I did some research before purchasing since I've never owned a cleaver before. For the price you can't beat this one. It is reasonable and the quality is exceptional. Full tang that makes you feel secure with every whack. This cuts through chicken bones, and spare rib bones easily. Cuts are clean without bone fragments. I already had a 6 inch boning knife and bought this for smaller tasks. Though it is a small 4 inch blade, the handle is sized like a 6 inch knife so it is easy to grasp when your hands are wet or slippery. It easily cuts up a chicken. These knifes are so sharp and really sleek looking. I love them. My husband and I had a Kitchen Aid knife set when we first got married, which we loved, until we stupidly ruined them by leaving them in a chemical bath to keep their shine. We finally got a new set and we won't be making that mistake agian. I don't think there are very many other brands of knifes that compare to Kitchen Aid quality without being super, super expensive. Bought this set of knives a couple months ago but just recently started using them. It is a very attractive knife set & looks great on our countertop but one of the knives has already started rusting after a couple of hours in the sink which leaves me to believe that they are obviously not completely stainless. However the description does say to dry immediately after washing & they were very inexpensive, so of course they aren't top of the line or anything. The Sheraton stainless that was made in the USA is simply exquisite and easily rivals any sterling set and I would highly highly recommend those. However, I recently purchased service for 4 from Oneida through Amazon. Big disappointment. Although Oneida failed to mention where the flatware was made on their website, when it arrived a 1" bar code sticker affixed to back of the box stated in very tiny print "Made In Indonesia" and after examining the set I found serious flaws.The beautiful detail of the Sheraton pattern was not evenly imprinted. There were areas on the knives, forks and spoons where the pattern actually became lighter and then invisible. I have never seen anything like this! In addition the Oneida mark was not done well at all. It was much too large and garish and actually interfered with the pattern even tho it was on the reverse side. The Oneida mark on the Made in USA set was very fine, subtle and tastefully done.
It is sad to see such a lack of quality control from a great company like Oneida. On the plus side, Oneida responded very sympathetically to my complaint and promised to send a postage free return label. So I give them 2 thumbs up for that. Also their customer service person Jennie was extremely courteous and accommodating. It is still possible to find Made in USA Sheraton that is new or like new in sets and/or pieces which I am happy to say I was able to do.I've had the same 5 5-piece place settings for the last 12 years. Anytime we eat out or at other people's houses I always notice the difference. I'm 36 but with arthritis. The pieces have a good weight and rounded barrel, so they're fairly easy to hold. They're not heavy; they're not weightless. They are easy to care for, simple and elegant looking. I love this pattern!
My only complaint is that they're cold in the morning, but that's just because they're metal. LOL!

How strange this turner gets much better reviews than it's big brother the 3x5 turner. They both have the same design, material, and construction; only a difference in size. Perhaps the larger one influences people to handle it harder, leading to durability issues and the smaller one, being used for more precise, delicate "dainty" chores gets a logically gentler treatment. Anyway...I like mine just fine, it's great for small dishes cooked in my small skillet single eggs, little breakfast sausage patties, brownie server, and more (that's double speak for "I ran out of things that I can think of saying I use it for").
Right now it's priced the same as the bigger one ($13.99) which is not a good deal at all I got mine for $8.99. Check back when it goes on sale. If you make Indian dishes like Dosas or Chapatis or really anything flat and floppy on traditional cast-iron pans, you need this thing right now! So much less frustration now that I can properly flip things!My aunt (who lives in India) had a similar turner for the past 25 years, still using it on a weekly basis with a broken handle because she was unable to find similar items in India! Wusthof makes the best knife blades in the business, and in my opinion the best quality knives. Cheaper knives generally dull more quickly, and some never get truly sharp at all. Wusthof knives, in contrast, get clean, exact cuts every time, and are a joy to use.These Culinar knives are a cut above even the Wusthof Classic design on which Wusthof made their reputation. When one picks up a Culinar knife, it feels like the handle molds itself to one's hand, as if the knife is an extension of oneself, rather than a mere implement.
A close look at the shape of the handle will show why. Wusthof Classic and Grand Prix knives along with the knives of most other manufacturers have a traditional handle shape, thicker in the middle with a straight back. That does provide a good strong grip if your hand is the right size and they are pretty good for me, since my hands are of average size.
The gently curved shape of the Culinar handles, though, while providing just as strong a grip, allows more control over the cutting action and the precise angle of the blade. The convex back of the hilt fills out the palm, providing more contact for a more secure hold. The taper in the handle makes it a perfect fit not just for average size hands, but for any size hand: a smaller hand will stay toward the bolster, where the handle is thinner, but a bigger hand will cover the handle further back, where it is thicker.
The bolster the thick part at the base of the blade has also been refined for the Culinar line. The transition from blade to bolster is gentler, and rather than being cut straight across the blade, the bolster is angled slightly to facilitate the forward hold used by some chefs. In this forward hold, the index finger is angled down on the right side of the blade the left side for left handers just past the bolster and the tip of the thumb is on the blade on the opposite side from the index finger. The forward hold facilitates a rapid rocking cut where the edge of the blade near the tip is held in contact with the cutting board, and the rest of the blade is rolled down on the food to be cut. A rapid rocking action with one hand while feeding the food through with the other can reduce the food to the desired slices, strips, or dice in record time.
The Culinar chef's knife is available in several lengths. The 20 cm (8") length is the one most commonly used, and the one I have; it works well for almost any cutting task in the kitchen. There are times when it feels like a larger size might work even better, such as when using a rocking cut on a large vegetable, but the 8" blade length always seems to be sufficient in the end. Note that the length is measured along the cutting edge of the blade; the back of the blade is slightly longer in Culinar knives due to the refinements in the bolster shape.
When first introduced in 1999, Wusthof Culinar knives cost about double the equivalent Classic knives. They were worth it if you could afford them, but many could not. Now, though, the prices on the Culinar knives have been reduced to only about one third more than that for the Classic knives. If you are in the market for a chef's knife, stretch a bit and buy a Culinar. You won't regret it.My husband splurged on this knife for my birthday this year and I love it! I have only used the knife sharpener and not any of the others, so extrapolate to those at your own risk. I used it about two years ago when there was one on site in the kitchen of the Inn where I was contracted to cater for an event. My experience was positive in the moment, but I would not get one personally. Here's why:This will put an edge on a knife. It will do so quickly, easily, and with very little skill or effort required.
HOWEVER it puts this edge on at the expense of the knife. It removes way more material from the surface of the knife than a normal sharpening on a stone. Furthermore, the edge it places is indeed sharp, but does not last. The angle is likely to steep to be maintained even with regular honing. Continuing to sharpen a knife over the course of a single weekend left me with a constantly sharp knife, but one where I'd removed a full 1/8 of an inch of material from the blade. Since it wasn't my knife I didn't much care, but there is no way I would ever let this touch my own personal knives, or any expensive knives really.
If you buy cheap knives in the first place and just replace them when they dull, you should seriously get this. It will save you a lot of money. BUT, if you care about the longevity of your blades, move along. Most likely your knife will only need to be honed anyway, but if it really needs to be sharpened, get a wet stone and learn to use it.
Edit: People are reacting negatively to this review in part because amazans mobile app posted my review when all I had listed was the positives, before the "HOWEVER". It took a long to to figure out how to edit the review from the mobile site and in the meantime damage was done.
That said, let me also clarify another point. Under normal sharpening conditions on a wet stone as you would find in a commercial kitchen it would take years to remove as much material from the blade as this thing did in a single weekend, and the edge would last a lot longer.Note that this review pertains only to the knife sharpener, not the garden tool or scissor sharpener. I am buying the multi-pack today, based on how well the version for knives has worked for me.
In 2006, Cooks Illustrated magazine did a product review of knife sharpeners, and the AccuSharp was deemed the best of the manual sharpeners that they tested. Then I found out that a friend of mine owned one, and I borrowed it. It worked like a charm, and I immediately bought one for myself, which I have been using for the last five years.
Sharpening is fast and easy. If your knives are not ridiculously dull, one or two passes is sufficient to restore the edge to better-than-new. The Cooks Illustrated review points out the only downside: If your knives are in really bad shape, this will not remove nicks from the blade it just doesn't remove enough metal.
Final thought: There is another review which states that repeated use over a weekend removed 1/8" of the knife blade. I don't see how this is possible, unless one is using it incorrectly (like sticking a new pencil in a pencil sharpener, and continuing to turn the crank until the pencil is sharpened down to a stub). Regular use is just a couple of passes, and removes almost no metal.

I have been using Accusharp for about ten years on everything from Kershaw, Cold Steel, Spyderco, Gerber, and SOG folding knives to Wusthoff, Sheffield, Forschner, Sabatier, and Henckels kitchen knives. None of my knives have been significantly reduced as described by Daniel in his review. I'm not arguing with his statements, just saying that my experience has been considerably different than his.If starting with an extremely dull blade, you might have to take quite a bit of metal off to achieve a sharp edge, but after that all you will need is a few light strokes to maintain the edge. And remember that you should use a butcher's steel or ceramic rod MUCH more often than a sharpener.
There are any number of similar sharpeners, and I've tried many of them but none work as well as the Accusharp.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have been using the AccuSharp multipack of sharpeners for many weeks now. The multipack consists of sharpeners for Garden tools, Scissors, and Knives and Tools. There is some overlap among functions; for example the Scissors sharpener can be used for hedge clippers per the instructions, and so can the Garden sharpener. Basically the differences between the sharpeners is how the sharpeners are mounted. The Knife sharpener has "v" shape array which fits over typical knife blades. The Scissors sharpener is a single flat, horizontal sharpener that you rest on the beveled scissors edge and draw it across. The Garden sharpener is "v" shaped like the Knife sharpener, but the notch is wider and one of the sides of the "v" is more prominent: that is the side that goes against the beveled edge of the blade.With these 3 sharpeners, I feel like there is nothing left in the house that I can't sharpen.
I have fine Wusthof kitchen knives, and a couple of swipes with the Knife sharpener and they are slicing tomatoes like they are new. Old scissors (and when I say "old," I mean from the 1960s) have been rejuvenated. The scissor action is a bit loose still, but the scissor blades are sharp as can be now. My lawnmower blade gets a few strokes each time I mow, and the grasscutting action is the better for it. Every time I come across something old and dull around the house, I have applied one of these sharpeners to it, and every time the performance has been improved.
These sharpeners are extremely effective, and thus it is VERY important to follow the instructions (just a paragraph or 2 on the back of the package) ... the most important of which is to use a LIGHT touch. It does not take much pressure to remove metal with tungsten carbide sharpeners, and you can do more harm than good if you press too hard. So remember, light touch improves much (I just made that up, good, eh?)
So, here are my pros and cons for this multipack of sharpeners:
Great value: Three sharpeners for a very reasonable price.
Excellent performance: As I described above, I have sharpened fine kitchen knives, VERY old scissors, newer scissors that had become dull, lawnmower blade, utility knives (not the razor type, the blade type), and every time the sharpeners have done an excellent job.
Color coded: Green for Garden, Yellow for Scissors, Blue for Knives. As well, the names/functions are printed or embossed on each of the sharpeners too.
Reversible sharpener: If you ever manage to wear down the sharpener, the tool can be disassembled and the sharpener can be reversed. This effectively doubles the life of the device. Awesome.
Protective handle: Because the usage is to rest the blade sharp side upward and draw the sharpener across, there is potential for slippage and injury WITHOUT a protective handle ... however the protection is there but care should still always be used when handling sharp objects.
USA made: Gotta love that one.
Lifetime warranty: I seriously love a company that stands behind its products.

I got one of these as a stocking stuffer 15 years ago from my uncle. To say I was thrilled would not exactly describe how I felt about it. But he was enthusiastic and so proud of this wonderful gift. My wife and I are enjoying the knife. It's really affordable and does it's job on bread..works great on a ton of other foods as well.This is a decent knife because it keeps a decent edge and doesn't feel flimsy. The price is very good. I would say it has one flaw, but it is a major flaw. When you slicing something like a loaf of bread it doesn't slice evenly. I use my right hand and cut from the right and I always end up with the bottom half of the slice thicker than the top. I've tried cutting at different angles but I still get the same results. Bought the 5" style last year for my mother-in-law and gave her this 7" style this year. She was ecstatic because the knife is so well balanced and comfortable to use. The red handle makes it easy to find in the knife rack and also on the counter top. These knives took a little getting used to at first. They just have a different "feel" than my high-end steel knives. At first I thought I might cut myself but you get used to them quickly. It's almost spooky how easily they glide through food. You can make tomato slices so thin you can almost see through them! They are almost all I use I'll wash and re-use my ceramic knives before going to the rack for a steel one. My only problem is my wife and squabble over who gets them when we are cooking together...I have one of these and I must admit that they are heaven to cut with. Really, you have never used a sharper knife I can assure you. The blade is VERY brittle. no matter how careful you are you will chip and nick the blade. I must admit that even though my blade is chipped like crazy, after a year of use, this knife is still sharper than anything thing I have used. (See my ONE YEAR UPDATE at the bottom of this review.)First let me make it clear I do not own THESE ceramic knives, but I own some that are similar. I am writing this to help people to understand ceramic knives better. After looking around, I bought the Tachi three knife set (with black blades), mostly because I wanted more than 2 knives. I am not disappointed. In fact, these knives have become my preferred knives for almost everything.
Ceramic Knives are an up and coming thing, but they have advantages and disadvantages. I also bought some Stafford Worldwide Ceramic Paring Knives and I compared all of these very closely to the Kyocera Ceramic Knives, and I find them to be fairly similar. The Tachi knives are sharper than the cheaper Stafford Worldwide knives, but the Stafford knives are still quite sharp.
Advantages of Ceramic Knives:
1. They retain their sharpness for many years, far longer than any steel knife.
2. They are quite inert and do not rust or react to food and chemicals.
3. The blade, at least, can withstand very high temperatures, up to 1,400 Degrees F., and it doesn't hurt the blade. Whether the handle can withstand these temperatures is another matter.
4. The blades are lighter weight than steel.
5. Because of their lack of reactivity, these knives clean up fast and easily.
Disadvantages:
1. Though the blades are sharp and retain their sharpness, I cannot say they are sharper than steel blades. Certainly razor blades are sharper, as are surgical scalpels. A good, sharp carbon steel blade would also be sharper, so don't get confused or expect too much. The advantage is not that they are super sharp, but that they are quite sharp and they RETAIN their sharpness. A carbon steel knife will stay sharp for about a day of hard use. Stainless steel knives will stay sharp for weeks to months. These knives will stay sharp for years.
2. The blades are not STRONG. They are made out of Zirconium, the same thing that is in Cubic Zirconium, and Cubic Zirconium is a very hard substance, second only to Diamonds. But they lack the crystalline structure of the Cubic Zirconium. On a molecular level they are instead an amorphous ceramic, almost like glass, and though they don't dull easily, they will break VERY easily if put under any kind of twisting motion, side to side motion, or similar bending stress, or if they are struck against a hard object such as stone or bone. They also might break if dropped on a tile or cement floor.
I strongly recommend you ONLY use it to cut on plastic or wooden surfaces. Vegetables and boneless meat are the premier uses for these knives. Buy yourself a nice counter top butcher block knife holder to keep these knives in, and always hand wash the knives and put them back into the block. Don't leave them in the sink where they might get broken by heavy kettles or plates being placed on them.
Having said all of the above, if you want a sharp knife that will stay sharp and last for many years with proper care, then this certainly is something with which you could be happy. These actually are now the sharpest knives in my drawer, including sharper than several (older) sets of Cutco knives. I rate it four stars ONLY because of the general lack of toughness that ALL ceramic knives have, NOT because of any inherent defect in this product.

ONE YEAR UPDATE. I have now (as of April 23, 2011) had my ceramic knives for over a year. They seem 'almost' as sharp as ever (probably 90 to 95% as sharp as they were at the beginning). However, despite excellent care, washing by hand, and NEVER using them to cut against bone or hard materials, my knives have developed some small nicks and 'divots' in the cutting edges. This is especially prominent in the largest knife. I have no idea how these nicks and divots occurred. I think they are just something that you need to expect with these knives. The 'defects' are quite small and seem to have minimal effect on the sharpness and cutting ability, but there is no question that they are there. Just be aware that this probably something you just need to expect with these knives. Sharp they are, but 'strong' they are not.

My assistant at the Inn, trained in culinary school in Paris, told me about these ceramic knives. I have a wonderful namebrand set of steel knives that she ribbed me about not being very sharp and that ceramic knives were better. I was curious, so ordered these to find out if they are as sharp and easy to use as she said. And now I can say first hand, that they are! I love cutting tomato slices that thin! I am very impressed. These knives are sharper out-of-the box than my German steel knives, and have a lighter feel. Don't hesitate to buy these as a gift! These Santoku knives have the fantastic Kullenschliff, also called the Granton, edge for extremely finely-honed thin slicing. They slice quickly into whatever width you want, from slivers to less thin pieces, with only a modicum of practice. The sharp flat cutting edge, safely lower than the handle, makes for an easy, comfortable grip. These knives have multiple uses--not just slicing for Asian-style food, nor, for that matter, just for thin slicing. One can chop, dice, or slice safely and quickly with these finely made instruments. I have a large collection of Wusthof knives, but this style is one of my favorites and most frequently used.I guess I write a lot of enthusiastic reviews, but I generally feel motivated by fine products and these knives are among them.I have a set of the Classic knives, but the one I use the most is the santoku chef's knife. I just prefer it to the "normal" chef's knives with the "French curve." So when this set popped up in my Gold Box, I jumped!
They feel sturdy but not heavy in the hand, and the hollows along the edge really do release the food more easily than the straight-edged ones. The paring knife is more cute than anything else. The santoku shape really doesn't add to its functionality, although it is a nice little paring knife.
Keep this set close at-hand, because you'll find yourself reaching for them all the time, as I do.

I've had this set for about 5 months now and it is WONDERFUL. Great combo of top quality knives. They are very well balanced. The Santoku can be used to cut anything from raw chicken to veggies and will cut as thin as you can bring yourself to try! The paring knife is a good compliment for smaller items.Overall, this is a GREAT all purpose starter set. I would recommend getting some sort of storage for it though. I am about to order the 10 piece classic set because I love these so much!.

I have a Henkel's 5 star 8" santoku knife that I really love and wanted to get something just like it for my parents for Christmas, since they have mostly cheap and dull knives. I always thought that Wusthof had comparable quality, and since the regular price of these knives were much more than I paid for my Henkel's, I figured these would be even better than what I have. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a knife. These Wusthofs are designed to be more lightweight. But my longer and much heavier 8" Henkel's santoku just feels more substantial, easier to use, and more versatile than these Wusthofs.Also, I noticed that brand new, right out of the box, the Henkel's 5 star is super sharp and will slice anything that barely touches its edge. It cut so effortlessly. And that impressed me. But these Wusthof knives were not nearly as sharp coming out of the box. They had a holder set on the blade for safety, but it seemed unnecessary since it would take some effort to cut your fingers on the blade.
Again, if you're looking for lightweight this is probably the knife for you. But having used both this and the Henkel's 5 star 8" version, my preference is the heavier, sharper, and longer Henkel's 5 star.
