUT, it protects your knives. Keeps your knives in place and won't move around. It won't get loosen unlike the other edge protectors... It's good if you are not carrying your knives around.

It's 'fully' priced at 50 cents per inch

The weight of the product broke through the packaging during shipping.

It costs about as much as the poly knife safes but does not provide storage that is as secure.

The white plastic covering is very thin, delicate and prone to marring.

Magnetic debri from the manufacturing process was a chore to clean up.

Saw it advertised as being made in Switzerland but packaging indicates made in USA.

While more compact than the poly knife safes it can add quite a bit of weight to the knife storage drawer.

Expected better from Forschner Victorinox.

$6 is a lot of tin to cover a $30 bread knife

Victorinox Swiss Classic 6-Piece Steak Knife Set, 4-1/2-Inch Serrated Blades with Round TipThese knives are nice everyday knives. They are fairly lightweight but not flimsy. They are sharp -but not so sharp they are scary as some of the reviews mention. The rounded tip enhances the sense of safety with the knives. It's great to be able to put them in the dishwasher.

Yes, these make great steak knives. Certain cultures prefer rounded tips on table knives as a matter of courtesy. Most won't ever think about this, but it's a nice gesture if your guests are picky about such things.

A simple detail that most manufacturers overlook is which side to put the serrations on. Having serrations on the wrong side can cause your steak knife to bind or leave jagged cuts in your food. Eating should be a pleasure, and struggling with your food is scarcely conducive to that. Thankfully, these knives have the serrations on the right hand side (which is the correct side if you're right handed. This will cause the smaller portion to fall away from the larger portion, rather than having the knife bind in your food. A small detail, but one that is easily overlooked.

Yes, these are great on the table, but they're also really quite handy in the kitchen. I find that I reach for these far more often than I would have anticipated. They're perfect for slicing a bagel/baguette, carving a cornish hen, butterflying/pocketing a fillet, and any other number of assorted tasks that you don't necessarily want a larger knife for.

The only failing of this knife is that it makes a terrible paring knife. This can scarcely be counted against it since this knife was never intended to be a paring knife. Nonetheless, several comments have mentioned using it as a paring knife, and I must disagree. The very same serrations that make perfect sense on the dinner table make no sense at all on the kitchen counter. The serrations are then on the wrong side (if you're paring towards yourself) and cause the knife to slip off of the food. If you're right handed, these serrations are great for cutting away from yourself, and terrible for cutting towards yourself.

I have had an identical set for some years now, and though a trifle flimsy, I have not noticed any wear and tear in the handles at all. I only bought another set because they were available at such an excellent price. I feel very confident that I will be using my original set for years to come. And should they ever become lost (which is a much greater danger than them ever wearing out), I will have replacements waiting.

There appear to be several identical sets on Amazon.com right now at different prices. I am unclear if there is any difference, but it would behoove you to search for every version of this set.

I. Was surprised and disappointed as the knife seemed very flimsy and had very little weight to it.

The blade was very sharp, which is a good thing.I thought my quest for a round tip steak knife was over but I am still looking.
