Kuhn Rikon Classic Serrated Utility Knives, Set of 2, Blue and Periwinkle

Kuhn Rikon Classic Serrated Utility Knives, Set of 2, Blue and PeriwinkleI already own two of their small paring knives and these are just as nice. One comment, however, Amazon's description "Kuhn Rikon Classic Serrated Utility Knives, Set of 2" led me to believe that both knives would be serrated. Only the smaller, Periwinkle one is serrated. However, the other knife, which is a chef's knife is also very nice and useful, so I'm not really complaining, just explaining that the description might lead you to believe they are both serrated.

Knifes are very sharp. Good value for kichen and general household uses. I would definitely recommend these knifes to others.

Best knives I have ever had to use in my kitchen. We love them. We bought exactly what we would use on a regular basis and total spent was not much more than $100 and a terrific value for that.

...whatever the color name -the colors and sizes are easily distinquished. The larger knife, on the left, in light blue, has a 5.75" blade, with a very fine serrated blade. The smaller knife, on the right, in turquoise, has a 4.75" blade, and has a noticeable serrated blade. Keep them in the blade covers and they should stay sharp for a long time, as running serrated knives through a knife sharpener is not recommended. These are great knives.

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Chef Knife

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Chef KnifeI bought this knife because I love my other, more expensive Henckels, and needed something in about this size. I figured I'd try the low-priced model to see how it compared.

Out of the box the knife had a great edge, and worked exceptionally. After a couple weeks of heavy use, however, the edge was all but gone. A quick run through a Henckel sharpener, however, and the great edge had returned.

You'll need to sharpen this knife a lot more than the more expensive versions, but if you don't mind taking the 10 seconds every other week to do this, you should be very happy with this knife.

When I walked into my local Meijer's I was looking for an inexpensive knife to beat up on. Allow me to clarify... I sharpen my own knives of all varieties. Kitchen, utility, tactical... You name it, I sharpen them. I like to be able to put a razor sharp shaving capable edge on all of my knives. I was looking for a very cheap knife to use as an instructional tool for my wife. I wanted to teach her some basic sharpening skills, and she needed something to practice on. As a cutlery enthusiast, I enjoy doing research on varying knife steels, buying knives that use them, and then testing their qualities and performance. So, when I purchased this knife for under $10, I wasn't expecting much. I was looking for a straight edged bolster-less 8" plus chef's knife, but aside from that, I really did not expect to like the knife. However, after testing it straight out of its package, I was very impressed with how well it performed. This knife is an excellent slicer for fruits and vegetables. Instead of having my wife mess up the finish of this blade, I decided to add it to my collection.

Here are the reasons why I have rated this product 5 stars:

1. Even though its thin blade profile may give the impression of being cheap, it actually makes this knife an excellent slicer, outperforming heavy more expensive German knives, Henckels or otherwise.

2. Because of the thin blade, even though it is a full tang handle design, it is very light weight. For someone who may have wrist issues, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, etc, this knife will feel very good in hand. I have found no balance issues either. It is perfectly balanced at the hilt, which also adds to the in hand feel.

3. It is very inexpensive!!! Did I mention I purchased the knife under $10? This is the biggest selling point. I wouldn't expect a whole lot from a knife at this price point, but if you understand the limitations of the steel at this price point(i.e. needing to be re-sharpened more frequently)then you will be very happy with its performance. Also, as an aside, I have re-sharpened this knife once since I bought it, and it was very easy to put a hair shaving sharp edge on it after a few minutes on my water-stones. So, I suppose the final selling point would be...

4. Ease of re-sharpening. Even though it won't hold an edge as long as a knife with a premium steel such as vg-10(which would also cost 8~15 times as much), it was very easy to re-sharpen.

In summary, I think this was an excellent purchase for the money. It outperforms some of my much more expensive chef's knives when it comes to slicing. It won't hold an edge forever, but neither will any other kitchen knife. If you never want to have to re-sharpen your knives, but just want them to have a sort of blunt edge that stays the same for years...then get a butter-knife instead :)

Also, I just remembered, the handle isn't the most comfortable thing in the world in terms of its shape(I can't use the same "pinch" grip I use on my more ergonomically designed knives). It felt a little blocky in hand, and I had to modify my grip a little to make it work. But, again, for the price, I really don't find it to be a show stopper. Once I fixed my grip to accommodate the shape, it performed very comfortably and beautifully. Honestly, if you don't already have a different grip that you are accustomed to, then you may never even notice. And to be sure, I actually change my grip slightly when switching between knives with different handle shapes, so it really wasn't that big of a deal.

I paid about [$$$] for this knife and have used it for a month now. it's a very good knife for this price. the blade is thin at the sharp edge and is thicker that the top; so it is sharp and strong at the same time. it's not carbon steel, so it will need sharpened once in a while but it doesn't take much work since the blade is thin. I use this knife all the time and i like it.

I don't cook much, so I needed an inexpensive knife which would be sharp and reliable. I've had it for several months and have not had to sharpen it once, but I use it only a couple times a week. It's nice and sharp, relatively well-balanced and comfortable to use, and cleans easily.

If you aren't serious enough about cooking to want more than one knife to use in the kitchen, this is an excellent choice.

Tuscan Mornings Gorham Wine Tempered Glass Cutting Board by Highland Graphics

Tuscan Mornings Gorham Wine 15 x 11.5-inch Tempered Glass Cutting Board by Highland GraphicsOur cutting board lost a foot and so was uneven. Since my Italian husband has a "thing" about Tuscany as well as wine, the

board pictured seemed just right and it is! We hope to buy more for our family for gifts which is definitely an endorsement.

The board is attractive, the colors subtle, yet it is tough enough to stand lots of chopping. A good choice.

I needed something small for the counter to put wet silverware etc on. This looks good and does the trick.

We bought these to protect the counter top from hot items taken off the stove or out of the oven. There are small rubber feet on the bottom to prevent sliding and to put a air gap between the bottom of the board and the counter top. We do not use these as a cutting board...works good for what we use them for..

Chef'n Dual Grater 2 in 1 Stainless Steel Cheese Grater, Apricot

Chef'n Dual Grater 2 in 1 Stainless Steel Cheese Grater, ApricotThis grater is wonderful. It's flat so it doesn't take up drawer space. It is dual-sided for fine or coarse grating. It has rubber feet so it doesn't slip when you're trying to use it. I love it.

The grater is quite flat and fits better in the drawer and in the dishwasher than my previous grater. Grates well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't know how it will hold up with time and being dishwasher-washed 1x/week, but I am optimistic.

I do like to add grated cheese to macaroni and cheese dishes when their cheese flavor needs a little help. I would have preferred one with a hole for slicing the cheese, but I liked the size of this one. When it came in the mail I wasted no time in putting it to work and found it to be satisfactory in grating cheese. One side has larger holes than the other so you can control how finely you want to grate the cheese, which is nice. It is easy to clean and is pretty flat so it does not take up much room in the drawer. The orange handle makes it easy to spot when I need it, and glad I had chosen it as my cheese grater.

Victorinox Swiss Classic 5-Inch Chef's Knife, Try Me Item

Victorinox Swiss Classic 5-Inch Chef's Knife, Try Me ItemI bought this for my husband, as he is the gourmet chef in the family. However, I use it for everything in the kitchen. Right size, easy to handle, and sharp.

I absolutely love this little knife. Small enough to pare, big enough to do some of a chef knife's jobs, and very comfortable in my hand. It stays closest to my work area as the "grab-it" knife. Razor-sharp right out of the box.

Buy Victorinox Swiss Classic 5-Inch Chef's Knife, Try Me Item Now

I have several other knife brands in my drawer, Henckels and Wusthof among them, I have found the Victorinox knives to be superior in many ways holding an edge being the primary advantage. And if they ever fail you (hasn't happened to me yet), they're cheap enough to throw away and just buy a replacement. You'll go through many of these before you spend as much as you would for many other brands.

Although I grant that they don't look as good in the knife block with these black fibrox handles, I owe my culinary instructors at MPCC and Consumer Reports a big "thank you" for turning me onto Victorinox.

I bought this particular knife because my 8 YO daughter likes to help out in the kitchen, but my 8" and larger knives were too big for her, and the smaller knives can't do the job. This knife fits her perfectly and lets actually her help when she's "helping", but I also find that I use it a lot for medium sized jobs.

I highly recommend Victorinox in general, and this knife in particular if you need something between a paring knife and an 8" chef's knife.

Excellante Polyethylene Round Cutting Board

Excellante 1/2 by 14-Inch Polyethylene Round Cutting BoardI had, for whatever reason, this idea that I "needed" an 18 inch cutting board and I wanted round and not wood since I abuse everything I have horribly. I never found one so I then ordered this unit in the 1 1/2 inch thickness. Sitting here now looking at it, it is more than big enough and the round size will get down in the sink much better than a large square or rectangle, the main reason I wanted a round board (well, pizza cutting and serving too maybe).

I've split two other wooden boards, a bamboo and a hardwood. I can tell you now, any wood that is glued together can split if you don't care for it and sometimes even if you do. I will never again have to worry over that. The packaging states that this board is the correct hardness to not dull your knives as well. That statement remains to be tested but the size and heft are perfect for a solid cutting surface that won't slide around with a knife cut like some thin little wooden unit.

I like the round shape and it is the size I have been looking for.

Fiesta 996 5-Piece Flatware Sets, Service for 1

Fiesta Rose 996 5-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 1We have a full line of Fiesta dishware and thought having the matching flatware would be nice. After a year of standard use and dishwashing, about 1/3 of the flatware is unusable. The upside is that it is cheap and replaceable. But count me among those who would rather pay more for something that lasts. We are in the process of ditching the Fiesta flatware line and moving to something more robust.

PROS: Retro Stylish. Inexpensive compared to quality flatware.

CONS: Very poorly made, Expensive if you need to replace 1/3 of flatware ever year.

I wish I'd read these reviews BEFORE I bought my sister-in-law 12 sets of the Fiestaware Flatware for Christmas. She washes them in the dishwasher and in less than a month they have started rusting.

Dishes are great but SKIP the flatware!!

I saw the other review here, and I felt I should put in my two cents, as my experience as been so different.

Perhaps the lots of flatware vary radically, but I've had flatware in eight different colors for about six years now, and have had absolutely zero problems, except the plastic on one fork is starting to come loose. No splotches, no breaking, nothing.

I will note that I DO NOT have a dishwasher. Perhaps that makes the difference.

I got service for 8 as a wedding present. That was 5 years ago. There are rust spots all over the steel and the plastic has broken on almost every piece. It started the first year I had them. I finally got new flatware this X-mas and am so happy to be rid of the bulky broken Fiestaware.

This is the ONLY Fiestaware I've been unhappy with. My 18 mo. old son "helps" me with putting the dishes away and though something gets dropped everytime, nothing has broken.

Satin Finish Champagne Flutes & Cake Server Set

Satin Finish Champagne Flutes & Cake Server Setthis is the most beautiful set i have seen and i spent a lot of hours looking!! i was impressed with the customer service, as just a few days after i placed my order, someone called me to ask me about the custom engraving I wanted on the flutes and the cake knife. the set is for my daughters wedding. the satin finish is pretty, but its been in the box for about a month now, as the wedding is still a few months away, and the finish is a bit oxidized looking. i am not worried, i think that a soft cloth and some elbow grease will shine them up without a problem. the engraving is nice, though on the flute it is a little difficult to differentiate some of the letters due to the specific script used. it will probably be easier to read when there is something in the flute. as far as being a keepsake that my daughter and her husband will have for years to come, i think they will be pleased with these.

Zwilling Cronidur 4 Paring Knife

Zwilling Cronidur 4 Paring KnifeThe Cronidur steel used by Zwilling to make this line of knives is very hard and will hold its sharpness far longer than most. The knives will also stay beautiful as the steel is almost totally resistant to corrosion.

The knife itself is a gem -very sharp and stays sharp. The ergonomic shape used to connect the handle to the blade is remarkably comfortable even for long sessions. I prefer the 4" length but I've seen a 3" sold elsewhere. This knife is also simply a pleasure to use. Highly recommended.

I have several other knives from this product line and they are all beautifully packaged and feel wonderful in your hand. I cook and bake a lot and have arthritis and fibromyalgia so sometimes prep work is difficult for me. These knives are so well balanced and a pleasure to use -the expense is well worth it and this price is at least $40-100+ less than I've seen them anywhere else. You will have this knife for your lifetime and pass it on to the next generation as well.

Weston Cabbage Shredder

Weston Cabbage ShredderEach fall for the past 10 years I make about 75 to 90 pounds of of saurakraut. I worry that my simple old two-knife shredder will wear out so I purchased this item as a backup. Firstly, the "current" model Weston Shredder does not have the plastic or laminate base shown. It has a thin, non-laminated, non-plastic wood base that will warp with usage. The blades are unevenly spaced and non-adjustable. The blades are held in place with hand-hewed chips of wood wedged and glued into place. I think there is more chance of this slicer self destructing that there is of my old model wearing out.

I regularly make sauerkraut in a 10 liter (2.5 gallon) Harsch fermenting crock, and I thought this tool would really speed the process of shredding the cabbage. I was using either a knife or a mandoline. When I bought this cabbage shredder in spring of 2009, it was selling for over forty dollars, but I figured that was worth it, since it would make the job significantly faster and easier. I pictured myself shredding head after head of cabbage in half the time it was currently taking me.

It arrived, I tried it, and was immediately disappointed. The white laminate was already chipping at the edges, and frankly, it was awkward to use. Even more annoyingly, despite the warnings to be careful about the sharp blades, they aren't very sharp at all, at least on my particular shredder. I really had to push hard to get the cabbage to shred.

I thought maybe there was a learning curve, so I tried it for two more batches, and then stopped using it. It turned out that for the three or four heads of cabbage I use for each batch of kraut, it's still faster and easier for me to use my cheap mandoline. On top of that, the shreds of cabbage come out much better using a knife or my mandoline: this produces rather thick, uneven shreds.

I attempted to log on and write a review of this product, and wasn't able to because at the time this vendor had stopped selling this shredder. (I think that was the reason.) I tried selling mine for half price on Craigslist, but no one was interested.

I suppose that maybe, if I had to shred a dozen or so heads of cabbage, this might be a useful tool. I really wanted to like it, but it just doesn't work that well for me. Now that it's selling for less than thirty dollars, I'm even more disappointed that I spent as much as I did. I don't recommend this product for someone such as myself who makes smaller batches of kraut

While the item will work, I suggest spending the extra money and getting a higher quality unit, an electric knife does a better job than this item.

As others have said, the cutter you receive isn't the same as described. Knives are poor quality, the wood is thin, the 2 make for a hard to use tool.

I used it for the first time this month. It functioned quite well, turning 28 heads of cabbage into sauerkraut in a short time.

The sharp cutting blades present an obvious finger-slicing hazard, which the instructions address by cautioning the user to wear "Kevlar gloves." Where would you find such a thing? Would it actually help? I dealt with the problem by starting a new chunk of product atop the old whenever there got to be less than an inch or so between blades and fingers.

If you disassemble for cleaning, as recommended, be careful not to lose the tiny screws. And on reassembly, don't get any of the blades in backwards. It's easy to do.

Cons Second rate. The set arrived in very poor, almost non-existent packaging. Each piece, I kid you not, was scratched in some way. The surfaces are not polished (rather dull), and the set is reminiscent of cheap restaurant grade flatware.

Kershaw Knives Bread Knife, 8 in., Clam PackedI am a banquet cook at a large resort and frequently have to do tedious things like slice 2000 slider buns or cut 1000 tomato slices. Everyone who has borrowed this knife in the kitchen comes back to me and asks where I got it. It's simply fantastic. The knife is light, the grip is excellent, and the blade is thin, which are all things you want out of your bread knife. Definitely keeps you going long after the guy with his 4 pound club has gotten fatigued. Would recommend to home cooks and chefs alike.

This budget knife does a fairly good job at cutting bread, tomatos, roasts ect. The knife is light, features a sticky rubber handle and has a very thin blade. Shun DM0710 Classic 6-Inch Boning Knife

Shun DM0710 Classic 6-Inch Boning KnifeI recently added this knife to my rather extensive collection of over 100 knives. I like the way this knife is balanced and the way that it fits the hand -there are right and left handed models. A boning knife is not the first knife to buy. After you have your basic assortment of knives this knife is a nice addition. If you are planning to bone a leg of lamb or a pork shoulder etc. this knife has no equal. It can be used to disjoint a chicken or a turkey as well. Shun knives are always razor sharp so expect an effortless experience as you use this knife.

I have discovered a small quirk with this knife. As is true with many 6 inch boning knives the weight of the blade is not sufficient to tip the knife blade down when placed on a cutting board or counter top so it stays flat and parallel to the work surface. Since the handle is rounded and very smooth the knife may spin away from position as you lay it down. In other words if you were not paying attention the blade could end up where the handle was and you could cut yourself. This is not really a problem as I just lay it on a kitchen towel if I am going to pick it up and set it down many times. Aside from this little quirk I would highly recommend this knife for a cook that would like to do their own boning.

Shun, makes great knives. Yes very expensive too. I recently bought the DM0710 from another vendor ..... for less than what Amazon charges. Just imagine the finest Samurai swords, then you'd catch my drift.

Nevertheless, this Damascus Japanese knife is super sharp.

Being a careful cook, I accidently poked myself with its tip.......my bad.

My point? This knife is so incredibly sharp, be very careful.

I should have known better.

Yes, I don't limit brands. I have a few Henckels, Wusthof, Sabatier, Dexter Asian vegetable slicers. Nothing beats the Shun. My kitchen knife collection consists of maybe 10 different blades.

If I had the money, I'd purchase their Classic 10" Chefs knife #DM0707L, left handed knife for a mere pittance $195 dollars. LOL

I've read the Shun Damascus edge is prone to chipping. IMO, must be ham handed individuals who brutalize what ever style Shun knives. Regarding specific purpose is BONING, period.

However, Shun guarantees their knives for life and will resharpen your, any model (pronounced "shoon"), once a year forever. Just save your receipts to verify.

Yeah, do you see German mfrs offering same?????

I don't think so.

Just my opinion.

Great features of the entire line include these cool "D" shaped handles that fit your hand better. Each knife is made in a rightand left-handed version ( for lefties). The steel used for the blades is harder than what you would find in most other knives. The knives are EXTREMELY sharp.

If you're building your set and want to take care of the must-haves first. Move this down on your priority list. Get the chef's, paring and bread knives first. With that said, there is a place for this knife in your kitchen. As with all of my other Shun knives, this one is extremely sharp and it's relatively light.

This is an expensive, but lifetime investment. I encourage you to visit stores and feel the knives in your hand to make sure you are comfortable with them. For more info on Shun, check out Alton Brown's website. For ratings on various brands and types of knives, check out Cooks Illustrated's equipment ratings.

This is my first and I'm sure last boning knife. As with all Shun's, it is extremely sharp -a must for a good boning knife. I was surpised by the knife's weight. Although the blade is flexible, the knife feels heavy for it's size. This gives me (a true novice at deboning and filleting) more confidence.

The famous D-shaped handle makes the knife easier to grip than other boning knives, but it can slip when greasy.

Beautiful and insanely sharp. I am very happy with the purchase. I do wish Shun would package the knives more securely though. This isnt the first Shun I've received that had cut through its own carton and into the shipping box during transit.

Master Magnetics Magnetic Tool Bar - 24in.W, Model# 07261

Master Magnetics Magnetic Tool Bar - 24in.W, Model# 07261I looked at similar products at the big box stores. Those held just a tiny fraction of the weight the Master Magnetics bars can handle. And the big box versions cost more. The Master Magnetics bars support a wide variety of tools inclduing very heavy hammers and wrenches. Note they are so powerful they can grab the screws and screwdriver you are using to install them.

Over the years I've bought several brands of magnetic tool bars. Some have been disappointing and some have worked well. These bars are the strongest bars I've ever seen and hold very heavy tools easily. Have just ordered another four.

Not a wimpy magnet. Holds even heavy tools with ease on pegboard, and if it were much stronger, I'd be tugging the pegs out when removing the tools. Does what it is designed to do well.

I made a magnetic knife rack using this magnetic tool bar. Sandwiched this with wood around it, a black velvet cover over this and it looks like a very nice finished product that is mounted on the wall. At a fraction of cost compared to a retail product. Knives are held on nicely, even a heavy cleaver, no downward slips so the magnets are strong enough. I bet it is just as effective in holding actual tools besides knives.

The bar is powerful and easy to install. It works as advertised.

Be advised that it may slightly magnetize some tools, but that can be an advantage when working with nuts/bolts/wrenches/pliers and screw-drivers.

Norpro KLEVE 6 Inch Boning Fillet Knife

Norpro KLEVE 6 Inch Boning Fillet KnifeI already owned several Kleve knives and liked them for their price to quality ratio. We are talking $12 knives (cheaper for smaller ones). They are not fancy, but they are made of good durable steel and they hold their edge.

Anyway, I wanted a GOOD fillet knife, you know, with flexible blade. This knife only cost me around $7 (used via Amazon) so I'm not complaining, it's well made and will be useful, but honestly, this is a BONING knife, not a FILLET knife! (why is it "filet mignon", but "fiLLet knife"? LOL)

I wanted a matching set of knives in my block without dropping a fortune, so it's ok, but I really wouldn't pay more than say $15 for the large chef (and less for smaller ones).

IKEA actually has some really nice knife offerings. They have 3 different collections (representing varying grades of quality), but they are all good knives (also made from Molybdenum-Vanadium steel like Kleve a "german" recipe steel) and very well priced for what they are. There's even a Damascus steel chef knife (shun style). I'll be getting a fillet knife from there. (Look for Slitbar and Gynnsam brands).

Great boning knife especially for the price. The weight is right, the look is great. It came in soft plastic case, not one to reuse regularly really. All and all great value.

Master Cut 2 Triple Tempered Surgical Stainless Steel Knife Set

Master Cut 2 Triple Tempered Surgical Stainless Steel Knife SetThey might claim that they are ever-sharp, but I would consider that the only positive attribute of these knives. You do get a fair number of knives, but nothing special.

On to the negatives. Handles are horrible. Cheap plastic with not even clean edges. They make the knives horribly balanced and feel like the blade could easily break out of the handle.

They say stainless, but are not. As a matter of fact the "stainless" inscription is the first thing that stains almost immediately after first use.

Lastly, the edges appear to be make more for sawing and not cutting. I have yet to find a food that these knives cut well. The steak knives tend to rib steaks apart rather than cut them. Carving a beef roast is impossible, you end up with pulled beef rather than a slice of meat. Chopping is a no go as well and the teeth are too large to allow for good cutting. They really do feel like you are wielding a saw and not a knife.

You can make them work, but if you have a choice, find something else. I would say almost any other knife set has to be better.

I have had a set of master cut now for over 4 years, I needed a bread knife and bought the set for $20 0r $30 and have had them ever since, they are my go-to knives when it comes to situations where I don't want to put my expensive knives in peril. They are not particularly sharp, but at least they stay that way. Great for tough meat, drywall, um... cutting roots still in the ground.... um yeah, they stay as they are, dishwasher safe, nearly indestructible, handy and worth at least $25 not more than $40.
