Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set

Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife SetThere are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife and a 6 inch sandwich knife.

The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic line, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 5 and 6 inch are a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.

As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.

I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich knife. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. This knife is just the wrong width and length for most tasks.

This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife, the 4 ½ inch utility knife, and the 9 inch bread knife. Judge for yourself.

Wusthof makes the best knife blades in the business, and in my opinion the best quality knives. Cheaper knives generally dull more quickly, and some never get truly sharp at all. Wusthof knives, in contrast, get clean, exact cuts every time, and are a joy to use.

The "Wusthof Classic" style of this set, with the three rivets attaching the black composite handle pieces to the full length tang of the blade, used to be the only style of handle Wusthof made. Wusthof now makes several other styles, including the slightly less expensive "Grand Prix" line with a molded handle, and the much more expensive "Culinar" line with stainless steel handles. If you have money to burn, you might want to look at the Culinar line, but for most people, the Wusthof Classic knives are likely the best tradeoff between money and quality.

The three knives in this set are the ideal knives for a brand new cook with no existing kitchen equipment. The chef's knife and the paring knife are needed in any well equipped kitchen; the "sandwich knife" is a compromise that can substitute, albeit imperfectly, for any of three or four other special purpose knives.

Amazon currently lists the Wusthof classic chef's knife in six different sizes; the 8" blade size is one of the sizes I own, and it works well for almost any cutting task in the kitchen. There are times when it feels like a larger size might work even better, such as when dealing with a large roast or turkey, but the 8" always seems to be sufficient in the end; there really aren't any times when I want a smaller chef's knife for general purpose use.

Paring for example, peeling potatoes is more of a special purpose task, for which a specialized knife is really superior. The 3.5" blade length in this set may seem short, but it's short for a reason. Often while one is using the paring knife in one hand, one is holding the object being cut in the other. The short blade length makes it easier to avoid stabbing oneself while maneuvering both the knife and the object.

The 6" knife is a little different. Unlike the other two knives in this set, the 6" knife is really only perfect for a very limited set of tasks. Its strength is that it can substitute, if a bit imperfectly, for a variety of other knives that may be missing from the kitchen of a brand new cook. For example, it can be used for utility tasks that require more than the 3.5" blade length of the paring knife which is to say, most utility tasks if the cook doesn't already have a 4" or 4.5" utility knife. It can also be used, in a pinch, when what the cook really wants is a second chef's knife for example, to cut fresh vegetables for a salad when it wouldn't be hygienic to reuse the big chef's knife that was just used on raw meat. The 6" knife won't be perfect for these tasks, but it will work, and will be much better than no knife at all.

As the new cook collects more knives, the 6" knife will likely be used less and less. It won't ever become completely unused I just used mine this evening, despite having half a dozen other Wusthof knives to choose from, because the 6" length is perfect for slicing a tenderloin roast but eventually it will become one of the lesser used pieces in the set.

That may make the 6" knife less than cost effective for a cook that already has an established set of kitchen tools. For such a cook, one of the other sets might be better perhaps the two piece "starter" set with the chef's knife and the paring knife, along with perhaps a Wusthof sharpening steel. For a brand new cook with no kitchen equipment, though, this three piece set is close to perfect, and it is the set I started my Wusthof collection with, 20 years ago.

I loved these knives right out of the box. They came sharp and feel great. I was finally moving out of the parent's house and needed some knives. With the free block and steel from Amazon you can't go wrong. I looked at all the sets for weeks and in the end decided that I would rather just buy what I needed, instead of settling for what came in the sets. I have found that I am rarely happy with prepackaged sets of anything. Therefore, this was a good starting point to which I added a bread knife and plan to add pieces if I need them (I doubt I will, but I may just fill the block :). I bought these sight unseen from Amazon and could not be happier.

Update! June 2011 and still going strong! Daily use, occasional sharpening, wow.

I got so tired of dull knives, I took the plunge and got Wustof. I was surprised how often I use the paring knife. These knives are perfectly balanced, and made with the best construction. The blades are chromium/molybdenum steel, probably the best knife steel available.

I trusted this tried and true brand, and it paid off. These knives stay sharp. They feel like a natural extension of the hand. They're beautifully finished. I was so excited to use them. I took 16 random poor quality knives to the church thrift shop. As it turns out, these three knives are all I need for cooking.

These are lifetime investments. I wish I hadn't have been so cheap for so long.

If I could, I'd give this product 10 stars, or even 20. I bought these knives for my boyfriend for his birthday, we are both in college and have recently gotten very involved in cooking. We did much research and found these to be the best cooking knives (we watch Food Network and virtually everyone uses these knives) and, we were definitely impressed. They are nothing short of amazing! They cut through everything like butter, it makes cooking such a breeze, they are easy to handle, and I've heard they last for forever, judging from everyones reviews on here. I only reccommend these knives, they are lifesavers and make cooking that much more enjoyable. I will never own any other knives other than Wusthof. Also, this set is a GREAT price for what you are getting! Absolutely amazing. 10 stars if I could.

UPDATE: I have had these knives for over a year (I know it isn't a super long time, but it's enough for an update) and they still look brand new. We use these knives daily and they work wonders. The only thing you need to do is get them sharpened every once in awhile, depending how often you use them.

Norpro KLEVE 7 Inch Cleaver

Norpro KLEVE 7 Inch CleaverI do not need a cleaver all that often, so I did not want to pay a lot of $$$$.

The Norpro is nicely balanced, plenty sharp, and has the feel of a quality product.

The handle is fitted very well. I am 100% satisfied with this cleaver.

If you are ordering a cleaver, know what you are after. This is for heavy duty

cutting through racks of ribs for example. If you want one for vegetables and fine

work like you see Asian chefs using, you want a much lighter and much sharper

vegetable type cleaver.

***quick chopping review***

The Norpro Kleve 7" cleaver is a very good quality cleaver that is sharp enough to chop ribs, chop steaks, chop chicken through bones, and chop chops(but not chopsticks, LOL).

its ergonomic handle makes the hand less fatigued and it's heavy enough to let the gravity do its work vs using too much of one's energy.

it's not ideal for chopping and slicing delicate and stringy vegetables such as scallions(spring onions)or trying to fine chop(and slice) or mince vegetables for it will not chop all the way through EASILY especially for those less trained in the art of chopping, slicing, and dicing

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
****DEEP SLICING REVIEW**** (more details)
1) Sharpness:
The Norpro cleaver is sharp enough to do heavy duty chopping. It does a fine job chopping through bones and ribs and chickens.
Sometimes, I like to make a pre-cut before I start chopping and the Norpro is not sharp enough to make an incision through the meat by itself without applying some force. But it does a good job chopping thick meats and veggies (such as taters).
The blade is not sharp enough to cut through vegetables such as spring onions or celeries without using more effort than an Asian Cleaver or a sharper cleaver or knife.
In other words, if one was to look for an all around sharp cleaver, this is not the one that is designed to cut through a steel can, then ribs, then parsley.(Joking about the steel can, of course, of course)
2) the handle:
The handle is VERY comfortable and ergonomic. That makes a difference if you have a big family or like to throw parties. The fatigue factor can set in when one is chopping for a lot of people, trust me.
3) The blade:
it is heavy enough to let one use more gravity than one's own force/energy to chop. Making it less work for one. However, it CAN get heavy (but the ergonomic handle DOES help).
The blunt edge is thicker; making it ideal to tenderize meat (if one doesn't want to switch between a tenderizer and a cleaver) when using the straight down motion. The radius at the corner doesn't make it ideal to tenderize meat if one is used to 90 degree corners. But that goes back to each user's preference.
The FLAT of the blade isn't "wide" enough to do some of those tricks COMFORTABLY that one sees on TV(such as when Yan Can Cook uses the flat of the blade to smash through garlic). It CAN do it, but not as good as the cleaver with wider blades.
My mom is Chinese and she loves her Chinese Cleaver, those are wider and she uses it to smash them garlic with ease.
I can smash garlic with the Norpro, but the garlic tends to fly out from under the blade thus making me having to look for it half the time.
The sharp edge of the blade has a slight curve toward the handle. Making it close to a "rock" and "chop"
This is different from other cleavers that are STRAIGHT at the sharp edge.
The difference here is the straight chopping down motion. Some chefs and folks like to chop straight down without using the slicing motion.
When the sharp edges are straight, they can cut all the way through with the straight down motion. With the Norpro, a straight down motion will NOT chop anything all the way through. One would have to "rock and chop" it.
this blade's sharpness as well as it's curved blade do not make it ideal for those that like to chop straight down or slice fine, delicate veggies as well as making more precise cuts on more delicate incisions that is sometimes required. It CAN be done, don't get me wrong, but more effort would have to be used than a sharper knife/cleaver.
But if one likes to "rock and chop" using a swinging motion, they will enjoy this blade.
4) Quality and misc.:
The quality of this blade really surprised me. For the price, it really is designed VERY well. It arrived in a handsome box (if one was to give this as a present, it doesn't come in those cheesy plastic bags with a plain cardboard box.
I recommend this cleaver for those that are just starting to want to use a cleaver but don't want to pay a high price.
If one is looking for one of those all-around cleavers, this may not be what they would be looking for.
So start shopping and start chopping! LOL
Got this product in March 2011, I thought that it was sturdy and well made. By June 2011 this items handle broke chopping a chicken bone. The handle which feels like it is one piece with the blade, turned out to be hard plastic incased in rubber which split in half. Could have been quite dangerous also. If you're looking for a reliable cleaver this is not it.
u see that metal part at the bottom of the handle? u think that's connected to the knife? WRONG !!!!!!!! cant believe they decided to cut back just for that small piece of metal. its plastic in the middle !!! u use the knife for making blows to a piece of meat w/ bones ! maybe its planned so it will break . i dont know. well mine is broken.
Want Norpro KLEVE 7 Inch Cleaver Discount?
Great performance for primary use, which was cutting poultry. Today, a huge weakness made itself very apparent after the "Handles are made of ABS plastic, the highest grade of plastic" decided to snap in the middle of a cutting session. No warranty of any kind I could find here or on the Norpro website. I would choose another cleaver for these two reasons, plastic handle and no warranty!
Al Mar AM-UC4 Ultra-Chef's Utility Knife, 4.75 in., Cocobolo Handle, Plain
Al Mar AM-UC4 Ultra-Chef's Utility Knife, 4.75 in., Cocobolo Handle, PlainI am very pleased with the performance of this knife. If you are new to high-end kitchen cutlery, you are in for a pleasant surprise. If you have yet to experience VG-10 steel and it's 60-62 Rockwell hardness I can only describe it as like cutting with ice. If you look closely at the edge of this knife, you see that it is mirror-like, not coarsely ground. I have five of these in different sizes, and while I'm also a fan of Global and Shun, I don't have five of either of them. To me, this knife is the perfect combination of Japanese blade tech with the looks of high-end German cutlery.
Silver 3 Candlestick
Silver 3 CandlestickI bought this Challah Board from The Judaica Store. Upon receiving the item, the salt receptacle was unattached from the board, while it was supposed to be glued to the board. This is not very good craftsmanship. The knife, too, broke after a mere few weeks of normal use. The blade partially unattached from the handle. I contacted The Judaica Store and they told me to return the item for a replacement. That incurs added expense on my part, because it would mean I would have to pay for shipping the item to the retailer, AND the shipping of the item back to me. I'm not a satisfied customer. Two stars for the quality of the board, as well as the quality of the retailer.
Oneida Aquarius 5-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1
Oneida Aquarius 5-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1I purchansed several sets of this flatware. I have found some large spoons weigh 55 grams and some weight 48 grams and have a very differnent shape and feel. I have also found some small forks and small spoons also have a different shape and feel. Many of the pieces had very visible grinding marks. The difference seems to be country of origin. The pieces made in USA all match and the pieces made in China all match. In some cases the USA made were better finish and shape and in one case the China made were heavier and had a smoother finish. It is a real dissappointment that my set doesn't match.
I received a 16 piece place setting of this beautiful flatware for a wedding gift over 9 years ago. My family uses this set on a daily basis and through wear and tear it is still looks great...nearly new. It washes up wonderfully in the dishwasher and I would recommend this set to anyone. I did not have any issues with pieces not matching each other as the other reviewer did but I do know my pieces were purchased all at one time. I do not know if this makes a difference or not.
I ordered this set because of the design and was not disappointed. Be aware, they are not restaurant quality or dinner party quality. They are relatively lightweight and suitable for casual, everyday use. Unfortunately, a spot of tarnish was noticed between the tines on a dinner fork before it even made it into the utensil draw!
Manage your expectations with this set of flatware (18/0 stainless is a lower to mid-range quality, anyway); and purchase a higher quality set for good company (18/10 stainless)!
For the price, these are great. Obviously these are not your swanky silverware that you bring out when dining with the president but they'll do just fine for the in laws. They have a weird texture to them and feel pretty light/cheap. Probably because they are. But like I said, if you just need a few extra sets and don't want to spend a lot, these are for you. Thanks
As soon as I saw the deal, I had to purchase 2. I had one for many years; always fairly sharp and got the job done for relatively small hands pretty quickly so I had to pick up another one. My husband also comments how easy to handle this paring knife is also. It isn't a knife that scares you because of how sharp it looks but doesn't perform, it is sharp and comfortable for many tasks in the kitchen.
F. Dick 12" Chef's Knife Professional Grade - Forged Steel
F. Dick 12' Chef's Knife Professional Grade - Forged SteelI have owned one of these knives (as well as many other F. Dick knives) for well over 35 years. I used it in my restaurant and continue to use it at home since my retirement.
F. Dick knives used to be available only to professionals; now they are available to all. I prefer it to other brands (Henckels, Sabatier, Wusthof, etc.) because of its balance and blade shape (slightly less rounded than the others) which works better for my cutting style. If I lost it, I would replace it with the same knife.
A word to the wise: As this knife has a laminated wood handle, wipe it down and dry it IMMEDIATELY after you are done using it. Never allow the handle to remain wet; it will de-laminate if you aren't careful. If you follow that simple rule and keep it sharp, you, too will have it for 35 years.
Gibson Anneville 9-Piece Hostess Set
Gibson Anneville 9-Piece Hostess SetI don't host many dinner parties and I generally use an OXO and All-Clad cooking set when making food. I wanted something that had a few different pieces for serving that wouldn't break the bank. I really didn't care about quality that much...it isn't like you use this type of flatware all that much to begin with, and you use it for serving rather than eating.
Having bought four flatware sets that all stunk, I finally took the plunge and paid the $250 for Liberty's 45 piece American-forged flatware set. It is absolutely amazing quality and I expect it to last centuries...that's something I'll use every day and given the flatware you use for eating, it's something you interact for many times longer than what you serve the food with...I wanted something of exceptional quality to eat with and I got it...BUT, at the same time, I didn't feel a need to spend another $100 on multiple serving pieces that I'll rarely use. This was further because between the Liberty set and a few All-Clad pieces, I spent a small fortune the past month.
So when I ordered these, I was not expecting anything well-made...I mean, at 75 cents per item (and that price is DELIVERED), expectations should not be that this is something that competes with high-end American-forged flatware...it doesn't, but for it's purpose it is a great product. Still my emphasis here is that one should have a realistic expectation of what they are buying beforehand. I was surprised because these really exceeded my expectations. I'd place their quality close-but-slightly-lower than most of the JA Henckel and Oneida flatware products that are made in China. These look good, get the job done, clean up pretty easily, are very easy to restore a shine with a mild abrasive such as Nevr'Dull wading cloth, and are priced so cheap if they get messed up it's no worry at all. It's great for family dinners when you may have young children beating up the flatware...you know anything used to serve is going to get beaten up, and most people do not even notice what they are serving with.
The two biggest downsides are the ones you would expect with entry-level flatware...bending and staining. These do a good job resisting bending, but if you put a hella good of bit of force on these, they will bend. They are not going to be ideal for prying/makeshift cutting. Also, they have a stain resistance that is far lower than something like (true) 18-10 stainless...again, this is expected. They still do have good staining resistance, but these are NOT serving utensils you want to leave in a dishwasher for an extended period after they are clean, expose them to acidic fruits or very salty foods and not rinsing them off immediately after serving is complete, or leave sitting somewhere in which drying will be slow/humidity is 100%. The easy solution to this is to clean them promptly after usage and dry them after cleaning...do that and they will keep the high polish finish for a long time. If they do stain/pit, any mind abrasive will quickly take care of it. Worst case, if one piece bends or heavily pits, you're out of a whopping 75 cents.
These get the job done and if you are looking for an inexpensive serving set that looks good and will last for many years, I think you will be most satisfied given the dirt cheap price and good-quality product. When taking both price and quality in mind, I give these 5 stars hands down.
Started my party serveware / tableware / flatware collection and this is great. I got a good deal through the warehouse deals. The box was trashed but I didn't care. The serving utensils were in perfect condition. They are thin but it's fine for the casual parties that we have.
I bought this hostess set because it has long handles, which is great for use at potluck lunches or similar. These look nice, but they are not heavy duty, in fact they are kinda thin but for what I need it for, that doesn't matter. I like that there are many different pieces such as a slotted spoon, pie server, cake server, ladle, serving fork, a butter knife, and a few others. I recommend this hostess set to anyone that needs a lot of serving pieces and doesn't want to spend a lot of money on it.
Sunbeam 73630.14 Durant 14-Piece Cutlery Block Set
Sunbeam 73630.14 Durant 14-Piece Cutlery Block SetI bought this item because of the soft grip. The wood block was ok, except it was missing one rubber foot and the other 3 were terribly misplaced, so I gave it away and just used my old kniferack. If these knives last two years, I got my money's worth. They are what they are: inexpensive yet functional kitchen knives. If anyone spends more than $30 for knives they're just pretentious, because these knives do what any $100 set will do, i.e. chop and mince veggies and slice some cooked meats. TIP: when you chop etc, never slide the sharp side of the blade across your cutting surface when you brush your food aside; instead, reverse the blade, using the dull side. That'll save your blade from premature dullness and I see a lot of people do that, brush with the sharp side... yeesh... nails on a chalkboard for me. LOL! Bon Appetit! Oh yes, the soft grip handles feel fine and ergonomic.
The picture (at the time of this writing) is not accurate. That's the 5-piece set. I got the 14-piece set and it was great! Particularly for the price! I actually bought it for the Christmas Exchange we had at work, but I opened it up and took at peek at it before I gave it away. The soft silicone handles are quite unique and seem like they would NEVER slip out of your hands, no matter how wet or soapy they might be!
I Should have known better then to think this would be a quality set. The knives are very flimsy and one broke while a guest was cutting cheese with it in his hand! The scissors barely cut anything. Save your money and buy a quality set that will last you years.
World Kitchen/Ekco 100SP Chicago Cutlery Parer And Boning KnifeI had one of these for years and missed it when it got lost at a pitch in. I didnt realize how much I missed it until I got this one on an "oh well...might as well order it". So glad to have it back.
we have had chicago cutlery knives for about 30 years. they are excellent, last and sharpen well. A little oil on the handles occasionally keeps them looking like new.
